Roadtrippin’ and Tablescapin’

October 30, 2014~ Decorating, Food & Entertaining

“Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
and his courts with praise!
Give thanks to him; bless his name!”
Psalm 100:4

Today is my ?? birthday!!

I am in awe of the mystery of mercy that my Heavenly Father has given me another year, another day, another breath.  I have already been celebrating  my birthday week with some great friends!   Tune in on Monday’s blog to find out how we celebrated the day.  If you remember, last week  I shared a partial tour of Patti’s home here: Everyday Living at Patti’s.   Today, I am sharing a Tablescape that I put together in less than twenty minutes while we were visiting. Patti has more china, silver, and crystal than Belk!  She has loved collecting through the years and her collection is quite stunning.  Also, stay tuned in the coming months for more from Patti’s house!

Patti’s French table in her breakfast room is set for an informal Thanksgiving lunch!

This setting is simple compared to most of my tablescapes, but simply elegant in my estimation!  I used faux garland that Patti had and mixed with real and faux pumpkins!

Yellow quilted placemats were used to bring out the color in the Spode turkey dinner plates

The sterling silver is the “Prelude” pattern by International and belonged to Patti’s Mother. This pattern was introduced in 1939 and still remains in the top ten most popular sterling patterns- a true classic!

Such a sweet story behind this ceramic soup tureen.  It was made by my Mother and given to Patti in the late 1970’s.  Patti and I both love having these beautiful treasures made by my Mother’s very own hands!

The coffee mugs are also by Spode in the “Festival” pattern

Gorgeous cobalt blue wine glasses were a gift to Patti by her friend, DeVota.  We love those kind of friends!!

Don’t you just love the cobalt stemware and how they play into the “wow” factor of the crystal chandelier?!

Thank you for reading and for being a part of our everyday living!  And thank you, this week, for being a part of Patti’s everyday living!
We always love your comments!!
Blessings,
Butch & Pam

Tablescape Tuesday: Dining Out

October 28, 2014~ Food & Entertaining, Outdoors, Tablescape Tuesday

“Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness”
Psalm 29:2

Welcome to our picnic edition of Tablescape Tuesday!  In the Appalachian foothills of northeast Alabama, there is one thing very predictable: our weather is unpredictable!  Sunday was unusually warm and glorious, so we decided to take advantage of one more opportunity to eat outdoors before it turns too cold.  Having shared our traditional after church lunch with family, we decided on a light picnic of fruit and cheese.  I share a fondness of alfresco dining with the French and Italians!  You can see a few alfresco tablescapes that I have done here:

Breakfast Alfresco!
Summer’s Happy Ending
Reservations for Two Under the Arbor

And who knows…with our unpredictable weather we may have Christmas Dinner outdoors!

“I cannot endure to waste anything as precious as autumnal sunshine by staying in the house.” -Nathaniel Hawthorne

The tray is an antique oak bed tray that I have had for years and it’s legs are folded down for our picnic.  I bought the quilt at a fundraising auction for Seth’s school quite a few years ago.

The basket holds a special memory.  Seth called one morning and said, “I need a picnic basket.”  I located one in Birmingham.  Later that week, he took the lovely Allison to Little River Canyon with the picnic basket full of goodies. He set up a video camera on a beautiful outcropping of rocks and got down on one knee and popped the question!  You can see wedding photos here: Tablescape Tuesday: The Wedding Edition and  The Wedding Edition Part Two. The lantern, along with three more is always found on the steps of our kitchen porch at Christmas.

Butch’s Taylor guitar that he makes the most beautiful music on!

The late afternoon sunlight cast a pretty light on our little picnic!

Cute sugar cookies from the bakery–and delicious, I might add!

I have enjoyed using the dome stands that I ordered from a catalog??  They fit beautifully in tablescapes!

The last of the season’s zinnias!

A plate of pears showing off their autumnal beauty!

We went casual for our picnic for two–this is how everyday living looks!

A few favorite things:  leopard throw, coffee table book by Betty Lou Phillips, and the needlepoint deer pillow!  A closer look and you can see the mother of pearl dessert knives that I found last week at a bargain!

