“Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves”
Philippians 2:3

When we started blogging almost 18 months ago, we had no idea what we were getting into.  All I knew was that we wanted to share our everyday living with you through the things we love!  I knew that probably meant tablescapes, the occasional travel post, and maybe a music post here and there.  The next thing I knew, I was blogging four times a week, meeting new blogging friends, and I had found a creative outlet that would become both my new favorite hobby and a journal of sorts for me and my family!

Last week, I shared the Top 5 Tablescapes of 2015 and The Top Ten Posts of 2015, and there is no doubt that my love for creating warm and inviting spaces in our home is one of the main themes here at Everyday Living. But, my favorites are those that might not receive the most views or comments…they are the stories and pictures that are dearest to my heart!  They are the ones that are linked to the sweetest memories, the story of how the post evolved, and the ones that remind me of the goodness of God in our everyday living.

Come along with me while I reminisce on the year in blogging as I share my favorite 7 posts of 2015!  Click on the picture to go to the original post.

7.  Simple + Southern Sunday No. 54

The Sunday post is usually our week in photos.  However, this particular one was a day in photos…how I requested to spend my birthday!

6.  The Perfect Blend

An afternoon of conversation, lattes, and sweet nibbles provided “the perfect blend”!  IMG_3863

5.  That Time I Was A Professor

What an amazing afternoon spent teaching the art of tablescaping to 37 ladies at the University of Alabama, Gadsden Center!

4.  A Mid-Summer’s Evening

Butch bought this fun, pagoda-style umbrella, so it demanded, of course, another alfresco dinner in the garden …while enjoying the beauty of God’s creation and the blessings He has provided!  A perfect evening!

3.  Zoom In!

We love to travel and we “zoomed in” on some of our favorite places around the globe!

2.  Sentimental Journey

Sharing my journey of music that has spanned three generations was a joy!

1. Just Like Mama Made

A precious childhood memory of a sweet and salty snack that I still enjoy!IMG_3856  IMG_3853  IMG_3854 As you can see, 2015 was a fun year in blogging for me!  I cant wait to see what 2016 holds!  Thank you, our faithful readers!Collage side Linking with Pieced Pastimes, Silver Pennies, Life on Lakeshore Drive, Thoughts From Alice, Coastal Charm, My Uncommon Slice of Suburbia, Dwellings-Heart of Your Home, Savvy Southern Style, Ivy and Elephants, French Country Cottage, From My Front Porch To Yours, Stone Gable, Confessions of a Plate Addict, Worthing Court, Between Naps on the Porch, Cedar Hill Farmhouse, A Stroll Thru Life, The Charm of Home, Cornerstone Confessions, A Delightsome Life, Imparting Grace, Posed Perfection, Katherines Corner, Rooted In Thyme, Share Your Cup, The Enchanting Rose, 21 Rosemary Lane, Northern Nesting, Cozy Little House, Rattlebridge Farm, Rustic & Refined

Top Ten Posts Of 2015

December 31, 2015~ Christmas, Decorating, Holidays, Travel

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
Psalm 91:1

Lose weight.  Exercise more.  Declutter.  Simplify.  Manage finances more wisely. Paint that hallway that has needed it for years.  Travel more.  Be more intentional.  Maybe some of these have been your thoughts as we approach a brand new year.  2016 will bring a clean slate…and what better time to start than January 1?

Butch and I have been discussing some new plans and goals for the year!  In addition to getting our eating and exercising back on track, we have been thinking a river cruise in Europe, minor remodeling at our house, and more landscaping!  While these things are important, they are not priority.

What about the most important area, our spiritual life?  Have we planned our life of prayer and devotion to God’s Word?  It is true that we do not know what 2016 will hold for any of us, but I know this one thing:  if we trust in the very capable and trustworthy hands of God the Father, we will be safe.  When the storms rage, we can be confident that God’s plan will not be thwarted, and his love will never fail us.Collage1As we take a look at our top ten posts of the year, we would like to thank you, our readers, for joining us in 2015. You have greatly blessed us with your comments and friendship!  Since we started blogging, our hearts have been to honor God in our everyday living…whether that be traveling, cooking, gardening, and even tablescaping.  Our lives are His, and we pray that He is at the center of your 2016!

Christmas Time In The (New York) City

December 18, 2015~ Christmas, Holidays, Travel

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”
Luke 2:14

We are welcoming Katy back to the blog today…as we continue to live vicariously through her fun trip last weekend!

Here she is…

We’re back in New York City!  Thanks for taking the time to read my post on Wednesday!  I hope you were able to catch a little of the Christmas spirit that is in NYC at this time of year! I’ve taken you down Fifth Avenue and shown you some of the windows there, so today, let’s just roam around other parts of New York City!

And maybe we can catch The Rockettes while we are en route!

Everywhere you look, there are gigantic Christmas trees!  This one was in the public library!

This guy was even decked out for Christmas!

As you can see in front of Macy’s on 34th Street, there were people everywhere!!

They had a Peanuts theme in honor of the 50th anniversary of “It’s a Charlie Brown Christmas!”

The Santa Snoopys were the cutest!

As you walked around, the windows progressively walked you through the movie…including Lucy’s well-known psychiatric booth!

*
The Charlie Brown Christmas tree!

