A Village In Provence

April 6, 2015~ Travel

“Let the mountains bear prosperity for the people,
and the hills, in righteousness!”

Psalm‬ ‭72‬:‭3

After reading Peter Mayle’s “A Year in Provence,” the southeastern region of France became a must see!  The pictures of the brilliant sunlight, the azure skies, the fragrant lavender fields, the medieval villages perched on hilltops have enticed travelers from all over the world to this magical region of France!  I must say it did not disappoint.  I have always admired the Provençal style of living-from the rich colors of decorating to the farm-to-table cuisine!  One of our favorite villages is Roussillon.  We hope you enjoy our tour of this totally unique village in Provence!

Roussillon is ranked as one of the most beautiful villages
in France!  It is located in the heart of the biggest ochre
deposits in the world!

The village of Roussillon is surrounded by beautiful countryside!

Ochre has been used for centuries, and is the oldest pigment
used for painting

A view of the village is like an artist’s pallet, with the varying
colors from yellow to purple, with all the shades of pink and
red in between.

“The best way to see a place is to get lost.” It was fun to
wander the maze of streets and squares!

The ochre facades of the buildings are amazing!

Shades vary from light yellow to dark red, set off by the brightly painted shutters and doors!

Every arched passage leads to more feasts for the eye!

The yellow hued building is Saint Michael Church with its 17th century facade!

Roussillon’s architecture
reflects the memories of centuries past!

We enjoyed a lovely Provençal lunch (where you see the
red umbrellas) overlooking the picturesque scenery!

Lush countryside with the ochre deposits on the hills!

It is exciting to follow a cobblestone path and discover a gorgeous view!

I was enchanted by the exterior colors of this charming restaurant!

This photo looks like a painting.  I might should ask our artist friend,
Craig to paint this stunning scene!

I took this photo overlooking the old Mediterranean tiles that grace every rooftop!

The perfect Provençal farmhouse!

More ochre stained homes!

The belfry was renovated in the 19th century as a bell tower!

As I was preparing this blog, I suggested to Butch that we
need to go back to Roussillon and stay a week!
He hasn’t commented yet!

Archway reveals one of my favorite buildings!

The colors are so pleasing and typical Provence!

The yellow building with dark red shutters is a bookstore!

Gorgeous view of the red ochre cliffs contrasting with the lush
green pine trees!

Thank you for reading and sharing everyday living with us!

Walking Where He Walked Part Two

March 23, 2015~ Faith, Travel

If you remember a couple of weeks ago, we started a tour of the Holy Land.  Among the places we saw were The Mount of Beatitudes, The Sea of Galilee, and the Jordan River.  You can see part one here:  Walking Where He Walked.
Our travels continued as we approached the City of Jerusalem from the east. We came over a mountain and suddenly coming into view across a rugged landscape are places that we’ve heard about, read about, and talked about for years. We never imagined having an opportunity to actually see these sights and walk these paths. And, while the experience is almost too much to take in at one time, our local guide informs us that our view is from a place known as the Mount of Olives. Come with us down into the City and then on to the region of the Great Salt Sea.

Our first view of the Old City of Jerusalem with its walls built between 1535 and 1538 on the remains of the ancient walls. Facing the Mount of Olives on the eastern side of the Old City of Jerusalem is the Eastern Gate.  It was sealed shut during the reign of the Ottoman Empire.

The Mount of Olives is a mountain ridge east of and adjacent to Jerusalem’s Old City and is the location of many Biblical events. The Mount has been used as a Jewish cemetery for over 3000 years. Jesus went down the mount on his triumphal entry to Jerusalem on Palm Sunday.

“And when he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples, saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’'”
Luke‬ ‭19‬:‭28-31‬
The Garden of Gethsemane, near the foot of the Mount of Olives is where Jesus went with his disciples to pray the night before he was crucified.

“Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, ‘Sit here, while I go over there and pray.'”
Matthew‬ ‭26‬:‭36‬ In the garden stand the gnarled trunks of eight olive trees that some say were there during the time of Jesus.  Others say they are from the 12th century.  A study concluded that some of these olive trees are amongst the oldest known to science!

“But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God. I trust in the steadfast love of God forever and ever”
Psalm‬ ‭52‬:‭8‬ This is a view from the Temple Mount across the Kidron Valley to the Mount of Olives.

