Trees of Life

November 17, 2014~ Faith, Outdoors

“And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is
pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden,
and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil”
‭Genesis‬ ‭2‬:‭9

The earth has more trees than we have numbers–and that’s if we only consider those alive today!  The total number since creation is beyond mind boggling.  Even so, I want to mention a few particular trees that bring back some simple memories.  Of course, some trees of the past have eternal significance.  And then, there is a water oak in our yard that has a story all its own and I hope you will stick around and let me share it with you.

Many of you have have a green thumb.  Everything you plant thrives.  Most of my plantings don’t do so well,  but here are a few that miraculously made it!

We had moved into our house and had a little dirt for a yard and no shrubbery.  It was 1979.  A guy we knew had planted some trees and shrubs and had a leftover magnolia he didn’t think would make it so he offered it to us if I’d come pick it up.  I went after it.  Honestly, it was like the tree mentioned in the Bobby Goldsboro tune, “Honey”…”The first day that she planted, it was just a twig”.

Many years ago a friend and I did some deer hunting in Coosa County, Alabama.  While walking out one day I spotted a very small tree with green leaves still hanging on, even in the winter.  It was a holly, and I thought our yard needed one.  I have no idea how I dug it up–a shovel is not a normal part of my hunting gear.  I even forgot I had it for several days but finally dug a small hole and threw it in!

 We had always heard about the fall beauty of the maple tree.  We had no maples on our place so when I found a close-out sale, buy two get one free – I couldn’t resist!  Maples grow slow,  so this Sugar Maple has been out front a long time now.

This water oak is not just another tree.  In the summer of ’98, a heartbreaking tragedy hit close to home.  Our neighbor and long time friends lost their son in an accident, on a Sunday afternoon, a few days before his 16th birthday.

A few weeks later, as summer was fading, I was in front of our house pulling weeds and spreading bark, preparing for cold weather.  As I reached down, I noticed a small plant, maybe 3 inches tall, that I knew was a little oak that had sprang to life that summer.  Instead of pulling it up, my thoughts at that moment caused me to just sit down and reflect on that summer.  I was on the ground and looking out across the front toward my neighbors.  After a few minutes, I located a shovel, dug up the new oak, and took it down into the yard and replanted it.  In my mind I gave the tree a name.  But, I told no one for a very long time.  You see, I was afraid it wouldn’t live, or if it did,  maybe a storm would later blow it over, or a disease would claim it.

I named the tree the “Lance Oak”.  As you can see, the tree is alive and well, and is now 16 years old.  Life is so fragile.  I know it’s only a tree.  And yes, wind may blow it away tomorrow.  But, as I’ve mowed our yard a few hundred times over these last 16 years, there’s probably not  been a single time, while mowing near this tree, that I haven’t thought of Lance and been reminded to pray for my neighbor.

Interesting – today I found this little water oak. About 3 inches tall, and growing not far from the “Lance Oak”.

I close with this. The first trees were in the Garden of Eden. God said all were good for fruit–except one. If you eat of it, you will surely die. He wasn’t kidding. He is God. They ate and we all die. But some time later, there was another tree. A cross was made from it.  An innocent man was crucified on it.  The man was Jesus.  God said, believe on Jesus and trust Him, and you will surely live.  He wasn’t kidding.  He is God and this was His Son.  The Tree of Life.

“He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree,
that we might die to sin and live to righteousness.
By his wounds you have been healed”
‭1 Peter‬ ‭2‬:‭24‬

Tablescape Tuesday: Dining Out

October 28, 2014~ Food & Entertaining, Outdoors, Tablescape Tuesday

“Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
    worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness”
Psalm 29:2

Welcome to our picnic edition of Tablescape Tuesday!  In the Appalachian foothills of northeast Alabama, there is one thing very predictable: our weather is unpredictable!  Sunday was unusually warm and glorious, so we decided to take advantage of one more opportunity to eat outdoors before it turns too cold.  Having shared our traditional after church lunch with family, we decided on a light picnic of fruit and cheese.  I share a fondness of alfresco dining with the French and Italians!  You can see a few alfresco tablescapes that I have done here:

Breakfast Alfresco!
Summer’s Happy Ending
Reservations for Two Under the Arbor

And who knows…with our unpredictable weather we may have Christmas Dinner outdoors!

“I cannot endure to waste anything as precious as autumnal sunshine by staying in the house.” -Nathaniel Hawthorne

*

The tray is an antique oak bed tray that I have had for years and it’s legs are folded down for our picnic.  I bought the quilt at a fundraising auction for Seth’s school quite a few years ago.

The basket holds a special memory.  Seth called one morning and said, “I need a picnic basket.”  I located one in Birmingham.  Later that week, he took the lovely Allison to Little River Canyon with the picnic basket full of goodies. He set up a video camera on a beautiful outcropping of rocks and got down on one knee and popped the question!  You can see wedding photos here: Tablescape Tuesday: The Wedding Edition and  The Wedding Edition Part Two. The lantern, along with three more is always found on the steps of our kitchen porch at Christmas.

Butch’s Taylor guitar that he makes the most beautiful music on!

The late afternoon sunlight cast a pretty light on our little picnic!

Cute sugar cookies from the bakery–and delicious, I might add!

I have enjoyed using the dome stands that I ordered from a catalog??  They fit beautifully in tablescapes!

The last of the season’s zinnias!

A plate of pears showing off their autumnal beauty!

