Expectations-Music and Much More

October 1, 2015~ Music, Travel

“And God said, ‘Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.’ And it was so.  God called the dry land Earth,[a] and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good”
Genesis 1:9-10

Sometimes persons, places, or things fail to live up to our expectations. At other times, we don’t have high expectations and end up pleasantly surprised!  Such was the case with Pam and me regarding our recent visit to Liverpool, England. Nothing against Liverpool, but we simply had anticipated a couple of touristy spots related to the Beatles and maybe a busy industrialized waterfront where cargo and container vessels left a little room for a cruise ship to dock.  Not the case!

Don’t be alarmed, but Pam and I, even though not yet teenagers in the early 60’s, were never Beatles fans. And, when you think Liverpool, you think music and in particular the Beatles. The reality of how music is a dynamic force that affects cultures locally, regionally, and even globally becomes very evident when visiting Liverpool. We quickly developed an appreciation and greater understanding of how surroundings influence people, and in turn, how people influence their surroundings. But, in Liverpool, it’s much more than the music and the sound that is unique to the Merseybeat. There is a rich history here that covers years and even centuries before the musical British invasion that we enjoyed learning about. You can read our previous post about Liverpool here: A Surprise Of A City.

It is a fact that I prefer the countryside and country living but I honestly enjoyed visiting Liverpool. If you ever have the chance to go to the region, be sure to drop by Liverpool. If not, we hope you enjoy visiting the city with us here on the blog. A destination that should be very interesting to Beatles fans? Yes- for sure! But so much more. More than we expected! (Interesting note: during the time I spent typing this, I heard no less than 3 Beatles songs on the 60’s channel that was playing softly in the background). When preparing for a trip, we have a longstanding habit of packing entirely too much. While our bags are normally so heavy they feel like they are made of stone, they aren’t nearly as solid as these concrete suitcases!!This “boat” definitely caught our eye as we approached Liverpool. It was fascinating to discover that it was one of the ferries that crosses the Mersey River. The operators leave you without any doubts when they pull away from the pier with loudspeakers resonating the Gerry and the Pacemaker’s song “Ferry Cross the Mersey”.The Merseybeat is to Liverpool as Motown is to Detroit. It’s just that one of a kind sound that originates in a place and takes on an identity all its own. As a guitar player and band member in the latter half of the 60’s,  I played a Fender guitar through a Fender amp. We also included a keyboard of sorts, better described as an electric organ. It was impossible for a bunch of guys from Alabama with our instrumentation to come close to a sound like that which came from Liverpool and other parts of the UK. The Merseybeat was guitar driven and seemed somewhat simple to me as a player yet I could not achieve it with my Fender Jaguar and my particular playing style. The Liverpool accent contributed a lot to the sound and the vocal harmonies were tight and unique.
People that end up having big influence or major impact in our world almost always have small, little known beginnings or opportunities along their path. Such is the case with the Beatles and many other artists who played numerous times at Liverpool’s Cavern Club. The opportunity to develop their talents and musical identities at a place like the Cavern was good for both artists and the club. Maybe without this no one would have ever heard of the Beatles? Who knows! And for sure, we would not have any idea of such a place called the Cavern Club, much less decide to locate it and take photos of the place (along with thousands of visitors each year). Which came first, the Hotel or the song?  The Hotel is just around the corner from the Cavern Club. It is almost impossible in Liverpool to get away from the influence of the music and the artists that are part of the Merseybeat. Did you know that Liverpool has the only Beatle-inspired hotel in the entire world? You can’t help but notice the life-size statues of the Fab Four just above the first floor!  I guess we expected a large bustling park or a big field where strawberries grew in season, but this is what we discovered as our local driver took us to some of the “out of the way” places that are spread out across Liverpool.  The gate, a replica of the original which was removed! . Behind the gate is a grown up, brushy area where the Strawberry Field, a Salvation Army orphanage, once stood.  Lennon grew up just around the corner from the orphanage and used to play in the wooded garden behind the home.  He attended garden parties there during the summer! We didn’t add our names to the graffiti on the entrance columns, but it looks like everyone else has!  The name of the home became world famous in 1967 with the release of the Beatles single “Strawberry Fields Forever” written by John Lennon.  Lennon left money in his will for Strawberry Field!    Not too far from Strawberry Field is the home where John Lennon lived with his Aunt Mimi from the age of five until age 22.  Yoko Ono purchased the house in 2002 and donated it to the National Trust, where tours are offered by appointment. Again, Liverpool has so much to see in a compact area around downtown and the river that can be achieved on foot, but this home is 10 or 15 minutes by car from downtown. Quoting Lennon from an interview, “I moved in with my auntie who lived in the suburbs in a nice semidetached place with a small garden and doctors and lawyers and that ilk living around…not the poor slummy kind of image that was projected in all the Beatles stories.”  The tour buses stop at a sign at the end of the street to allow tourists to get their photos of Penny Lane. But if you go down Penny Lane, which is a bit narrow, you will find this older and unfortunately abused sign embedded in a wall along the street. All of us are greatly impacted by our childhood and “growing up” years. Good or bad, we have our stories to tell, keepsakes we treasure, things we wish we could forget, and in this case, songs to write about those experiences. “Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes ….” so Paul McCartney wrote when he penned the song Penny Lane in 1967. Like John Lennon who wrote Strawberry Fields, these were real places that were part of their everyday living.   Just in case you are wondering, that is a giraffe peering over our heads! The City of Liverpool is a very welcoming city and displayed quite a fireworks show exclusively for our cruise passengers that began at the dock as we set sail. Very nice! Maybe it is their way of saying ”Y’all come back now, ya hear”.      Thanks for joining us as we discovered the unique city of Liverpool!butch-closer Linking with Pieced Pastimes, Silver Pennies, Life on Lakeshore Drive, Thoughts From Alice, Mod Vintage Life, Coastal Charm, My Uncommon Slice of Suburbia, The Dedicated House, Dwellings-Heart of Your Home, Savvy Southern Style, Ivy and Elephants, French Country Cottage, From My Front Porch To Yours, Stone Gable, Confessions of a Plate Addict, Worthing Court, Between Naps on the Porch, Cedar Hill Farmhouse, A Stroll Thru Life, The Style Sisters, The Charm of Home, The Winthrop Chronicles, Cornerstone Confessions, A Delightsome Life, Imparting Grace, Posed Perfection, Katherines Corner, My Romantic Home, Chic On A Shoestring Decorating, Rooted In Thyme, Share Your Cup, TheEnchanting Rose, Alabama Women Bloggers, 21 Rosemary Lane, Northern Nesting, Oh My Heartsie Girl,  Cozy Little House, Rattlebridge Farm, The Turquoise Home, My Flagstaff Home, In The New House, Natasha in Oz, Vintage Refined, Rustic & Refined, Must Love Home, Grammie Time