“And as he sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?” And Jesus began to say to them, “See that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray”
Mark‬ ‭13‬:‭3-6‬
The Temple Mount is the location of Mount Moriah, where Abraham prepared to offer his son Isaac to God.  King Solomon built the first Temple on the traditional site of Mount Moriah.  Herod built the temple that stood during Jesus’ day.

“After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.
And he said to them, ‘Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?’ “
Luke‬ ‭2‬:‭46-47, 49‬
The Dome of the Rock was completed on the Temple Mount between 691 to 692, about 55 years after Muslim armies captured Jerusalem.  The original function and significance of the Dome of the Rock are uncertain.  The building is not a mosque. Masada is an ancient fortification located on the top of an isolated rock plateau on the edge of the Judean Desert and overlooking the Dead Sea. Herod the Great built palaces for himself on the mountain and fortified Masada.  Almost all historical information comes from the first century Jewish Roman historian Josephus. One of 15 long storerooms that kept essential provisions for time of siege.  Herod filled them with food and weapons! The Dead Sea, also called the Salt Sea, is a landlocked salt lake between Israel and Jordan  Its surface and shores lie some 1,300 feet below sea level – the lowest elevation and the lowest body of water on the surface of the earth.  The desolate wilderness beside the lake offered refuge to David. Date palm trees grow around the Dead Sea.

“The righteous flourish like the palm tree and grow like a cedar in Lebanon”
Psalm‬ ‭92‬:‭12‬

The Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in this general area of the ancient ruins of  Qumran in the West Bank.  The caves are located about 2 kilometers inland from the Dead Sea.  The Scrolls are for the most part written in Hebrew, but there are many written in Aramaic. En Gedi is the largest oasis along the western shore of the Dead Sea.  The abundant springs and temperate climate provided the perfect conditions for agriculture in ancient times.  Around 1000 BC, En Gedi served as one of the main places of refuge for David as he fled from Saul.

“And David went up from there and lived in the strongholds of Engedi”
1 Samuel‬ ‭23‬:‭29‬ The Western Wall or Wailing Wall is located in the Old City of Jerusalem.  It is a relatively small western segment of the walls surrounding the Temple Mount, the holiest site in Judaism. Jewish people offer prayers at this wall that is the only remains of the Second Temple of Jerusalem.  Visitors to the wall have long followed the practice of wedging small slips of paper, upon which prayers and petitions are written, into the cracks between the stones. The Pool of Bethesda, site of one of Jesus miracles-where He heals the paralytic.

“Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades. In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed.
One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.” Jesus said to him, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked. Now that day was the Sabbath”
John‬ ‭5‬:‭2-3, 5-9‬
The entrance to the Upper Room…this room is traditionally held to be the site of the Last Supper.

“And he sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him, and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ And he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us.'”
Mark‬ ‭14‬:‭13-15‬ Interior of the Upper Room “Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away. And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers”
‭Acts‬ ‭1‬:‭12-14‬ Below the street’s of Jerusalem’s Old City lies the Praetorium (Judgement Hall) where Jesus was condemned by Pontius Pilate.  It is located at the beginning of the Via Dolorosa.  Butch, standing on what is believed to be the original stone floor that Jesus stood on, leading us in a song of worship

“Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the governor’s headquarters, and they gathered the whole battalion before him. And they stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they spit on him and took the reed and struck him on the head. And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him and led him away to crucify him”
Matthew‬ ‭27‬:‭27-31‬
The Via Dolorosa (way of Suffering) is a street within the Old City of Jerusalem, held to be the path that Jesus walked, carrying his cross, on the way to his crucifixion. The Gospel writers call the place where Jesus was crucified Golgotha-an Aramaic word meaning “the skull.”  Calvary is the Latin form of the word.

“And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. And it was the third hour when they crucified him. And the inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.” And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left”
‭Mark‬ ‭15‬:‭22-27‬ “It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour, while the sun’s light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last. Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God, saying, “Certainly this man was innocent!'”
Luke‬ ‭23‬:‭44-47‬ “When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb”
Mark‬ ‭16‬:‭1-2‬ Entrance to the tomb!