We went casual for our picnic for two–this is how everyday living looks!

A few favorite things:  leopard throw, coffee table book by Betty Lou Phillips, and the needlepoint deer pillow!  A closer look and you can see the mother of pearl dessert knives that I found last week at a bargain!

Had to include this cool pic of the bicycle’s spokes reflected on Butch’s guitar

My favorite singer of all time.  So enjoyed his little mini-concert of some of our favorite John Denver songs!

Katy’s Nana gave me the cute  3-wheel bicycle.  You may see more of it!

People in the South (us included) love old fashioned hoop cheese!

Last year, Butch and I celebrated our fortieth anniversary and Seth gifted us with an afternoon of outdoor photos on our   “piece of heaven in the foothills of the Appalachians”.  This pic was taken where we shared our picnic!

As always, a warm thank you for sharing our everyday living!

Blessings,
Butch and Pam

“The Lord your God is in your midst,
a mighty one who will save;
he will rejoice over you with gladness;
he will quiet you by his love;
he will exult over you with loud singing.”

In Awe of Autumn

October 13, 2014~ Outdoors

“Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few;
therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest’
Matthew 9:37-38

Country living is at its very finest during the autumn season:
…goldenrods in all of their magnificent glory…
…cotton fields bursting in fluffy white balls…
…round hay bales dotting brown pastures…
…smells of distant wood-burning fireplaces…
…our mountains changing into their beautiful autumnal colors…
…pumpkin spice lattes and pumpkin bread on the patio…
…brilliant sunrises and sunsets painted by our Creator…
…whitetail deer roaming at our woods’ edge…
…cool mornings and warm afternoons!

And today, I want to welcome you to my small country porch during our favorite season. You’ve probably heard “back door guests are best”,  but we would like to propose the idea that “side door guests are best”!  I have a formal (well, not really) entry that is known as the front porch that no one ever uses  because eleven years ago, we took our existing garage and made it into our kitchen.  This became the new entrance into our home and is now the favored entry by all our guests. You may remember this from our earlier post “Our Refuge“. As much as I would like for our guests to use our front entry, I welcome them at our kitchen door into the true heart of our home and our everyday living.

Being small with three columns makes decorating a difficult task (no room for rocking chairs, etc.)!

A view through petunias that are still in bloom!

Thanks to my sweetie for the pumpkin topiary!!

Just a little country family!

A small courtyard near our side entry with local quarried stone.  The English bench is draped with a treasured quilt made by my Mother in the 1980’s, and is obviously not left outdoors.

Our Japanese maple is showing signs of changing color!

This is our detached garage, and is often mistaken as a guest house.  Door wreath was a birthday gift from a friend!

Beautiful mums are the perfect colors of autumn!

Oreo loves his spot on the kitchen porch!!

“Blessed be the name of God forever and ever,
to whom belong wisdom and might.
He changes times and seasons;
he removes kings and sets up kings;
he gives wisdom to the wise
and knowledge to those who have understanding;
he reveals deep and hidden things;
he knows what is in the darkness,
and the light dwells with him.
To you, O God of my fathers,
I give thanks and praise,
for you have given me wisdom and might…”
Daniel 2:20-23

Y’all come back now!

With glorious weather, the table next to our woodl With glorious weather, the table next to our woodlands was perfect for teatime! It is Tea on Tuesdays with blogging friends Mary and Kitty. The table is enhanced by views toward the mountain, woodlands, and the large Snowball Viburnum. The verdant rye grass appears as a green carpet that has been spread for Easter! Vintage Fitz and Floyd ‘Herb Garden’ teapots, sugar and creamer, and oval tray are suited for springtime with their embossed bows, vegetables, and words. A bouquet of Kwanzan Cherry blossoms add more spring color to the setting.

I am serving a simple teatime with Earl Grey tea, savory egg salad filled phyllo cups, and sweet vanilla cupcakes with cream cheese icing, and macarons! A favorite cottage rose tablecloth and Essential napkins are by April Cornell.

We are most blessed to celebrate the resurrection of Christ, being the source of new life, yet new life that is eternal. The beauty of this spring will again give way to another autumn in a few months, but the significance of His empty tomb will never change! Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our woodlands and this is the first one of the season, an Easter/Spring table! I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bodily resurrection enables all those who choose to follow Him to have assured victory over our greatest enemy…death!

 I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

A fluffle of moss bunnies hopped up to the picnic table. A ‘Charming’ tablecloth with Mary Lake-Thompson napkins and Williams Sonoma enchanting ‘Famille Rose’ bunny plates!

I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition of Tea on Tuesdays. My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. As an April Cornell Brand Ambassador, I was gifted these gorgeous linens! I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.

I am serving my favorite, Earl Gray tea, from an Eileen’s Reserve teapot. Teacups by Grace Teaware and vintage Rose Chintz salad plates by Johnson Brothers add more floral patterns to the mix. Japanese Magnolia blooms were cut from my garden and placed in a lilypad teapot!

After the gray and cloudy days, I needed a dose of color and decided to set a colorful citrus themed brunch! Using a bird gold and pewter stand, I mixed a citrus medley of lemons, oranges, and limes with pink and white carnations as the centerpiece. The table is highlighted with blue and white dishware. Fresh squeezed orange juice, French-pressed coffee and sweet treats of lemon poppyseed muffins, lemon cake with lemon icing, and lemon pastries are perfect for a small brunch.
