“Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds.”
Psalm 36:5
Trees and flowers grace the October landscape with awesome beauty, and it’s all gazed upon by the heavens!
Since October is fading fast and fall color doesn’t hang on forever, I decided to see what changes were taking place around the area. Although some of our trees and flowers did turn a bit earlier, it does look as if peak color overall is happening right now!
Not only are crepe myrtles a long lasting southern summer bloomer…they also provide nice autumn shades of red, this one by our driveway.
Our sugar maple typically looks like this one, but since it doesn’t this season, we rely on this backup tree nearby to show the best orange around! This tree is one of our favorites in the fall.
Maples get a lot of accolades for their fall colors and rightly so, but…
…gingkos (or ginkgos if you prefer) with their awesome yellow shades do rival maples and others for our attention. This one even has our pumpkins smiling!
I had to trespass someone’s yard to get this pic but I went unnoticed by the owner. (Truthfully I think I remained on public ROW). I would imagine plenty of people stop by, or at least slow down for a viewing!
Even our local cotton growers are partial to yellow when preparing bales for transport to the gin!
While it is not unusual for me to include a food pic, tiramisu and a cappuccino in this case, I normally do not showcase the foodie who is about to partake. Since today is PJ’s birthday, and we were out at her favorite place to dine last Thursday, I thought I would include a scene from our time on the patio at Bottega in Birmingham! She won’t mind, and I’m not telling her age, only that she is still younger than I am!
We found a row of trees that appear to be the same type and age but are all at different stages of fall turning. I find that interesting and puzzling. I know this is nothing profound but I only wonder what makes them behave differently? Perhaps trees are just like people…ha!
This was the middle tree in the group. The yellow and orange leaves confined to the inner parts while being surrounded by those slow to change made for a unique display!
And finally, the one on the right is beautiful but altogether different from its neighbors. This phenomenon is what makes autumn so diverse and awesome.
It was hard to get the right angle to see my entire selected “row of trees”, but PJ helped me get this shot which gives you an overall look without being too far away.
I hope you saw the mallards on the pond in last week’s post. I found them again a few days ago sitting on their favorite log.
Spotted last week high atop Lookout Mountain…would it be safe to assume it is owned by an Elvis fan? And it’s definitely a bright fall color!
Even the ornamental oak varieties we found by the railroad trestle are sporting some nice hues and helping give the old trestle a face lift of sorts!
However, maybe the railroad is ok on its own and doesn’t need a complete face lift? But, a little autumn make-up doesn’t hurt!
Pam had an opportunity to catch a sunset last week while visiting with friends on Lookout Mountain in Mentone in North Alabama.
We don’t do tricks around our place, and hopefully you will have a week of only treats at yours!

Happy belated birthday to Pam! And the pictures and talk of trestles made me think of one of our favorite Doc Watson’s songs, “The Greenville Trestle High.” Love that song, and now I have it humming through my head! God bless you all.
Thank you for the birthday wishes, Cheryl. I understand when a song is playing in your head and you can’t cut it off!