“And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back—it was very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe, and they were alarmed” Mark‬ ‭16‬:‭3-5‬
 The Empty Tomb

“And he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him”
Mark‬ ‭16‬:‭6‬
 “He’s not here anymore
He’s alive
Death has lost the fight to Jesus Christ
Hell cries in agony
Heaven celebrates victory
Hallelujah we have a risen Lord!”
        Butch Richardson
Mount of Olives at sunset overlooking Jerusalem, our last view!

“And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.'”
Matthew‬ ‭28‬:‭18-20‬

Walking Where He Walked

March 12, 2015~ Faith, Travel

Traveling to the Holy Land fulfilled a life-long dream for Butch and me.  It made the Bible “come alive”…just to see the places we had read about and studied since childhood!  With our celebration of Christ’s resurrection only a few weeks away, we thought it a great idea to share with you, our readers, the land where Jesus walked!  Hope you enjoy!

Our first stop was the ruins of Caesarea on the Mediterranean Sea located midway between Tel Aviv and Haifa. It is often referred to as Caesarea Maritima, to distinguish it from Caesarea Philippi near the Jordan River

Caesarea is the site of one of the most important cities in the Roman World, the Roman capital of the province of Judea at the time of Jesus.  It was an important center of early Christianity. The Apostle Paul was imprisoned here before being sent to Rome for trial.

(Acts 25 :1-27)

Caesarea was named in honor of Caesar Augustus by Herod the Great more than 2000 years ago!

Called the Mount of Beatitudes!  Tranquil gardens provide a good vantage point to view the Sea of Galilee.  This  hilltop is the traditional site of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) which contains a passage known as The Beatitudes!

“Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you”
(‭Matthew‬ ‭5‬:‭1-12‬)

The Sea of Galilee is fed by the Jordan River and is 13 miles long and 7 miles wide.
It is considered the “cradle of the gospel”. The sea is associated with the public ministry of Jesus.
He chose fishermen from this sea to be his disciples and and sent them out to be “fishers of men” -Peter, Andrew, James and John

(Luke 5:1-11)

A lunch of Saint Peter’s fish that live in the Sea of Galilee.
The name comes from Matthew’s gospel account of Peter catching a fish that carried a coin in its mouth.

“However, not to give offense to them, go to the sea and cast a hook and take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth you will find a shekel. Take that and give it to them for me and for yourself”
(‭Matthew‬ ‭17‬:‭27‬)

Imagine Jesus stilling the tempest of this sea, saying to the storm that swept over it…

“Peace be Still”
(Matt 8:23-27, Mark 4:34-41)

The Jordan River rises on the slopes of Mount Hermon, on the Syrian-Lebanese border, flows through northern Israel to the Sea of Galilee and empties into The Dead Sea!  As you can see, this photo was taken in a tourist spot where people can be baptized in the Jordan!

“Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John,
to be baptized by him”
(‭Matthew‬ ‭3‬:‭13‬)

Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River and Christians from all over the world come here to be baptized!  Butch and I both had planned to be re-baptized, but when I saw the fish and river rats, I reneged!!

Jesus made Capernaum his home during the years of his ministry. The city was located on the Sea of Galilee!

And leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

(‭Matthew‬ ‭4‬:‭13-14‬)

The darker foundation is the remains of the early Roman synagogue, from the times of Jesus, built with the local (black) basalt rock.  The earlier synagogue was the center of Jesus activities, where He taught.

Overlooking the village of Cana where Jesus performed the miracle at the wedding in Cana

(John 2:1-11)

Megiddo, also known as Armageddon, is an important ancient town that overlooks the Valley of Jezreel. Archaeologists have unearthed an incredible 25 layers of settlement built on top of each other!

Megiddo’s long history is related to its strategic location on one of the main routes used for travel between Egypt, Syria, and Mesopotamia.

The city is referred to in the New Testament as Armageddon, a name derived from the Hebrew for Mount Megiddo, Har Megiddo. But, many Biblical scholars disagree!

“And they assembled them at the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon”
(‭Revelation‬ ‭16‬:‭16‬)

Overlooking the spacious Jezreel Valley with Mount Tabor in the distance.  The fertile alluvial soil makes it Israel’s breadbasket!

“…and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand.
And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying,

“Hail, King of the Jews!”

