 If you have been to any Southern college campus, you will find that they are beautiful with many historic buildings and note-worthy architecture!  Here in our great state of Alabama, the campuses are no exception!  I thought that it would be fun and interesting to visit some of our institutions of higher learning for Simple + Southern Sundays!  Of course, we won’t be able to visit all 41 of the four year college campuses in the state, but we will take you to a few in the coming weeks!  It only seems appropriate that we would make Alabama’s first public college, established in 1831, our first stop.  And since we have an investment with Seth attending, let’s take a short walking tour of the University of Alabama! Denny Chimes is located in the heart of University of Alabama’s campus.  It was built in 1929, when George Denney was president.  It was under his name that the university gained notability, and it serves as a monument to declare UA as the first university in Alabama!  You can hear the melodies of Denny Chimes all around campus! Bibb Graves Hall was built in 1929 and is the College of Education.  You will notice an inscription on the top that reads “Religion, morality, and knowledge being necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of education shall forever be encouraged.”
These words were a part of Alabama’s first constitution.
 Paul W. Bryant Hall consists of two parts: The Academic Center which is home to Athletic Student Services and a Residence Hall. The Bryant Sports Grill is between the two of them.   The President’s Mansion sits directly across the street from Denny Chimes and is the oldest and most historical building on campus.  It is one of the few buildings that survived the burning of the campus in 1865.  You can read more about the burning of the campus here.  Carmichael Hall is the home of the College of Education’s Dean’s office and was built in 1925.
Named after University of Alabama trustee emeritus John T. Oliver Jr, Oliver-Barnard Hall was built in 1889.  Here you will find classrooms, professors’ offices, and a computer lab for students.   Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library was constructed in 1939 and is the main library on campus. It takes its name after the wife of the University’s 8th president, Confederate General Josiah Gorgas.  Amelia Gayle Gorgas served as librarian. On game day, this is where you can find the Million Dollar Band playing the fight song while “Big Al” dances away on the steps! Built in 1884, Clark Hall was named after the 1800’s University Trustee Willis G. Clark.  It houses the Dean of Arts and Sciences Office and the Department of Theatre and Dance’s dance studio. The bronze statue of Alabama’s legendary coach, Paul “Bear” Bryant, who led The Crimson Tide to six national championships, is one of five bronze statues honoring the coaches who led Alabama to national championships!  When Bryant retired in 1982, he held the record for most wins as head coach in collegiate football history with 323 wins!  The “Bear” was known for his trademark black and white houndstooth hat and fans continue to wear the pattern to honor the great coach! Bryant-Denney Stadium opened in 1929!  It has a seating capacity of 101,821!  My Daddy is the most loyal Crimson Tide fan I know!  I grew up listening to Alabama football on the radio and watching the occasional TV broadcasts (remember this was the 1960’s) every Saturday during autumn.  I am still a fan and always will be!  But, we are a house divided, Butch roots for the Auburn Tigers! Nick Saban has led the Crimson Tide as head coach since the 2007 season!  They have won three national championships under his leadership! Skylar says “Roll Tide!”  We train ’em young! The scene on Saturday, September 12th, as the Crimson Tide ran onto the field.  They defeated the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders 37 – 10!  The University of Alabama has won fifteen national championships in football, more than any other SEC school!  From 2009 – 2012 our state held the national title with Auburn winning in 2010 and Bama winning the other three years.  No other state has ever done that!
