“…I cannot endure to waste anything so precious as autumnal sunshine by staying in the house. So I have spent almost all the daylight hours in the open air.”
~Nathaniel Hawthorne
Hello sweet friends! Are you seeing any signs of autumn in your area? I am anticipating all of the beauty of the season. I am joining fourteen table stylists for a Fall Tablescape Blog Hop hosted by my lovely friend, Rita at Panoply.
“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.”
Proverbs 25:11
There is no more serene place to set an autumn table than my garden!
“There is a wealth to September with its bounty of saffron blooms and golden light and flaxen grasses. Its gifts for the taking – for those who know true riches.”
~Greta Crank
The links for all of the table stylists are at the bottom of this post.
The centerpiece of zinnias, dahlias, blushing hydrangeas, gomphrena, celosia, and coleus jumped over from yesterday’s Teatime in the Cottage.
As the days begin to cool and the humidity wanes, autumn is my favorite time to set a table in the garden.
The saffron-colored cloth is a French made tapestry that was given to me by a long-time friend. Its rich colors remind me of fall leaves!
The tablesetting is simple and not fussy (I am often prone to fussy).
Vintage Johnson Brothers “harvest time” dinnerware is stacked on wicker chargers that provide texture. A petite twine pumpkin sits in each teacup.
Adagio maiden grasses with their plumes are the backdrop for my autumnal table. I love the texture that the maiden grasses give to the garden!
“Autumn seemed to arrive suddenly that year. The morning of the first September was crisp and golden as an apple.”
~J. K. Rowling
Autumn light is magical!
The Sunshine Cottage (my adult playhouse) basks in September’s light!

Sweet Pam, this is such a gorgeous welcome to one of my most favorite seasons. I am anxiously awaiting its arrival, but summer is being reluctant to leave. It is going to be 95 today. Your table is stunning with the beautiful French tablecloth and color rich flowers. They both make a lovely accompaniment to the pretty Johnson Brothers china. Your opening quote by Hawthorne describes my sentiments exactly about this season. Wishing you a day of joy and blessing, my dear friend!

Be still my heart – Autumn in all its glory, thanks to Pam’s ingenuity and keen sense of what is beautiful. That table covering is a treasure and may it never know so much as a fallen crumb… From a distance I thought the cups held a scoop of chocolate
ice cream..and then again, why not? The golden hues of Fall in your lovely garden setting opens September to all the possibilities the balance of the month will hold. What a visual gift this table setting has been, with the promise of more to come.
Mary, your comments are heartwarming. Happy Autumn!
The deep colors of autumn and the bounty of the garden create a lovely table, one that I would sit at long past dinner. The tapestry is beautiful and its texture plays off the botanical elements so well. I’m looking forward to having al fresco dinners as September cools down.

Pam, your French tapestry is so beautiful! I love that particular shade of yellow, especially in the Fall. The backdrop of maiden grass dancing in the background is stunning. Is that grass a perennial? What a lovely, lovely tablescape!! The weather here is so delightful that on Saturday I treated myself to a day “off”…stayed on the porch all day with a stack of magazines, beautiful music, and a pitcher of sweet tea. Bliss!!!
Thanks so much Roxanne. The grass is a perennial. Your day off sounds perfect to me!

This is just beautiful! I am SO excited for fall, too! I noticed the slightest twinge of autumn here as I sat outside with my dear neighbor friend the other day. We both commented on the tiny bit of coolness in the breeze, and my heart was warmed with the realization that our dear and merciful Lord has allowed me to live to see another of my favorite seasons. He is so good – way better to me than I will ever deserve! So wonderful to visit with you today, sweet friend, and catch up on the posts I have missed lately. God bless you always!

Lovely table Pam, and setting it outside with the tall Maiden grass as a back drop is just stunning. I never notice that grass before, so does in bloom in the fall? Now I would like some for my front, or back yard – or both 🙂
Thanks so much. The plumes begin in August. I like the texture especially for fall!

Pam, what a beautiful Fall setting. I fell in love with your gorgeous tapestry tablecloth. It is so rich and unique. Definitely, a classic. It reminds me so much of all of the lovely embroidery wall hangings that lined the walls of some of the stately homes. Your floral centerpiece really complements this lovely piece and really makes a powerful statement in your stunning garden setting. So inviting.

Your Autumn tablescape captures the season so beautifully, Pam! The french tapestry is such a nice base for your lovely place settings. I find myself lingering outside just a bit longer with each passing day, so Mr. Hawthorne’s quote sums up my feelings for Fall perfectly. Enjoy your gorgeous garden, Suzanne.
