Pam-perings: The August Edition

August 20, 2015~ Pamperings

“Keep my commandments and live; keep my teaching as the apple of your eye; bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart”
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭7:2-3‬ ‭

There are so many interesting things you can learn in the blogging world.  I have discovered delicious recipes to try, creative DIY tutorials to attempt, unique places to travel, and interesting books to stick my nose in! And these are things I might not have known about otherwise!  I wanted to join in on the fun, and share with you all some of my favorites!  I am starting a new series today called Pam-perings! I will be sharing with you some of my favorite spaces, places, products, etc!  And please, join in and comment…I want to know what you’re into!
Is there a place in your home that is YOURS?  By that I mean: do you have a favorite chair or a special place that is your “go-to”?  Our kitchen has two very comfortable chairs that Butch and I call a refuge and respite from all the noise of life.  You will find me here every morning before the sun rises with a cup of Italian roast coffee, my ESV study Bible, and a devotional book. Early morning is my favorite time of day…the house is quiet and the stillness is a perfect time to commune with the Lord, which is the most important thing I do!  “My spot” is also where I do my blog work!  So this chair is revisited many, many times during the day!Yum, yum, yum!  I discovered this excellent granola a few weeks ago.  I purchased two bags at my local TJ Maxx Store and have gone back to replenish!  So far, I have tried a Taste of Seattle, a Taste of California, a Taste of Maine, and a Taste of Maui, with Maui being my fav!  It makes a great snack and I sprinkle a little on Greek yogurt and my morning muesli! Of course, homemade granola is the best, but this is a great alternative.  Shhh…let’s keep this one a secret, I don’t want there to be a shortage of Naked Granola! A few years ago, I suddenly developed bad allergies after being allergy free all my life.  I always enjoyed perfumes and colognes, but now most of the ones that I had worn give me terrible headaches and nausea.  The one brand that works for me is Jo Malone.  The scent is subtle and does not enter a room before you do! The fragrances are divided into 7 groups: floral, citrus, fruity, spicy, light floral, woody, and cologne intense.  You can tailor your scent by fragrance combining to create your personal signature!  I am currently combining Blackberry and Bay (fruity) with Wood Sage and Sea Salt (woody) for my signature fragrance! She Reads Truth is an online group of women committed to reading God’s Word together daily! They just launched a new study plan on the book of Daniel and I am enjoying the deep study that they offer! You can sign up for emails here or get the free app for iPhone or Android.  They just launched a new website, He Reads Truth, and Butch and I plan on doing the Daniel reading plan together and discussing the truths we learn!  These are great online tools available for growth in our everyday living!      What a delight these “little books” have been!  I received them as a gift from Katy and I just love each one!  Let me explain what they are, in case you don’t know. They are called Chat Books, and you can download the app and then connect to your Instagram.  Each book holds 60 photos, along with the captions, dates, and even hashtags! As you’ve posted enough photos to your Instagram to fill a book, it ships directly to you!  It’s the little gift that keeps on giving! You get to pick the cover for each one of your books!  Such a great gift idea!

Tablescape Tuesday: Back Up And Punt!

August 18, 2015~ Food & Entertaining, Tablescape Tuesday

“The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭16:9‬

The best laid plans are subject to change.  I am sure we are all too familiar with things changing at the drop of a hat and having to just roll with it.  I had been planning all week for dinner on the patio…the tablescape was planned out in my mind and I had even purchased flowers for the centerpiece!  About the time I was heading out the door to get started, much needed rain started falling, for which I am grateful.  So, I had to “back up and punt” (you football fans will understand that lingo)!  And voila!  A completely different tablescape!  Although it was hard to photograph because of the gloomy day, it all still came together rather nicely, as most back-up plans do!  I was able to use the flowers I had purchased and I will put the planned tablescape away for a not-so-rainy day!

The patio scene as the clouds rolled in and it started raining!

So with the already purchased gerber daisies, I began looking through my linens, dishes, etc. to come up with plan B.

When you are in doubt…

pull the blue and white out!

Last October when Butch and I had a little get-away to Highlands, NC, I found these vintage placemats at an antique shop and I had yet to use them. The “back up and punt” plan seemed to be a good call!

The matching napkins were included in the set of 24 pieces for 24 dollars!  Yes, 12 placemats and 12 napkins for a dollar each!  I quickly pressed the napkins and found this iridescent ribbon in my stash of stuff to add some glam!

I used my Spode “blue room collection” dinner plates with an English blue and white jar for the daisies!