“That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown!”

Macy’s side windows were a “Yes, Virginia there is a Santa Claus” theme from the 1897 publication of the New York Sun.

“Yes, Virginia” has sparked letter writing campaigns at Macy’s across the nation!

*
*
Here you can see some of the characters reading the publication’s response to her question “Is there a Santa Claus?”

Central Park was just a few blocks from the hotel, where festive carriages were waiting!

My nephew, Hunter and me ice skating at Wollman Rink in Central Park.  This was taken about 2 minutes before I fell and came home with a nice elbow bruise as a souvenir!

And of course I had to make my way over to The Plaza Hotel, where the wreaths are gigantic…

…and the tree stands in all of its glory!

 So beautiful!

The lights at Rockefeller Center were so festive!

Now on to my favorite part of the trip…The Radio City Christmas Spectacular!

This was my first time seeing The Rockettes!

t
Everything inside of Radio City Music Hall ushers in Christmas…even the chandelier that resembles a Christmas tree!

It’s almost showtime!

The iconic toy solider dance…they must put in hours upon hours of practicing this routine…it was flawless!

One of the last scenes is a live nativity…complete with sheep, donkeys, and even a camel!  They read scripture and performed “Hark the Herald Angels Sing!”…such a powerful moment!  One of the lines in the show was “the greatest gift is not the one you go looking for, it’s the one that finds you”, and how true is that!  The greatest gift ever given, Jesus, came to earth to seek and save us, the lost and sinful world.

Giant wreath at the New York Stock Exchange

Yummy nutella and strawberry waffle from Wafels and Dinges at Bryant Park…it was as delicious at it looks!

Bergdorf Goodman partnered with Swarovski this year for their holiday windows and the theme was “Brilliant”!

Fun fact: the ball that drops on New Years Eve in Times Square is made of Swarovski crystal, so you can imagine the bling in these windows!

I had heard all about looking at Christmas windows in NYC, but didn’t understand the hype until I made this trip!

This was definitely one of my favorite trips!  How about you…have you been to NYC at Christmas time?   What was your favorite memory?

Happy Wednesday! I set a table next to our woodlan Happy Wednesday! I set a table next to our woodlands in memory of my beautiful Mother who was a lovely example of a Proverbs 31 woman. Mother had the gift of hospitality and shared it with everyone. Karl Rosenfield peonies from my garden fill a treasured keepsake pitcher handed down from my grandmother! A beautiful floral April Cornell ‘Lillianna’ tablecloth and Famille Rose salad plates elevate the status of the old picnic table next to our woodlands. I have collected bejeweled enamel trinket boxes for many years and shared a few on the table for whimsy and fun. For memories of my Mother, click the link in my profile.

With glorious weather, the table next to our woodl With glorious weather, the table next to our woodlands was perfect for teatime! It is Tea on Tuesdays with blogging friends Mary and Kitty. The table is enhanced by views toward the mountain, woodlands, and the large Snowball Viburnum. The verdant rye grass appears as a green carpet that has been spread for Easter! Vintage Fitz and Floyd ‘Herb Garden’ teapots, sugar and creamer, and oval tray are suited for springtime with their embossed bows, vegetables, and words. A bouquet of Kwanzan Cherry blossoms add more spring color to the setting.

I am serving a simple teatime with Earl Grey tea, savory egg salad filled phyllo cups, and sweet vanilla cupcakes with cream cheese icing, and macarons! A favorite cottage rose tablecloth and Essential napkins are by April Cornell.

We are most blessed to celebrate the resurrection of Christ, being the source of new life, yet new life that is eternal. The beauty of this spring will again give way to another autumn in a few months, but the significance of His empty tomb will never change! Wishing you a blessed Holy Week ✝️ Click the link in my bio to view the blog!

Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our woodlands and this is the first one of the season, an Easter/Spring table! I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bodily resurrection enables all those who choose to follow Him to have assured victory over our greatest enemy…death!

I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

A fluffle of moss bunnies hopped up to the picnic table. A ‘Charming’ tablecloth with Mary Lake-Thompson napkins and Williams Sonoma enchanting ‘Famille Rose’ bunny plates!

I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition of Tea on Tuesdays. My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. As an April Cornell Brand Ambassador, I was gifted these gorgeous linens! I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.

I am serving my favorite, Earl Gray tea, from an Eileen’s Reserve teapot. Teacups by Grace Teaware and vintage Rose Chintz salad plates by Johnson Brothers add more floral patterns to the mix. Japanese Magnolia blooms were cut from my garden and placed in a lilypad teapot!

Happy first Monday of February! After so many cold Happy first Monday of February! After so many cold days, we are experiencing a tease of spring with a 73 degree day that is forecast. After the gray and cloudy days, I needed a dose of color and decided to set a colorful citrus themed brunch! Using a bird gold and pewter stand, I mixed a citrus medley of lemons, oranges, and limes with pink and white carnations as the centerpiece. The table is highlighted with blue and white dishware. Fresh squeezed orange juice, French-pressed coffee and sweet treats of lemon poppyseed muffins, lemon cake with lemon icing, and lemon pastries are perfect for a small brunch. A faux lemon topiary belonged to my beloved Mother and seemed a perfect addition to a citrus-themed table!
