“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart”
Jeremiah‬ ‭29‬:‭11-13‬

Wishing each and everyone a Happy New Year!

After declaring I would not, I finally did it-I joined Instagram last January!  And much to my surprise,  I have actually enjoyed this form of social media.  But the real unbelievable news is that Butch joined Instagram after we started blogging!  He does not do Facebook and had often stated he would not be involved in any social media-but the blog was the game changer!!   I am still learning that oftentimes what we say we will never do, we end up doing!  I know that many of my friends are not on Instagram, so I decided that I would share some of my images that have not been used on the blog previously.  As I began to write the captions, I realized the photos that I had chosen had something in common.  Flowers…food…reading…coffee…all things that I love and are all a part of our everyday living!

The Not So Underdog

October 27, 2014~ Music

I’m thinking this post needs a preface. The title may seem strange for a writing which I hope will shed light on a sincere friendship, and cast a reflection on days gone by.

I have always had a tendency to gravitate to the camp of anyone I perceived to be the underdog in a situation or circumstance.  It’s my nature–and maybe it’s yours as well. You know; a team, a group, or a person that seemingly has a disadvantage, but not of their own making.

With that said, I will introduce you to a guy whose friendship was established back in the 60’s high school days.

Meet Bill Briand!

Common interest brings people together, and music, as much as anything, put Bill and me on the same “playing” field. But without the above mentioned tendency of mine, I may have never discovered his music or gained Bill as a life-long friend.

Here’s the deal. I grew up in rural northeast Alabama. Southern, good ole boys, mostly Protestant or nothing at all, where everybody knows everybody and/or they are related. It’s mid 1960’s. Bill’s family moves here, less than a mile from our house. Bill is Catholic and was born in Massachusetts. Do you get the picture? It’s a classic underdog situation, or so I thought. I determine to take this guy in and see what he is all about.

What did I find? A wonderful, very genuine person who laughed a lot. He was not only “the life of the party”, he was “the life of  every occasion”. No pretense, Bill was just who he was and he was that way all the time–his steadfast manner of everyday living.  Bill was outgoing, smart, and had an incredible ear for music. We played songs for hours in the Briand family den- me singing and playing guitar and Bill on keys. He could figure out any song!

A Stunt Night take off on The Lawrence Welk show. For those who may not know, Lawrence Welk and his orchestra had a long running weekly TV program. I am in the foreground. The accordion Bill is holding is not just a prop. It was his, and he could play it every bit as good as a guy who played one weekly with Mr. Welk!Bill with the Turkeytown Oscar

Bill and I had a post-high school plan. We would study engineering at Auburn, sharing an apartment. Life doesn’t always go as planned–there are often roadblocks that cause detours. I came to a quick realization that attending Auburn was expensive! Bill stayed and did well at Auburn and followed with a successful career. I came home and graduated from JSU.

The “not so” underdog probably didn’t need my help in settling in and finding his way but he never forgot my immediate acceptance of him. He told me dozens of times in various ways through the years. Most of us were not so thoughtful. Teenage guys were too busy to mail a friend a Christmas Card.

Bill and I kept in touch through the years. I’m terrible with remembering birthdays but I never forgot his. March 15. The “Ides of March”. Remember Julius Caesar? I would always contact Bill on his birthday. We talked in February, 2008, and made plans to get together for lunch, maybe around his birthday or soon after. I had planned to drive over to Florence, Alabama as soon as we could work out our schedules. But on March 9, Bill had a fatal heart attack. Sudden. No warning signs. And the “Ides of March” would never be the same.Graduation, May 29, 1969.

Truth is, spiritually speaking, we are all underdogs, and it is of our own doing. We all needed someone to step in and bring us to a place of acceptance. Whether born in Alabama, Massachusetts, or someplace else, we are all in need of rescue. The Apostle Paul shared a truth in an ancient blog post to the Romans that includes all of us underdogs –“but God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us“.

As I travel through everyday living I pray I will be on the lookout for underdogs.

Roots That Struck A Cord

October 16, 2014~ Faith, Music

My Guild guitar. A surprise from Pam almost 40 years ago. Truly a treasured instrument.

