 Remember my friend, Patti?  I have introduced her to you on many occasions as I have shared her lovely home and several tablescapes!  We have enjoyed a forty-one year friendship and along with that, many wonderful memories!  It is so much fun to go to Patti’s and “play” with all of her “stuff”!  I consider her the “queen of china, silver, and crystal!”  I would love to know how many complete sets of each that she owns!  Maybe she will count and I can report that one day.  I hope you enjoy this autumn inspired setting using an unexpected pop of color and china designed especially for a Duke!!


Patti and I set a simple tablescape with autumn in mind!  Every Thanksgiving, Patti and Mike have over fifty family members for a sit down dinner which includes several tables all set with china, sterling silver, and crystal!  (Makes me tired just thinking of that!)


This extraordinary china pattern by Mottahedeh, featuring twenty colors and 22K gold, incorporates colorful fruit and imaginary insects within a rim of green enamel and gold flecking!  The dinner service was originally made for William Henry, Duke of Gloucester, circa 1770.


We layered two placemats, a white linen topped with a quilted gold one!


The butter pat plates with no marking, were designed for holding individual servings of butter!  These were used during the height of the Victorian era when ornate elegance dictated that every place setting at the dining table consist of several dishes for different foods.  Collectors love butter pats, but they are often mistaken for pieces from children’s set.


The cobalt wine stemware was gifted to Patti from a friend!  The cobalt color blends perfectly with the painted millwork!


The centerpiece consists of Gala apples and a pineapple, which is a symbol of hospitality, in a simple white porcelain bowl!


We used cobalt napkins with brass napkin rings!  I love the bold color and the fact that Patti never shies away from following her heart and not the latest trends!


Patti is a fabulous cook, so who wouldn’t enjoy dining in this sunny spot?


The picture on the left was taken in 1981 (we were so young!) when I gave Patti a going-away party, as she was re-locating to North Carolina.  The photo on the right was taken in January of this year at her beautiful home!  Hairstyles have changed a little over the years!

It’s almost like we hit the month of September and autumn just came right on in!  The past three days have been picture perfect with clear blue skies and cooler temperatures here in Northeast Alabama!  Of course, we have been outside taking in these most perfect temps…why stay indoors when you can walk out to near perfect weather?!  As promised more alfresco dinners!


 With the days getting shorter, the table in our garden becomes shaded by five o’clock!

 
Our Father has provided a colorful world for our enjoyment!  Autumn brings so many rich colors, so I join in the celebration with a color-filled table setting!

 
I was searching through a linen closet last week and happened to see this patchwork tablecloth.  It brings back so many blessed memories of my Mother.  I am guessing she made this for me 38 years ago and it became the inspiration for the table!  The colors are ideal for autumn!

With cooler temperatures, soup was on the menu!

 
The gorgeous light that autumn brings to our Appalachian foothills never fails to impress me!


 The stack includes white charger, mossy green dinner plate, and soup bowl with a fruit rim!

 
The shadows in the stemware made an interesting photo!

 
A pair of etched vases with burnt red stems add more color!

 
Rust colored napkins add a pop of solid to the patchwork cloth!

You can probably tell by now that one of our favorite ways to dine at home is outdoors.  Anytime the weather permits,  you can usually find us outside at dinner time!  Saturday evening was cooler, so I carted everything out to the garden so we could enjoy God’s creation and His lovely sunset!  With the promise of cooler temperatures, so is the promise of more outdoor tablescapes!  Hope you won’t mind!   As autumn approaches, the sunlight changes, it reminds me of the light often spoken about by artists!   The inspiration for this setting in the garden is the olive tablecloth and plates with olives, tomatoes, artichokes, and eggplants!  I use olive oil for cooking, especially roasting  vegetables…and is there anything better than good focaccia with olive oil?  The rattan chargers add texture and the use of patterns and colors give the setting a casual look!  I incorporated olive oil and olives as part of the centerpiece. We usually have a bottle of olive oil on our table.  Butch says,  “olive oil makes everything taste better!”  The napkins are folded in a fleur de lis with the flatware tucked inside!  I found the dinner and salad plates reduced and waited for them to be reduced again!  Don’t we all love a good bargain?     Hearts on fire mixed with grasses from the garden give an autumnal feel!  The hand-painted pitcher with a Tuscan farmhouse and cypress trees and the jar with olives were purchased in San Gimignano!         Oreo, my photo bomber, always joins us for alfresco meals!    “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver”
