Winter’s dormancy and cold days can make it difficult to roam the outdoors and capture pics. Numerous colorful scenes tend to be around every corner in the other seasons. However, winter has its own true beauty and you can always count on the changing weather to provide something of interest. After all, no two days are ever exactly alike!
“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33
Early morning fog rolls in as a new day begins. The river is about 200 yards beyond the trees and recent clearing we’ve accomplished has opened up the view to the adjoining pasture. It is above freezing here but that was not the case on another foggy day!
Freezing fog creates a beautiful landscape with the ice crystals being very different from snow, sleet, or freezing rain!
Called rime ice, a lot of places in north and central Alabama had this look, and a few areas had it two mornings in a row. Maybe you have experienced this unique weather event? We saw some amazing photos posted last week.
With a lot of river bottoms across Alabama fog is common, making this phenomenon not as rare as we might think. But last weeks event was rare because it was so widespread, involving several states across the south. Rime ice is different from hoar frost but I couldn’t help but think about the word hoary when I saw the next pic Pam made. The word hoary is an old english word defined as “showing signs of old age”. As in hair turning white or grey…like…
…these folks. I guess rime ice can make you look older too if you stay outside on a freezing foggy morning!
Very pretty indeed but my preference for a magnolia displaying white is when it has those sweet smelling summertime blooms!
O’ to be at a place in life where discovering a new pile of rocks where your house is under construction is the grandest thing in the world! Do you remember when rolling in a pile of leaves or climbing on a dirt pile, sand pile, or rock pile was the equivalent to climbing and conquering Mt. Everest?
I complained about camellias some time back and said the one bush we have never does one thing! Well I need to tame my critical spirit toward this plant because it has bloomed for months now and continues to put on new buds…
…and it blooms…
…and blooms! I must repent. Frosty mornings have taken some toll on this one. We plan to add a different variety of camellia so I suppose I am softening up in my attitude toward our state flower!
Sunshine and shadows become natural artists to create a beautiful overlay on everything inside the cottage. The angle of the light makes this possible for a few days this time of the year. The coral bark twigs appear to have just been brought in from the icy outdoors, but not so…it was as cozy as can be in the Sunshine Cottage.
Our throwback this week highlights one of the most picturesque and most photographed places in the world…Santorini, Greece, 2013!
OK, I know you either love this or not so much! But in our divided household, when it comes to college sports, it makes life much easier to give in and give credit where credit is due. And since Pam is all about the Crimson Tide, this will help me continue to experience wonderful dinners at home. And I had to admit, they were the best by far! Never thought I would say such.
The sun did the work of burning away the fog and melting the morning ice… so goes another day.
Y’all have a great week!

Beautiful pictures of the frost. I prefer frost to snow as it doesn’t linger.

Have a lovely Sunday, dear Alice!

What stunning photos! There is beauty in every season. We had the freezing fog too, which is a term I had never heard before. Now I’ve learned “rime ice”! I could actually feel little icy prickles when I took the dogs out early in the morning. How exciting for new house construction. I imagine Queen EM will have some strong decorating opinions for her room!
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Thank you Roxanne, and rime ice is actually beautiful. Yes, the “Queen” is already explaining her room to me!
Bonnie Morgan says
Santorini is so beautiful! It is on my bucket list for sure.
I learn so much from you, Butch. Rime ice and hoar frost are examples.
There is much beauty in winter and you have given us lovely pictures today.
Yes, I can see how the pile of rocks entertained the girls well.
So proud of our team in the Championship game! Roll Tide Roll!
Enjoy the new week.

Thank you Bonnie. Butch has been teaching me for almost 48 years. He is a fabulous observer of God’s creation! Happy Sunday!

I love the hoary frost on that sculpture. The “gray-haired” cherubs look like they’ve aged, as we all have in these recent winter days.Fog and frost are a wonderful companion for a photographer and these are lovely.
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Thank you Jeanie. The hoary frost gave me a food opportunity to take some photos on these cold and gray days.

Good morning Pam and Butch! The pictures with the rime ice effect are gorgeous! We never knew the term Butch so thank you for teaching us something new today. The coral bark picture has such a lovely visual effect. The coral tree bark picture with rime ice is stunning. That rock pile was conquered by the girls! That looks like lots of fun for them. We know the girls are anxious to decorate their room. Enjoy your week sweet friends! Clara ❤️

Your photos of the results of freezing fog just goes to show how beautiful nature can be in every season. The first time my husband and I experienced it was in Germany and it was stunning just like your photography.

Good Morning Butch and Pam! The frosty pictures were quite picturesque. Rime ice is a new one for me. I feel like I learn something new every Sunday when I come to visit. Thank you to the both of you.
And the girls are getting a new house. Oh how fun for them to experience that. Will EM have a pink room?
Now Pam… I do congratulate you on your Alabama win. But I don’t think you know this but I am a major Ohio State Buckeye Fan. I love football and I love my Buckeyes. But Alabama played exceptionally well! Fantastic team this year! I’ll be watching your Heisman Trophy winner as a possible draft pick for my Fantasy Football Team.
Happy Sunday to you both and enjoy your week!
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Thank you Nancy. I did not know you were a Buckeye fan. My SIL graduated from OSU and my brother is a big Crimson Tide Fan, they managed to make it through the game without any problems 😂 I have always been a big Alabama fan and I never miss seeing a game. College football is my favorite. Wishing you a good week my friend!
Nancy says
I love College Football too even more so then NFL ballgames. I bet we are their best cheerleaders!

Beautiful images. My camellia has buds; however, no blooms yet. Have a great day!
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Thank you Shirley. Maybe you will see blooms!
Sandra at Maison De Jardin says
Dear Pam, such lovely photos. I do love fog and we see what you refer to as rime ice often. I have always called it a Hoar frost. Whatever the name, it is pretty. I am happy your Camellia bloomed. In Virginia I had a row of Karl Knudsen’s under my tall Loblolly pines. You may want to goggle them. As you love color, they are a brilliant red and are gorgeous.
Wishing you a happy and lovely day, sweet friend.
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Thank you Sandra. Thanks for the the camellia info. Wishing you a wonderful week my friend!

Fog is such a great subject for photography. I never tire of what it offers. As always, the photos are lovely and so are your camellias.
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Thank you Linda.
Mildred says
Thank you for the lovely post. I too am like Butch. I have a Camilla bush that has never done one thing in 20 years. Was ready to rip it out, so this year it has buds. I’m giving it a chance.
Roll Tide!
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Thank you Mildred, maybe those buds will become beautiful blooms!

Love the way the rime frost “edges” the leaves and gives them a whole new dimension. Bless
you for the Santorini photo to warm this frigid day. John 16:33 is just what is needed to calm our concerns and affirm our trust. Nothing like a rocky “bottom” to prove the Queen/Princess challenge in conquering the mountain was won. Just look at those jubilant faces Brava!
Stay safe, warm and cherish one another.
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Thank you Mary. The girls love a rock pile!

Beautiful pictures of the rime ice. Never heard of that before. I would like to know how you heat Sunshine Cottage? I would like heat in my She Shed.
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Hi Nancy and thank you. We have a mini split system (heat and AC) by Mitsubishi. So far it has done an amazing job heating and cooling.

I’ve never heard of rime ice before! We do get frost here especially out west that looks very similar. I wonder if its the same but called different names in the different countries.
A new home & a new brother! The girls will be excited!
Lovely images Pam & Butch!
Bless you both,
Jennifer