My Guild guitar. A surprise from Pam almost 40 years ago. Truly a treasured instrument.

As we have said before, music has been a huge part of our everyday living.  And it is a story that has evolved through the years.  Today, I want to share with you my extensive musical background and intense training that most of you are unaware of.  It began when I was 6 and Mother decided I would take piano once each week right after school. (Note I stated “Mother decided”). What a thrill for a boy in first grade at Striplin Elementary!  The school was located where the Gadsden, Alabama public library now stands.  This was 1957.  So, it was convenient to walk 1/2 block to Mrs. Sykes house on the corner of College and Walnut for a half hour of exciting instruction. To a first grader, she had to be at least 90.  I literally hated it for 2 years–not so much the half hour (Mrs. Sykes was a sweet lady), but the practice Mother imposed on the other 6 days!  Mom finally gave in and allowed me to quit.

I later became very thankful for those 2 years.  I learned some very basic and important fundamentals about music.  Mother was a wonderful soprano and loved music.  I think these early days shaped me more than I realized.  I grew to pay attention to music and decided I loved it, too!  I am now very glad that I made that walk to the house on the corner with those red music books in hand!

In a few years, the notion of singing and playing a guitar struck me pretty hard.  I didn’t get a guitar for a while, but finally did get one from Sears.  Yes, Sears!  It was a Kay acoustic.  The strings seemed about 1 inch off the neck and a pair of vice grips were needed to compress them to achieve a sound.  I got so discouraged after a few weeks that I put it away for good, having never learned to make a single chord.  Because of this, it was somewhat difficult a year or two later to convince my grandmother that I could learn to play.  The secret, I told her, rested in owning that burgundy Gibson electric at Gadsden Music Company.  She did eventually buy it for me, and as a bonus, Mr. Green had his guitar teacher give me 8 free lessons as part of the purchase.  That’s been about fifty years and I’m still playing.  I had no idea how this one thing would influence and shape so much of my life–and that’s no exaggeration!

With the decade of the 60’s on us, there was nothing else to do but form a band, and I found three classmates who were on board with the idea!  I suggested each an instrument to play and told them we had to get the resources to purchase what was needed to get started.  And by the way–none of those guys played any instrument and I’d never heard one of them sing!  In all honesty and with all due respect, this is not the way to start a band!  But North Gadsden needed a band.  I came up with a name–“The What Four”.  Can you imagine?!  That’s quite amusing now, but I thought it was creative at the time.  We weren’t so good I don’t suppose, but we had the best time and grew very close as friends during those days.  And it probably helped us stay out of trouble too!  Kids at “sock hops” only needed noise that sounded at least a little like the pop songs on the radio, and we could handle that!  We played cheap, too.  I guess it sounds better to say we were very affordable entertainment!

I am the one in the white shorts (on the right)

In later days and after High School, I played with some other guys and bands as people come and go and take on other interests.  One very talented musician and I became close friends while still in High School.  We shared a lot of music and playing time–sometimes just the two of us in his den.  I plan a special post about him in the future.  I have hundreds of “music stories” I’d love to tell, but you folks don’t have the time to read such.

So,  I’ll conclude this with the most significant and important way God used the music to change my life and direction in ’69 and ’70.  1969 had me searching and not sure about much in life except the fact that I still loved and played the music.  Playing at after school dances and other places was fun and all, but there had to be more.  And there was!

I providentially made my way to a revival meeting one night in June of 1970 with no interest in church whatsoever.  But later that night, I responded to the love of Christ and the salvation that was mine as a free gift by trusting in Him and what He had done for all of us on a cross.  My search was over!  And I also had a new venue for my music–not right away, but in time.  The next Sunday, I attended church as I now had reason and wanted to know more.  I wasn’t expecting to have music play a role in that first Sunday service, but there she was–a musician, playing the church organ–and she looked really good too!  Both of these facts grabbed my attention.

