We are reminded daily that nothing will last forever. Time will take its toll on the very best of design, material, and craftsmanship. Natural disasters, accidents and sometimes intentional actions bring about heart wrenching, sudden changes that interrupt and forever alter the normal. We are all witness to that this week as unthinkable news rolled in from Paris.
Certain places have special meaning to all of us. Preserving precious memories is very important. Losing something dear to us can bring great distress and sadness. Whether a structure known to people worldwide or an old family home place valued by a few, being unable to sustain and save is troubling.
Places of worship have possibly been the most revered and sacred spots throughout history. Whether churches, tabernacles, synagogues, temples, or tents of meeting, those who gather are typically attached, protective and sentimental at the very least.
One of our favorite springtime church images !
Such was the case for those who worshipped in the Temple in Jerusalem in Jesus’ time. Rebuilding of the Temple had begun a number of years before His birth and by the time of His public ministry it was well established and very important to those who came there on a regular basis. When Jesus predicted the destruction of the Temple and also stated He could build it back in 3 days it infuriated many religious leaders. It had taken years to build this magnificent structure. It was a very special place to so many. How dare Him make such a statement. Of course many people, as well as the religious leaders failed to understand he was referring to His own body and predicting His death and resurrection three days later.
It was on the Friday morning that we call “Good Friday” that in a mock trial, Jesus earlier statement about the Temple would be misunderstood and also twisted and used as false testimony against Him. An innocent Jesus was crucified later that day, but just as He had promised, on the third day He rose from the dead ! And less than 40 years after His resurrection, the Temple as well as Jerusalem suffered complete destruction in A.D. 70. Jesus cannot be destroyed and He never changes. This fact is why we share Hebrews 13:8 at the end of all Simple + Southern Sunday posts. The Friday that changed the world is definitely a Friday to remember.
Many believe this to be Golgotha !
“And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. And it was the third hour when they crucified him. And the inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.” And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left.”
Mark 15:22-27
I am not a historian but I find it interesting that possibly the 2 oldest churches in the world were established to mark the place of Jesus birth and the place of His death and resurrection. Whether these spots are the exact locations is debatable but no doubt both are very near the actual birthplace in Bethlehem and Golgotha, “the place of the skull” in Jerusalem.
“And he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him.”
Mark 16:6

Pam, this is a day of reflection and gratitude, and your post sets the stage for that. Although it does not have your usual beauty in tablescapes, flowering trees, and beautiful and sweet children, it has a different kind of beauty; the beauty of the greatest sacrifice ever known.

A hard yet beautiful story. Today is also difficult because it’s the first time I’ve come to my father’s birthday since he passed away last summer. I knew if I came to your blog page, I’d find focus, comfort and peaceful photos to think about. Thanks for the Easter message and the bit of beautiful distraction. Happy Easter weekend to you!

What a beautiful segue into the last of Holy Week. Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, both somber, leading to the joy of resurrection on Sunday. The photos are just perfect and so, too, are your words in these days of reflection.

Beautiful Sentiments Pam….thank you for your scripture and truth.
He died for our sins and suffered horrible pain and affliction, while we are so undeserving of such love.
I also love that while hanging on the cross, Jesus asked John to take care of his mother, which later John did, moving her to Ephesus. Love for His mother abounding.
And then at the tomb….on the third day….the proclamation!
Matthew 28:6 He is not here, He is risen, just like He said.
Now, we wait for the sound of the trumpet when those of us who are left will rise up to meet Him in the air! Oh, what a glorious day that will be. Jesus is coming again.
God Bless you Pam and your wonderful husband Butch, Bless your whole family. To God be the Glory. Amen.
