Three Days in the Valley

February 5, 2015~ Travel

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits”
‭Psalm‬ ‭103‬:‭1-2‬

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I thought it most appropriate to share a romantic get-a-way that Butch and I had the opportunity to enjoy!  When Butch had to travel to San Francisco on business, of course, I tagged along.  The Bay Area has a beauty all its own and I am always game for a trip!  When business was finished we drove over that famous orange bridge and into another world, the idyllic Napa Valley.  We had visited only once before and it was only for a day..just long enough to know that I wanted to go back!

Traveling over the Golden Gate Bridge was our preferred route to Napa Valley.  We never want to miss the opportunity to see this view!

We had to make a short stop in Sausalito…love this artistic and picturesque little town situated near the northern end of the Golden Gate Bridge!

When we arrived in the beautiful Napa Valley in the afternoon, we immediately began checking out all the beautiful estates!  Darioush is very grand in its scale!

One reviewer wrote that walking up to Darioush is like walking onto a Hollywood set-I couldn’t agree more!

Our first night in Napa, we ate at Michael Chiarello’s (Food Network & Bravo star) restaurant, Bottega.  The Italian food, including this dessert, was perfecto!

Admittedly not the best pic, but I was a little excited when the celebrity chef appeared at the table next  to ours.  I was most disappointed that he didn’t stop and say hello to us-he just doesn’t know what he missed!!

The following morning we spent time in Chiarello’s shop, Napa Style.  I could have stayed for hours, but Butch has a few issues (as do most men!) about shopping!

After a light lunch, we had reservations for a tour of this historic estate, Nickel & Nickel in Oakville!  The property encompasses 42 acres that were originally settled as a farmstead in the 1880’s!  The landscape design features centuries old Valley Oak trees that surround the house with 32 foot Canary Palm trees at the front and rear of the house.

Built around 1884 and named for John C. Sullenger, who established the farmstead, the 2800 square foot house is a handsome farmhouse with charming Queen Anne details!  Abandoned and neglected for more than two decades, the house was restored in 2002.  It features the original clapboard wood siding, fish scale, sunburst, and rosette elements

A classic white picket fence with red climbing roses surrounds the house.

A basket weave brick entry walk that is lined with Iceberg Tree Roses. Why can’t my entrance look like this?!

Side view of the Iceberg Tree Roses!  Golden Aurora Fescue grass looks like a lush green carpet!

Butch has always wanted a windmill in our pasture-an all wooden one!!  Have you priced those lately?

Everywhere you looked, the gardens were perfection!

Dinner that evening was at Bistro Jeanty in Yountville.  A Michelin star awarded quaint French restaurant, their beef bourguignon was for the history books in my food experiences!! The best expert that I know (Butch), who couldn’t care less about fancy names or places, gave it two thumbs up!!  He is a meat and potato kind of guy!!

The Creme de Tomato en Croute (tomato soup in puff pastry) was unbelievable! They are well-known for this always-on-the-menu appetizer!

The Rhine House on the Beringer Estates in St. Helena was completed in 1884 and is now the centerpiece of the expansive Beringer property.  With it’s beautiful exterior stonework and stain-glass windows, this 17 room mansion is a classic example of ornate Victorian architecture with its many gables, turrets, and ornaments!

Castello di Amorosa in Calistoga is an authentically-styled 13th century castle.  Years were spent researching medieval building construction.  Nearly 200 containers of old, hand-made materials were shipped from Europe to lend authenticity.  One million hand-made, antique bricks from torn down Hapsburg palaces were used.  This is an amazing property to see and read about!  It opened to the public in April 2007.

The vineyard area around the castle is a reminder of the famous Tuscany area of Italy that we have visited and love!

v

The Napa Valley climate and soil are the perfect conditions for growing world-class grapes!  We had a very interesting encounter with a lady in a vineyard in the Texas Hill Country and you can read it here:  Lessons From A Vineyard

Breakfast arrived on our deck every morning at the elegant Milliken Creek Inn and Spa!

The lush grounds as seen from our breakfast spot

Perhaps one of America’s most famous chefs, Thomas Keller’s legendary restaurant, The French Laundry!  Reservations have to be made months in advance, so we just stood on the street and took photos-we had to prove that we were standing near what many label the best restaurant in the world!

Keller’s famous restaurant and bakery, Bouchon located in Yountville did provide one of my favorite sweets, macarons!

The herb and vegetable garden at Mustard’s Grill, a well-known restaurant in Yountville (we first ate there in 2005), and many suggest that visitors to the valley must eat there!  So, on our last night in Napa, we enjoyed yet another meal at Cindy Pawlcyn’s (a culinary pioneer and a Napa legend) American grill!

