“Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.”
Isaiah 40:28
I like the view from up here because it doesn’t reveal that I need to pull weeds, mow, and weed eat!
I enjoy observing the seasonal progress and changes in the wild things that grow around the house. Trumpet creeper has been in bloom for quite some time now and this is a good representation of weeks of change from blooms to seed pods together at the end of a vine. Seeds can be retrieved from the pods when they turn brown in the fall. It is interesting to note that a new trumpet creeper vine that springs up from seed can take about 10 years to start blooming!
This looks like tall flatsedge, a sedge found in the southeast US. We are seeing it in a few places where we haven’t noticed it before, likely because of wetter weather this summer. As long as it stays well away from the lawn it is interesting to look at. Unfortunately a variety of sedge, or nutgrass has popped up in the yard and it is hard to control or eliminate. One variety that I’ve always called chufa is planted in fields, mostly south of us, as a crop that is a favorite of wild turkey. It is a crop that is found widely across the world with edible “nuts” found underground like peanuts! A crop in one place may be a weed in another!
Horsenettle I do believe. When I see the word nettle associated with a name I automatically think of prickly and/or stinging. And this is no exception. Have on leather gloves when attempting to pull this up and refrain from taking a nap amongst it. It’s probably Carolina horsenettle which is not a true nettle but it will prick you just the same!
I think this is Ironweed? It has a very tiny bloom.
There is no guessing as to what this is. Pam and I both indulged in a summer berry semifreddo. A treat on a hot, late July afternoon at our favorite, Bottega in Birmingham!
Crepe myrtle is taking center stage these days, so I’ll kinda feature it here. Last week this was almost touching the ground, but has now arrived!
The white ones are so heavy with gorgeous blooms but are also a haven for Japanese beetles, which are in abundance. We wanted to spray to control the beetles but chose not to because of…
…these!
We do not see a lot of honeybees these days!
This is probably my favorite, but all add a lot of mid and late summer color to the southern landscape. Hard to pick a favorite!
What a difference a year makes. Last summer the girls loved just sitting in their daddy’s old jeep (and EK didn’t have much hair). This year they ride up to the house in their little John Deere gator but still ask if they can get this old jeep out and play in it!
PJ allowed me a peek at Monday Morning Blooms, coming tomorrow!
Sometimes it is just relaxing to get out and walk at sunset and beyond. A favorite time of day, it simply doesn’t last long enough!
Hoping your August is off to a pleasant beginning!

What do you think Adam did in the garden of Eden since there were no weeds? Mow grass? There were no lawn mowers as we know them. And there was no rain but water came up from the ground. Pruning maybe? Oh yes planting seeds. And then walking in the garden with God as He saw the beauty of his labor. How wonderful. Have a week that is blessed in every way.
Thank you Alice for those wonderful thoughts that you shared. It was a perfect world that He created until sin entered.
Alice, sorry I hit send before I finished. Wishing you a week filled with His blessings!
Beautiful post, Pam. I am amazed at your (and Butch’s!) talents in gardening. Lovely. And the photo of the girls is precious. The Bottega dessert looks so delicious, and I am sure that it was. Love to all.
Thank you Patti. Wishing you a lovely week!
Happy August!
I don’t like to rush things, but autumn is my favorite season!
I love the aerial view of your garden, so beautiful! Your crepe myrtles are stunning~ your posts, Pam & Butch, are always so uplifting, thank you and I’m looking forward to Monday Morning Blooms tomorrow!
Jenna
Thank you Jenna ♥️🙏🏻
Your crepe myrtles are simply beautiful. Loved the aerial view of your garden. I feel like I want to visit Birmingham just to go to Bottega. The girls are beautiful and enjoying the time with you. How glorious it is to spend time with grandchildren. You are enriching their lives and they will forever remember these times. See you tomorrow at Monday Morning Blooms.
Thank you Dianne. You know how special grands are!
Pam and Butch, Your drone shot is wonderful. Your garden is beautiful and the crape myrtles are gorgeous! The Japanese beetles have been relentless! The honey bee shots are great. The semi freddo looks delicious! We are getting a break from the excessive heat today and it’s so nice. The girls are always a joy to see. The sunset shots are fantastic! Enjoy your Sunday friends! Clara ❤️
Clara, thank you for your sweet comments. Enjoy the week and a break from the heat!
It’s always beautiful — and a good reminder on seed saving. I need to get some of my overgrown sweet peas from home up here at the cottage. I wonder if I can dig up and transplant some of it now or if I must wait till spring? I’ll sprinkle the seeds too, but if they take 10 years like those you shared here, I’m not sure I can wait! Happy weekend!
Jeanie, 10 years is too long to wait for a bloom. Have a lovely week!
As ever, a joy-filled post…..the birds-eye view of the garden seems so “care-free” … not a weed to be seen…The girls beam
with the fun of having their own transportation to the residence of the spoiling duo and if only we could claim a Bottega in
our corner of the world… all those mouth watering treats. Butch’s lessons on the wildlife transitions open a whole area that
we might not know otherwise and oh your crepe myrtle!!! What a treasure trove is your Sabbath visit….bless you…
Thanks so much, Mary. Yes, we are the spoiling duo, but love every minute of it!
That aerial view of the gardens is superb! Enjoying the crepe myrtles that you share! We are low on honey bees as well but have lots of pollinating bees!
The girls are always so wonderful to see. And a peek for tomorrow’s Monday Morning Blooms made me happy!
Happy Sunday Friends!
Thank you Nancy. Wishing you a week filled with adventures!
Oh Pam and Butch, I love your Sunday posts and the views of God’s gifts that you share with us. The girls are growing fast and are adorable as usual. Thank you for sharing.
Hugs and Blessings

Thanks my friend. Wishing you a lovely week!
Good morning, Pam and Butch. Your photos, as always, are glorious. They are such a wonderful start to my Sunday. My favorites today are of course, the girls, the sunsets, and the marvelous dessert. I can just taste it.
Happy August, summer is going in a blink.
Thanks so much, Sandra. Yes, before we know it fall will be here!
Wow, that drone shot is amazing! Someday perhaps you all can write about what took to lay those stones. They are beautiful! I’ve tangled with horse nettle many times and always lost…even with leather gloves. Crepe myrtles are my very favorite tree, and I read once they are among the longest lived trees. I can sit on my screen porch and hear the hum of the bees in mine. Hope you have a wonderful and cooler week!
Thank you Roxanne. I also love crape myrtles and the bees definitely love them. Have a lovely week!
Beautiful Pam and Butch! Love your drone shot and the girls are adorable! Happy Sunday ♥
Thanks, Mary
