“Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the heart.”
Proverbs 21:2
Let’s start with a beautiful garden that is a toss back to 2015. The Palace of Holyrood House and the Abbey in Edinburgh, Scotland is surrounded by wonderful gardens and grounds. This is Scotland’s official home of the British Monarchy, but tours are available.
When the privet, pepper vine, and honeysuckle all come together it provides a very colorful scene. The pepper vine (or peppervine) leaves offer a variety of colors depending on their age. It does bloom and berries will be plentiful in late summer. Some people call it “cow itch” but it is not the plant we typically identify that way and does not cause skin irritation. The trumpet creeper that blooms later in the season is what I have always known as “cow itch”.
Privet is very invasive and I personally wish it would go away. However, give credit where credit is due…it has a pretty bloom with a sweet fragrance!
Not that I believe in such things, but one day last week I told PJ the sky was full of ghosts!
I discovered an abundance of mulberry near the lake not far from home. I would think these trees will attract a lot of birds and maybe small mammals. And deer absolutely love mulberry leaves and twigs, especially the new growth.
Ella Mae just can’t get enough of baby brother Wyatt. She loves to hold him! With two older sisters though, I sure hope he is a tough little guy!
A miracle…both smiling and looking at me at the same time! EM was excited about her upcoming birthday. She turned 5 last week! She and EK wanted to sit beside the garden frog.
Pam’s mom planted these lilies many years ago. Although her garden area doesn’t get the attention it once did, her lilies continue to stir sweet memories of days gone by!
I was surprised to find what appears to be red clover at the pasture’s edge. I don’t recall seeing it in previous seasons. Crimson, hop, and white clover are plentiful. In fact, white clover has dominated parts of our yard this year. I fear that if it weren’t for white clover, we would have a lot of bare ground!
Often overlooked, the tulip tree or tulip poplar has a very neat bloom that shows up in late April/early May. The tree is also called yellow poplar but is actually in the magnolia family. It is our tallest eastern hardwood!
The gold mound spirea has flourished recently and coming to full bloom. We have had an abundance of spring rain! These particular plants have been in our landscape 20 years!
A really nice small lake on the farm of one of Pam’s dear friends. I have always wanted a pond or lake but at this point such is not in our plans!
Magnolia time in the south!
A sunset behind famous “Shinbone Ridge”. And yes, that is the real name of the little ridge that runs along the southeast side of the very southern end of Lookout Mountain!
We pray you have a blessed week!

Ahh, sweet magnolia……a few weeks still away here in our region, but I can remember that fragrance so well, And privet too. It’s funny, we walk by our Montessori school frequently and they had a landscape company pull all their privet that lined the schoolyard chain link fence….only to see it growing back again this year, lol!
I love seeing the girls (and Wyatt now too!). Their little bruises on their legs from play are too cute. Even though it seems like forever ago, I can still remember those on my skinny legs as a kid. Have a wonderful week, Butch & Pam.
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Good morning Rita, Seth pulled down all the privet that was along our fence line that joined a pasture next to us. I am sure it will come back. We have more to come down. Our girls are rough and tumble, running and playing, and falling. Their little legs always have bruises. Enjoy your week!

Thank you once again for your pictures and captions. I live in Florida but grew up in Kentucky. I miss seeing and smelling so many of the trees and plants you show. I do see lots of Magnolia.😀

Good morning Pam and Butch- I didn’t know the tulip poplar was really a magnolia. I think they’re so pretty. Those sweet girls are adorable! EM’s pic with her cute daisy dress and pearls holding Wyatt is a sweet moment in time. Your Mom’s red lily is beautiful! Pam, your quote about magnolias is spot on. Privet had really overtaken the landscape it seems all over the south. It is everywhere and is so resilient. I like it as a fence row hedge but it doesn’t stay there thanks to the birds. Enjoy your day sweet friends. Clara❤️
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Thank you Clara for your sweet comments. Privet will not stay put, it is prolific everywhere. I think it has overtaken kudzu! Enjoy your day my friend ♥️

The Holyrood and Abbey were a missed experience, so I thank you for setting me there for a brief moment….enchanting. And the enchanting duo of EM and EK joining Master Frog in the garden – another treat. Just look at EM’s radiant face while “mothering” Wyatt…melting love in those beautiful eyes and enough to embrace us all. The photos of foliage and blooms (especially your Mom’s dazzling crimson lily) balanced out the folio, leaving one sitting beside that lovely lake to contemplate
Butch’s celestial imaginings….. I see angels and a heart up there…. What a lovely environment you
both have provided to celebrate the Sabbath….

Mary, thank you for your thoughtful comments, always enjoyable to read. The girls love their baby brother, and we are all totally smitten! Wishing you a lovely week my friend!

Why do I have a flash forward image of big sister EM interrogating any potential dates little brother Wyatt brings home?!? The air here is sweet with privet and honeysuckle, but goodness it is invasive. Butch, we bought our property mainly because of our 3 acre pond! It has given us so much joy and entertainment with the wildlife it attracts. We have a steady stream of fisherman too since we stocked it with bass, crappie, and catfish. Growing up on the beach in Charleston, being around water is where I find the most peace.
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Roxanne, your flash forward image could possibly be true! We love the smell of honeysuckle. I know you love your 3 acre pond and the joy it brings. Have a lovely week my friend!

Such a sweet picture of Ella Mae and her new baby brother, Wyatt. The pictures of EM and EK are cute too with the garden frog. It does not seem like five years since EM was born. Where has the time gone?
Great post as usual every Sunday.
I emailed a link to you of a great video on growing peonies from P. Allen Smith. It also has a link to another video that was very informative. He had great tips on growing and arranging.
Have a great week.
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Bonnie, where does time go! It gets faster as I get older. I watched the video and it is excellent!

I can almost smell the magnolia Butch. Oh to there to get a full deep breath of it. The clover is an invasive plant and can take over the yard if not careful. I don’t recognize the vine that you call cow itch vine. I love their bloom. My neighbor has a beautiful one that is on the end of her garage. The tulip popular tree grew in our woods. As a child during Summer at night we could smell it. Of course we didn’t have air condition so slept with the windows open and also could hear the whippoorwill singing. Baby brother Wyatt seems to be EM’s doll baby. He will grow up to appreciate having those two girls Love him so much. The picture of the farm is one of the neatest ponds I’ve ever seen.
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Thank you dearest Alice. I love hearing the whippoorwills singing. The girls love their baby brother. My friend has a beautiful farm and I love visiting with her. Have a beautiful week!
