Happy October friends! I rarely post on Wednesday, but I couldn’t miss the opportunity to welcome my favorite month!
“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.”
Numbers 6:24-26 (ESV)
The Sunshine Cottage porch welcomes October with a few new friends that have gathered!
Da (Butch) cannot help himself when it comes to having fun with our grandchildren. I never know what he may bring home for them to enjoy. The porch has been decorated for EM, EK, and WL. Little brother is not quite eight months old, but I have a feeling that his siblings will make sure he gets in on the fun!
For the second year in a row, our best source for pumpkins decided to focus on planting other crops instead. We have made several trips here and there to find enough, still not finding the larger ones for stacking. However, I did find this Knucklehead and bringing it home was a must!
The grands had the best time naming each new scarecrow. I was also told the age of each one. EM suggested I write them down, so I wouldn’t forget! Meet my favorite little scarecrow, this is Zinnia, age 2. I just love her cute legs!
Not only does Da buy scarecrows, he also finds metal signs to place around the cottage and garden.
We couldn’t part with the cotton boll wreaths on the French doors, even though they are showing their age. We added smaller wreaths within the cotton ones which added color!
Charlotte Daisy was beyond excited to be released from Da’s workshop to the Sunshine Cottage porch. She said, at last fresh air and sunshine! For newer readers Charlotte Daisy came to live with us three years ago and became best friends with EM and EK. Charlotte Daisy was surprised to discover that new friends were joining all the fall activities. Seated next to Charlotte Daisy is Charlie, age 4, the only boy scarecrow.
Da added another grandchild scarecrow to the other three. DJ is the sweetest and happiest baby! EM decided that these scarecrows would now be called by their own first names. This change certainly makes it easier for grandparents to remember the names! The John Deere tractor belonged to our son when he was a little boy. It is very heavy and hard to pedal, but our grands still love attempting to ride it!
Cornelia is seven years old and the small chair she is sitting on is 100 years old, or perhaps older. She is overjoyed to make her debut on the Sunshine Cottage Porch and to welcome October!
“Imagination is immensely powerful, as it turns the ordinary into the extraordinary, little ones into kings and queens, and makes the old young again!”
~Butch Richardson
The small wheelbarrow is another project that Butch loves to take on, probably for the grands. He places a variety of “fallish” (not ghoulish) items in it every year. It is always similar, but also has a few new items displayed. Sometimes things are added as the season progresses.

Have you ever wondered how much time and money has been spent through the centuries to scare poor old crows? And all they’ve ever done was to be guilty of trying to come by a decent meal!
Thank you for your visit and gracious comments. Wishing you a memorable October!

