…and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”
Psalm 46:10
Sometimes life just gets loud. There are deadlines to meet, to-do lists that never end, and chores that must be done before we can lay our head on our pillow at night. The demands of our everyday living seem to never end. And they leave us longing for something more…
…for a time of quiet, of peace…and of rest. Do you ever long to escape the noise of this life…to turn down the volume or even silence it completely?
Have you ever been so busy doing that you miss out on just being?
I have desperately needed a time of quiet, a time to escape. Over the past few days, I have set aside time to seek to have a quiet heart…to listen to His still small voice in the midst of a crazy and loud world…
….to just be still, and know…that He is God and that He is in control.
“Being in a hurry. Getting to the next thing without fully entering the thing in front of me. I cannot think of a single advantage I’ve ever gained from being in a hurry. But a thousand broken and missed things, tens of thousands, lie in the wake of all the rushing…through all that haste I thought I was making up time. It turns out I was throwing it away.”
Ann Voskamp
“Restlessness and impatience change nothing except our peace and joy. Peace does not dwell in outward things, but in the heart prepared to wait trustfully and quietly on Him who has all things safely in His hands.”
Elisabeth Elliott
“All these toys were never intended to possess my heart. My true good is in another world, and my only real treasure is Christ.”
C. S. Lewis
“I hunger for filling in a world that is starved”
Ann Voskamp
“God is God. Because He is God, He is worthy of my trust and obedience. I will find rest nowhere but in His holy will that is unspeakably beyond my largest notions of what He is up to.”
Elisabeth Elliott
“Fight for us, O God, that we not drift numb and blind and foolish into vain and empty excitements. Life is too short, too precious, too painful to waste on worldly bubbles that burst. Heaven is too great, hell is too horrible, eternity is too long that we should putter around on the porch of eternity”
John Piper
“I don’t really want more time; I just want enough time. Time to breathe deep and time to see real and time to laugh long, time to give You glory and rest deep and sing joy and just enough time in a day not to feel hounded, pressed, driven, or wild to get it all done-yesterday.”
Ann Voskamp
“Lord, give me a quiet heart that does not ask to understand, but confident steps forward in the darkness guided by Thy hand”
Elisabeth Elliot
“Blessed are the single-hearted, for they shall enjoy much peace… If you refuse to be hurried and pressed, if you stay your soul on God, nothing can keep you from that clearness of spirit which is life and peace. In that stillness you know what His will is.”
Amy Carmichael
“If you look at the world, you’ll be distressed. If you look within, you’ll be depressed. But if you look at Christ, you’ll be at rest.”
Corrie Ten Boom
What about you, friends? Do you long for a place of quiet, of rest…a place to go for refuge and safety?

Oh Pam, this is such a enriching post and one that is perfect for me.
My spirit has been restless as I miss my daughter who lives in California.
Indeed rushing through life does not accomplish a thing and focusing on the Lord and all of His goodness is where true peace is found.
Lovely to have you with us today at TOHOT.

Beautiful and profound post. I woke up early and was awed by the full moon in all God’s glory. It is wonderful to get up early and have that quiet time with the Lord and meditate on what he is saying to me.
The quotes and scripture with your lovely pics are inspiring today. Love the lavender and orange flavors together. I could go for one of those orange rolls about now. Love, love the rainbow pic. Your garden is truly lovely and everything is growing fast. You’ll be pruning soon.

God sent to me In the middle of the night Psalms 46:10. He kept saying “Be still and know that I am God” and it woke me up. I was going through a difficult medical issue and it calmed me down and caused me to remember that HE is in control. He removed an obstacle and sent the help I needed. We have an awesome God that’s always available to His children. Thank you for this post today. My soul needed it and others will benefit from it.
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Alice, thanks so much for sharing with me this morning! I praise the Lord for removing that obstacle. My heart has been so burdened and I wrote this post out of that burden! My prayer is that the Lord would use my feeble attempt to encourage others and that He might be glorified! Blessings my friend!

Stillness needs to be practiced. Most find silence uncomfortable. Interesting, isn’t it? I’m taking a class on CS Lewis right now, so I loved his quote (and all the others.)

How interesting a class would be on C. S. Lewis!

Hi Pam, Beautiful post! I was reminded of a quote I heard years ago – “we’re called human beings, not human doings!” I’m also thinking of the Bible verse “thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee.” I live in Charlotte, NC and our population now exceeds 1 million with unbelievable housing and road construction going on everywhere! I’d love to head to the mountains to get out of this traffic, hustle and bustle. Have you ever been on a silent retreat? I went to one in 2 different years in the 1990’s – it was wonderful! Blessings, Janet
Pam @ Everyday Living says
