“By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.”
Hebrews 11:3
It was the first day of October and we were more than excited about our opportunity to visit Yellowstone. After a super day in Grand Teton National Park, our plan was to spend today traveling the south loop which would include Old Faithful. We were blessed with a beautiful autumn day with temps in the mid-sixties. Yellowstone, with all the geothermal activity, geysers, hot springs, alpine rivers, dramatic canyons, and abundant wildlife is one of the most unique places in the world. We understand there are approximately 1,000 geysers on the planet and half of those are found within the caldera boundary in Yellowstone. We should all be thankful for those who came before us, recognized what a treasure they had found, and had the vision and desire to preserve it! Yellowstone became the world’s first National Park in 1872.
The south entrance is only about 58 miles from Jackson and a bonus is that there is not one inch of bad scenery between the two places! Awesome drive just to get here!
Old Faithful was giving us a tease. It was almost time for the predicted eruption window (+/- 10 minutes) when a ranger came by and said they were off on the time by about an hour. We joked that even Old Faithful was getting too old to be faithful. There is plenty to see while waiting. No boredom here!
And holding true to it’s name, the most visited spot in the park and the most famous geyser in the world did not let us down!
If only we could be as consistent as Old Faithful!
Iron Spring Creek is a tributary of the Firehole River.
Black Sand Basin contains a variety of geothermal features within a small geographical area. Although crowds were not a problem on this October day, we still found this spot less crowded than other places and it offered so much to see.
The Emerald pool was a breathtaking site because of all the colors. The color variations are a result of the water temperature and the cooling that occurs as you near the edges of the pool. The bacteria and organisms that survive and thrive at different temps bring tremendous color to many areas in Yellowstone.
A broader view across Black Sand Basin. A Bald Eagle was soaring overhead when this pic was made so it could not have been a more perfect setting!
It is clear why this is referred to as “bobby socks”. These lodgepole pines have soaked up the minerals around their bases and when the moisture evaporates they are left with their white socks . Remembering all the scientific details of what is going on in Yellowstone is impossible, but this area at the Fountain Paint Pots was intriguing and that is an understatement!
The emerald colors here were captivating.
Another bacteria has found an environment that must be perfect for survival.
The Fountain Paint Pots look like a fun place to play and make mud pies but like everywhere in the park, you do not want to step off the designated walkway!
Spasm Geyser was having one of its spasms along with a few others across this vast landscape near the Fountain Paint Pots!
Bison are plentiful in the park. We are more apt to call them Buffalo but our guide for the day and other locals would always say Bison.
The lower falls on the Yellowstone River as it makes its way through the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. The falls is over 300 feet high!
It is impossible to capture the depth and beauty of the gorge with a camera.
Thanks for joining us for a day in the park. We will never cease to be amazed and truly overwhelmed at God’s creation.

Great memories! We hit Yellowstone and paid homage to Old Faithful back in 2010 on a cross country road trip! Such a great place!

Yellowstone is truly amazing, thanks Michele!

What incredible shots Pam and Butch; we are hoping to get there this next year and since it is only 6 hours away it should be doable. Here in Colorado we call Buffalo Bison as well and I was told it referred to animals that were raised not wild-but that doesn’t make sense. Thanks for sharing!

So so pretty Pam….no matter what time of year you visit all the geysers and the park….and your photos are special. When we see animals…it makes it even better. Great job my dear friend. And BTW has anyone ever told Butch that there is a slight resemblance to John Denver? Now I am singing Rocky Mountain High…LOL
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Kari, it is funny you mention that Butch favors John Denver, he has been told that for years. He also sings just like John and plays guitar. We have been really big fans for years. We went to Aspen last year on the 20th anniversary of his death.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Breathtaking scenery & so interesting Pam! You capture it beautifully. I was enraptured.
We don’t have geothermal geysers here in Australia, we do have geothermal pools though in quite a few places. 😀
Blessings,
Jennifer
