Southern Living In My Everyday Living

“Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for the Lord God is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation”

When you think of the South, you probably think fried chicken, sweet tea, and Southern Living magazine.  You can find the fried chicken and sweet tea on our dinner tables, and Southern Living on our coffee tables. But one of those things is not exclusive to the South. No matter where you live, you have probably heard of, or maybe you’re even a subscriber to the popular magazine. And chances are, you have heard that they recently released their 50th anniversary edition.  I have been a subscriber for more years than I am willing to admit, and it truly is a picture of what living in the South is like.  With the release of their golden anniversary edition, it really hit close to home, and today I want to share with you how my life and Southern Living have had a beautiful intertwining through the years…

There were four covers for their February edition…and you cannot imagine our excitement when they chose a local venue for their anniversary celebration!  All 4 covers were taken at J & D Farms in Southside, Alabama owned by our friends Danny and Jana McEachern…but why is that important to us?!READ MORE

Bookends: Braggin’ Rights

October 15, 2015~ Bookends

“The joys of this Southern life, we polish like old silver.  We are good at stories.  We hoard them, like an old woman in a room full of boxes, but now and then we pull out our best, and spread them out like dinner on the ground.”
Rick Bragg

I rarely race to the bookstore to get a book on its release date.  But when I heard that Rick Bragg’s compilation of previously published essays from the likes of Southern Living, Gun & Garden, Sports Illustrated and Bon Appetit was being released on September 15, you can bet that our local bookstore was on the top of my to-do list for the day!  Let me introduce you to my good friend Rick Bragg.  Or at least I feel like he is my good friend.  That is the nature of his writing…you grow to feel like you know and certainly love this good ole boy from Calhoun County, Alabama.  You will notice quotes throughout this post, and they are all taken from his writing in “My Southern Journey.”
I was introduced to Rick Bragg through a client when she gave me the book “All Over But The Shoutin'”, and I was an immediate fan.  His writing really hits home with me as he speaks of the Appalachian foothills that he loves and calls home.  Calhoun County is the neighboring county to ours and his words come to life when he speaks of all the places I have known and grown up around my entire life.  This fellow Northeast Alabamian certainly earned “braggin’ rights” when he took the Pulitzer Prize in 1996 while writing for the New York Times.  “I was honored to do this book which is a kind of love story to the South.”

Deviled eggs make Rick Bragg want to cry.  Not that they are so tasty, but because they evoke such memories of his grandmother, the matriarch of his family, Ava.  He tells the story of her suffering from mild dementia and how “his people” gathered together in her backyard each June to celebrate her life. Deviled eggs always made an appearance!  Bragg’s love of food and family resonate in my heart.  He captivates his audience by his gift of story-telling that, I believe, is a lost art.  His book is split into five sections…Home, Table, Place, Craft, and Spirit.  Each section is brought to life by experience…experiences that hit home for us Southerners. His essays vary from the South’s reaction to a dusting of snow to his experiences with bad coleslaw to SEC football.  Bragg declares in the chapter titled “Shopping” that he is immune to fashion, loathes to shop, and has decided not to shop again.  He goes on to say that “new shoes feel like you are shuffling around in a box of saltine crackers.  They even sound wrong.”  And although I love shoes, I think he is onto something there.  New shoes are not the most comfortable thing in the world if you think about it!  In his chapter “Fully Dressed”, he goes into the great debate around Thanksgiving: dressing vs stuffing.  “You could find stuffing in sofas, teddy bears, and baseballs.  If you caught a big fish or shot a big deer, or even a big gobbler, you have them stuffed and mounted.  But Thanksgiving turkeys did not have stuffing,  They had dressing.  And that dressing started with an iron skillet of cornbread, mixed with onion, sage and the fatty, golden nectar.  It was baked until a golden crust formed on the top, leaving the inside firm but creamy. It had to be perfect, and it usually was.”  Amen, Mr. Bragg.  Amen.  My mother never “stuffed” a turkey, and in my opinion, she made the best dressing this side of the Mississippi.  It started off just as the story Rick Bragg tells…cornbread in a cast iron skillet.  There are so many things throughout the book that just feel like home, this being one of them.