The iced tea stemware remains a favorite along with the vintage Fostoria water glasses!

Italian porcelain figurines and candles complete the centerpiece!

The silvered votives add a little sparkle to the table!

Happy colors…happy flowers!!

“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver”
Proverbs‬ ‭25‬:‭11‬

Walk A Mile In My Shoes

August 17, 2015~ Faith

I am about to share with you all something I don’t think I have shared before.  You ready?  Ok, here goes.  I love shoes.  And I have for as long as I can remember!! As a little girl, excitement would overtake me when I got a new pair of shoes for the beginning of a school year!   They were my pride and joy-I took extra care so as not to scuff, because they had to last unless my feet had a growing spurt!  And then Easter would roll around and it would be time for more new shoes!  I would get a pair of patent leather shoes only to be worn to church or special occasions!  Those two annual shopping trips stand out so vividly in my mind…I couldn’t wait to be seen in my new shoes! Because she believed you needed good shoes for those childhood years, my mother always took us downtown to our nicest shoe store.  Does anyone remember Buster Brown?IMG_1143

Now let’s fast forward a few years…as a young bride with my first job, my love for shoes only grew to somewhat of an obsession. I always wanted the highest heels because it made this short girl walk a little taller!

As years passed, I was teased about my shoes and would be asked how many pair I owned.  When I taught ladies’ Sunday School, they often teased me and said that shoes would replace flowers at my funeral…and that they would divide them amongst themselves.  They knew me too well!

I can no longer wear high heels for any length of time, my feet hurt too bad. But I still enjoy a pretty pair of shoes and I do think they can be an art form!  I must say I am more sensible these days and purchase shoes more out of necessity.  I do still have moments of weakness and indulge.

On a girls’ trip to NYC in early December 2005, we wandered into Bergdorf Goodman.  They were having a 50-75% off SALE, so please imagine my surprise when I saw these at 75% off!  Of course, they made their way into my suitcase rather quickly! I also purchased these in 2005 and I still wear (and love) them because they have a kitten heel.  The art printed leather caught my eye! Look closely and you will see musicians playing instruments.  I still get asked about them!  And notice my tan lines…proof that I wear flip-flops outside during the summer months!
In January I was visiting my friend in Raleigh and found these very comfortable booties at 75% off!  With her influence and in my moment of weakness, my friend talked me into buying.  These will get a lot of wear! My first time in Paris was the spring of 2003.  While spending an afternoon on the Champs Élysées, I found a shoe store, (I know that is hard to believe!!) and a friend talked me into purchasing these cute slides.  So I can blame a lot of my purchases on my friends!

Sure, shoes are fun and make a statement. On a given day, every person you see (for the most part) is wearing shoes.  Work boots, pumps, flats, sneakers, flip-flops….they’re everywhere.  But today, let’s go beyond what meets the eye, and get to what matters most. Shoes are more than just a pretty accessory…they can tell a story.  When we look at peoples’ shoes, what if we took the time to find out where the feet inside have been?

“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ”
Galatians 6:2

As we pass people in our everyday living, we pass by stories of all kinds. We are commanded in scripture to bear one another’s burdens, but we can’t do that if we don’t find out where others are.  So, let’s do that.  And maybe we will understand a little more what the term “walking with God” means. Maybe you are a man who works hard to provide for his family…

…or a young married couple who loves God and each other, and is mapping out plans for what the rest of your life should look like… You could be a young lady who spends grueling hours on your toes, dancing gracefully through life…  …or young children, waiting at the bus stop, feeling the many emotions a new school year brings.   You could be in a season of life that you need a break from the mundane, and you need a place to clear your mind…to rest underneath the shadow of God’s wings while enjoying his creation.Or you might be two years old and life is popsicles and choo-choo trains!
…and sometimes life throws curveballs.  You might be healing from an injury-either physical or emotional.       Or maybe you just don’t like shoes! You could be in transition, and all of life is a challenge right now…
Maybe you’ve worked hard all day, and fuzzy socks are calling your name…
…or maybe you’re a grandmother who is always ready to do any and everything her family could possibly need. You could live on the other side of the world in Togo, West Africa where most of your days are spent standing on dirt floors…a place where flip-flops are a luxury.

