All In The Family {Part Two}

June 4, 2015~ Faith, Outdoors

“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,  for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body”
1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Exercise can bring glory to our Creator if done with the right attitude and perspective.  Not everyone is able to exercise…there are those who, unfortunately, cannot move at all.  We are all different in what we can, and/or need to do, and a sovereign God knows this!  Be encouraged and do what you can!  As you will see coming up, the key is to start!  Paul speaks of athletes, running a race, exercise, and discipline when he addresses the folks at Corinth (I Corinthians 9).  His message indicates that exercise is good!  He reminds the Corinthians and all of us that the prize obtained for worldly accomplishments is perishable.  So, whether the prize for me is to feel better, be stronger, lose two pounds or two hundred pounds, I am encouraged to do it with an attitude that brings glory to God!  The prize at the end of this race, the race to our eternal home, is imperishable.  A few weeks ago, Pam and I shared our story as to how we got started exercising, (you can read it here: All In The Family {Part One}) and this week, we will move on and see what our younger athletes have to share!

Seth’s Story

When I was a young boy, I was in very good shape. I loved to ride my bicycle, and even tried my best to keep up with my neighbors after they got 4-wheelers!  I played baseball and basketball through junior high and begin working out and playing football.  I was in tip-top shape.  After high school when the sports were over, there wasn’t much motivation for me to continue getting all that exercise. I slowly put on weight…to the tune of 30 lbs! It wasn’t until I met a young lady in 2011 that ran marathons that I started getting back into shape. img_8887She lived out of town, and when she would come home once a month, she wanted me to run with her. I began running in the mean time to avoid embarrassment. I made 2 miles with her by the time she came home. I enjoyed getting back into shape now that I had new motivation! I lost that 30lbs and began working out some. IMG_8886That young lady is now my wife. We got tired of the same old “globo” gym and decided to build a CrossFit gym in our garage. We also started going weekly to one of our local affiliates, CrossFit Rabid. I just may be in better shape now than I was in high school.

Allison’s Story

At 12 years of age, I was overweight and lacking in self confidence. It was at that time that I realized I could take control of my weight through a change of eating habits and exercise.  With a resolve to lose weight, my brother created me a workout regimen that would change my outlook on exercise for life.  Along with a change in diet in which I gave up cokes, little debbie cakes, and seconds at dinner, my brother became my very own personal trainer! He had me doing pushups, situps, and burpees along with running up the very steep hill we lived on 5 days a week. By the time I turned 13, I had lost nearly 30 pounds giving me a confidence that shaped my teen years!IMG_8796Over the  past 13 years, I have taken up running, fitness classes, forms of calisthenics, and most recently, Crossfit.  Running has been a huge part of my fitness journey since I was a freshman in college when I participated in my first 5K. Since then, I have run many more races including 10K’s, 15K’s, half marathons, and one full marathon….all of which have kept me motivated to continue running!IMG_8944Exercise began as a source to lose weight, but over the years exercise has become an important part of who I am. It provides relief from the trials and stress of life, allows me to stay healthy and maintain weight while feeling my best, and also gives me a community to be a part of.  For me, exercise is not only physical but spiritual as well.  I am often reminded while exercising that strength and endurance are only built through perseverance which is similar to our Christian walk. 5

Katy’s Story

beforeHave you ever reached a point in your life when you looked around and thought “how on earth did I end up here?”  That is what happened with me in 2012.  I remember looking at a picture and thinking, “is that really me?!”  I had been active my whole life and maintained a decent look, but at this point, I knew something had to be done. I was extremely overweight.  And I had no idea where to start.  I knew Pam exercised, so I began talking to her, and through her encouragement, I joined the YMCA.  It was awful.  I think the first time I went, I made it a whole three minutes on the elliptical. I was ridiculously out of shape, but I never gave up.  As hard as it was, I knew this was a start!  Going on a regular basis coupled with a healthy diet, I started seeing results!  img_8775

But as with anything else, I got a little tired of the mundane.  I needed to spruce up my exercise routine!  Allison is a runner and I talked with her about running and decided to give it a try.  Next thing I knew, I had registered for a 5k!  I trained diligently, and completed my first 5k in January of 2014! Allison ran it with me and finished probably 20 minutes before me, but she came to find me on the course and crossed the finish line with me!  FullSizeRender (5)What an encouragement she has been to me in my road to better health!FullSizeRender (6)One of my longest runs!kettl

I am not by any means where I want to be, but I am good with my progress.  It has been slow and gradual, but consistent.  I feel better than I ever have, and exercise has become a great outlet for me!  I recently joined a crossfit gym, so no two days are ever alike and I work out with different people each day.  It has become the highlight of my afternoons!

I love that God takes the mundane, ordinary events in our life and reveals himself to us.  Often in unexpected places. Now that I am into it, it’s not so bad.  I actually look forward to it SOMEDAYS.  But I know that the training is preparing me for an even bigger goal.  And I see progress.