A Surprise Of A City

September 14, 2015~ Travel

“Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen”
Ephesians 3:20

If someone had asked me what I knew about Liverpool, England prior to our visit in July, I would have said that it was the birthplace of the Beatles.  I have never been so pleasantly surprised by a city.  It was modern and energetic, but with a real sense of history!   Liverpool was a borough since 1207 and a city from 1880.  The city’s expansion was largely brought about by its status as a major port, which included its participation in the Atlantic slave trade.  Liverpool was the port of registry of the ocean liner RMS Titanic, and many other Cunard and White Star ocean liners such as RMS Lusitania and Queen Mary! It’s status as a port city has contributed to its diverse population, which was drawn from a wide range of peoples, cultures, and religions!  Tourism forms a significant part of the city’s modern economy.  Please join us as we take a tour of one of our favorite stops in the British Isles!

The Liverpool Waterfront is one of the most recognized skylines in the world. The Pier Head is a riverside location in the city centre and is part of the Unesco World Heritage Site.  The site encompasses a trio of landmarks!  One of these is the Royal Liver Building consisting of two clock towers, both crowned by mythical Liver Birds.

The Port of Liverpool Building is one of the three buildings at Pier Head, that are also known as “Three Graces.”  It is noted for the large dome that sits atop it.

River Mersey at Liverpool gave its name to Merseybeat, developed by bands from Liverpool, notably the Beatles.

Water quality in the Mersey was severely affected by industrialization. With  campaigns to improve the quality, it was announced in 2009 that the river is cleaner than any time since the “industrial revolution”!

The Albert Dock is a complex of dock buildings and warehouses opened in 1846.  It was the first structure in Britain to be built from cast iron, brick, and stone, with no structural wood. As a result, it was the first non-combustible warehouse system in the world!

The Albert Dock was considered a revolutionary docking system because ships were loaded directly from/to the warehouses!