God gave Butch, Seth, and me the opportunity to go to Togo 4 years ago.  We visited some of the poorest of the poor…but their hearts were rich.  They danced, they sang, and they loved.  What a privilege it was to get to know them.  Their faces are forever in my mind and in my heart. But how did that good news that characterized their life get all the way to a little village in Togo, West Africa?  Because someone went.  Someone told them about Jesus

“How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?  And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”
Romans 10:14-15

God desires that people from every tribe, tongue, and nation come to know him and worship him at his throne.  And he wants to use our feet to bring about that most glorious day.  It may not be a village in Africa that you go to.  He may use you in your office.  You could be salt and light in the grocery store. Or you could be a mom who stays at home with her children.  Whatever you find yourself doing day in and day out, he wants our everyday living to bring about his glory and accomplish his plans. While shoes are fun, and I admittedly have a shoe obsession, when we stop to think about the purpose for which our feet were created, we see a much bigger picture.  We see the climax of all of history unfolding, as we worship at his throne.  May God use my feet and yours for this long-awaited day…

“After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”
Revelation 7:9-10

Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of th Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of the year! I am sharing this merry table that was inspired by @april.cornell Victorian Christmas tablecloth! As an April Cornell brand ambassador I received the beautiful tablecloth and lovely Essential blue napkins. The red and white checkered top lends itself to classic casual elegance. The lovely snowy village on the border of the cloth came to life with a couple of snowy wood slice chargers that are topped with tiny little village shops that my beloved Mother gave me many years ago. They hold a special place in my heart. The salad plates depict Christmas Village scenes and complement the cloth. An easy centerpiece of fresh fruit is nestled atop fresh greens and placed in a Natale bowl by @arteitalicacrownlinen I have joined 17 table stylists for a Christmas Tablescape Blog Hop. Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morn Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morning Blooms. The theme for the July edition is Summer Living! Living in the country, our summer days are filled with outdoor chores, one of which is gardening! My ‘Little Lamb’ panicled hydrangeas are in full bloom and are the star of my simple table setting! The basket holding the hydrangeas is very sentimental. It belonged to my beloved Mother who kept her journals and devotional books in the basket. I often picked up the books and journals to read while visiting my sweet Daddy. Since my Daddy passed away in March, my brother and I are cleaning out our parents home. I just knew the basket was coming home with me! My precious Mother would have loved seeing it filled with flowers! A vintage tablecloth, @april.cornell ‘Eden’ napkins, Portmeirion ‘Botanic Garden’ dinner plates and stemware from Tuesday Morning (many years ago) complete the table!

Happy July! 2025 is half over, and where did it go Happy July! 2025 is half over, and where did it go? I am celebrating the red, white, and blue with a table set in the garden with a couple of treats and sweet iced tea for this hot summer day. Precious memories are attached to the checked tablecloth. My beloved Mother prepared Sunday lunch every week until she passed away. Each Sunday was a feast comparable to Thanksgiving. During the summer months, she often used this checked cloth. More delicious meals than I could count have been served on this cloth!

Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer table is in my garden. I decided the table should be simple to allow the hydrangeas to be the star! I always love sharing a ‘special something’ on a table setting that is sentimental and has wonderful memories attached like the majolica pitcher that belonged to my beloved Mother. A beautiful blue and white tablecloth by @april.cornell for @victoriamagazine was a surprise from my sweet husband and also included the ‘blue roses’ tea set which was a part of the limited edition when it was first introduced a few years ago. The Sur La Table floral-patterned earthenware was inspired by London’s Chelsea Flower Show in collaboration with artist, April Cornell. Vintage hobnail milk glass stemware was purchased at the Longest Yard Sale. Sometimes I just enjoy a simple table!

The table is enhanced by views toward the mountain, woodlands, and the large Snowball Viburnum. The verdant rye grass appears as a green carpet that has been spread for Easter! Vintage Fitz and Floyd ‘Herb Garden’ teapots, sugar and creamer, and oval tray are suited for springtime with their embossed bows, vegetables, and words. A bouquet of Kwanzan Cherry blossoms add more spring color to the setting.

Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our woodlands and this is the first one of the season, an Easter/Spring table! I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bodily resurrection enables all those who choose to follow Him to have assured victory over our greatest enemy…death!

I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

A fluffle of moss bunnies hopped up to the picnic table. A ‘Charming’ tablecloth with Mary Lake-Thompson napkins and Williams Sonoma enchanting ‘Famille Rose’ bunny plates!

I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition of Tea on Tuesdays. My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. As an April Cornell Brand Ambassador, I was gifted these gorgeous linens! I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.

I am serving my favorite, Earl Gray tea, from an Eileen’s Reserve teapot. Teacups by Grace Teaware and vintage Rose Chintz salad plates by Johnson Brothers add more floral patterns to the mix. Japanese Magnolia blooms were cut from my garden and placed in a lilypad teapot!
