“If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.”
Romans 12:18
Hello dear friends. It seems that we are in the grip of August heat, pop-up showers followed by steam baths! By this time, I am looking forward to autumn. Typically, we love to travel during fall, it isn’t as crowded and the temperatures are pleasant. Since we have no travel plans in 2020, we are revisiting a favorite autumn road trip and you are invited to come along. Let’s return to the Vineyard…that would be Martha’s!
“Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.”
-Gustave Flaubert
This post is only a highlight of three separate posts that featured Martha’s Vineyard. I suggest for your reading pleasure that you visit all three in order not to miss anything. Click on the highlighted links to view the original post.
When traveling, I always do my homework before I book a place to stay. Charlotte Inn in Edgartown did not disappoint.
An interesting note: A Hallmark movie, A Godwink Christmas that aired in 2018 is the story of the Charlotte Inn owners, Gery and Paula Conover. It is a sweet story about how they met over thirty years ago with the Inn also playing a starring role.
The Charlotte Inn’s Main House was built in 1866. The Inn has the look and feel of one of Europe’s great country homes.
Every public room is a visual reminder of the past, an atmosphere dominated by antiques and art.
To the right of the entry is a perfect library. I love books and love to read, I could have spent an entire day in this English style space with the comfortable chairs and outstanding works of art.
Every nook was filled with antique collections such as this antique flashlight collection.
We spent a day walking through Edgartown that was founded in 1642…
…one of New England’s most elegant communities!
To really appreciate the architecture of the homes, you must walk its streets!
Many stately white Greek Revival houses that were built by whaling captains have been carefully maintained.
The Charlotte Inn of Martha’s Vineyard is truly a treasure and a feast for all the senses. The gardens were exquisite…
…with wonderful tucked away places for reading or just relaxing!
The Terrace is by far one of the most beautiful and romantic dining rooms I have ever seen!
It is an enclosed terrace filled with light. Tables are set with crisp white linens, delicate Limoges china, and silver vases of fresh flowers. Classical music plays in the background as the sound of a fountain adds more ambiance to this perfect scene.
We met the beautiful innkeeper, Paula as we were seated for breakfast on our first morning at the Inn. As she poured a perfectly dark roasted cup of coffee, she chatted as if we were old friends. After finishing our fabulous breakfast (including house-made cinnamon doughnuts), she pulled out a chair and helped us plan our day on the Vineyard. All four meals that we ate in The Terrace were culinary perfection!
Oaks Bluff is famous for its more than 300 Carpenter Gothic cottages…
..with Victorian-style gingerbread.
Every color combination can be seen on these cute summer cottages!
Gay Head Light is a historic lighthouse on the western most point of Martha’s Vineyard.
Thank you for your sweet visits and gracious comments. Wishing each of you a joy filled day!

Oh, what an amazing place! I could spend hours just gazing at those sweet cottages! It seems like a place a person would never want to leave.