Albert Dock featured  the world’s first hydraulic cranes.  Due to its open yet secure design, it stored valuable cargoes such as brandy, cotton, tea, silk, tobacco, ivory, and sugar!

Today the Albert Dock is a major tourist attraction.  The Merseyside Maritime Museum was one of the most interesting museums that we have visited and it was free of charge.  The international importance of Liverpool as a gateway to the world, including its role in the transatlantic slave trade and the RMS Titanic,  is shown in the museum’s collections!

Lusitania was a British ocean liner that was briefly the world’s largest passenger ship. She was launched by the Cunard Line in 1906.

The Atlantic slave trade took place across the Atlantic Ocean from the 16th through to the 19th centuries.  Estimates are that about 12 million Africans were shipped across the Atlantic.

s
The International Slavery Museum was so moving and to think that modern day slavery is still going on is an horrific tragedy!

Unfortunately we were not able to capture the size of the Liverpool Cathedral (Church of England).  The total length is 207 yards making it the longest cathedral in the world!

The high altar in the Liverpool Cathedral!  The foundation stone was laid by King Edward VII in 1904 and the completion of the building was marked in October 1978 and attended by Queen Elizabeth II.

Gustav Adolfs Kyrka or the Scadinavian Seamen’s Church was built between 1883-1884.  Its unusual architecture caught our eye as we were walking.

Liverpool has a large colorful multi-cultural population, a high percentage of which is Chinese.  Liverpool Chinatown is the first chinatown established in Europe.  The entrance is landmarked by a beautifully crafted traditional Chinese arch, imported piece by piece from Shanghai!

St. Luke’s Church is a former Anglican Church and is now a ruin!  It was built between 1811 and 1832.

The church was badly damaged during the Liverpool Blitz in 1941, and remains as a roofless shell.  It now stands as a memorial to those who were lost in World War II.

The Three Graces…Royal Liver Building, the Cunard Building, and the Port of Liverpool Building on Liverpool’s historic waterfront!

The Georgian architecture, waterfront skyline, their friendly culture, and the endless museums…these are just a few of the reasons why I found Liverpool a pleasant surprise on our visit to the British Isles!  Be sure to stay tuned for more on Liverpool’s very own Beatles and The Merseybeat in the coming weeks!

Taken By Storm: A Week In St. Maarten

August 31, 2015~ Travel

“And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?””
Matthew‬ ‭8:23-27‬

A week ago yesterday, we left for (what we thought would be) a 5 day vacation to the Caribbean island of St. Maarten/St.Martin. We were guests of our long-time friends, Patti and Mike at their beautiful condo on the beach.  The day before our scheduled flight, we had some concern about tropical storm/hurricane Danny in the Caribbean.  We decided if the flight was not canceled we would go. Upon arrival Sunday, the weather was perfect! For extra precaution, the authorities shut down the island on Monday in anticipation of the storm.  Monday morning brought cloudy skies and a little rain, but that was the extent of Danny.  For a brief time while still well southeast of St. Maarten, Danny had been a Category 3 hurricane, but thankfully had diminished and passed by almost unnoticed. By afternoon, most of the businesses re-opened and things were back to normal.  Tuesday and Wednesday brought back typical tropical weather….and it was perfect!  We were in the clear!  Or so we thought.  Enter tropical storm Erika.

By late Wednesday afternoon, we heard of another storm approaching us. And this would surely put a kink in our plans, as we were scheduled to fly out on Thursday afternoon.  We went ahead and checked in online, but we caught wind of authorities on the island implementing a mandatory curfew and shutting down the island starting at 10 pm.  To prepare for the approaching storm, maintenance men from the resort came and secured and locked the storm shutters on all our sliding terrace doors and large windows.  By midnight, the howling winds began to blow.  It wasn’t looking like we would be leaving as planned.  Thursday morning brought pounding waves, high winds, and the dreaded email that our flight was canceled.

We sat in safety and in the company of good friends, French pastries and tarts, Dutch cheeses, and crackers as the weather deteriorated. One thing was for sure– we would not go hungry!!  The winds increased to 45-50 mph sustained and 60 + mph gusts (and maintained that level for twelve hours!)  while the waves were crashing up to the second stories on adjacent buildings!  We were forced to relax…and it was a welcomed time of rest!  There were no Delta flights on Friday and we were rescheduled to depart on Saturday afternoon.

