A Georgian Home With A French Twist

July 27, 2015~ Decorating

“A friend loves at all times…”
Proverbs 17:17

Over the last year, I have been able to spend some time with my long-time friend Patti in her beautiful home in Raleigh, NC.  We share so many common interests:  a love for travel, food, antiques, and decorating to name just a few.  Although on each visit, it was cloudy and rainy, we enjoyed time inside her gorgeous home doing a few things that we love: drinking Snickerdandy coffee, arranging tablescapes, and munching on cheese straws and “aggression cookies”.  As an interior decorator, I have been privileged to work with Patti on her classic Georgian home, a beach house, and a mountain retreat.  She is the happiest in rooms of blue and white with a touch of yellow and red!  I think you will agree that her passion for blue is evident!

This is a warm and cozy room for reading or sharing conversation. The gold camelback sofa and side tables are antiques. With many family photos and momentos, this is one of Patti’s favorite rooms!  The rug is an antique Oriental.Lush silk window treatmentsPair of antique French side chairs upholstered in silk with silk striped pillows

The striking red wall color is Benjamin Moore’s Mediterranean Spice.  This is the same as in my dining room–I have never tired of this lipstick red!

Patti loves books, just as I do.  Two bookcases, two stools, and an ottoman hold some of her collection. The blue and white kitchen is a cook ‘s dream-which is very appropriate as Patti is an excellent cook!Schonbek chandeliers with cobalt blue crystals light the blue butterfly granite islandA cobalt blue AGA stove with imported Delft tile backsplash.  One of the selling points of an AGA is that it produces the “perfect fried egg”.  As we were standing in the kitchen, Patti’s husband, Mike, insisted that she fry an egg to show us!  And, indeed, it was the perfect fried egg!  Afterwards, Patti mentioned that having an AGA was a lifelong dream of hers to which Mike responded, “Really?!  That’s funny, because I never knew that!”Detail of the glazed cabinetryPatti selected quotes that were meaningful for randomly placed tilesAn antique cabinet used as a pantry and hand painted by Donna, an artist that I have worked with on dozens of projects!Small wet bar with hammered nickel sink and hand-painted cabinetryBeautiful arched windows with toile swags and Schonbek chandelier lighting the spaceAntique French table and chairs make for an inviting place for morning coffee in the breakfast room!Antique French sofa covered in a linen toile with needlepoint pillows.  Behind the sofa sits an antique table and chairs (barely visible) used for large family gatherings.  This room truly functions as a family room with plenty of seating and a large table for eating.  Also pictured is a desk used for work and to manage the household.  Mike and Patti’s home is a classic Georgian with it’s brick facade and symmetry. The interior furnishings, however, lean towards Patti’s love for French antiques.A skirted round table that I designed with a pair of wing chairs upholstered in a striped linen fabric make for a perfect place to relax or watch TV!To the right of the chair is an outstanding sideboard often used for serving when Patti entertains.  A French landscape complements this vignette.Hand-painted toile scene in the family room3 On my visit in January, I attempted to photograph the master bedroom.  It was a cloudy day and my photos didn’t turn out as well as I hoped!  The bedroom is a sunny shade of yellow!  The iron bed is classic with matelasse coverlet.  The lamps were added while I was visiting and they work perfectly in the space! 4 Small French chair is upholstered in toile.  An antique bench sits at the foot of the bed! 2 Silk plaid window treatments complement the triple window! 1 Velvet sofa makes a comfy spot for reading and watching TV!Cross-stitch that I made in 1981 as a gift to PattiA treasured friendship for forty years!

“True friendship multiplies the good in life and divides its evils.  Strive to have friends, for life without friends is like life on a desert island…to find one real friend in a lifetime is good fortune; to keep her is a blessing”

Butterflies, Birds & Bold Bedding!

