Happy February 29th sweet friends! Tomorrow we welcome March, which can be warm and sunny, but it can also be cold and windy in our Appalachian Foothills of NE Alabama!
“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.”
Psalm 19:14 (ESV)
In early February the cottage garden starts to wake up. Green shoots begin to break through the soil and the bright yellow harbingers of spring start showing their happy faces by middle to late February.
RM began work on the cottage garden in the summer of 2021. We planted daffodil bulbs in early November with a little help from EM and EK!
An older photo of daffodils found growing near the site of the original home place that once stood on the farm. These daffodils have grown here for many years, and continue to emerge every year, announcing new life, but also reminding us of days gone by!
The old chimney served as the perfect background and the sun was in the perfect spot for this special photo from a few years ago. The chimney has been preserved and remains, and the daffodils always return to signal that spring is just around the corner!
I can’t help but smile when I look out the cottage window and see daffodils in bloom when everything else is still sleeping in the garden!
“A daffodil bulb will divide and redivide endlessly. That’s why, like the peony, it is one of the few flowers you can find around abandoned farmhouses still blooming and increasing in numbers fifty years after the farmer and his wife have moved to Heaven.”
~Cassandra Danz
Introduced in 1938, multiple award-winning ‘Dutch Master’ has become the standard for large yellow daffodils. It boasts very large, showy golden-yellow flowers. Noted for its superior performance, it has become a strong substitute for the most recognized heirloom daffodil, King Alfred.
Annuals such as zinnias, and a few perennials will occupy portions of the raised beds later in the season…but for now, daffodils rule!
“I plant them in big clumps with a trusty shovel. I make several large holes all around and put quite a few in. That’s why it makes such a spectacular look when they bloom.”
~Tasha Tudor
Taking notice beyond the daffodils reminds us that not much is happening outside the cottage garden.
I know that our readers are the best. Some of you who returned to read my replies to your comments on Tuesday’s post read Karla’s comments. You replied to her that you would be praying as she is dealing with cancer. This touched my heart and I know it was a great encouragement to her. She is a talented writer and has touched many with her story. If you want to read more about Karla, she writes a beautiful blog, Flannel With Faith. I love that a sweet and caring community has been built among our readers. Many of you have shared prayer requests with me and I am praying for you. Wishing you a grace-filled day!

The Danz quotation is a beautiful reminder that when we plant for the long term the rewards are many. Sweet memory that EM and EK helped to plant the daffodils and the daffodils sunny faces remind me of the grands bright faces. I remember that March in NC was windy. Mama would say it was the Ides of March.
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Thank you, Alice. The girls will always have the memory of planting and seeing them come back year after year! It turned cold today!

How can one look at a daffodil and not smile?!? I have enjoyed my drives through the countryside and seeing drifts of daffodils on old abandoned farms.
I was up in the woods and looked back towards the house to discover a large bed of daffodils I had forgotten…I planted them 30+ years ago and my azaleas have gotten so large, it obscured them! Thank you for sharing Karla’s blog, I will definitely be reading it. Pam, you really do have a community of amazing followers, and I love reading their comments! Not only do your beautiful tablescapes attract people, but so does your faith, your cheerful outlook on life even during hard times, and your genuineness (is that a word?). And we all look forward to Butch’s Sunday walk-abouts! Love you, my sweet friend.

Good AFternoon Pam, Such a cheery post. I love daffodils and miss them every spring as we do not have them here in the desert. So thank you for sharing yours with us. I will head over to Karla’s Blog. I did not see her comment on Tuesday but I will be sure to read and pray.

Pam, I actually caught myself breathing a deep sigh of relief and happiness as I scrolled through these springtime pics. I know it’ll be awhile ’til any kind of life appears up here on the Cape so you know I’ll be stopping by often just to sit with you and enjoy the next season reappearing in your neck of the woods
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Thank you, Linda. I am so glad the daffodils gave you a sigh of relief and happiness! Wishing you a lovely week.

What cheerful daffodils you have to greet you right now, Pam! A neighbor brought me a pot of narcissus and they stopped blooming so I planted them outdoors. I hope they’ll pop up next Spring. Happy March!
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Thanks so much, Kitty! Wishing you a lovely Sunday!
Carole @ From My Carolina Home says
Those daffodil photos are wonderful. Are they in full bloom at your house now? Mine are just getting going, but I am at a higher altitude than you are.
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Thank you, Carole. They are in full bloom, we have had a lot of rain over the past couple of days, so they look a little weary now.
Jennifer Wise says
These are so beautiful! I love the colors. My mom always told me “spring starts at the coast” (and moves inland)–I live further from a coast right now than I ever have, so we still have several weeks’ wait until we get daffodils. So I especially love seeing yours! Visiting from Love Your Creativity.
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Thanks so much for your visit Jennifer. I have never heard that saying, but it certainly makes sense. Wishing you a lovely week!

Kim says
Pam, those daffodils are stunning – you are right in that they are harbingers of spring! The photos are beautiful and I’ll admit to some daffodil envy since we are still buried under snow here. That variety that you planted looks amazing – they are so large and pretty. I agree with Lisa – how can you not smile when you see their pretty faces. I hope you are having a wonderful week!
Pam @ Everyday Living says
Thank you, Kim! I guess by this time you are ready for the snow to melt and for some signs of spring to arrive. The daffodils have been saturated by rain. But, they are holding up well 🌼
Awakening Wonders says
