Christmas Time In The (New York) City

December 18, 2015~ Christmas, Holidays, Travel

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”
Luke 2:14

We are welcoming Katy back to the blog today…as we continue to live vicariously through her fun trip last weekend!

Here she is…

We’re back in New York City!  Thanks for taking the time to read my post on Wednesday!  I hope you were able to catch a little of the Christmas spirit that is in NYC at this time of year! I’ve taken you down Fifth Avenue and shown you some of the windows there, so today, let’s just roam around other parts of New York City!

And maybe we can catch The Rockettes while we are en route!

Everywhere you look, there are gigantic Christmas trees!  This one was in the public library!

This guy was even decked out for Christmas!

As you can see in front of Macy’s on 34th Street, there were people everywhere!!

They had a Peanuts theme in honor of the 50th anniversary of “It’s a Charlie Brown Christmas!”

The Santa Snoopys were the cutest!

As you walked around, the windows progressively walked you through the movie…including Lucy’s well-known psychiatric booth!

*
The Charlie Brown Christmas tree!

“That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown!”

Macy’s side windows were a “Yes, Virginia there is a Santa Claus” theme from the 1897 publication of the New York Sun.

“Yes, Virginia” has sparked letter writing campaigns at Macy’s across the nation!

*
*
Here you can see some of the characters reading the publication’s response to her question “Is there a Santa Claus?”

Central Park was just a few blocks from the hotel, where festive carriages were waiting!

My nephew, Hunter and me ice skating at Wollman Rink in Central Park.  This was taken about 2 minutes before I fell and came home with a nice elbow bruise as a souvenir!

And of course I had to make my way over to The Plaza Hotel, where the wreaths are gigantic…

…and the tree stands in all of its glory!

 So beautiful!

The lights at Rockefeller Center were so festive!

Now on to my favorite part of the trip…The Radio City Christmas Spectacular!

This was my first time seeing The Rockettes!

t
Everything inside of Radio City Music Hall ushers in Christmas…even the chandelier that resembles a Christmas tree!

It’s almost showtime!

The iconic toy solider dance…they must put in hours upon hours of practicing this routine…it was flawless!

One of the last scenes is a live nativity…complete with sheep, donkeys, and even a camel!  They read scripture and performed “Hark the Herald Angels Sing!”…such a powerful moment!  One of the lines in the show was “the greatest gift is not the one you go looking for, it’s the one that finds you”, and how true is that!  The greatest gift ever given, Jesus, came to earth to seek and save us, the lost and sinful world.

Giant wreath at the New York Stock Exchange

Yummy nutella and strawberry waffle from Wafels and Dinges at Bryant Park…it was as delicious at it looks!

Bergdorf Goodman partnered with Swarovski this year for their holiday windows and the theme was “Brilliant”!

Fun fact: the ball that drops on New Years Eve in Times Square is made of Swarovski crystal, so you can imagine the bling in these windows!

I had heard all about looking at Christmas windows in NYC, but didn’t understand the hype until I made this trip!

This was definitely one of my favorite trips!  How about you…have you been to NYC at Christmas time?   What was your favorite memory?

City Sidewalks, Busy Sidewalks…of NYC

December 16, 2015~ Christmas, Holidays, Travel

“All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came to be, declares the Lord”
Isaiah 66:2a

One of my favorite trips to take is New York City at Christmas!  It didn’t work out for Butch and me to go this year, but our chosen daughter, Katy went and I was able to experience it through her eyes and camera lens!  I have asked her to share all about her trip with us today!

So here’s Katy…

I’ve always loved Christmas carols and I am “that girl” that admittedly starts listening to holiday stations on Pandora several weeks before Thanksgiving.  But the words “City sidewalks, busy sidewalks” took on a whole new meaning for me this past weekend!  I (along with several thousand of my “closest” friends) went to New York City for a few days for the experience I had only seen in photos!

A few things probably come to mind when you think NYC at Christmas…the Rockefeller tree, ice skating in Central Park, breathtaking window displays, and the ever-so-popular Rockettes…all of which I was able to do in four short days!  It truly was a magical experience and I am excited that Pam asked me to share these few days with you!  The weather was perfect, although not very Christmas-y…it was in the 60’s!  But, I walked more miles than I could’ve imagined and it was worth every step!

Come with me…let’s take a walk down Fifth Avenue in New York City!

The iconic Rockefeller tree!  It truly is magical…

…even in the daytime!

Ice skating in front of the tree!  The line was wrapped completely around the block!

These larger-than-life drummers stood on the corners around the tree.

