Signatures Of Autumn

September 24, 2015~ Decorating, Outdoors

“Blessed be his glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with his glory!  Amen and Amen!”
Psalm 72:19

I guess I can now officially say Happy Autumn! Summer 2015 is off the calendar, and although not in its full glory yet, the signatures of Autumn are on their way!  With every seasons change come new graces…God gives us new sights, smells, tastes, and weather to remind us we have entered into something new and refreshing.  One of the most notable changes we experience as summer gives way to autumn is the glorious leaves and the rich, deep colors that are so pleasing to the eye!  Today, we are revisiting some of our favorite autumnal scenes from the most recent years.  Come along as we travel the roads of the deep south and we will even make a stop by our home in the Appalachian foothills!      “By all these lovely tokens September days are here, with summer’s best of weather and autumn’s best of cheer”
Helen Hunt Jackson

“And God said, ‘Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years,  and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.’ And it was so”
Genesis 1:14-15
A simple vignette graces our kitchen island! “Listen!  The wind is rising, and the air is wild with leaves, we have had our summer evenings, now for October eves”
Humbert Wolfe
The rustic barn where Seth and Allison were married! “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever”
Isaiah 40:8
The sweet hubby made the pumpkin topiary on our kitchen porch! “Every leaf speaks bliss to me, fluttering from the autumn tree”
Emily Bronte
Mixing porcelain and real pumpkins for an autumnal tablescape! “No spring nor summer beauty hath such grace as I have seen in one autumnal face”
John DonneMy cute little wheelbarrow with a bounty of autumn’s goodness!
“Fall has always been my favorite season.  The time when everything bursts with its last beauty, as if nature had been saving up all year for the grand finale”
Lauren DeStefano Seasonal color is making an appearance in our courtyard! “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers”
Anne of Green Gables
We love to picnic – even in our yard!“Autumn, the year’s last loveliest smile”
William Cullen Bryant What better place to enjoy a steaming mug of hot chocolate…under the rose arbor!
“He changes times and seasons; He removes kings and sets up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding”
Daniel 2:21

F. Scott Fitzgerald

Our Garden Is Growing!

July 16, 2015~ Outdoors

“‘Ah, Lord God! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.”
‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭32:17‬ ‭

A few months ago, it started off as simply ideas from a Pinterest board.  Then, before we knew it, landscapers filled our backyard space for weeks to lay the foundation.   Next came many hours of tedious labor by both the workers and my hard-working husband, and we were able to show you the finished work!  And you, our readers, have been right there with us, generously commenting on our new garden space with so many requests to post updates!  After a few rain showers and a whole lot of sunshine, we are excited to show you how our garden is growing!  Please join me as we take a little stroll!

I am contemplating putting a swing under the arbor -but I enjoy using the space for al fresco dining!  I had planned to use my rusty iron statutes in the garden but decided to keep them here, instead.

I am loving the picket fence that Butch installed!

The feathery plumes from ornamental fountain grass..if only it was a perennial!

Rusty ornamental butterfly contrasts the vanilla strawberry hydrangeas!

The apricot drift roses continue to bloom!  Love the color!

Limelight hydrangeas showing off their lime color!

As the limelight bloom matures, it becomes more white!

Our okra is growing and needs thinning!  Okra likes hot temps, so it should be happy!

Sage and lavender are doing nicely!  Can’t wait for the fragrant lavender blooms!

My sweet friend, Janice gave me a set of herb garden markers several years ago!  Don’t you just love them?

The color of the sunshine ligustrums adds a great contrast to the other greens!

Our resident owl keeps moving around all over the place!

As the blooms mature on the vanilla strawberry hydrangea they change colors!  Amazing beauty!

Delicate bloom!

The bloodgood Japanese maples in the rear corners of the garden provide a nice contrasting color!

The thrift planted around the bronze statue is filling in…soft touch hollies will provide green all year. The lantana has struggled and has provided little color so far!

The zoysia sod is thick like a carpet and is a bright green. I would love to do the entire backyard space-maybe next year!

You can see a few lantana blooms here!

The extreme heat and little rain for the past two weeks has required much watering to keep the garden growing!

View from the patio!

Our side porch referred to as the “kitchen porch” with  a pair of asparagus ferns on each side of the door and a pot of petunias on the step.  Do you see the flag’s reflection in the door?

Petunias come in so many colors!

Hanging baskets on the side of the porch.  I love potato vine…it is so easy to grow!

Our small courtyard with a vintage street lamp!

Our sunflowers have been so beautiful and Butch has planted more for fall blooming!  Can you see Butch photo-bombing?

Apparently, the garden is Oreo’s new kingdom!

Collage
We love strolling through the garden with you…maybe next time you can stay for a tall glass of sweet tea!

Here Comes The Sun(flowers)!

July 9, 2015~ Decorating, Outdoors

“He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end”
Ecclesiastes 3:11

There is something about sunflowers that just make me smile!  Maybe it’s the way their brightness represents the sun.  Or it could be that when I look at one, it’s as if I see it smiling back at me! Or maybe it’s the way the vibrant yellow contrasts with the beautiful blue skies.  Or maybe a combination of all three!  Whatever it is, sunflowers bring a little joy and “happy” to my day!

As a young bride, I will never forget seeing a bedroom in a friend’s home that was decorated in a sunflower theme.  The comforter, window treatments, artwork were all dressed in sunflowers.  The room just oozed happy!!  And now, as years have gone by, sunflowers are still my flower of choice from the grocery store to make a happy bouquet for the kitchen or dining room table.

