“Wisdom rests in the heart of a man of understanding, but it makes itself known even in the midst of fools.”
Proverbs 14:33
“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.”
Proverbs 14:34
The church that I am sharing today is very unique, and one of a kind…
…it is literally built on a rock! The Sally (Sallie) A. Memorial Chapel was built in 1937 in Mentone, Alabama…
…Col. Milford W. Howard built this church in memory of his first wife, Sally. You can see the large boulder the chapel was constructed around!
The chapel is always open for visitors and is still used for worship and weddings. It is easy to see why it is sometimes referred to as “the church with a rock in it”!
Named after Spanish explorer, Hernando de Soto, DeSoto Falls is near Mentone. The upper Falls is easily accessible…
…and the lower or main falls (which is a little harder to photograph) is a 107-foot waterfall and is one of the tallest in Alabama!
The falls have carved out their own canyon!
Elsie and Virginia are loving beach time at Oak Island, NC!
I couldn’t resist taking a photo of these old boat houses at DeSoto State Park…
…notice this red one’s reflection in the water, so beautiful!
Butch’s all time favorite appetizer is “fritto misto” which is an Italian phrase roughly translated as “mixed fry”. This dish included snapper, oysters, peppers, and shrimp fried perfectly!
With a cloudy sky overhead, this was a view from the brow of Mentone. On a clear day the view is amazing!
“I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord!”
Psalm 122:1

That chapel is so very cool. The waterfalls of AL remind me of WV. One of my daughter’s’ in-laws live in Oak Island and love it (she does too!). See you tomorrow.
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Thanks Rita, we do have a lot of waterfalls in AL!

I haven’t been to Mentone, or really much of the northern part of our state except for Huntsville…so beautiful! Thank you for sharing God’s beauty from your neck of the woods. It’s amazing how the church was built around the rock – and many parallels to faith represented there! I hope your sabbath has been blessed. 🙂

Have a beautiful week, Kim!
Liz @ Home and Gardening With Liz says
What a special church- love that the church was built around the stone. I enjoy the pictures you share of your state. One of these days I need to tour some of the southern states. We drove down to Disney World with the kids a long time ago and that was the closest I’ve come to visiting any southern states!

What beautiful pictures and even more lovely places displaying God’s amazingly beautiful world. Thank you for sharing Mentone with us. I have never heard of it and think it would be a wonderful place for a little trip from Louisiana.

Wow! What an interesting church. It reminds me of that line from an old hymn: “On Christ the solid rock I stand . . .” Thanks for sharing the beautiful photos of a beautiful place.
