Here Comes The Sun(flowers)!

July 9, 2015~ Decorating, Outdoors

“He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end”
Ecclesiastes 3:11

There is something about sunflowers that just make me smile!  Maybe it’s the way their brightness represents the sun.  Or it could be that when I look at one, it’s as if I see it smiling back at me! Or maybe it’s the way the vibrant yellow contrasts with the beautiful blue skies.  Or maybe a combination of all three!  Whatever it is, sunflowers bring a little joy and “happy” to my day!

As a young bride, I will never forget seeing a bedroom in a friend’s home that was decorated in a sunflower theme.  The comforter, window treatments, artwork were all dressed in sunflowers.  The room just oozed happy!!  And now, as years have gone by, sunflowers are still my flower of choice from the grocery store to make a happy bouquet for the kitchen or dining room table.

Butch and I have talked many times about planting  sunflowers…after all, we have almost 15 acres of land!  Last July, while visiting the Texas Hill Country, we stopped at a remarkable wild seed farm outside of Fredericksburg (www.wildseedfarms.com).  We could have spent the entire day at this real working wildflower farm and its lovely shops!  Fields of wild flowers were ablaze with color…and of course, our eyes were caught by a sea of the most gorgeous sunflowers!  That’s when we knew that these beauties had to be planted here at our home in Northeast Alabama! So, with expert help from their staff, we selected one pound of Grey Stripe Sunflower seed! Now, we tend to buy things and put them away, never able to find them again.  But I made sure that didn’t happen to our seeds…I placed the seeds in plain view as I open my pantry door to serve as a reminder!  So when the warmer weather rolled in, Butch prepared a little plot to plant the seeds!  And now we have our very own sunflower patch to enjoy and to share with you, our readers!  Maybe it will add a little “happy” to your day as it does mine, each time I look out my kitchen window!

Sunflowers attract good bugs!  The big round landing pad packed with pollen is yelling, “Eat here”! Our first sign of a bloom!  Allison, our daughter-in-love, chose sunflowers as her primary flower for their wedding!  You can see more here: The Wedding Edition. Katy, our chosen daughter, cut sunflowers from our patch to add more color to the porch of her new house!  The red door and bistro set are just too fun!  Stay tuned as we decorate her home!
Birthing of a bloom!! A bucket full of beauty!! Our Grey Stripe sunflowers are considered a giant among sunflowers!  They can reach 12 feet in height and produce 10″ – 12″ flowers! Allie’s bridal bouquet! Sunflowers, of course, thrive in full sun. The Grey Stripe variety is drought tolerant and makes plump tasty seeds!A recent Tablescape Tuesday with happy sunflowers as the centerpiece!  You can see it here: Sunflowers & Summer.
Sweet sunflower arrangement awaiting Allison and her bridesmaids in the carriage house! Our Grey Stripes are easy to grow and are not fussy about soil!  Their seeds invite birds. The eating area in our garden provides us with a bird’s eye view! Pasture view of our happy patch! Allie’s bridesmaids’ bouquets! The sunflower is an important source of food.  Sunflower oil is a valued and healthy oil and sunflower seeds are a nutritious and tasty snack! Sunflower varieties!  Sunflowers belong to the genus Helianthus, which contains over 80 different species! Ah…red barn and sunflowers!5826db22df452296989669abe1c1cb42 A field near San Gimignano in Tuscany Sunflower loveliness in vintage tea canisters!tumblr_nciifokbOB1shc9bto1_500A field of sunflowers…bliss!  A basketful of sunshine! A creative display! Harvesting and drying sunflower seeds!spring-centerpieces-happy-party-theme-for-new-year-wedding-ideas-5 Sunflowers mix so well with other flowers

Land That I Love!

June 25, 2015~ Decorating, Food & Entertaining, Outdoors, Recipes

“But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life”
Romans 6:22

Barbecues…fireworks…parades…hot dogs…picnics…lemonade…concerts…home-made ice cream…grilled burgers…swimming…baseball games…family reunions…boating!   This is how we will celebrate America’s Independence Day (often referred to as the 4th of July) in little towns and big cities across our beautiful land!  Red, white, & blue will be the colors of the day, and being with the ones we love will be the highlight of our long weekend.  While it is a fitting time to celebrate the independence of our great nation, let’s be reminded of the ultimate freedom we have–in Christ!