Butch and I have talked many times about planting  sunflowers…after all, we have almost 15 acres of land!  Last July, while visiting the Texas Hill Country, we stopped at a remarkable wild seed farm outside of Fredericksburg (www.wildseedfarms.com).  We could have spent the entire day at this real working wildflower farm and its lovely shops!  Fields of wild flowers were ablaze with color…and of course, our eyes were caught by a sea of the most gorgeous sunflowers!  That’s when we knew that these beauties had to be planted here at our home in Northeast Alabama! So, with expert help from their staff, we selected one pound of Grey Stripe Sunflower seed! Now, we tend to buy things and put them away, never able to find them again.  But I made sure that didn’t happen to our seeds…I placed the seeds in plain view as I open my pantry door to serve as a reminder!  So when the warmer weather rolled in, Butch prepared a little plot to plant the seeds!  And now we have our very own sunflower patch to enjoy and to share with you, our readers!  Maybe it will add a little “happy” to your day as it does mine, each time I look out my kitchen window!

Sunflowers attract good bugs!  The big round landing pad packed with pollen is yelling, “Eat here”! Our first sign of a bloom!  Allison, our daughter-in-love, chose sunflowers as her primary flower for their wedding!  You can see more here: The Wedding Edition. Katy, our chosen daughter, cut sunflowers from our patch to add more color to the porch of her new house!  The red door and bistro set are just too fun!  Stay tuned as we decorate her home!
Birthing of a bloom!! A bucket full of beauty!! Our Grey Stripe sunflowers are considered a giant among sunflowers!  They can reach 12 feet in height and produce 10″ – 12″ flowers! Allie’s bridal bouquet! Sunflowers, of course, thrive in full sun. The Grey Stripe variety is drought tolerant and makes plump tasty seeds!A recent Tablescape Tuesday with happy sunflowers as the centerpiece!  You can see it here: Sunflowers & Summer.
Sweet sunflower arrangement awaiting Allison and her bridesmaids in the carriage house! Our Grey Stripes are easy to grow and are not fussy about soil!  Their seeds invite birds. The eating area in our garden provides us with a bird’s eye view! Pasture view of our happy patch! Allie’s bridesmaids’ bouquets! The sunflower is an important source of food.  Sunflower oil is a valued and healthy oil and sunflower seeds are a nutritious and tasty snack! Sunflower varieties!  Sunflowers belong to the genus Helianthus, which contains over 80 different species! Ah…red barn and sunflowers!5826db22df452296989669abe1c1cb42 A field near San Gimignano in Tuscany Sunflower loveliness in vintage tea canisters!tumblr_nciifokbOB1shc9bto1_500A field of sunflowers…bliss!  A basketful of sunshine! A creative display! Harvesting and drying sunflower seeds!spring-centerpieces-happy-party-theme-for-new-year-wedding-ideas-5 Sunflowers mix so well with other flowers

A 🍓strawberry🍓 themed tea was set under the arbor where the Lady Banks roses have climbed up and over. The roses bloomed in early spring and they were gorgeous, but now they provide a green canopy of shade, perfect for afternoon tea! A delicious strawberry and vanilla green tea is served along with strawberry trifles in vintage ice cream sundae glasses. Precious memories are always shared with my tables!

With glorious weather, the table next to our woodl With glorious weather, the table next to our woodlands was perfect for teatime! It is Tea on Tuesdays with blogging friends Mary and Kitty. The table is enhanced by views toward the mountain, woodlands, and the large Snowball Viburnum. The verdant rye grass appears as a green carpet that has been spread for Easter! Vintage Fitz and Floyd ‘Herb Garden’ teapots, sugar and creamer, and oval tray are suited for springtime with their embossed bows, vegetables, and words. A bouquet of Kwanzan Cherry blossoms add more spring color to the setting.

I am serving a simple teatime with Earl Grey tea, savory egg salad filled phyllo cups, and sweet vanilla cupcakes with cream cheese icing, and macarons! A favorite cottage rose tablecloth and Essential napkins are by April Cornell.

We are most blessed to celebrate the resurrection of Christ, being the source of new life, yet new life that is eternal. The beauty of this spring will again give way to another autumn in a few months, but the significance of His empty tomb will never change! Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our woodlands and this is the first one of the season, an Easter/Spring table! I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bodily resurrection enables all those who choose to follow Him to have assured victory over our greatest enemy…death!

I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

A fluffle of moss bunnies hopped up to the picnic table. A ‘Charming’ tablecloth with Mary Lake-Thompson napkins and Williams Sonoma enchanting ‘Famille Rose’ bunny plates!

I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

For more of my Daddy’s story, click the link in my bio.

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition of Tea on Tuesdays. My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. As an April Cornell Brand Ambassador, I was gifted these gorgeous linens! I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.

I am serving my favorite, Earl Gray tea, from an Eileen’s Reserve teapot. Teacups by Grace Teaware and vintage Rose Chintz salad plates by Johnson Brothers add more floral patterns to the mix. Japanese Magnolia blooms were cut from my garden and placed in a lilypad teapot!

Happy first Monday of February! After so many cold Happy first Monday of February! After so many cold days, we are experiencing a tease of spring with a 73 degree day that is forecast. After the gray and cloudy days, I needed a dose of color and decided to set a colorful citrus themed brunch! Using a bird gold and pewter stand, I mixed a citrus medley of lemons, oranges, and limes with pink and white carnations as the centerpiece. The table is highlighted with blue and white dishware. Fresh squeezed orange juice, French-pressed coffee and sweet treats of lemon poppyseed muffins, lemon cake with lemon icing, and lemon pastries are perfect for a small brunch. A faux lemon topiary belonged to my beloved Mother and seemed a perfect addition to a citrus-themed table!
