Joyeux Noel!

December 23, 2014~ Decorating

“Majesty in the midst of the mundane.  Holiness in the filth of sheep manure and sweat. Divinity entering the world on the floor of a stable, through the womb of a teenager and in the presence of a carpenter.
She touches the face of the infant-God.  How long was your journey!
This baby had overlooked the universe.  These rags keeping him warm were the robes of eternity.  His golden throne room had been abandoned in favor of a dirty sheep pen.  And worshiping angels had been replaced with kind but bewildered shepherds.
Meanwhile, the city hums.  The merchants are unaware that God has visited their planet.  The innkeeper would never believe that he had just sent God into the cold.  And the people would scoff at anyone who told them the Messiah lay in the arms of a teenager on the outskirts of their village.  They were all too busy to consider the possibility.
Those who missed His Majesty’s arrival that night missed it not because of evil acts or malice; no, they missed it because they simply weren’t looking.
Little has changed in the last two thousand years, has it?”

Christmas is upon us!  In the following days, we will all be with our families and friends to celebrate the birth of Jesus!  Hopefully you are finished with your Christmas shopping and baking and all loose ends are tied so that you can truly enjoy!  I love all things Christmas, but soon it will be time to box up the nutcrackers and take down the trees-but isn’t it fun while it lasts?!  I shared a final Christmas tablescape yesterday, and today I want to share with you all my favorite pins from my Christmas Pinterest board, Joyeux Noel.  You can click on each picture to go to the original source!

Let Our Hearts Prepare Him Room

December 18, 2014~ Decorating

“Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room
And heaven and nature sing

He rules the world with truth and grace
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness
And wonders of His love”
-Joy to the World

As a new blogger, I have enjoyed the Christmas season with all the beautiful images from my new blogging friends.  Their blogs certainly provide plenty of inspiration.  I am sure that if you have been following our blog, by now you know that I love color.  And with that said, I never shy away from mixing colors that might not typically be seen together.  Today I am showing just a little of our master bedroom.  During our almost thirty six years of living in our home our bedroom has worn many different colors on its walls and fabrics.  But, I have enjoyed this color scheme and have yet to tire of it.  Traditional Christmas colors of red and gold play beautifully with the turquoise walls and silk window treatments.

As we continue to share our home, you will see more of my personal decorating style, and like I said before, lots of color!  But it is our heart’s desire that your eyes see much more than what is visible.  Our desire is that our home be a safe haven for our family and friends, that love and encouragement is abundant, but above all-a place where Christ is exalted.

As we have prepared our home for this season, may we also prepare room in our hearts for the coming of the King!

Just a few touches of Christmas in the master bedroom!

This is a large Santa made by my Mother!  You can see more here:  Glad Tidings: Kitchen Tour

Besides the beautifully hand-crafted Santa, there is a sleigh with ornaments and fresh magnolia from our yard

This small table sits between a pair of Maitland Smith chairs that I bought at a real bargain!

The ornaments are shades of turquoise, green, and blue

Flocked and lighted garland with needlepoint stockings that are definitely vintage– bought shortly after we moved into our home!

This one belongs to Butch…

…and this one is mine!

A small pillow for a warm Season’s Greeting

This photo shows the beautiful Schonbek chandelier ( and by now, we all know I love a chandelier!), original Togolese art that we purchased on our trip in 2011,  and faux tortoise crown molding!

Bedside table with its holiday finery…pillar candle with a ring of glitzy greenery and ornaments and framed art!

The bust is displaying a beautiful necklace that Butch gave me.

The painting of a cafe in Montmartre was found in Paris-one of my favorite cities!

The star overlooks the Baby in the manger.  Love this original art work from Montana!

A Nutcracker Welcome

December 15, 2014~ Decorating

“For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace”
Isaiah 9:6

Once again, we invite you to our kitchen porch.  It was first seen here:  In Awe of Autumn.  We occasionally add a new decoration or a new wrinkle to an old standard when preparing for Christmas. Most of us do change out a few things from time to time. Wear and tear gets it’s way and replacements must be found. But, there are those traditions, objects, displays, and items that we hang onto as long as possible. These “old ways” help keep memories alive! It’s amazing too, how each year bringing out the old also stirs our hearts with new thoughts and a fresh awareness of things to come. Yes, Christmas is a celebration of a “one of a kind” past event, but at the same time it is a declaration of a glorious event yet to come. So, doing it like we’ve done it for years is great for both memories and future hopes. In the words of a George Strait song….”So leave the world behind you, let the spirit find you, and have an old time Christmas for old times sake”

The large nutcrackers have welcomed guests to our kitchen porch for many years!

o1

Believe it or not, we bought these wooden nutcrackers at Wal-Mart

o2

We love their bright and festive colors, and they stand almost five feet tall!

o3

Butch always cuts fresh pine for our door.  It smells like Christmas when you walk up the steps!

o6

A simple wreath is all that is needed!

o4

We have to be careful when choosing a door mat, Oreo is very finicky!  I think he approves!

o5

Candle lanterns light the steps at night!

o8

It is almost dark and the candles are burning as Christmas music plays outside when guests arrive!

o9

Photo bombed by Oreo!