(‭Matthew‬ ‭27‬:‭29‬)

Beit Shean was a major Biblical city located in the center of trade routes.  The mighty Canaanite city was not conquered by the Israelites.

“Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and its villages,…”
(‭Judges‬ ‭1‬:‭27‬)

King Saul’s body was displayed on its walls after his defeat by the Philistines.

“They put his armor in the temple of Ashtaroth, and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth-shan”

(‭1 Samuel‬ ‭31‬:‭10‬)

The theater was built in the first century AD. The structure seen today was the end of the second century.  The theater contained 7000 seats.  The acoustics are amazing and Butch and I had the privilege to sing!

A major earthquake leveled the city in 749 AD!

Stay tuned as we journey into the old town of Jerusalem…coming soon!

I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bodily resurrection enables all those who choose to follow Him to have assured victory over our greatest enemy…death!

I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

Happy Tuesday! Welcome to the Sunshine Cottage whe Happy Tuesday! Welcome to the Sunshine Cottage where it is warm and cozy on this cold February day. It is Tea on Tuesdays and I have set a tea table with the “Blue Roses” collection that was a collaboration between @victoriamagazine and @april.cornell The exclusive porcelain pattern and matching linens have been used many times and I still enjoy their blue and white beauty. Instead of fresh flowers, porcelain ones require no arranging. Sweet treats pair perfectly with a traditional English Breakfast tea. I am joining friends Sarah @sjpa48 and Mary homeiswheretheboatis.net

Happy first Monday of February! After so many cold Happy first Monday of February! After so many cold days, we are experiencing a tease of spring with a 73 degree day that is forecast. After the gray and cloudy days, I needed a dose of color and decided to set a colorful citrus themed brunch! Using a bird gold and pewter stand, I mixed a citrus medley of lemons, oranges, and limes with pink and white carnations as the centerpiece. The table is highlighted with blue and white dishware. Fresh squeezed orange juice, French-pressed coffee and sweet treats of lemon poppyseed muffins, lemon cake with lemon icing, and lemon pastries are perfect for a small brunch. A faux lemon topiary belonged to my beloved Mother and seemed a perfect addition to a citrus-themed table! You are invited to join me and my Monday Morning Blooms friends, Lidy @frenchgardenhouse Sarah @sjpa48 and Mary homeiswheretheboatsis.net by clicking the LINK in my bio!

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage where I have been fluf Welcome to Sunshine Cottage where I have been fluffing for Valentine’s Day! For many years my Sweetheart and I have celebrated February 14th at home where it is quiet, no reservations are required, and we always have a table by the window!

I love the traditional colors of red and pink! Frilly carnations fill a vintage Staffordshire, ‘Charlotte’ pitcher which rests on an antique Limoges plate with a velvet gold-crowned heart. The plate stack consists of a Royal Stafford ‘Asiatic pheasant’ dinner plate, American Atelier ‘Baroque’ luncheon/salad plate, Johnson Brothers, ‘Winchester’ salad plate, and a vintage pierced Bavarian rose plate! I am a huge fan of mixing colors, patterns, and textures for a collected look.

I have joined 17 table stylists for a Valentine’s Day Blog Hop. Click the LINK in my bio to see all of the Valentine inspiration!

Happy Tuesday! On this very cold winter’s day, I Happy Tuesday! On this very cold winter’s day, I am serving my favorite tea, Earl Grey, in the Sunshine Cottage where it is warm and cozy! The magic of dancing sunlight enhances the table that is dressed with a warm tartan plaid throw repurposed as a tablecloth! ‘Winter Fauna’ bird salad plates from Pottery Barn (many years ago and now discontinued) remind me of the birds I watch from my kitchen window during the winter season. The Grace Teaware set adds more blue and white to the Spode ‘Blue Room’ dinner plates. Sweet treats were placed on a stack of Bordallo Pinheiro plates! A darling Hummel ‘Icy Adventure’ depicts a scene of an outdoor frozen pond with a pair of sweet ice skaters, a rosy cheeked boy and girl who have fallen down on the ice. I am sharing Tea on Tuesdays with Shannon @bellebleuinteriors and Mary homeiswheretheboatis.net Link in my Bio will take you to my blog post! Stay warm and safe!