As I have more life experiences, hopefully, I have learned that plans can suddenly change and there is no reason to fret over things that are out of my control!  I mean, we had two extra days with friends on a Caribbean island…what is there to complain about?!  Unfortunately,  the neighboring island of Dominica was hard hit with loss of life, property, and devastating floods. Butch and I are grateful for the mystery of God’s mercy that kept us safe!

St. Maarten/St.Martin is the smallest island in the world to be shared by two nations, the United Kingdom of the Netherlands and France, creating a European-influence vibe with Caribbean flair.  Considered the culinary capital of the Caribbean, locals like to think of St. Maarten/St. Martin as delightfully Dutch and fantastically French!

The temptation to soak up sun and surf is overwhelming, but we also chose to take in the two-country ambience!  The entire island has a population of 80,000 comprising more than 150 nationalities and is only 37 miles square!

Our friends have a gorgeous condo overlooking this scene!

We spent hours enjoying the beauty of the azure waters of the Caribbean.  My Mother and I had visited with Patti and Mike in 2001, but this was Butch’s first trip.

Morning coffee with a view!

The condo is located on Maho Bay Beach.  This beach offers thrills not for the faint-hearted.  I captured this photo from our balcony!

People line the beach to capture KLM’s landing!  This is the largest aircraft that lands on the island!

The Philipsburg Courthouse (on the Dutch side) was built in 1793 and has been renovated several times over the years

The guavaberry is a fruit tree that grows in the Caribbean.  The fruit is half the size of a cherry. The Guavaberry Emporium on Front Street in Philipsburg carries products made from the sweet fruit!

From the Court House on Front Street, the wide palm-lined pedestrian walkway leads to the beach!

Old Street lives up to its name with 19th-century houses that today contain specialty shops!

There are 37 beaches on the island and we attempted to see them all!

On the French side of the island, you will find  boutiques with many of the French luxury brands such as Cartier, Louis Vuitton, and Chanel!

We shopped the Wednesday market in Marigot (French side) to see the diverse wares that were offered!  The “Spiceman” makes his own blends of spices and sells them along with classic spices at his stand.

I can’t resist macarons anywhere, anytime!

The French know how to do pastries!

The flamboyant tree (Delonix Regina) is prolific all across the island.  It is noted for its fern-like leaves and flamboyant display of flowers!

These little guys were everywhere!  The green iguana is native to the Caribbean!

Sunset over Maho Beach on Friday evening…what a difference a day makes!

Thanks for coming along with us!

Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of th Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of the year! I am sharing this merry table that was inspired by @april.cornell Victorian Christmas tablecloth! As an April Cornell brand ambassador I received the beautiful tablecloth and lovely Essential blue napkins. The red and white checkered top lends itself to classic casual elegance. The lovely snowy village on the border of the cloth came to life with a couple of snowy wood slice chargers that are topped with tiny little village shops that my beloved Mother gave me many years ago. They hold a special place in my heart. The salad plates depict Christmas Village scenes and complement the cloth. Living in the country, our summer days are filled with outdoor chores, one of which is gardening! My ‘Little Lamb’ panicled hydrangeas are in full bloom and are the star of my simple table setting! The basket holding the hydrangeas is very sentimental. It belonged to my beloved Mother who kept her journals and devotional books in the basket. I often picked up the books and journals to read while visiting my sweet Daddy. Since my Daddy passed away in March, my brother and I are cleaning out our parents home. I just knew the basket was coming home with me! My precious Mother would have loved seeing it filled with flowers! A vintage tablecloth, @april.cornell ‘Eden’ napkins, Portmeirion ‘Botanic Garden’ dinner plates and stemware from Tuesday Morning (many years ago) complete the table!

I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bodily resurrection enables all those who choose to follow Him to have assured victory over our greatest enemy…death!

I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

A fluffle of moss bunnies hopped up to the picnic table. A ‘Charming’ tablecloth with Mary Lake-Thompson napkins and Williams Sonoma enchanting ‘Famille Rose’ bunny plates!

I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition of Tea on Tuesdays. My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. As an April Cornell Brand Ambassador, I was gifted these gorgeous linens! I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.

I am serving my favorite, Earl Gray tea, from an Eileen’s Reserve teapot. Teacups by Grace Teaware and vintage Rose Chintz salad plates by Johnson Brothers add more floral patterns to the mix. Japanese Magnolia blooms were cut from my garden and placed in a lilypad teapot!

Mary @ homeiswheretheboatis.net and I welcome Nancy @nance_endless_summer as our special guest! LINK in bio for the blog posts. Have a wonderful day!