The Catherine Palace

January 26, 2015~ Travel

“Heaven is trembling in awe of Your wonders, the kings and their kingdom are standing amazed
Here in Your presence, we are undone.  Here in Your presence, Heaven and Earth become one
Here in Your presence, all things are new.  Here in Your presence, everything bows before You”
-New Life Worship

Saint Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia.  Being a major European cultural center, it is also an important port on the Baltic Sea.  Saint Petersburg, Russia, was not a city that was on our radar, but we were more than thrilled with all that we discovered!  The famous palaces…The Winter Palace, Peterhof Palace, and The Catherine Palace demonstrate the might of the Romanov dynasty through the sheer luxury of the tsars residences!  Today, we take you on a tour of one of those-the most beautiful Catherine Palace!

Fifteen miles south of Saint Petersburg is the town of Tsarskoye Selo.  In the eighteenth century it became an out-of-town imperial residence for the Russian Royal family.   Its centerpiece is the opulent Catherine Palace!

Catherine Palace was built for Empress Petrovna and was completed in 1756.

This is the Portrait Hall and was used to display formal depictions of Russian rulers.  In the center is a unique paper sculpture of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna in her official court attire. Wide doorways were definitely necessary!

Large delft porcelain heaters provided heat for the palace

The Green Dining Room- its pistachio colored walls are embellished with white moulded ornament

This was my favorite room in the palace!

The Amber Room was a gift to Peter the Great in 1716 celebrating peace between Russia and Prussia.  It was dubbed “the Eighth Wonder of the World.”  Construction of the Amber Room began in 1701 and was originally installed in the palace of Friedrich I, the first King of Prussia.  Peter the Great admired the room on a visit-and it was presented to him as a gift cementing a Prussian-Russian alliance against Sweden.

It was originally installed in the Winter House in Saint Petersburg, but moved in 1755 to the Catherine Palace.  After 18th-century renovations, the room glowed with six tons of amber and other semi-precious stones.

During World War 2, Nazis looted tens of thousands of art treasures, including the illustrious Amber Room.  In the final months of the war, the amber panels, which had been packed away in crates, disappeared and have remained missing for decades!

The new Amber Room’s reconstruction  began in 1979 and was completed 25 years later.

The White State Dining Room was used for grand banquets and evening meals taken by the Empress

The porcelain service was made at the famous Meissen factory in Germany.  In keeping with eighteenth-century tradition, the table is covered with elaborately draped tablecloths, decorated with garlands of flowers.

Catherine Palace is rich with gold ornamentation!

Hand-painted silk panels line the Chinese Drawing
Room of Alexander I.

The furnishings are exquisite…elaborate porcelain candelabra!

Ceilings are richly detailed!

Chevaliers’ Dining Room is not particularly large so mirrors and false windows containing mirrors on the walls make it spacious and bright!

The Great Hall (also known as the Grand Ballroom) is the centerpiece room at the Catherine Palace.
It is almost 56 feet wide and over 154 feet long!

The Great Hall is on the second floor and occupies the entire width of the palace.  The two tiers of windows enhance the impression of grandness and size.  The area between the windows are covered with gilded mirrors.

We were treated to 18th century music and dancing

The ceiling is elaborately painted and the inlaid parquet floor magnificent!

Royal carriages

Coach made for Empress Catherine II, is striking for its size, opulent gilded carving and rich interior decoration

The five golden domes top the Palace Chapel.  Over 200 pounds of gold were originally used to gild the exterior.

The dazzling 18th century Catherine Palace is a perfect example of Russian baroque…its bright blue exterior is distinguished by row after row of white columns and pilasters with gold baroque moldings running the length of the facade. Catherine Palace was named for Catherine I, the wife of Peter the Great, who ruled Russia for two years after her husband’s death.

The palace owes its grandeur to Empress Elizabeth, the daughter of Peter the Great and Catherine I.  It was built on a scale to rival Versailles!

As we were leaving the palace, a uniformed brass band entertained and dancers in period costumes performed!

“Some trust in chariots and some in horses,
but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.  They collapse and fall,
but we rise and stand upright”
Psalm 20:7-8

California Dreamin’ (on such a winter’s day!)

January 19, 2015~ Travel

Anyone ready for some sunshine?  We obviously are…hence us posting about our travels to beautiful and sunny places the past two weeks!  One week we took you along with us to Dubrovnik, Croatia and the next we went to the beautiful Greek island of Santorini.  While both are breathtakingly beautiful, it’s not necessary to travel out of the country to see such scenery-we do have some of the most beautiful places right here in the good ole’ US of A!  The drive down the Pacific Coast Highway from Monterey to San Simeon is like no other!  Butch and I flew into San Francisco and rented a car and headed to Monterey where we stayed for three days as we enjoyed driving along the Pacific Ocean, Pebble Beach, Carmel, and Big Sur.  We then drove back to San Francisco for a couple of days before flying to sweet home Alabama!  The weather was beautiful and we had very little fog.  October is a perfect time to go!