I had to have a strategy to get her to notice me!  I knew that my approach, somehow, had to be musical. First, it was needful over the next few weeks to make her aware that I was a singer and guitarist, and even better–played in a band!  Girls like guys with guitars, I thought.  I really liked a song that was very popular and getting a lot of radio play that summer, so I bought the old 45 rpm single.  Strangely, the words kept resonating in my brain and I decided one day that this was my message.  I’m really shy and this record could say it for me.  It was risky to show up at a house unannounced to give a girl you’d only known a few weeks a vinyl record.  But I took the chance.  She could easily determine that I was an aggressive weirdo, but she didn’t!  It was her favorite song and she didn’t own it.  I had no idea!

photo 3 (16)

She began to come hear me sing and play.  By that time, I had a Fender Jaguar guitar.  Sunburst! I’d give anything to have it now.  After about a year, I gave up playing in the band.  Some churches in those days frowned on that kind of music.  There was no place in the church for me to use the only instrument I owned and knew how to play.  An electric guitar would never be allowed it seemed, so I eventually sold it, although that was not necessarily a good decision. But, by that time, God had allowed a black piece of vinyl to open a door that changed everything.  Stopping by her house that day in 1970 had been a very good decision!

“My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast!
I will sing and make melody!”
Psalm‬ ‭57‬:‭7‬

Happy Wednesday! I set a table next to our woodlan Happy Wednesday! I set a table next to our woodlands in memory of my beautiful Mother who was a lovely example of a Proverbs 31 woman. Mother had the gift of hospitality and shared it with everyone. Karl Rosenfield peonies from my garden fill a treasured keepsake pitcher handed down from my grandmother! A beautiful floral April Cornell ‘Lillianna’ tablecloth and Famille Rose salad plates elevate the status of the old picnic table next to our woodlands. I have collected bejeweled enamel trinket boxes for many years and shared a few on the table for whimsy and fun. For memories of my Mother, click the link in my profile.

With glorious weather, the table next to our woodl With glorious weather, the table next to our woodlands was perfect for teatime! It is Tea on Tuesdays with blogging friends Mary and Kitty. The table is enhanced by views toward the mountain, woodlands, and the large Snowball Viburnum. The verdant rye grass appears as a green carpet that has been spread for Easter! Vintage Fitz and Floyd ‘Herb Garden’ teapots, sugar and creamer, and oval tray are suited for springtime with their embossed bows, vegetables, and words. A bouquet of Kwanzan Cherry blossoms add more spring color to the setting.

I am serving a simple teatime with Earl Grey tea, savory egg salad filled phyllo cups, and sweet vanilla cupcakes with cream cheese icing, and macarons! A favorite cottage rose tablecloth and Essential napkins are by April Cornell.

We are most blessed to celebrate the resurrection of Christ, being the source of new life, yet new life that is eternal. The beauty of this spring will again give way to another autumn in a few months, but the significance of His empty tomb will never change! Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our woodlands and this is the first one of the season, an Easter/Spring table! I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bodily resurrection enables all those who choose to follow Him to have assured victory over our greatest enemy…death!

I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

A fluffle of moss bunnies hopped up to the picnic table. A ‘Charming’ tablecloth with Mary Lake-Thompson napkins and Williams Sonoma enchanting ‘Famille Rose’ bunny plates!

I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition of Tea on Tuesdays. My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. As an April Cornell Brand Ambassador, I was gifted these gorgeous linens! I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.

I am serving my favorite, Earl Gray tea, from an Eileen’s Reserve teapot. Teacups by Grace Teaware and vintage Rose Chintz salad plates by Johnson Brothers add more floral patterns to the mix. Japanese Magnolia blooms were cut from my garden and placed in a lilypad teapot!

After the gray and cloudy days, I needed a dose of color and decided to set a colorful citrus themed brunch! Using a bird gold and pewter stand, I mixed a citrus medley of lemons, oranges, and limes with pink and white carnations as the centerpiece. The table is highlighted with blue and white dishware. Fresh squeezed orange juice, French-pressed coffee and sweet treats of lemon poppyseed muffins, lemon cake with lemon icing, and lemon pastries are perfect for a small brunch.
