“When I thought, “My foot slips,” your steadfast love, O Lord, held me up. When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul.”
Psalm 94:18-19
My trailblazing crew is suited up and ready to ride.
Today’s post is simply a walk in the yard, through the garden, followed by a stroll for a couple of miles through the winter woods! I first spotted this red-bellied woodpecker, not to be confused with a red-headed woodpecker. But again, why is a woodpecker with a not-so-noticeable red belly, and a very noticeable red head, not called a red headed woodpecker? I’m not upset by this, just wondering.
I search the sky often, and while in the garden Friday, I was glad I looked up. This bald eagle soared over our house for about 15 minutes. I am always excited to see my favorite bird!
Moving on down by the creek, ferns were plentiful, providing a nice green touch to a landscape that can seem really drab in January.
Moss adds a soft background for ferns and roots. Moss and ferns love the shady, moist environment.
This old log was so brittle looking that I didn’t think it wise to use it to cross to the other side. It has probably been decaying for many years.
I named this “The Crossing”, a spot where wildlife has crossed so much over time that the banks are worn down quite a bit!
Not Niagara, but still nice, and I walked here from the house!
Water is one of nature’s architects, taking years to shape some landscapes, yet able to change others drastically and forever in a matter of moments!
The winter woods.
It’s not a long walk to the river so I dropped by. It appeared lazy and muddy, but still a pleasing winter scene with Lookout Mountain rising in the distance.
A rectangular rock that looks like a natural table displays a variety of gourmet mosses! However, I chose to hike back to the house to have lunch!
The winter woods can look gray and void of color if observed from a distance, but a close look reveals something altogether different.
Not all is dead or dormant, even in mid January!
I was surprised to walk up on this feeding doe without being detected. I saw her before she saw me but in a matter of seconds she was off and gone, giving me that familiar white flag that gives the whitetail deer its name.
A blue sky above Lookout Mountain greeted me as I topped the ridge. This is a nice view, even with an undesirable cell tower in the photo! At least the tower isn’t very noticeable.
One of our rye, oat, and winter wheat fields “where the deer and the antelope play” in the winter. Except, we don’t have antelope in Alabama. It is here for them however, if they show up someday.
This former tree, now retired, is wrapped in a nice green blanket. Nature’s fleece?
Thanks for coming along on our walk! Have a blessed week!

Happy very rainy Sunday from SC! Your moss covered log may be one of my very favorite photos. I love seeing a bright green carpet of moss in our woods. I need Butch’s keen eye to help me identify an animal I see way up our driveway just before sunrise…I’m so nearsighted, I can’t tell if it is a fox, coyote, or dog. It looks at me and the dogs, then casually turns and slips into the woods. Hope you have a great week!

Thanks Roxanne, we had a cold rain all day yesterday. Sun came out briefly this morning and now gray skies. Have a wonderful week!

The moss and fern, the eagle against a perfect blue sky, the waterfalls, the green grass where the white tail grazes, the faces of beautiful children and the words of peace from Numbers 6:24-26. A beautiful Sunday morning blessing…thank you!

Thank you, dear one. Blessings for your week!

Such a nice stroll in woods. The soft green grass would indeed be a feast for the deer. We have a nice flat field near us and it’s a dining area for the deer. It is next to the bottoms so many deer gather there. The local resident deer love our yard as it’s the way back to the woods! That eagle is so majestic! The woodpecker was nice to see as I mostly just hear them as I don’t go outside looking for source of the pecking most of the time. The children look like they’re ready to go exploring. The river is always pretty to look at and enjoy. I have always found it amazing how the water cuts such beautiful patterns in the stone. Enjoy your day. Clara❤️

Your region reminds me so much of ours too, being snuggled in by the Appalachian Mountains. WInter can be a great time to really see the topography, as your photos show. We have bald eagles fly by, but I have never been lucky enough to see one for myself. Happy Sunday, Richardsons.
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Thank you, Rita. I hope you will one day see a bald eagle fly over!