A week ago last Tuesday, Rick Bragg came home.  And by that, I mean he was at our local Books-A-Million signing his new book.  Katy and I got there early in order to get a good seat only to find out the event was moved from the bookstore into the mall in front of the Sears store.  It was a small intimate setting…completely his comfort zone.  He didn’t have a speech prepared and he decided not to use a microphone.  Nestled right there between Sears where he and his mother shopped while he was a boy, we sat and listened to him do what he does best…tell stories!
“The obituary made me smile.  Ellis Ray of Moundville passed away Saturday…he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, who loved to fish and piddle.  He will be greatly missed.  I mean no disrespect.  Quite the contrary, I smiled because Ellis, whom I never met, is my brother, bound to me not by blood but by a shared habit. We are piddlers.
The whole idea of piddling is to kill time, but without any great effort at all, or even really meaning to.”

“When I was a child, we never bought a tree. We got an ax, or a handsaw, and went into the woods.  It would have been a scene straight off a Christmas card, if we had actually gone hunting for one on our own land, which we did not have.  I guess it was poaching in a way, but it seemed harmless, it was more like we were just thinning the herd, rather than stealing.
That was a long time ago.  I have not stolen a tree, from Alabama or anywhere else, for 35 years.  We buy our trees now, and pay what feels like $900 for a tree cut last Fourth of July, a tree I am afraid to shake too hard, lest it look like something Charlie Brown would have.  You got a much better quality of tree, when it was stole.” “I know that the real color and warmth in us, as a people, is not in the landscape or the sky but in our language, the way we lean the words against each other. We are the best-spoken people on Earth, not in the realm of grammar, perhaps, but in the pictures we paint and hang on the air.
Some things we say are just mysterious, like a friend’s grandmother who is prone to blurt out, ‘Well, I’ll be Johnny.’  We do not know who Johnny is.  I am tired of trying to explain us. I once wrote that a man had enough money to burn a wet dog. I got a call from animal rights activists who wondered why I advocated such.  I told them it was only something we said, and I loved dogs, and…I should have just told them to go see Johnny about it.” In “All Over But The Shoutin” he mentions that he, along with his mother and brothers, grew up living with his grandmother on Roy Webb Road.  This country road is about 20 miles away from us!
Located about 9 miles from our home, Coosa Corner is the place for a fisherman to stop for breakfast before hitting nearby Weiss Lake.  Butch and Seth have eaten sausage biscuits from here many, many mornings before they sat in a boat for the day and called that fishing!
“In a wasteland of tepid tomatoes and mummified chicken fingers, there still exist across the South some fine dishes, served on paper plates, prepared by people who have solved the great mystery of simple food.  Drake’s Citgo on Highway 411 in Leesburg, Alabama, served a mouthwatering pork cutlet on hot biscuit, or about any other part of a pig that can be made to lie flat. Drake’s is now Coosa Corner, but to my big brother, Sam, it will always be Drake’s”

On any given Saturday, weather permitting (or not), thousands of people pour into this large space on US Highway 11 in Collinsville, Alabama known as Trade Day.  And this hits home too, when Rick Bragg writes of his memories and treasures they took away from the flea market…our long time friends are the owners!
“Five years ago, my brother and I drove to a vast flea market in Collinsville, Alabama, to buy a bantam rooster for our mother.  We left with two ducks, two chickens, a Hamilton watch, two fig trees, a sack of green onions, a bone-handled pocketknife, a bushel of sweet potatoes, a four-way lug wrench, a goat named Ramrod, and a ball-peen hammer.
The goat, the size of a Shetland pony, butted my Ford Bronco so hard it rocked on its springs.  That was why I bought the hammer.  I was not riding back with that thing unarmed.
I guess there is some junk here, but I never took any of it home.  Only treasure.”The armadillo.  “The South is their buffet”
Another common thread between me and Rick Bragg: our frustration with this pesky creature.   Or as Bragg calls the roadkill specialist “opossums on a half shell”.  They are frequent visitors on our property…spending their nights digging holes in our yard, being anything but quiet with their armored backs!  And we have declared war.  They dig and dig and make a mess, ruining our yard.  They better hope they don’t make their way back to our garden!
“Their greatest talent is getting run over”
As a three decade plus subscriber, I think the best thing Southern Living has done is add Rick Bragg’s genius writing to the back page of every edition.  I skip over all of the perfectly manicured gardens, charming storybook homes, and sweet & savory recipes to see what he has written for the month!     This should tell you how excited I was to meet him: I was the first person in line for the book signing!  And he could not have been any more warm and personable.  We chatted for 2 or 3 minutes as if no one else was waiting! I have never wandered far from home.  Sure…I have traveled to 40 + countries, but only as a visitor with no intention of staying.  My entire life, I have lived within 9 miles of my childhood home.  There is just something about these “Appalachian foothills” and “my people”.