You talk about stop-you-in-your-tracks!  Saks Fifth Avenue had the most magical store front display!

At night, the light show would start every few minutes…the Christmas spirit was alive and well on Fifth Avenue!

The window displays were themed “A Winter Palace”.
Think: adult version of “Frozen”!

The Icy Eiffel Tower

There was a sea of people (including me) “ooh-ing” and aah-ing” at these displays!

*

The Great Barrier Reef

A look at Saks from underneath the tree at Rockefeller Center!

I wish the pictures could do it justice!  Amazing!

And then there’s that Tiffany blue…

Who can stand in front of windows at Tiffany’s and not think Audrey Hepburn?!

The window displays were small, but the diamonds certainly weren’t!

I had to snap this photo of the deer with antlers and chandeliers…it’s everyday living at Tiffany’s!

Lord & Taylor’s window theme was “Our Favorite Things”.  This was the Advent calendar mansion that had opening doors revealing different winter scenes!

The Sweet Shoppe
I’m with you, Lord & Taylor…I love sweets too!

Animated gingerbread men carrying a gingerbread house

I think I stopped and watched this cuckoo clock for ten minutes…it was beautiful!

I’ve never seen such detail!

The window displays brought out the kid in me…I could’ve stopped and gazed in for hours!

On Sunday, I ventured up to the east side of Central Park…and found Laudree…THE place for macarons!

How can you possibly make a decision between such pretty desserts?!

Endless options of flavors!

I am not sure what the “perfect” macaron is supposed to look or taste like, but I think this is it!  Delicious!!

And the windows were beautiful there, too!

Standing on the Brooklyn Bridge!

Thanks for taking the time to read all about my trip to NYC!  But there’s more…and I will be sharing the rest with you on Friday!

Boone, Beliefs, and Berea

October 26, 2015~ Travel

“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;”
‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭13:4-5‬ ‭
I mentioned last week in October’s Edition of Pam-perings that one of my favorite things, now that I am basically retired, is to tag along with Butch on his business trips.  His job requires travel all over the southeast, so he may have to go to a bigger city or a smaller, more rural town.  I am not picky about the destination because being with him is what it’s all about!  Last Monday and Tuesday, we hit the road for Berea, Kentucky and the surrounding area.  I had heard of Berea College and Boone Tavern, the historic hotel where we stayed, but knew little else.  One thing I have learned in our travels: every place has something unique to its own.  No matter the population or popularity, there is something interesting to be learned about every place on the map!  And Berea was no exception.  I did a little research before our road trip and became fascinated by what I learned about this one-of-a-kind college town!  Berea, in scripture, was a place that was known to be very welcoming to all people. And this holds true today in Berea, Kentucky.  It is home to a thriving art community of weavers, glass workers, potters, painters, musicians, wood workers, and many more artisans.  We visited the Kentucky Artisan Center where outstanding arts and crafts made in Berea and throughout Kentucky are for sale.  But what is even more interesting than all of the arts and crafts is that Berea College provides all students with full tuition scholarships…earned by working jobs provided by the college.  It was a fun little road trip with good food, lots of history, beautiful hand-made crafts, and pretty scenery!

Boone Tavern has been in continuous operation since 1909.  It was built as a guesthouse for Berea College at the suggestion of Nellie Frost, the wife of the college president. After receiving 300 guests one summer…the idea for a college guest house was born!  Boone Tavern is named for its location on the Daniel Boone Trail, which ran from North Carolina to Kentucky in 1775. The “Tavern” portion of the name is derived from the historic definition that refers to a public inn for travelers. An $11 million “green” renovation in 2009 ensured  efficiency and comfort without infringing on the historic beauty of the hotel.  The Tavern was built with bricks manufactured by students in the college’s brickyard and was constructed by the college’s woodwork department at a total cost of $20,000. Boone Tavern is owned by Berea College.  Butch and I took a walking tour of the beautiful Berea College Campus.  The school was founded in 1855 and began as a one-room schoolhouse that served as a church on Sundays.  Strong beliefs in an impartial love toward all has always shaped the institution’s culture and programs and is reflected in the college’s motto, “God has made of one blood all peoples of the earth.” Berea College admitted both black and white students making it the first non-segregated, coeducational college in the South.  Berea was founded by Protestant Christians.  It maintains a Christian identity separate from any particular denomination.Berea has a mandatory student work program in which all students work 10 or more hours per week in campus and service jobs.
Some of the work-study has helped to extend and support practice of traditional crafts from the Appalachian region!
Admission to the college is granted only to students who need financial assistance.  The majority of the incoming class is drawn from the Appalachian region of the South and about 8% are international students.
Of course, I found some things that I had to bring home…a hand-blown glass bowl, an interesting wood-crafted bowl, and napkin rings…all of which you will see on a future blog post!
Berea has one of the largest financial reserves of any American college. Fine dining has brought Boone Tavern much of its international acclaim!  The menu offers a blend of traditional and creative southern cuisine.  Spoonbread is a signature item generously served.  The Boone Tavern recipe is included at the bottom.  A seared Kentucky raised rib chop, with Kentucky Barrel Ale barbecue sauce, roasted jalapeño corn cakes, and braised greens was my fare for the evening, and delicious, I might add!  The restaurant uses locally grown ingredients, some of which are grown by the students in the College’s gardens and greenhouses.