Had to include this cool pic of the bicycle’s spokes reflected on Butch’s guitar

My favorite singer of all time.  So enjoyed his little mini-concert of some of our favorite John Denver songs!

Katy’s Nana gave me the cute  3-wheel bicycle.  You may see more of it!

People in the South (us included) love old fashioned hoop cheese!

Last year, Butch and I celebrated our fortieth anniversary and Seth gifted us with an afternoon of outdoor photos on our   “piece of heaven in the foothills of the Appalachians”.  This pic was taken where we shared our picnic!

As always, a warm thank you for sharing our everyday living!

Blessings,
Butch and Pam

Tablescape Tuesday: Bon Voyage to Bon Appetit!

October 20, 2014~ Food & Entertaining, Tablescape Tuesday, Travel

“This God—his way is perfect; the word of the LORD proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him”
Psalm 18:30

Bonjour y’all!

The South of France is another favorite place of mine to visit.  Butch and I were able to spend some time there in 2010 and get a glimpse into their everyday living–and what a feast for the senses!  The beautiful color palette of the houses, purple fields of lavender, bathed in the famous light that artists like Cezanne and Van Gogh used to paint their masterpieces. The sounds of the market and families’ laughter as they dine leisurely outside.  Your taste buds will appreciate the fruitiness of the olive oil, the crustiness of a French baguette, and sweetness of sun-ripened figs. The pungent smell of rosemary and the enticing smell of freshly baked brioche and croissants wafting from the local boulangerie fill the air.  And the atmosphere is one that can never be recreated, although in today’s post I have made my best attempt!

Looking out over the tiled roof onto a picturesque Provençal mas

The village of Eze with its narrow streets and passageways!

On today’s Tablescape Tuesday, we are mixing a little travel with a little tablescape.  The South of France encompasses The French Riviera and Provence.  This area is made up of quaint villages and large cities like Nice and Marseille.  Among all of the villages that we visited while we were there, two of the most colorful were Eze and Roussillion.  Their colors range from yellow and orange to a beautiful red! The medieval village of Eze on the French Riviera is famous for the view of the sea from its hill top, and the village of Roussillon is situated in the heart of the biggest ochre deposit in Europe.

Just as Provence is a feast for the senses, so is our beloved South.  Living in Our South is so similar to the South of France!  Our area is known for a slower pace of living, fabulous farm to table food, and views of rivers and mountains with colors of gold, orange, and red during autumn.

This is also my first Everyday Living Link Party!  I am excited to see what you all share.  Scroll all the way to the bottom for details!

The kitchen island is the center of our kitchen.  It serves as a prepping station, buffet for entertaining, and casual dining space.  I used the colors of Provence for Tablescape Tuesday!

My inspiration for this tablescape is the tablecloth that I bought in Sete, France!  Sete is a port and seaside resort on the Mediterranean, often referred to as the Venice of France.

I used goldenrods (which are plentiful in the South) as the centerpiece.  Their bright gold color lends itself to Provence!

Vietri leaf  bowl with autumnal finds from The Paris Market in Savannah!

The dark blue Gorham (I think) stemware was a gift from Butch and they frequent my tables in every season!

I used fragrant rosemary from my herb garden in a couple of antique flasks (also found at The French Market) and cobalt mini vases. Rosemary thrives in our South!

Each place setting is anchored with rattan chargers with the creamy white dinner plates often seen on my tablescapes.

The salad plates are Provençal colors with a rooster in the center, a gift from Seth!

This large rooster occupies a place of honor on the island!  The Gallic rooster has become a hallmark of French country design.

Autumn in the South always involves pumpkins!  The gold candle is nestled in popcorn.

Gold napkins, first seen here on “Tablescape Tuesday: The Wedding Edition“, folded in a Fleur de lis!

The bar stools are from Horchow.  I will enjoy the colors of Provence and Our South all week!

Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of th Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of the year! I am sharing this merry table that was inspired by @april.cornell Victorian Christmas tablecloth! As an April Cornell brand ambassador I received the beautiful tablecloth and lovely Essential blue napkins. The red and white checkered top lends itself to classic casual elegance. The lovely snowy village on the border of the cloth came to life with a couple of snowy wood slice chargers that are topped with tiny little village shops that my beloved Mother gave me many years ago. They hold a special place in my heart. The salad plates depict Christmas Village scenes and complement the cloth. An easy centerpiece of fresh fruit is nestled atop fresh greens and placed in a Natale bowl by @arteitalicacrownlinen I have joined 17 table stylists for a Christmas Tablescape Blog Hop. Autumn is my favorite season and my favorite time to set tables in my garden! I am sharing two tablescapes using the same @aprilcornell ‘Meridian’ tablecloth (one of my favorites) and faux leather chargers, but changing the other elements on the table! It is so easy to change a few things and have a different look!

Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morn Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morning Blooms. The theme for the July edition is Summer Living! Living in the country, our summer days are filled with outdoor chores, one of which is gardening! My ‘Little Lamb’ panicled hydrangeas are in full bloom and are the star of my simple table setting! The basket holding the hydrangeas is very sentimental. It belonged to my beloved Mother who kept her journals and devotional books in the basket. I often picked up the books and journals to read while visiting my sweet Daddy. Since my Daddy passed away in March, my brother and I are cleaning out our parents home. I just knew the basket was coming home with me! My precious Mother would have loved seeing it filled with flowers! A vintage tablecloth, @april.cornell ‘Eden’ napkins, Portmeirion ‘Botanic Garden’ dinner plates and stemware from Tuesday Morning (many years ago) complete the table!

Happy July! 2025 is half over, and where did it go Happy July! 2025 is half over, and where did it go? I am celebrating the red, white, and blue with a table set in the garden with a couple of treats and sweet iced tea for this hot summer day. Precious memories are attached to the checked tablecloth. My beloved Mother prepared Sunday lunch every week until she passed away. Each Sunday was a feast comparable to Thanksgiving. During the summer months, she often used this checked cloth. More delicious meals than I could count have been served on this cloth!

Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer table is in my garden. I decided the table should be simple to allow the hydrangeas to be the star! I always love sharing a ‘special something’ on a table setting that is sentimental and has wonderful memories attached like the majolica pitcher that belonged to my beloved Mother. A beautiful blue and white tablecloth by @april.cornell for @victoriamagazine was a surprise from my sweet husband and also included the ‘blue roses’ tea set which was a part of the limited edition when it was first introduced a few years ago. The Sur La Table floral-patterned earthenware was inspired by London’s Chelsea Flower Show in collaboration with artist, April Cornell. Vintage hobnail milk glass stemware was purchased at the Longest Yard Sale. Sometimes I just enjoy a simple table!

The table is enhanced by views toward the mountain, woodlands, and the large Snowball Viburnum. The verdant rye grass appears as a green carpet that has been spread for Easter! Vintage Fitz and Floyd ‘Herb Garden’ teapots, sugar and creamer, and oval tray are suited for springtime with their embossed bows, vegetables, and words. A bouquet of Kwanzan Cherry blossoms add more spring color to the setting.

I am serving a simple teatime with Earl Grey tea, savory egg salad filled phyllo cups, and sweet vanilla cupcakes with cream cheese icing, and macarons! A favorite cottage rose tablecloth and Essential napkins are by April Cornell.

We are most blessed to celebrate the resurrection of Christ, being the source of new life, yet new life that is eternal. Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our woodlands and this is the first one of the season, an Easter/Spring table! I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bodily resurrection enables all those who choose to follow Him to have assured victory over our greatest enemy…death!

I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition of Tea on Tuesdays. My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. As an April Cornell Brand Ambassador, I was gifted these gorgeous linens! I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.

I am serving my favorite, Earl Gray tea, from an Eileen’s Reserve teapot. Teacups by Grace Teaware and vintage Rose Chintz salad plates by Johnson Brothers add more floral patterns to the mix. Japanese Magnolia blooms were cut from my garden and placed in a lilypad teapot!