I highly recommend this book to all of you, especially Southerners.  You can click here to order through Amazon: My Southern Journey.  I promise you many laughs!

Bookends: Harper Lee, A Mockingbird & A Watchman

July 6, 2015~ Bookends

“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God?”
Micah 6:8untitled1Chances are, if you ask ten people if they have heard of the classic To Kill A Mockingbird,  more than likely, all ten will have some knowledge of the Pulitzer Prize winning-best seller written by Harper Lee.  As a young teen who loved to read, I was completely captivated with the compelling novel of racial prejudice in a small Southern city!  With the highly anticipated release of Lee’s new book, “Go Set a Watchman“, I recently spent a few hours in Monroeville, Alabama, Lee’s hometown and the setting of one of the world’s best loved novels!  Katy and I so enjoyed our visit to the Old Courthouse Museum, where the setting of To Kill A Mockingbird really came to life and piqued my interest once again for Lee’s writings.  Go Set A Watchman is set to hit bookstores on July 14!  I hope you will come along as we tour the literary capital of Alabama, my home state!

“People generally see what they look for, and hear what they listen for”
Judge Taylor, To Kill a Mockingbird
The Monroe County Courthouse in Monroeville, Alabama was completed in 1904 and now houses the Old Courthouse Museum.  Harper Lee and her book, To Kill a Mockingbird, brought instant fame to her small Alabama town of Monroeville.  Even though the movie was not filmed in Monroeville, fans of the classic novel come to see the courthouse because it is the most tangible connection to the book’s fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama!  The set designer came to Monroeville to photograph the court room before recreating it on a Hollywood sound stage!  Restored to its 1930’s appearance, the courtroom is the model for Lee’s fictional courtroom settings in To Kill a Mockingbird.  The movie starred Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch.  The film won three academy awards, including Best Actor for Peck, and was nominated for eight, including Best Picture.  The film is widely considered to be one of the greatest ever made.  The American Film Institute named Atticus Finch the greatest movie hero of the 20th century! In 1963, county offices moved to a new building on the square, and the community started looking at preserving the old courthouse with the idea of starting a museum!  A small museum opened in 1968 with a full time museum opening in 1991.  Renovation of the building also began in 1991 at a cost of $2.5 million. The museum houses two permanent exhibits:  Truman Capote:  A Childhood in Monroeville, and Harper Lee:  In Her Own Words.  Harper Lee was born April 28, 1926 in Monroeville.  As a child, she was an unruly tomboy.  She was bored with school.  The character of Scout in To Kill A Mockingbird would have liked her!  In high school, Lee was fortunate to have a gifted English teacher who introduced her to the rigors of writing well.
Lee loved nineteenth century British authors best, and once said that her ambition was to become “the Jane Austen of south Alabama.”  “From childhood on, I did sit in the courtroom watching my father argue cases and talk to juries” (from a 1962 interview).  He once defended two black men accused of murdering a white storekeeper.  Both clients, a father and son, were hanged.  She attended the University of Alabama where she was editor of Rammer Jammer, a quarterly humor magazine on campus. She entered law school but loathed it and decided to pursue a writing career in New York!  She spent eight years working odd jobs before she finally showed a manuscript to an editor at J.B. Lippincott.  At this point, it still resembled a string of stories more than the novel that Lee had intended.  She spent two and a half years rewriting.  To Kill a Mockingbird was published in 1960 to highly favorable reviews and quickly climbed the bestseller lists, where it remained for 88 weeks.  In 1961, the novel won the Pulitzer Prize.  The book has sold over thirty million copies in eighteen languages. Lee was totally unprepared for the amount of personal attention associated with writing a best-seller.  She has led a quiet and guardedly private life. As Sheriff Tate says of Boo Radley, “draggin’ him with his shy ways into the limelight-to me, that’s a sin.”  So it would be with Harper Lee.  From her, To Kill a Mockingbird is gift enough.h20 One of Lee’s closest childhood friends was another writer-to-be, Truman Capote, who came to live with relatives next door to the Lee’s!  It is believed that the character of Dill is based on Capote.  In the decades since Harper Lee published To Kill a Mockingbird, her novel has been shadowed by a persistent rumor.  The speculation has been that Lee’s long time friend Truman Capote either wrote or heavily edited the book.  A letter that Capote wrote his aunt dated July 9, 1959 and made public when placed on display in the Monroe County Museum clearly debunks the idea!  Nelle Harper Lee never married and has continued to live in Monroeville, Alabama. In 1999, To Kill a Mockingbird was voted best novel of the century by the Library Journal.  She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2007.
In February of this year, 55 years after her novel To Kill a Mockingbird was published, it was announced that the 88 year-old (now 89) would publish her second novel, Go Set a Watchman.  The book features her memorable character Scout as an adult and was written prior to the famous To Kill a Mockingbird!  When we left, we drove two blocks down to the site where Lee and Capote were neighbors.  The lot that once held Lee’s home is now “Mel’s Dairy Dream”, a local burger joint.  When we arrived and hopped out to take pictures, a local was curious as to why we were taking pictures–he had no idea the literary history of the ground he was standing on!  It was neat to talk to him about the area and tell him why we were there!   The stone fence, that separated the Lee home and the home that Capote lived in as a child, is all that remains!  Two literary giants lived next to each other as children in the small Southern town of Monroeville, Alabama.  It is quite an amazing story!

