Hello sweet friends and Happy Tuesday. Is it hot where you live? Our heat index was 104 yesterday! Our long range forecast shows 90’s for the next nine days!!
“The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him.”
Nahum 1:7
I decided it was time to shine a spotlight on one of my favorite garden flowers…daylilies. The daylily (or day lily) is an amazingly, almost maintenance free perennial. It is easy to grow, virtually disease and pest free, and able to survive drought. That is a win for the gardener!
“Bold Awakening” is always the first daylily to bloom in my garden. It is a cream yellow with purple eye above green throat with blooms that are 6.5 inches.
Raindrops on the blooms…magical!
The daylily’s botanical name, Hemerocallis, comes from Greek hemera (“day”) and kallos (“beauty”). The name is appropriate since each beautiful flower lasts only one day. Despite the common name, it is not a true lily and grows from fleshy roots. True lilies grow from onion-like bulbs and are from the genus Lilium.
Daylilies can range in color from sunny yellows and blushing pinks to deep purples and electric greens!
“Endless Beauty” is rose pink with a lemon ruffled edge and a large green throat. The bloom is 7.5 inches.
“Echoes of Mercy” is a lavender-rose with a purple eye above a green throat, with blooms that are 5 inches in diameter.
Daylilies are vigorous growers and can be divided every three or four years.
A mature clump of daylilies can produce 200-400 blooms over the course of a month or more. That is a significant amount of blooms!
“Lake Norman Sunset” daylily was a surprise gift from my sweet friend, Mary @ Home Is Where The Boat Is.
I love its pastel coloring, pink with white midribs and green throat. The blooms are 6.25 inches in diameter.
All of my daylilies need dividing and I hope to add more varieties!
I highly recommend daylilies as they add big beautiful blooms and are so easily cared for which makes them a big plus to any garden!
Celebrating our flag today! On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution stating that ” the flag of the United states be 13 stripes, alternate red and white,” and that “the union be 13 stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”
In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson marked the anniversary of that decree by officially establishing June 14 as Flag Day.
Thank you for your visit and gracious comments. Wishing you a delightful day!

Good Morning Pam! Daylilies are the unsung heroes of the summer garden and yours are beauties! I was deadheading ours yesterday before the heat and humidity sent me scurrying indoors. I have several clumps that need to be divided this fall. Glad your Lake Norman Sunset is thriving! Happy Tuesday and Flay Day ♥
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Thank you, Mary. It is too hot to do anything outdoors!!
Nancy says
What lovely Daylilies you have! Such beauties! Ours are just starting to bud. I think in less then a month I’ll have Mom’s lilies blooming. Although, our first lily that shows itself quite early is the Lemon Lily. Once again… Mom planted the lilies here in the garden.
The Lake Norman Sunset Lily is such a delight to see and how wonderful to know it came from Mary!
We are to turn hot this week as well… which means the Purple Kayak may come out!
Happy Tuesday!
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Your mom’s garden continues to thrive…so amazing. Can’t wait to see the purple kayak and you!

Here in Maine we are still enjoying pleasant temperatures which make me forget hot! I noticed yesterday buds on day lilys so it won’t be long before they add color to the landscape.
Pam @ Everyday Living says
I bet daylilies thrive in your Maine garden.

Beautiful and faithful bloomers, daylilies are! I inherited at least two varieties in my little landscape, and am still waiting on a couple more to bloom to see if it’s three types. I love the surprises! Happy Flag Day!
Pam @ Everyday Living says
You’re having fun waiting on surprises!
Penny at Enjoying The Simple Things says

Absolutely beautiful, Pam. I think mine are either behind the times or not doing well. To be determined. I love the colors of these!
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Thanks so much, Jeanie!

Pam, Your day lilies are gorgeous! I love all the colors. Day lilies are so pretty in a landscape. I don’t have anything but ditch lilies at the moment but may further explore planting some day lilies next year. The ditch lilies multiply quickly and so far have been left alone by the varmints so that’s a good sign. It’s so hot here too! Hoping the temps go back to normal soon. Stay cool my friend! Clara❤️
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Thank you, Clara. I encourage you to add daylilies, they really require little, and give a lot. Stay cool, dear one