July 20, 2015~ Decorating

“In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins”
1 John‬ ‭4‬:‭10

Ever have places that are a “must stop” when you’re shopping? We have an outdoor mall that is my favorite in Birmingham, and I like to go there as often as I can!  Doesn’t a girl love to just look around?!  Last December, while Butch and I were Christmas shopping, we walked into one of my usuals when I am there….Pottery Barn.  It is imperative that I check out the tablescapes and the new products every time I am close to one!  As I was perusing the store, I couldn’t help but notice their new and oh-so-colorful summer bedding!  Changing out the bedding seasonally is not something I normally do, but this was a fun tropical pattern with turquoise, rust, and golds…absolutely perfect for our master bedroom!  So, when late spring came along, so did the new bedding! One thing I love about the colors is that they are appropriate for spring and summer! The pattern is called Fauna and it definitely adds a bit of whimsy!  You all know how much I love color…the birds and butterflies are alive in beautiful bright hues! You can see that my walls are peacock blue/turquoise – so the pattern is perfect! I have always loved pillows but as I have gotten older I don’t enjoy putting them on and taking them off nearly as much! This bedding is just fun, and not so serious! As an interior decorator (now retired) I had the best workroom and fabricator that designed and made this silk pillow.  It is a braiding technique and it is unique! You know that in the South we are fond of monograms, so it was a must for the bed!  I often used monogrammed pillows for clients!
The bedding complements my eclectic Schonbek lamps! I unfolded the duvet to show more of its pattern!  A matelasse coverlet always covers the bed! A view through the iron footboard! Thank you for taking time out of your everyday living to visit with us!  We enjoy all of your comments!

Here Comes The Sun(flowers)!

July 9, 2015~ Decorating, Outdoors

“He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end”
Ecclesiastes 3:11

There is something about sunflowers that just make me smile!  Maybe it’s the way their brightness represents the sun.  Or it could be that when I look at one, it’s as if I see it smiling back at me! Or maybe it’s the way the vibrant yellow contrasts with the beautiful blue skies.  Or maybe a combination of all three!  Whatever it is, sunflowers bring a little joy and “happy” to my day!

As a young bride, I will never forget seeing a bedroom in a friend’s home that was decorated in a sunflower theme.  The comforter, window treatments, artwork were all dressed in sunflowers.  The room just oozed happy!!  And now, as years have gone by, sunflowers are still my flower of choice from the grocery store to make a happy bouquet for the kitchen or dining room table.

Butch and I have talked many times about planting  sunflowers…after all, we have almost 15 acres of land!  Last July, while visiting the Texas Hill Country, we stopped at a remarkable wild seed farm outside of Fredericksburg (www.wildseedfarms.com).  We could have spent the entire day at this real working wildflower farm and its lovely shops!  Fields of wild flowers were ablaze with color…and of course, our eyes were caught by a sea of the most gorgeous sunflowers!  That’s when we knew that these beauties had to be planted here at our home in Northeast Alabama! So, with expert help from their staff, we selected one pound of Grey Stripe Sunflower seed! Now, we tend to buy things and put them away, never able to find them again.  But I made sure that didn’t happen to our seeds…I placed the seeds in plain view as I open my pantry door to serve as a reminder!  So when the warmer weather rolled in, Butch prepared a little plot to plant the seeds!  And now we have our very own sunflower patch to enjoy and to share with you, our readers!  Maybe it will add a little “happy” to your day as it does mine, each time I look out my kitchen window!

Sunflowers attract good bugs!  The big round landing pad packed with pollen is yelling, “Eat here”! Our first sign of a bloom!  Allison, our daughter-in-love, chose sunflowers as her primary flower for their wedding!  You can see more here: The Wedding Edition. Katy, our chosen daughter, cut sunflowers from our patch to add more color to the porch of her new house!  The red door and bistro set are just too fun!  Stay tuned as we decorate her home!
Birthing of a bloom!! A bucket full of beauty!! Our Grey Stripe sunflowers are considered a giant among sunflowers!  They can reach 12 feet in height and produce 10″ – 12″ flowers! Allie’s bridal bouquet! Sunflowers, of course, thrive in full sun. The Grey Stripe variety is drought tolerant and makes plump tasty seeds!A recent Tablescape Tuesday with happy sunflowers as the centerpiece!  You can see it here: Sunflowers & Summer.
Sweet sunflower arrangement awaiting Allison and her bridesmaids in the carriage house! Our Grey Stripes are easy to grow and are not fussy about soil!  Their seeds invite birds. The eating area in our garden provides us with a bird’s eye view! Pasture view of our happy patch! Allie’s bridesmaids’ bouquets! The sunflower is an important source of food.  Sunflower oil is a valued and healthy oil and sunflower seeds are a nutritious and tasty snack! Sunflower varieties!  Sunflowers belong to the genus Helianthus, which contains over 80 different species! Ah…red barn and sunflowers!5826db22df452296989669abe1c1cb42 A field near San Gimignano in Tuscany Sunflower loveliness in vintage tea canisters!tumblr_nciifokbOB1shc9bto1_500A field of sunflowers…bliss!  A basketful of sunshine! A creative display! Harvesting and drying sunflower seeds!spring-centerpieces-happy-party-theme-for-new-year-wedding-ideas-5 Sunflowers mix so well with other flowers

Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of th Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of the year! I am sharing this merry table that was inspired by @april.cornell Victorian Christmas tablecloth! As an April Cornell brand ambassador I received the beautiful tablecloth and lovely Essential blue napkins. The red and white checkered top lends itself to classic casual elegance. The lovely snowy village on the border of the cloth came to life with a couple of snowy wood slice chargers that are topped with tiny little village shops that my beloved Mother gave me many years ago. They hold a special place in my heart. The salad plates depict Christmas Village scenes and complement the cloth. An easy centerpiece of fresh fruit is nestled atop fresh greens and placed in a Natale bowl by @arteitalicacrownlinen I have joined 17 table stylists for a Christmas Tablescape Blog Hop. Happy September and meteorological fall! “Breaking Happy September and meteorological fall! “Breaking free from the grips of a lingering summer, and gaining freedom to embrace an anxious autumn, requires a September.” ~Butch Richardson

Autumn is my favorite season and my favorite time to set tables in my garden! I am sharing two tablescapes using the same @aprilcornell ‘Meridian’ tablecloth (one of my favorites) and faux leather chargers, but changing the other elements on the table! It is so easy to change a few things and have a different look!

Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morn Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morning Blooms. The theme for the July edition is Summer Living! Living in the country, our summer days are filled with outdoor chores, one of which is gardening! My ‘Little Lamb’ panicled hydrangeas are in full bloom and are the star of my simple table setting! The basket holding the hydrangeas is very sentimental. It belonged to my beloved Mother who kept her journals and devotional books in the basket. I often picked up the books and journals to read while visiting my sweet Daddy. Since my Daddy passed away in March, my brother and I are cleaning out our parents home. I just knew the basket was coming home with me! My precious Mother would have loved seeing it filled with flowers! A vintage tablecloth, @april.cornell ‘Eden’ napkins, Portmeirion ‘Botanic Garden’ dinner plates and stemware from Tuesday Morning (many years ago) complete the table!

Happy July! 2025 is half over, and where did it go Happy July! 2025 is half over, and where did it go? I am celebrating the red, white, and blue with a table set in the garden with a couple of treats and sweet iced tea for this hot summer day. Precious memories are attached to the checked tablecloth. My beloved Mother prepared Sunday lunch every week until she passed away. Each Sunday was a feast comparable to Thanksgiving. During the summer months, she often used this checked cloth. More delicious meals than I could count have been served on this cloth!

Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer table is in my garden. I decided the table should be simple to allow the hydrangeas to be the star! I always love sharing a ‘special something’ on a table setting that is sentimental and has wonderful memories attached like the majolica pitcher that belonged to my beloved Mother. A beautiful blue and white tablecloth by @april.cornell for @victoriamagazine was a surprise from my sweet husband and also included the ‘blue roses’ tea set which was a part of the limited edition when it was first introduced a few years ago. The Sur La Table floral-patterned earthenware was inspired by London’s Chelsea Flower Show in collaboration with artist, April Cornell. Vintage hobnail milk glass stemware was purchased at the Longest Yard Sale. Sometimes I just enjoy a simple table!

I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bodily resurrection enables all those who choose to follow Him to have assured victory over our greatest enemy…death!

I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition of Tea on Tuesdays. My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. As an April Cornell Brand Ambassador, I was gifted these gorgeous linens! I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.

I am serving my favorite, Earl Gray tea, from an Eileen’s Reserve teapot. Teacups by Grace Teaware and vintage Rose Chintz salad plates by Johnson Brothers add more floral patterns to the mix. Japanese Magnolia blooms were cut from my garden and placed in a lilypad teapot!