Beautiful! Happy Fall 🍁🍁
Thanks so much, Janice. I hope you are doing well!
Good morning Pam and Butch, The Sunshine Cottage is ready for October with its stack of pumpkins, wheelbarrow, signs and scarecrow family! I love the new addtions and their names and I had to chuckle that EM suggested you write their ages down, so you wouldn’t forget. 😊 I love the addition of the smaller wreath nested inside the cotton boll ones too! Happy Wednesday🍂🧡🍁
Thanks so much Mary! I wrote down all of their names and ages as Ella Mae told me to do. The next day she asked if I remembered their names. They keep me on my toes!
So much fun! Loved that everyone has a name…and age, of course…and it’s to be noted AND written down…so you don’t forget…our gentle reminder of late also…
Those pumpkins are magnificent…all the special decorations and their stories are priceless. What a treat you’ve shared with us today! A very happy October wish to you and your sweet family too!
Sue, your comments are so sweet. I am so glad you enjoyed! I can imagine your weather is beautiful!
The cottage is — as usual — just adorable this year! It’s filled with all the fun of all and all its beauty too. I know how much time it takes to decorate so beautifully and I really admire all the work and effort you put into this and I’m so glad you share it with all of us!
Jeanie, thanks so much! It is work, but we love doing it for our grands and are so happy to share with sweet readers!
Pam, I think writing down all the names is a great idea. Maybe EM should buy you a notebook for your birthday. 😉
The cottage and surrounding area look great. Butch gets an A+ for best Da in decorating. the smaller wreaths i side the cotton bolls are a great look. Happy October!
Thank you, Rita. The following day she asked if I remembered their names. I could name them without my notes 😉 Yes, Da deserves an A+, the grands think he is the greatest and I agree!
Hi Pam,
I love all your scarecrows. They are all adorable. I love that your grands get involved with them too. Such good memories you are creating. Happy October 1st. Enjoy the new week.
Hugs,
Kris
Kris, you are so sweet. We love making memories!
Butchs’ imagination is in full force today. I enjoyed his comment. I believe his favorite month is October as well. Decorating for Fall is a favorite of mine and so I don’t fully understand why people aren’t planting as many pumpkin patches. And what about Starbucks pumpkin spice latte? Hope we aren’t bringing pumpkins in from Foreign countries. Your grands are surely treasured by their grandparents. (And so are your readers) your stuffed wheelbarrow testifies
To the length Butch goes to to see the joy it brings to them. Oh to be there,
Thank you Alice! As you know, Butch is very talented. He has a wonderful work ethic, and never slacks on whatever project he is working on. We both are so overjoyed with four grandchildren! We so appreciate your encouragement through our years of blogging! I know your fall decor will be
beautiful!
The Sunshine Cottage porch is all decked out for fall! It’s so colorful and fun! The scarecrow kids are adorable. I love your metal signs. Your door wreaths look great! I’m ready for the weather to cool down. It’s been hovering around 90 each day but thankfully with lower humidity. It does get cooler in the evening. Last night at 10 p. m. it was still 77! Happy October! Clara❤️
Thank you Clara! Butch and I have fun decorating the cottage for the seasons. Our daytime temps have been hovering around 82. Nights are in the low 60’s. Strange that you are hotter than us❤️
Everything is so fun and festive for Fall. Happy October!
Thanks so much Debbie!
Happy October, Pam! Sunshine Cottage’s porch looks beautiful decorated for autumn. I know your grandbabies must love it with all of the precious scarecrow friends, stacked pumpkins, and mums. The cotton boll wreaths are so pretty on your antique French doors. Wishing you a most beautiful and blessed day, sweet friend!
Thank you Shannon! The grands love it. Wishing you a beautiful October, dear friend!
So adorable and sweet Pam! I know the grands can’t resist moving things around! I love Butch’s quote today, it reminds me of all the beauty he sees on his Sunday walks. Great update on the cotton bole wreaths too~ Everything looks so inviting and cozy, you just want to walk on in!
Thank you Jenna. Your comments are always encouraging!
Happy October 1st Pam…and Butch…and of course the grands. How delightful the Sunshine Cottage looks….so full of fun and pumpkins. How sweet to suggest you write ages etc down, so you don’t forget. I know you just want to hug them all the time. I feel the same about my grands…no matter what they do or say. Also, great idea to use another wreath inside the cotton boll wreaths…they look mah-va-lous! And practical too. Enjoy this wonderful month of October. Blessings Always 🥰🍁🙏🏻🌻🏈🐿️🎃🍂😊
Thank you Kari. EM asked me the following day if I remembered their names and ages. I actually remembered only because I did write down all of the info. Yes, we love them so much just as you do yours. 🧡🙏🏻🍁🎃🏈🧡
everything is decorated so thoughtfully pretty for those precious grands. best grandparents! I love seeing decorations like this because I’m definitely not a Halloween person.
Thank you, Nancy. I have never been crazy about Halloween. I do my best to keep it child friendly!
Pam, Sunshine Cottage looks like a very happy place! I love the wheelbarrow with its scarecrow family. Names and ages are very important indeed. The wreaths look so beautiful on the doors. I’m with you on the ghoulish Halloween stuff, it is so creepy…I like Happy Halloween!
Thank you Roxanne! I want it always to be a happy place for children or adults. I also like Happy Halloween🧡🍁🧡
Welcome, October! Oh Pam and Butch, I couldn’t wait to get to your place in the fall (every season! Lol) Welcome to Cornelia! I’m jealous wishing I was there too! Your scarecrows, wreaths (wonderful idea to add the other ones), mums, signs, …all of it…make for such an amazing welcome to my favorite season! I love Butch’s quote! I picked up pumpkins of all shapes and colors to decorate for each grand. Your precious grands (and all of us!) will cherish all you do to make each season fun and special. I pray for you all and send love always. 💚🙏💚 🎃 🍂
Karla, I was thinking of you when I was decorating the porch. I knew that you love fall as much as I do. I am glad you were able to get pumpkins for each of your grands. How was your appointment last Friday? I have been praying for you as I always do. Sending love and prayers 🙏🏻🧡🍁💛🍁🧡🙏🏻
That’s so precious, Pam! Yes, you know how I love fall!
The appointment was so wonderful. What a great doctor! I will have bloodwork and infusion next week here. The end of October I’ll go back to KC for scans and more bloodwork. He showed the “kids” my most recent scans and tumors that had returned to liver (came back just 18 months after surgery). Optimistically, I’m certain this treatment the last 5 months have helped! I’m so thankful to God to have an expert in my corner of the world now. I love you and appreciate you more than you know! 💚♥️🙏🥰
Karla, you have a wonderful way with words and your sweet comments warm our hearts! Love and prayers always 🧡🙏🏻🎃🍁
Aww. Thank you, Pam! That’s so kind of you! It’s true that when I think of God’s beauty, I will visit your place in my heart and mind! Through your blog I feel as though I’m there sometimes. I love how God connects us all that way! Much love and prayers to you always too! 🍁🍂💚💚🙏
Oh Pam, I always love a visit to your Cottage . . . and those matching cotton bol wreath within a wreath on those beautiful doors is absolutely splendid.
Happy fall to you and yours, dear one. And thanks for the prompt to think about heading out to hunt for a pumpkin or two.
Thank you Linda. I am happy you came over to the cottage to visit! You better get the pumpkins before they are gone!
Such uncompromised beauty and strokes of imagination you have gifted us. I just lost to cyberspace the tome of gratitude I had written …what? gone…. so sorry..
it was loving and special….
Thank you Mary. I am so sorry you lost your comment. I feel your pain!
Pam, the porch looks fantastic and how fun that the grands helped – what memories they will have. The new scarecrows are delightful and the pumpkins and pumpkin signs look great. The mums are so pretty and I like the smaller, colorful wreaths inside the cotton boll ones. Butch has a great eye for decorating. I hope you enjoy every minute of your favorite month dear one!

Pam, Happy October! The grandchildren scarecrows are such fun. I know your grands have fun with this! How special to have them so close by to enjoy daily treats such as this. Very special for you and Butch and for the grands.
You two should create a children’s book with tales of the scarecrow family! It could be very entertaining! ❤️
Mary, you are so sweet ❤️
I love everything about this porch! Y’all certainly have a talent displaying everything! Wonderful! Great post.
Thank you Dolly for your sweet comments!
You and Bruce sure do have a fun time in fixing things up for your grandchildren, Pam! Of course, all of us love to see your creations at the Sunshine Cottage, too. Happy October!