And so it is with my race of faith…my ordinary days of “training” are preparing me for an even greater day.  The ultimate day!
Excerpt from my blog post, Running and Redemption

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God…
 …for the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.”
 Hebrews 12:1-2, 11

All In The Family {Part One}

May 18, 2015~ Outdoors

“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,  for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body”
1 Corinthians 6:19-20

As beautiful weather settles in with blue skies and warmer temps, I have found myself outside a lot lately.  As most of you know we have started our outdoor landscaping project, (you can see progress here: Backyard Beginnings), and that has kept me busy outdoors.  With nice days arriving, I have also been hard pressed to find an excuse not to be outside exercising!  Do you exercise?  In our family, we all exercise and each have our own story as to how we started and what keeps us motivated.  Today, Butch and I will share, and make sure you stay tuned for part two as Seth, Allison, and Katy share theirs!

Pam’s Story

Exercise…most folks either love it or hate it!  There is no neutral ground.  Personally, I have a love/hate relationship with it!  My exercise routine has had it’s ebbs and flows through the years!  I was fairly active until Butch and I married and settled into our everyday living!  We began camping as a young married couple and I learned to waterski, but that was about the extent of my physical activity!  By my late twenties, I started a walking routine on our little country road and it became something I loved!  The view that I was able to take in each day really helped too!  I never will forget the day that I decided to run the entire distance which was four miles…I couldn’t believe I had actually accomplished this milestone. Talk about motivating!  Running became a way of life!  I ran 4 days a week…my four miles became a routine!  In 1985, after many years of praying for a child, we were finally expecting!  At this point, I went back to my walking routine.  After the birth of our son, I tried to run and walk but it was hard to find time to exercise, and it was no longer a priority.     Twenty three years later, in 2008, I found myself needing to lose weight and take better care of myself.  At this point, I incorporated a healthy eating plan and started walking again.  I lost the weight and guess what…I felt great!  I continued the walking program until 2012 and decided I would throw a little running in with the walking.  To my surprise,  I ran a mile and walked a mile on that cold January day and within a couple of weeks I was running two miles!  I even ran my first organized 5k in 2012!  Today, I continue my two miles a day four or five times a week on the same road I began walking on many years ago…although now it is more of a jog than a run!  Do I love it?  Well, not exactly!  It takes all the discipline I can muster to make myself go outside and start…but once I am out there,  I am so glad!  I have found it to be a great time to listen to worship music, pray, and a great time to reflect on the goodness of God!   Butch has always been my inspiration for exercise…he is like the “energizer bunny”!  I want to be able to keep up with him as we hike trails in the Rockies above Vail, ride horses in the Bitterroot Mountains of Montana, or run along the beach on the Emerald Coast!  But most importantly, I get to run.  What a gift of God’s mercy as a mature ?? year old, that I am able to run.  I encourage you to start some form of exercise.  You may not love it today, but in a year, you will look back and be so glad you started!  “…but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint”
‭Isaiah‬ ‭40‬:‭31

Butch’s Story

 I have always found it difficult to sit still for any length of time. I do a little better now as the years roll by but I have always been very active physically. Whether it’s work or a hobby, the level of exertion involved has never been the main determining factor when choosing an activity.
After Pam and I married, and she quickly developed her Mothers natural expertise in the area of food preparation; I soon realized I might need  a bit of extra exercise beyond the normal. That was certainly one factor that contributed to my decision to join a local gym and get into weight training.  I have remained active in weight lifting to various degrees for about 40 years now. It became another hobby. I was almost 35 when Seth was born and was stronger than  at any other time in my life.Realizing that including aerobic exercise was very important to overall health and fitness, I began to gradually add some jogging and stationary biking to my weekly routine as time would allow. Pam was very active in walking and jogging and encouraged me to do more. We were members of the YMCA for years and several guys I became friends with there were runners. A small group of us guys began meeting frequently  for a morning run, often before daylight, and usually 4 or 5 miles. That was a great motivation and it energized the day. One guy was a marathon runner with many marathons to his credit, including Boston. I will always remember how he would adjust his pace to my level and run with me until I finished.
I had no interest in competing or even running in a fun run or event. I was strictly running to stay in shape, to feel better, and to chase away a few pounds. But one day while jogging alone, a notion struck me that I should run in an event. And before the day was over I announced to Pam I was entering a running event for the first time and I had decided on a marathon. Now who in their right mind makes 26.2 miles their first ever “fun run”?  I never admitted it then but I think it was a pride thing. My next birthday would be the half century mark and I think proving I could do it was a factor. Not necessarily proving it to others but to myself. So I read books and magazines on how to prepare and with the help of my experienced friend I found myself registered and ready to go about 6 months later. I did run it in a decent time, averaging over 6 miles per hour for the distance.  It takes an incredible amount of work and discipline both physically and mentally to be able to do that. I was over it, turned 50 a few months later, and have had no desire to tackle 26.2 again. Another (and more likely) factor in all this is having a 15 year old son that you love to do things with. You have to stay in shape if you want to participate in activities like skiing black diamonds in the Colorado mountains.

