A Bouquet Of Peonies In The Garden

May 3, 2021~ Everyday Living, Faith, Gardening, Monday Morning Blooms, Spring

Happy Monday dear friends. It has been a busy past few days and in case you missed our exciting news, you can read it here.

“Praise the Lord! Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!”
‭‭Psalm‬ ‭106:1‬ ‭

It is Monday Morning blooms with my friends Lidy, Mary, and Shirley. I am in the garden for this edition of flower therapy! Be sure to read to the bottom of this post to find out my winner of the beautiful book by Victoria, “The Art Of Flowers.”

We planted our first peonies two years ago and this spring we have our first blooms!

The links for my friends’ stunning flower inspirations are at the bottom of this post.

Our common theme for this Monday Morning Blooms was to choose an inspiration photo from the “Art of Flowers” and use our own creativity to copy. I have long admired the beautiful gardens of Carolyn Aiken located on Prince Edward Island not far from where author Lucy Maud Montgomery set the beloved book series, Anne of Green Gables. I thought this was a lovely photo for me to copy and the photo spread of her gardens in the book is definitely inspiring. Carolyn shares her gorgeous gardens, 100-year-old farmhouse, and large pond on her blog, Aiken House & Gardens.

You don’t see a backdrop of peonies as shown in my inspiration photo. My peonies are not located in the garden, but in a couple of spots within our landscape. The tea table was placed among the apricot drift roses that are beginning to bloom, sunshine ligustrums, and limelight hydrangeas. In place of a birdcage, a tall plant stand is filled with several varieties of petunias for long-lasting color!

The table is covered with an embroidered cloth purchased on a trip to St. Thomas many years ago. I have always made sure to find a memento from each place we have traveled. Do you?

We have planted three varieties of peonies, but only the Festiva Maxima was in full bloom when I photographed the table. I had three blooms and the white bloom front and center is one of the three in the arrangement. The other two white peonies and the stunning pink peony came from a friend’s house. She didn’t know their names and I didn’t take the time to research. Perhaps, someone can identify. There are no arranging skills when using peonies, they make a statement all on their own!

A blue and white teapot to mimic the inspiration picture!

Royal Albert “Lady Carlyle” cup and saucer joins a Grace’s teaware cup and Limoges saucer. I love a mix…not necessarily a match!

A sweet floral teapot replaced the blue and white!

“I love spring anywhere, but if I could choose I would always greet it in a garden.”
~ Ruth Stout

Pam, I’ve long been an admirer of Carolyn Aiken’s gardens too (along with her sweet boat house!) I love the inspiration photo and your pretty peonies and teacups with your garden in the background. Your embroidered tablecloth makes such a pretty memento and souvenir from your travels. Your pink peony looks like ‘Sarah Bernhardt’ which is one of my favorite varieties. As always it’s a treat to join you for some flower therapy. Congrats to Ruthie and Happy Monday ♥

I am so very thrilled and appreciative! Thank you once again. I also have long loved Carolyn Aiken’s garden and interior photos. Wouldn’t it be a dream come true to visit there? You must have had fun with using an inspiration photo for your design this week. I love your chairs and your planter behind the table. Can you tell us about that piece? I sure hope to see more of it. Very pretty-love Lady Caryle and the breathtaking peonies. Yes, indeed, I always buy a (sometimes that is plural) memento from trips.

Smell is a wonderful gift. Peonies will fill your house with their perfume. I’m so glad you are finally getting Blooms. I run outside when I see a rain coming because they simply won’t last in the rain. They are so delicate. I too love the earthly smell that petunias give. They were the first flowers I planted because a neighbor hearing my love of hers gave me some of hers. I. Was about 13 and loved to see them where there had been no flowers. The container you filled with them is beautiful too. Where did you find it? The mass of petunias is beautiful also.

I have loved peonies and I have about 20, several different colors. My first ones came from my mom, who was moving to another home and didn’t need them. I divided them, probably too much but eventually they all bloomed. Then about 20 years ago my daughter was living in her Company rental and asked me to remove about 6 huge plants that I mostly left alone and plunked them in the ground and they are now blooming. And of course, over the years I have purchased a few newer varieties to add to the mix. I have many flowers and I always look forward to spring and all the new blooms. (Who Doesn’t?) I am in agreement that they can stand alone in an arrangement beautifully but does anyone have any ideas to change them up occasionally? Congrats to Ruthie. Next time I am sure I will be the winner!!!