I hope that you all enjoy the July 4th inspiration from my Pinterest board,  Summer Dreaming.  Each picture is linked to the original source!

So many folks enjoy the water on the 4th!  A cute picnic on the pier is ideal! A timeworn potting bench is a great idea for a food station!Drink stand with patriotic details!

I would so enjoy dining on this rustic porch!
This porch offers a big patriotic welcome!
Red, white, and blue trifle…sweet ending to your celebration!
This dessert kabob with strawberries, blueberries, and brownie bites is simple and delicious! Love a sugar cookie pizza with fresh fruit! This would be a crowd pleaser – red and white velvet mini cakes with buttercream frosting!  My guys would request cream cheese icing! Here is a great tip: freeze berries in ice cube trays!Red, white, and blue is always appropriate…even in a bedroom!
A vintage flag with 48 stars hangs in an entrance hall!  What a conversation piece!

An eye-catching display of quilts!

Revealing The {Not So} Secret Garden

June 11, 2015~ Outdoors

 “For you shall go out in joy and be led forth in peace;
the mountains and the hills before you shall break forth into singing,
and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands”
Isaiah 55:12

It’s finally here!  We are so excited to reveal our new landscaping and garden project in our back yard space!  We have been talking about it on the blog forever it seems! We’ve talked about endless possibilities, and many of you chimed in! If you haven’t already, you can read the posts about it here:
How Does Your Garden Grow?
Patio Possibilities?
Backyard Beginnings
On our property of 15 acres, you will find hay fields, woods, and lovely views of the Appalachian foothills!  We have always loved the wide open space in our back yard, and it has been everything from a baseball field to a track for a battery operated jeep to a home for an above ground pool for 19 years!  When Butch removed the pool in 2013, we decided we would wait before landscaping!  But now, the wait is over!  The work began this spring, and now we hope to enjoy it for many years to come!  I plan on adding lots of perennials this fall and yes, there will be many dinners for the two of us al fresco style!  So, welcome to our not so secret garden!!!  Come on…let’s take a walk around…

As we enter from the side, you will notice our picket fence!  Butch worked tirelessly installing it!
Getting closer, you can see a little more…   As you can see, a lot of stone was involved!  Can you tell much about it so far?      How about now?  As we approach the focal point…  …the bronze statue  The landscapers did such a great job.  We are very pleased!  Do you all remember what it looked like before?  Lets take a look…    I would say they definitely transformed our backyard into a brand new place!   One of my priorities was to have a space for eating al fresco!  The bronze statue is actually a fountain, but Butch said emphatically, “No!!!” to the upkeep of a fountain!  I love it as an architectural piece.  Surrounding the statue is white thrift that will fill in to make a nice ground cover.  The bottom tier is planted with soft touch holly and lantana for color!  I will replace the lantana in late fall with pansies!   Bloodgood Japanese maples were placed in each rear corner.  The lime green plants are sunshine ligustrums!  I really like the vivid burst of color that it adds to the garden!   Limelight hydrangeas are beginning to bloom!   A view from the back corner! Herbs were another priority!
The texture of lamb’s ear, the bright red salvia blooms, along with variegated liriope fills in the base surrounding the crape myrtle!  The low growing plants in front of the garden ornament are daisy gardenias-already anticipating their heavenly scent!    Blush nandinas line the front!   Coral bark Japanese maple