In April 1963 in my hometown, our local theater rolled out the red carpet for the two young stars of To Kill a Mockingbird.  The theater hosted a premier of the film based on the novel written by Alabama novelist Harper Lee.  Gadsden native Phillip Alford, who played the role of “Jem” and Mary Badham, who played the role of “Scout” we’re given keys to the city.  Exactly 45 years later, the two actors returned to Gadsden for a screening of the movie!

“The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience”
Atticus Finch, To Kill A Mockingbird

Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of th Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of the year! I am sharing this merry table that was inspired by @april.cornell Victorian Christmas tablecloth! As an April Cornell brand ambassador I received the beautiful tablecloth and lovely Essential blue napkins. The red and white checkered top lends itself to classic casual elegance. The lovely snowy village on the border of the cloth came to life with a couple of snowy wood slice chargers that are topped with tiny little village shops that my beloved Mother gave me many years ago. They hold a special place in my heart. The salad plates depict Christmas Village scenes and complement the cloth. Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morn Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morning Blooms. The theme for the July edition is Summer Living! Living in the country, our summer days are filled with outdoor chores, one of which is gardening! My ‘Little Lamb’ panicled hydrangeas are in full bloom and are the star of my simple table setting! The basket holding the hydrangeas is very sentimental. It belonged to my beloved Mother who kept her journals and devotional books in the basket. I often picked up the books and journals to read while visiting my sweet Daddy. Since my Daddy passed away in March, my brother and I are cleaning out our parents home. I just knew the basket was coming home with me! My precious Mother would have loved seeing it filled with flowers! A vintage tablecloth, @april.cornell ‘Eden’ napkins, Portmeirion ‘Botanic Garden’ dinner plates and stemware from Tuesday Morning (many years ago) complete the table!

I am celebrating the red, white, and blue with a table set in the garden with a couple of treats and sweet iced tea for this hot summer day. Precious memories are attached to the checked tablecloth. My beloved Mother prepared Sunday lunch every week until she passed away. Each Sunday was a feast comparable to Thanksgiving. During the summer months, she often used this checked cloth. More delicious meals than I could count have been served on this cloth!

I decided the table should be simple to allow the hydrangeas to be the star! I always love sharing a ‘special something’ on a table setting that is sentimental and has wonderful memories attached like the majolica pitcher that belonged to my beloved Mother. A beautiful blue and white tablecloth by @april.cornell for @victoriamagazine was a surprise from my sweet husband and also included the ‘blue roses’ tea set which was a part of the limited edition when it was first introduced a few years ago. The Sur La Table floral-patterned earthenware was inspired by London’s Chelsea Flower Show in collaboration with artist, April Cornell. Vintage hobnail milk glass stemware was purchased at the Longest Yard Sale. Sometimes I just enjoy a simple table!

Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

A fluffle of moss bunnies hopped up to the picnic table. A ‘Charming’ tablecloth with Mary Lake-Thompson napkins and Williams Sonoma enchanting ‘Famille Rose’ bunny plates!

I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition of Tea on Tuesdays. My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. As an April Cornell Brand Ambassador, I was gifted these gorgeous linens! I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.

I am serving my favorite, Earl Gray tea, from an Eileen’s Reserve teapot. Teacups by Grace Teaware and vintage Rose Chintz salad plates by Johnson Brothers add more floral patterns to the mix. Japanese Magnolia blooms were cut from my garden and placed in a lilypad teapot!

Mary @ homeiswheretheboatis.net and I welcome Nancy @nance_endless_summer as our special guest! LINK in bio for the blog posts. Have a wonderful day!