Happy Flag Day Pam! Your daylilies are beautiful, wonderful photos! Keep cool 😅
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Thank you, Jenna. Staying inside this week 😌
Nancy Sharp says
Your daylillies are so pretty. They are very different from the lillies I see around here. The green part looks the same, but ours are white. They were in our landscaping when we bought our house.
I love the verse you chose today. I love reading all the verses that say “He knows me”.❤️
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Thank you, Nancy. I am so happy that the verse was a blessing.
Heritage Hall says
Your verses are always a blessing, dear Pam. Our flag continues to wave in front of our home, particularly today.
We hit 100 this week and climb to about 104 next week – mercy, mercy. Can you imagine no air conditioning?
Bless the pioneers of old. Mary’s Sunset lily is a lovely complement to the other colorful blooms in that bed. Pour
yourself a tall, iced glass of whatever and think Christmas….
Pam @ Everyday Living says
I am so happy to read that the verses are a blessing. Heat index is 107 here today. No outdoor activity for me. Iced tea sounds perfect. Stay inside and cool, Mary!

Your day lily’s are beautiful! I love the colors and how refreshing they look. They must be tough to hold up under the heat. Oh, It is so stinking hot here. The humidity is about more than I can deal with during the day. I hear it’s going to get worse though. I am already wanting cooler temps. Happy Flag Day. Hugs and blessings, Cindy
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Thank you, Cindy. The heat index was 107 here, too hot for outdoor activity. Stay cool!

Gosh, yours are beautiful! I wish I could get mine to grow like this!!! I’m just not gifted in this area…AT ALL!!!!!! Anything thriving out there is purely by accident or the grace of God!🙄
Pam @ Everyday Living says
You are so talented, I think you can do anything!
Lu Ann says
Your day lily’s are beautiful. What a joy to see them. I so enjoy the verses that go with your posts. Another way to say thank you to God every day.
Pam @ Everyday Living says
You are so sweet and thank you Lu Ann. Amen!

Daylilies are just the perfect plant…they bloom despite me! It’s so reassuring to see that first hint of green poking through the soil at the end of winter. Do you fertilize yours? What do you use? Our heat index today was 108. After some early morning coffee on the porch, I moved back into the A/C. Stay cool, my friend.
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Roxanne, 107 heat index here. Much too hot to be outdoors. I will have to ask RM about fertilizer. Stay inside and stay cool’

Pam your day lilies are just beautiful. I love all the combination of colors. We are having record heat up here in Illinois too. 100 degrees today and almost the same for the next few days. I feel so blessed to have AC. Have a nice week. Stay cool. xoxo Kris
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Thank you, Kris. It would be unbearable without AC!

Beautiful Pam. Waiting for mine to bloom. You have such a variety. Stay out of this heat. I couldn’t believe the heat when I walked out my door.
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Thank you, Dianne. The heat is brutal this week!
Nancy Ruegg says
Your daylily varieties are stunning, Pam. Ours are the everyday sunshine yellow variety. I am thankful they’re hardy and easy to care for (No green thumb here!)–except when the leaves start to turn yellow and brown. As you know, it’s quite a chore to keep up with pulling them so the plants look their best. But when our five-year old granddaughter says, “Nana, your yard looks so pretty!”, then it’s worth it!
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Thank you, Nancy. Gardening is always trial and error. Daylilies are almost maintenance free which is a great for any gardener!
Bonnie Morgan says
Wow, Pam! Your daylilies are gorgeous. I love the varieties you have.
So very beautiful!

Thank you, Bonnie!

we dug up some orange lilies from my mom’s yard before we sold her house 18 month ago and i transplanted them in my garden. it’s a real joy to see them coming into bloom this spring. i’m so grateful for their beauty and reminder of the home she and dad shared for all those years …

Absolutely lovely, and they remind me of summers at my Aunt’s house.

Our Oriental Lilies have just started blooming. Our Day Lilies usually bloom closer to July 4th which is why we always called them 4th of July Lilies growing up. I love the range of colors you can find them in and I love that that they are perennials.and keep coming back each year.
Pam says
Pam, it is SO HOT here. The humidity was down yesterday though, so it wasn’t too bad, but it’s muggy today. Your daylilies are gorgeous! I love daylilies so much. When my sister moved to Florida, she gave me a bunch of hers, and I planted them at our previous house. They were so beautiful-all different variations. I miss them so much. I agree, they were so easy to care for, and I looked forward to seeing them every day. I need to plant some here!

Beautiful daylilies Pam and Mary’s gift of the Lake Norman sunset is a wonderful addition to your lovely collection! Heat index of 107? Yikes that’s hot!! Wishing you a lovely week and may your air conditioner never break down.
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Thank you, Kim. With this heat, it concerns me that our A/C is old. Wishing you a wonderful week!
