California Dreamin (on such a winter’s day!)

January 25, 2016~ Travel

“Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you, and therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you.  For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him”
Isaiah 30:18

Here at Everyday Living, you have been on lots of trips with us!  We’ve taken you halfway across the world, but it’s not necessary to travel out of the country to see such scenery-we do have some of the most beautiful places right here in the good ole’ US of A!  The drive down the Pacific Coast Highway from Monterey to San Simeon is like no other!  Butch and I flew into San Francisco and rented a car and headed to Monterey where we stayed for three days as we enjoyed driving along the Pacific Ocean, Pebble Beach, Carmel, and Big Sur.  We then drove back to San Francisco for a couple of days before flying to sweet home Alabama!  The weather was beautiful and we had very little fog.  October is a perfect time to go!  Since Northeast Alabama has experienced below freezing temps and even a “dusting” of snow this past weekend, we thought it might be fun to re-visit sunny California on this winter’s day!

Monterey is on the central coast of California.  Cannery Row is the waterfront street and was the site of a number of sardine canning factories.  It was here that the setting of John Steinbeck’s novel Cannery Row took place!

The crashing waves on the rocks are magnificent!

The Pacific coast is so different than our more familiar Gulf Coast.  Each one has its own beauty!

The Lone Cypress, standing on a granite hillside off California’s scenic 17 Mile Drive in Pebble Beach, is said to be the most photographed tree in North America.  It is possibly as old as 250 years and has been scarred by fire.

More scenery along the 17 Mile Drive

The golf is legendary at Pebble Beach

The lodge envelopes the 18th green of the Pebble Beach Golf Links, one of the most exciting closing holes in golf.  Love the ocean view from the entrance!

To enjoy the scenery along the Pacific Coast Highway, you must rent a convertible!

Big Sur offers stunning views!  Many classify Big Sur as the segment of California State Route 1 from Carmel south to San Simeon

Butch and I had to take a short hike to see these magnificent rock formations in the Pacific!

The water is very cold in comparison to the warm waters of the Gulf!

Elephant seals come ashore and form colonies for only a few months of each year to give birth, breed, and molt.

The Hearst Castle built by William Randolph Hearst is a prominent landmark in San Simeon along Highway 1

This massive assembly room in the castle is adorned with historic Renaissance and Baroque tapestries and masterpieces of neoclassical sculptures

The expansive gardens!

Spectacular Neptune Pool with its colonnades and statues provided the setting for lavish parties for Mr. Hearst and his guests!

The meticulously detailed indoor Roman Pool was modeled after ancient Roman baths. It is tiled from ceiling to floor, and features copies of eight ancient Roman marble statues.

Chateau Julien in Carmel

We have been fans of John Denver since we were married in 1973.  Butch has been told more times than we could count that he sounds just like him singing!  It was out from these rocks that his experimental airplane crashed in 1997.

“This is my autograph, here in the songs that I sing.  Here in my cry and my laugh, here in the love that I bring.  To be always with you and you always with me.”
 John Denver

We enjoy our time spent together!

“Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea,
the Lord on high is mighty!”

Let’s Get Social!

January 18, 2016~ Decorating, Faith, Food & Entertaining, Recipes, Travel

“Forever, O Lord, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens.”
‭‭Psalm‬ ‭119:89‬ ‭

When it comes to social media, I was late to the party. It took me a while to warm up to the idea of getting on Facebook, I’ve only been on Instagram two years, I started blogging in 2014, and I have a Twitter that I hardly check.  I think social media can get a bad rap, and rightly so…but it’s not all bad.  Actually, I’ve really grown to love one…and that one is Instagram.

To me, Instagram has become a magazine of sorts.  I love to relax and “thumb” through pictures posted by the 600+ people that I follow.   And the content they post runs the gamut.  On any given day as I look through my feed, I see everything from home decor to beautiful travel destinations to make-your-mouth-water food to pigs dressed up as Alabama fans…yep, you read that right!  Today I want to share some of my favorite Instagram users with you…and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do everyday!

You can follow my Instagram here.

Each photo is linked to their Instagram account for easy following!

Exploring Edinburgh

January 11, 2016~ Travel

““You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭5:14‬ ‭

Bagpipes…kilts…shortbread…lochs…tartan…castles are a few things that come to mind when I think of Scotland!  But there is so much more to offer!  We had never been to Scotland and we loved the beautiful scenery and the warm Scottish people!  Our first stop was Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland!

The Palace of Holyroodhouse is the official residence of the British Monarch in Scotland.  The palace as it appears today was built between 1671 and 1678 and stands at the bottom of the Royal Mile.  The Queen spends one week at Holyrood in summer.

The Historic Apartments at the Palace were once the home of the ill-fated Mary, Queen of Scots.  We toured the State Apartments that are used for state and official entertaining and then climbed a steep spiral staircase to view the 16th century Historic Apartments.  Photography was not allowed inside the palace.

Holyrood Abbey has been ruined since the 18th century.  The remaining walls lie adjacent to the palace.  The surviving medieval nave was built around 1230.

An exterior view of the Abbey’s south wall!

The oldest part built before 1200 is the north wall with its tall single-lancet windows with intersecting arcading below.

Beautiful gardens surrounded the Palace and the Abbey.  Doesn’t it make you wonder what the everyday living was like for those who lived in these places long ago?!

Walking down the Royal Mile in the Old Town with Edinburgh Castle at the top and Holyroodhouse at the bottom of the 1.5 miles!

