“By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established”
Proverbs 24:3
Have you ever made plans that are so fun and exciting that nothing can mess them up? You’ll do whatever you have to, come rain or shine, to be able to carry out those plans? On our recent trip to New England, this was exactly the case! After spending three days on beautiful Martha’s Vineyard, we planned to spend a day on the lovely island of Nantucket…and I was so excited! But one thing wasn’t looking too bright for our day on that little island…the forecast was showing rain! But there was nothing we could do about the weather, and I sure wasn’t going to let it put a damper on our day!
We had an early ferry reservation from Hyannis and departed on time for the hour trip…and boy was it an interesting trip! Within ten minutes, we were in extremely rough seas for about forty minutes! Let’s just say it was not smooth sailing! I was so glad to get off the boat onto land, but just as the forecast said, it was pouring rain. We decided to make the best of it and we had a wonderful day! There are no pretty blue skies with white puffy clouds in our photos, instead there is a different kind of beauty…ethereal looking mist and fog.
You’ll need your umbrella and rain boots today as we take a walk around the beautiful island of Nantucket! But don’t worry…later on we will dry off when we jump into a van with our own personal guide!
The tiny island of Nantucket is 14 miles long by 3.5 miles wide and is only accessible by sea or air.
Main Street on the first day of October…just a little damp!
The Pacific National Bank was built in 1804.
Beautiful architecture and cobblestone streets!

Look at these gorgeous hand-carved doors!
Brant Point Lighthouse was established in 1746 to aid the whaling industry mariners.
The current lighthouse was built in 1901 and continues to operate as an active aid to navigation.
The Old Mill was built in 1746 and is the oldest functioning mill in the US. It is operated as a museum.

The Lighthouse was built in 1850 and was moved from its eroding bluff to the fifth hole of the golf course in 2007.

Whew! We’ve made it through all of the rain…you can put your umbrellas away! I hope you all stayed dry! Now, let’s get into the van with our own personal tour guide…I will be hopping out of the van from time to time to take photos of the cedar shake homes on Nantucket!

Joy, the ferry ride almost got to me. We have been on really rough seas for 24 hours in the Gulf of Alaska a few years ago, but this ride terrified me. Fortunately the return trip was smooth!

Well, you made it much farther in the rain than I did in the sun this summer (I was on foot for a few hours!). I loved all your photos — some places I recognize from my visit and some delightful new ones. It’s a great spot! I did a series of posts on Martha’s and Nantucket earlier this summer on the Gypsy and I just loved it. I’m going to check back and see if you have any Martha posts so I can relive my adventures through your eyes. Coming via TOTOH.
Pam @ Everyday Living says
How fun that we have both posted on the same places! I will definitely be visiting your posts and thanks for your visits this morning! You made my day! Blessings~

But it is still one of my favorite places on earth and you captured it so perfectly with your beautiful photos. One great thing about rainy days there is the quiet! Thank you for the tour. Linda

Oh, thank you for sharing your trip. My husband and I spent our honeymoon on Nantucket 20 years ago. The surprise for me in your post was the picture of the carousel horse. I took that same photo when visiting the other side of the island. I brings back happy memories. I am thankful to the Lord for those happy memories and for bloggers like you who serve to remind me of my blessings.

How wonderful that you spent your honeymoon on Nantucket. We loved it even in the rain. Amazing that the carousel horse was there 20 years ago. Wishing you a wonderful week!