I still do my best to find time for running and lifting weights. I did both today. It’s more challenging than ever but possibly more important than ever. I consider it a privilege and a demonstration of Gods Mercy each and every time I can get out and get moving and do the things I do. This can change in an instant as I am well aware. An accident 8 years ago that I should have never survived much less find myself able to run again is a constant reminder for me of God’s Sovereignty and Grace. It’s a story of miracles that I may share more about in the future. I do believe that God, as part of His plan, allowed me to be in very good physical condition at that time and He used this as part of His work for me to survive. When possible, getting outdoors and enjoying creation is the best, but an inside workout is great too. I do not presume upon the future and for sure these bodies wear out and give up. That could be today, and if so, I can only be thankful. And if not, I’ll try to find a little time over the next couple of days to hit it again!3“…for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come”

Backyard Beginnings

May 11, 2015~ Outdoors

“The earth has yielded its increase;
    God, our God, shall bless us”
Psalm 67:6

Many of you have commented and have been interested in our landscaping project, so I wanted to give you an update!  Last Wednesday, the crew arrived after lunch with a caravan of trucks, trailers, and equipment.  They didn’t waste any time…they unloaded and got right to work!  We can see progress and we are excited!  Be sure to check out the other posts about our backyard project here:
How Does Your Garden Grow?
Patio Possibilites?

Two former steelworkers discuss the future of our back yard.  Frightening!

This is only part of the rocks that showed up in our pasture.  Butch wondered if we should go to the highway and erect a sign that says “See Rock City” with an arrow pointing our way!?

 The nature of the work when the boss has left the scene to pick up supplies…our foodie landscapers dined on Vienna sausages and pickle juice!

 A relief to see that the stones really do have a purpose as work gets underway!

This is really taking shape.  It’s our first full week of dry weather in a long time and the guys are taking advantage!

There are many decisions to be made concerning plants, flowers, grass…you know, all that “stuff” that goes into it.  You could break the bank with all the great options, but we have to be reasonable with budget and maintenance!  On Saturday, I made a quick trip to a nursery about sixty miles from home.  I wanted to see  some of the trees and plants that the landscaper recommended and look at decorative pieces for the garden!

I will be using two large pots (containers) in a green space!  They had many to choose from!We Southern girls love our hydrangeas! We will be using limelights for sure!I really liked this bench, but it won’t fit into the budget!Hydrangeas…never met one I didn’t like! I have enjoyed a small herb garden for years. Now I will have more space-so I can add new varieties! Beautiful roses!  …and I don’t have much success with them I will be planting perennials and annuals! I have always liked box woods…the basic and quintessential shrub! Ahh…the smell of gardenias! Lorapetalum provides relief from all the green with their burgundy leaves!

All of your suggestions and comments have been most helpful!  We can hardly wait to see the finished project…and share it with you,  our faithful readers!  Who knows…we might just have a patio party when it’s all said and done!  Thank you for joining us in our everyday living!

Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of th Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of the year! I am sharing this merry table that was inspired by @april.cornell Victorian Christmas tablecloth! As an April Cornell brand ambassador I received the beautiful tablecloth and lovely Essential blue napkins. The red and white checkered top lends itself to classic casual elegance. The lovely snowy village on the border of the cloth came to life with a couple of snowy wood slice chargers that are topped with tiny little village shops that my beloved Mother gave me many years ago. They hold a special place in my heart. The salad plates depict Christmas Village scenes and complement the cloth. Living in the country, our summer days are filled with outdoor chores, one of which is gardening! My ‘Little Lamb’ panicled hydrangeas are in full bloom and are the star of my simple table setting! The basket holding the hydrangeas is very sentimental. It belonged to my beloved Mother who kept her journals and devotional books in the basket. I often picked up the books and journals to read while visiting my sweet Daddy. Since my Daddy passed away in March, my brother and I are cleaning out our parents home. I just knew the basket was coming home with me! My precious Mother would have loved seeing it filled with flowers! A vintage tablecloth, @april.cornell ‘Eden’ napkins, Portmeirion ‘Botanic Garden’ dinner plates and stemware from Tuesday Morning (many years ago) complete the table!

Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our woodlands and this is the first one of the season, an Easter/Spring table! I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bodily resurrection enables all those who choose to follow Him to have assured victory over our greatest enemy…death!

 I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

A fluffle of moss bunnies hopped up to the picnic table. A ‘Charming’ tablecloth with Mary Lake-Thompson napkins and Williams Sonoma enchanting ‘Famille Rose’ bunny plates!

I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition of Tea on Tuesdays. My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. As an April Cornell Brand Ambassador, I was gifted these gorgeous linens! I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.

I am serving my favorite, Earl Gray tea, from an Eileen’s Reserve teapot. Teacups by Grace Teaware and vintage Rose Chintz salad plates by Johnson Brothers add more floral patterns to the mix. Japanese Magnolia blooms were cut from my garden and placed in a lilypad teapot!

Mary @ homeiswheretheboatis.net and I welcome Nancy @nance_endless_summer as our special guest! LINK in bio for the blog posts. Have a wonderful day!