Late afternoon light   Zoysia sod is really looking good!   Can’t wait for the sunflowers (behind the fence) to bloom!  Butch planted okra seed on the far left side on Saturday morning…it is already up!  I see fried okra on our plates for summer!  My sweetheart has always wanted a picket fence…and he made it happen! Early morning light on the garden!  Apricot drift roses will provide summer color! We moved a smaller ginkgo tree from another spot and planted it at the front corner to be a garden feature.  Its colorful leaves in autumn will be a great addition!  I am excited about the vanilla strawberry hydrangeas that are just showing signs of blooms!  I have never seen one in bloom!  A pair of Sioux crape myrtles border a side entrance!
Butch loves ornamental grasses…a trio of adagio maiden grasses are planted behind the dining area!  Behind the picket fence is pasture with acres of wooded area that borders the river! The cloud formations on Tuesday evening were awesome!  The landscaping has been Oreo approved!Collage Thank you all for taking a stroll through our garden!  We love each of your comments and sharing our everyday living with you!final-closer-both-1Linking with Pieced Pastimes, Silver Pennies, Life on Lakeshore Drive, Thoughts From Alice, Mod Vintage Life, Coastal Charm, My Uncommon Slice of Suburbia, The Dedicated House, Dwellings-Heart of Your Home, Savvy Southern Style, Ivy and Elephants, French Country Cottage, From My Front Porch To Yours, Stone Gable, Confessions of a Plate Addict, Worthing Court, Between Naps on the Porch, Cedar Hill Farmhouse, A Stroll Thru Life, The Style Sisters, The Charm of Home, Cornerstone Confessions, A Delightsome Life, Imparting Grace, Posed Perfection, Katherines Corner, My Romantic Home, Chic On A Shoestring Decorating, Rooted In Thyme, Share Your Cup, The Enchanting Rose, Alabama Women Bloggers, 21 Rosemary Lane, Northern Nesting, Oh My Heartsie Girl,  Cozy Little House, Rattlebridge Farm, The Turquoise Home

Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of th Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of the year! I am sharing this merry table that was inspired by @april.cornell Victorian Christmas tablecloth! As an April Cornell brand ambassador I received the beautiful tablecloth and lovely Essential blue napkins. The red and white checkered top lends itself to classic casual elegance. The lovely snowy village on the border of the cloth came to life with a couple of snowy wood slice chargers that are topped with tiny little village shops that my beloved Mother gave me many years ago. They hold a special place in my heart. The salad plates depict Christmas Village scenes and complement the cloth. An easy centerpiece of fresh fruit is nestled atop fresh greens and placed in a Natale bowl by @arteitalicacrownlinen I have joined 17 table stylists for a Christmas Tablescape Blog Hop. Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morn Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morning Blooms. The theme for the July edition is Summer Living! Living in the country, our summer days are filled with outdoor chores, one of which is gardening! My ‘Little Lamb’ panicled hydrangeas are in full bloom and are the star of my simple table setting! The basket holding the hydrangeas is very sentimental. It belonged to my beloved Mother who kept her journals and devotional books in the basket. I often picked up the books and journals to read while visiting my sweet Daddy. Since my Daddy passed away in March, my brother and I are cleaning out our parents home. I just knew the basket was coming home with me! My precious Mother would have loved seeing it filled with flowers! A vintage tablecloth, @april.cornell ‘Eden’ napkins, Portmeirion ‘Botanic Garden’ dinner plates and stemware from Tuesday Morning (many years ago) complete the table!

Happy July! 2025 is half over, and where did it go Happy July! 2025 is half over, and where did it go? I am celebrating the red, white, and blue with a table set in the garden with a couple of treats and sweet iced tea for this hot summer day. Precious memories are attached to the checked tablecloth. My beloved Mother prepared Sunday lunch every week until she passed away. Each Sunday was a feast comparable to Thanksgiving. During the summer months, she often used this checked cloth. More delicious meals than I could count have been served on this cloth!

Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer table is in my garden. I decided the table should be simple to allow the hydrangeas to be the star! I always love sharing a ‘special something’ on a table setting that is sentimental and has wonderful memories attached like the majolica pitcher that belonged to my beloved Mother. A beautiful blue and white tablecloth by @april.cornell for @victoriamagazine was a surprise from my sweet husband and also included the ‘blue roses’ tea set which was a part of the limited edition when it was first introduced a few years ago. The Sur La Table floral-patterned earthenware was inspired by London’s Chelsea Flower Show in collaboration with artist, April Cornell. Vintage hobnail milk glass stemware was purchased at the Longest Yard Sale. Sometimes I just enjoy a simple table!

Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our woodlands and this is the first one of the season, an Easter/Spring table! I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bodily resurrection enables all those who choose to follow Him to have assured victory over our greatest enemy…death!

I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition of Tea on Tuesdays. My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. As an April Cornell Brand Ambassador, I was gifted these gorgeous linens! I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.

I am serving my favorite, Earl Gray tea, from an Eileen’s Reserve teapot. Teacups by Grace Teaware and vintage Rose Chintz salad plates by Johnson Brothers add more floral patterns to the mix. Japanese Magnolia blooms were cut from my garden and placed in a lilypad teapot!