This is a detached garage which is often confused for a guest house.  We have talked about converting it for guests or an office for Butch.  But, where would all of his junk be stored if we made that decision?!  Butch built this building at least twenty five years ago.  For most of those twenty five years, we have decorated its front door and windows for Christmas!  Santa was made by my friend, Delilah so very long ago!

FullSizeRender (13)

On our first trip to Colonial Williamsburg in the late 1970’s, we saw their beautiful fruit fans over the doorways.  Southern Living magazine (I am a long-time subscriber), a few years later gave instructions on how to make the fan.  And ever since, Butch has made this beautiful apple fan with a pineapple for its center as a symbol of hospitality!

Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of th Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of the year! I am sharing this merry table that was inspired by @april.cornell Victorian Christmas tablecloth! As an April Cornell brand ambassador I received the beautiful tablecloth and lovely Essential blue napkins. The red and white checkered top lends itself to classic casual elegance. The lovely snowy village on the border of the cloth came to life with a couple of snowy wood slice chargers that are topped with tiny little village shops that my beloved Mother gave me many years ago. They hold a special place in my heart. The salad plates depict Christmas Village scenes and complement the cloth. An easy centerpiece of fresh fruit is nestled atop fresh greens and placed in a Natale bowl by @arteitalicacrownlinen I have joined 17 table stylists for a Christmas Tablescape Blog Hop. Happy September and meteorological fall! “Breaking Happy September and meteorological fall! “Breaking free from the grips of a lingering summer, and gaining freedom to embrace an anxious autumn, requires a September.” ~Butch Richardson

Autumn is my favorite season and my favorite time to set tables in my garden! I am sharing two tablescapes using the same @aprilcornell ‘Meridian’ tablecloth (one of my favorites) and faux leather chargers, but changing the other elements on the table! It is so easy to change a few things and have a different look!

Table 1 photos 1-5 Meridian tablecloth, Spode ‘woodland’ dishware, quilted floral placemats, MacKenzie-Childs Flower Market vase with dahlias, chaste tree blooms, plus autumn fire sedum, and acrylic tortoise flatware.

Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morn Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morning Blooms. The theme for the July edition is Summer Living! Living in the country, our summer days are filled with outdoor chores, one of which is gardening! My ‘Little Lamb’ panicled hydrangeas are in full bloom and are the star of my simple table setting! The basket holding the hydrangeas is very sentimental. It belonged to my beloved Mother who kept her journals and devotional books in the basket. I often picked up the books and journals to read while visiting my sweet Daddy. Since my Daddy passed away in March, my brother and I are cleaning out our parents home. I just knew the basket was coming home with me! My precious Mother would have loved seeing it filled with flowers! A vintage tablecloth, @april.cornell ‘Eden’ napkins, Portmeirion ‘Botanic Garden’ dinner plates and stemware from Tuesday Morning (many years ago) complete the table!

Happy July! 2025 is half over, and where did it go Happy July! 2025 is half over, and where did it go? I am celebrating the red, white, and blue with a table set in the garden with a couple of treats and sweet iced tea for this hot summer day. Precious memories are attached to the checked tablecloth. My beloved Mother prepared Sunday lunch every week until she passed away. Each Sunday was a feast comparable to Thanksgiving. During the summer months, she often used this checked cloth. More delicious meals than I could count have been served on this cloth!

Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer table is in my garden. I decided the table should be simple to allow the hydrangeas to be the star! I always love sharing a ‘special something’ on a table setting that is sentimental and has wonderful memories attached like the majolica pitcher that belonged to my beloved Mother. A beautiful blue and white tablecloth by @april.cornell for @victoriamagazine was a surprise from my sweet husband and also included the ‘blue roses’ tea set which was a part of the limited edition when it was first introduced a few years ago. The Sur La Table floral-patterned earthenware was inspired by London’s Chelsea Flower Show in collaboration with artist, April Cornell. Vintage hobnail milk glass stemware was purchased at the Longest Yard Sale. Sometimes I just enjoy a simple table!

The table is enhanced by views toward the mountain, woodlands, and the large Snowball Viburnum. The verdant rye grass appears as a green carpet that has been spread for Easter! Vintage Fitz and Floyd ‘Herb Garden’ teapots, sugar and creamer, and oval tray are suited for springtime with their embossed bows, vegetables, and words. A bouquet of Kwanzan Cherry blossoms add more spring color to the setting.

I am serving a simple teatime with Earl Grey tea, savory egg salad filled phyllo cups, and sweet vanilla cupcakes with cream cheese icing, and macarons! A favorite cottage rose tablecloth and Essential napkins are by April Cornell.

Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our woodlands and this is the first one of the season, an Easter/Spring table! I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bodily resurrection enables all those who choose to follow Him to have assured victory over our greatest enemy…death!

I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

A fluffle of moss bunnies hopped up to the picnic table. A ‘Charming’ tablecloth with Mary Lake-Thompson napkins and Williams Sonoma enchanting ‘Famille Rose’ bunny plates!

I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition of Tea on Tuesdays. My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. As an April Cornell Brand Ambassador, I was gifted these gorgeous linens! I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.

I am serving my favorite, Earl Gray tea, from an Eileen’s Reserve teapot. Teacups by Grace Teaware and vintage Rose Chintz salad plates by Johnson Brothers add more floral patterns to the mix. Japanese Magnolia blooms were cut from my garden and placed in a lilypad teapot!