Pam, your peonies are glorious. Oh, how I do love them, they truly are the “Queen of the Garden.” They are also a tough plant, once established, and take little care. A few of mine are beginning to show color, so it won’t be too long before they bloom. Your table is just beautiful and the cloth is lovely. Congratulations to Ruthie, she will enjoy the book. I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. As an April Cornell Brand Ambassador, I was gifted these gorgeous linens! I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.

I am serving my favorite, Earl Gray tea, from an Eileen’s Reserve teapot. Teacups by Grace Teaware and vintage Rose Chintz salad plates by Johnson Brothers add more floral patterns to the mix. Japanese Magnolia blooms were cut from my garden and placed in a lilypad teapot!

The butcher block countertop under a window, was a perfect place for a mini garden. Muscari, hyacinths, tulips, and daffodils danced in the sunlight and filled the cottage with an amazing fragrance!

Happy Tuesday! Welcome to the Sunshine Cottage whe Happy Tuesday! Welcome to the Sunshine Cottage where it is warm and cozy on this cold February day. It is Tea on Tuesdays and I have set a tea table with the “Blue Roses” collection that was a collaboration between @victoriamagazine and @april.cornell The exclusive porcelain pattern and matching linens have been used many times and I still enjoy their blue and white beauty. Instead of fresh flowers, porcelain ones require no arranging. Sweet treats pair perfectly with a traditional English Breakfast tea. Happy first Monday of February! After so many cold Happy first Monday of February! After so many cold days, we are experiencing a tease of spring with a 73 degree day that is forecast. After the gray and cloudy days, I needed a dose of color and decided to set a colorful citrus themed brunch! Using a bird gold and pewter stand, I mixed a citrus medley of lemons, oranges, and limes with pink and white carnations as the centerpiece. The table is highlighted with blue and white dishware. Fresh squeezed orange juice, French-pressed coffee and sweet treats of lemon poppyseed muffins, lemon cake with lemon icing, and lemon pastries are perfect for a small brunch. A faux lemon topiary belonged to my beloved Mother and seemed a perfect addition to a citrus-themed table! You are invited to join me and my Monday Morning Blooms friends, Lidy @frenchgardenhouse Sarah @sjpa48 and Mary homeiswheretheboatsis.net by clicking the LINK in my bio!

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage where I have been fluf Welcome to Sunshine Cottage where I have been fluffing for Valentine’s Day! For many years my Sweetheart and I have celebrated February 14th at home where it is quiet, no reservations are required, and we always have a table by the window!

I love the traditional colors of red and pink! Frilly carnations fill a vintage Staffordshire, ‘Charlotte’ pitcher which rests on an antique Limoges plate with a velvet gold-crowned heart. The plate stack consists of a Royal Stafford ‘Asiatic pheasant’ dinner plate, American Atelier ‘Baroque’ luncheon/salad plate, Johnson Brothers, ‘Winchester’ salad plate, and a vintage pierced Bavarian rose plate! I am a huge fan of mixing colors, patterns, and textures for a collected look.

I have joined 17 table stylists for a Valentine’s Day Blog Hop. Click the LINK in my bio to see all of the Valentine inspiration!

Happy Tuesday! On this very cold winter’s day, I Happy Tuesday! On this very cold winter’s day, I am serving my favorite tea, Earl Grey, in the Sunshine Cottage where it is warm and cozy! The magic of dancing sunlight enhances the table that is dressed with a warm tartan plaid throw repurposed as a tablecloth! ‘Winter Fauna’ bird salad plates from Pottery Barn (many years ago and now discontinued) remind me of the birds I watch from my kitchen window during the winter season. The Grace Teaware set adds more blue and white to the Spode ‘Blue Room’ dinner plates. Sweet treats were placed on a stack of Bordallo Pinheiro plates! A darling Hummel ‘Icy Adventure’ depicts a scene of an outdoor frozen pond with a pair of sweet ice skaters, a rosy cheeked boy and girl who have fallen down on the ice.