The bagpiper didn’t offer a tip to have his picture made with me!

Tourists line the Royal Mile with its shops, pubs, and  interesting sites!

Red doors will always get my attention!

Butch can’t resist a photo opp of street performers!

The hanging flower baskets were everywhere and with the wet climate they were thriving!

 Tartan clad bagpiper

The Tron Kirk is a familiar landmark on the Royal Mile. It is a former principal parish church built in the 1600’s and closed as a church in 1952.

St. Giles Cathedral dates from the late 14th century.  Its distinctive crown steeple is a prominent feature of the Edinburgh skyline.  John Knox was chosen minister in 1559.

At the top of the Royal Mile sits Edinburgh Castle!  A national treasure, the castle was built over centuries beginning in 1130.  This intriguing castle is where Mary, Queen of Scots gave birth in 1566 to the future King James I of England.  The Scottish Crown Jewels are housed in the 15th century Old Royal Palace, which we found fascinating.  No pictures were allowed of the Crown Jewels.

In what we might call an inner courtyard, a number of the castles main structures were open to the public. This is the Scottish War Memorial. The Great Hall and the entrance to view the Crown Jewels are also nearby.

An example of the fortification at the castle. Being built high on a hill also seems to have been strategic in being able to defend castles. Edinburgh Castle is high on a volcanic rocky crag.

The interior of St. Margaret’s Chapel in Edinburgh Castle is the oldest surviving building in Edinburgh, Scotland.  It was constructed in the 12th century.

One of the five stained glass windows that were made in 1922.  This one illustrates William Wallace, a national hero and Scottish knight who fought and died to free Scotland from English rule.  A well-known account of Wallace’e life is presented in the Film “Brave Heart”.

The Great Hall was completed in 1511 and stands at the heart of the castle.  Tourists completely filled the 94 foot length of the hall, so we missed an opportunity for a great photo!

Some of the items on display in the Great Hall. I’m wondering if walking around in one of these “suits” all day would eliminate the need for a gym membership.

The Governors House was completed in 1817, and  is all that remains of the Calton Gaol, once the largest prison in Scotland. This house was used by Commissioners who “governed” the prison. The Gaol closed in 1927 and all was demolished in 1937 with the exception of this house.

Thank you for walking the Royal Mile with us!

Happy Wednesday! I set a table next to our woodlan Happy Wednesday! I set a table next to our woodlands in memory of my beautiful Mother who was a lovely example of a Proverbs 31 woman. Mother had the gift of hospitality and shared it with everyone. Karl Rosenfield peonies from my garden fill a treasured keepsake pitcher handed down from my grandmother! A beautiful floral April Cornell ‘Lillianna’ tablecloth and Famille Rose salad plates elevate the status of the old picnic table next to our woodlands. I have collected bejeweled enamel trinket boxes for many years and shared a few on the table for whimsy and fun. For memories of my Mother, click the link in my profile.

With glorious weather, the table next to our woodl With glorious weather, the table next to our woodlands was perfect for teatime! It is Tea on Tuesdays with blogging friends Mary and Kitty. The table is enhanced by views toward the mountain, woodlands, and the large Snowball Viburnum. The verdant rye grass appears as a green carpet that has been spread for Easter! Vintage Fitz and Floyd ‘Herb Garden’ teapots, sugar and creamer, and oval tray are suited for springtime with their embossed bows, vegetables, and words. A bouquet of Kwanzan Cherry blossoms add more spring color to the setting.

I am serving a simple teatime with Earl Grey tea, savory egg salad filled phyllo cups, and sweet vanilla cupcakes with cream cheese icing, and macarons! A favorite cottage rose tablecloth and Essential napkins are by April Cornell.

We are most blessed to celebrate the resurrection of Christ, being the source of new life, yet new life that is eternal. The beauty of this spring will again give way to another autumn in a few months, but the significance of His empty tomb will never change! Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our woodlands and this is the first one of the season, an Easter/Spring table! I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bodily resurrection enables all those who choose to follow Him to have assured victory over our greatest enemy…death!

I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

A fluffle of moss bunnies hopped up to the picnic table. A ‘Charming’ tablecloth with Mary Lake-Thompson napkins and Williams Sonoma enchanting ‘Famille Rose’ bunny plates!

I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

For more of my Daddy’s story, click the link in my bio.

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition of Tea on Tuesdays. My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. As an April Cornell Brand Ambassador, I was gifted these gorgeous linens! I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.

I am serving my favorite, Earl Gray tea, from an Eileen’s Reserve teapot. Teacups by Grace Teaware and vintage Rose Chintz salad plates by Johnson Brothers add more floral patterns to the mix. Japanese Magnolia blooms were cut from my garden and placed in a lilypad teapot!

Happy first Monday of February! After so many cold Happy first Monday of February! After so many cold days, we are experiencing a tease of spring with a 73 degree day that is forecast. After the gray and cloudy days, I needed a dose of color and decided to set a colorful citrus themed brunch! Using a bird gold and pewter stand, I mixed a citrus medley of lemons, oranges, and limes with pink and white carnations as the centerpiece. The table is highlighted with blue and white dishware. Fresh squeezed orange juice, French-pressed coffee and sweet treats of lemon poppyseed muffins, lemon cake with lemon icing, and lemon pastries are perfect for a small brunch. A faux lemon topiary belonged to my beloved Mother and seemed a perfect addition to a citrus-themed table!