Boone Tavern Famous Spoonbread
3 cups milk
1 1/4 cups white cornmeal
3 eggs
2 tablespoons butter
1 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt

Stir meal into rapidly boiling milk.  Cook until very thick, stirring constantly.  Remove from heat and allow to cool.  The mixture will be very stiff.  Add well-beaten eggs, salt, baking powder, and melted butter.  Beat with an electric mixer for 15 minutes.  Pour into well-greased pan and bake for 20-30 minutes at 375 degrees. Serve from pan by spoonful with butter.

Thank you all for reading and commenting!  I hope you learned something about the small college town of Berea, Kentucky!  What are some of your favorite travel experiences?  I would love to hear from you!

Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of th Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of the year! I am sharing this merry table that was inspired by @april.cornell Victorian Christmas tablecloth! As an April Cornell brand ambassador I received the beautiful tablecloth and lovely Essential blue napkins. The red and white checkered top lends itself to classic casual elegance. The lovely snowy village on the border of the cloth came to life with a couple of snowy wood slice chargers that are topped with tiny little village shops that my beloved Mother gave me many years ago. They hold a special place in my heart. The salad plates depict Christmas Village scenes and complement the cloth. An easy centerpiece of fresh fruit is nestled atop fresh greens and placed in a Natale bowl by @arteitalicacrownlinen I have joined 17 table stylists for a Christmas Tablescape Blog Hop. Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morn Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morning Blooms. The theme for the July edition is Summer Living! Living in the country, our summer days are filled with outdoor chores, one of which is gardening! My ‘Little Lamb’ panicled hydrangeas are in full bloom and are the star of my simple table setting! The basket holding the hydrangeas is very sentimental. It belonged to my beloved Mother who kept her journals and devotional books in the basket. I often picked up the books and journals to read while visiting my sweet Daddy. Since my Daddy passed away in March, my brother and I are cleaning out our parents home. I just knew the basket was coming home with me! My precious Mother would have loved seeing it filled with flowers! A vintage tablecloth, @april.cornell ‘Eden’ napkins, Portmeirion ‘Botanic Garden’ dinner plates and stemware from Tuesday Morning (many years ago) complete the table!

Happy July! 2025 is half over, and where did it go Happy July! 2025 is half over, and where did it go? I am celebrating the red, white, and blue with a table set in the garden with a couple of treats and sweet iced tea for this hot summer day. Precious memories are attached to the checked tablecloth. My beloved Mother prepared Sunday lunch every week until she passed away. Each Sunday was a feast comparable to Thanksgiving. During the summer months, she often used this checked cloth. More delicious meals than I could count have been served on this cloth!

Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer table is in my garden. I decided the table should be simple to allow the hydrangeas to be the star! I always love sharing a ‘special something’ on a table setting that is sentimental and has wonderful memories attached like the majolica pitcher that belonged to my beloved Mother. A beautiful blue and white tablecloth by @april.cornell for @victoriamagazine was a surprise from my sweet husband and also included the ‘blue roses’ tea set which was a part of the limited edition when it was first introduced a few years ago. The Sur La Table floral-patterned earthenware was inspired by London’s Chelsea Flower Show in collaboration with artist, April Cornell. Vintage hobnail milk glass stemware was purchased at the Longest Yard Sale. Sometimes I just enjoy a simple table!

Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our woodlands and this is the first one of the season, an Easter/Spring table! I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bodily resurrection enables all those who choose to follow Him to have assured victory over our greatest enemy…death!

I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition of Tea on Tuesdays. My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. As an April Cornell Brand Ambassador, I was gifted these gorgeous linens! I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.

I am serving my favorite, Earl Gray tea, from an Eileen’s Reserve teapot. Teacups by Grace Teaware and vintage Rose Chintz salad plates by Johnson Brothers add more floral patterns to the mix. Japanese Magnolia blooms were cut from my garden and placed in a lilypad teapot!