Monterey is on the central coast of California.  Cannery Row is the waterfront street and was the site of a number of sardine canning factories.  It was here that the setting of John Steinbeck’s novel Cannery Row took place!

The crashing waves on the rocks are magnificent!

The Pacific coast is so different than our more familiar Gulf Coast.  Each one has its own beauty!

The Lone Cypress, standing on a granite hillside off California’s scenic 17 Mile Drive in Pebble Beach, is said to be the most photographed tree in North America.  It is possibly as old as 250 years and has been scarred by fire.

More scenery along the 17 Mile Drive

The golf is legendary at Pebble Beach

The lodge envelopes the 18th green of the Pebble Beach Golf Links, one of the most exciting closing holes in golf.  Love the ocean view from the entrance!

To enjoy the scenery along the Pacific Coast Highway, you must rent a convertible!

Big Sur offers stunning views!  Many classify Big Sur as the segment of California State Route 1 from Carmel south to San Simeon

Butch and I had to take a short hike to see these magnificent rock formations in the Pacific!

The water is very cold in comparison to the warm waters of the Gulf!

Elephant seals come ashore and form colonies for only a few months of each year to give birth, breed, and molt.

The Hearst Castle built by William Randolph Hearst is a prominent landmark in San Simeon along Highway 1

This massive assembly room in the castle is adorned with historic Renaissance and Baroque tapestries and masterpieces of neoclassical sculptures

The expansive gardens!

Spectacular Neptune Pool with its colonnades and statues provided the setting for lavish parties for Mr. Hearst and his guests!

The meticulously detailed indoor Roman Pool was modeled after ancient Roman baths. It is tiled from ceiling to floor, and features copies of eight ancient Roman marble statues.

Old Fisherman’s Wharf in Monterey

Chateau Julien in Carmel

We have been fans of John Denver since we were married in 1973.  Butch has been told more times than we could count that he sounds just like him singing!  It was out from these rocks that his experimental airplane crashed in 1997.

“This is my autograph, here in the songs that I sing.  Here in my cry and my laugh, here in the love that I bring.  To be always with you and you always with me.”
 -John Denver

We are so thankful for our time spent together!

“Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the Lord on high is mighty!”
Psalm‬ ‭93‬:‭4‬

Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of th Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of the year! I am sharing this merry table that was inspired by @april.cornell Victorian Christmas tablecloth! As an April Cornell brand ambassador I received the beautiful tablecloth and lovely Essential blue napkins. The red and white checkered top lends itself to classic casual elegance. The lovely snowy village on the border of the cloth came to life with a couple of snowy wood slice chargers that are topped with tiny little village shops that my beloved Mother gave me many years ago. They hold a special place in my heart. The salad plates depict Christmas Village scenes and complement the cloth. An easy centerpiece of fresh fruit is nestled atop fresh greens and placed in a Natale bowl by @arteitalicacrownlinen I have joined 17 table stylists for a Christmas Tablescape Blog Hop. Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morn Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morning Blooms. The theme for the July edition is Summer Living! Living in the country, our summer days are filled with outdoor chores, one of which is gardening! My ‘Little Lamb’ panicled hydrangeas are in full bloom and are the star of my simple table setting! The basket holding the hydrangeas is very sentimental. It belonged to my beloved Mother who kept her journals and devotional books in the basket. I often picked up the books and journals to read while visiting my sweet Daddy. Since my Daddy passed away in March, my brother and I are cleaning out our parents home. I just knew the basket was coming home with me! My precious Mother would have loved seeing it filled with flowers! A vintage tablecloth, @april.cornell ‘Eden’ napkins, Portmeirion ‘Botanic Garden’ dinner plates and stemware from Tuesday Morning (many years ago) complete the table!

Happy July! 2025 is half over, and where did it go Happy July! 2025 is half over, and where did it go? I am celebrating the red, white, and blue with a table set in the garden with a couple of treats and sweet iced tea for this hot summer day. Precious memories are attached to the checked tablecloth. My beloved Mother prepared Sunday lunch every week until she passed away. Each Sunday was a feast comparable to Thanksgiving. During the summer months, she often used this checked cloth. More delicious meals than I could count have been served on this cloth!

Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer table is in my garden. I decided the table should be simple to allow the hydrangeas to be the star! I always love sharing a ‘special something’ on a table setting that is sentimental and has wonderful memories attached like the majolica pitcher that belonged to my beloved Mother. A beautiful blue and white tablecloth by @april.cornell for @victoriamagazine was a surprise from my sweet husband and also included the ‘blue roses’ tea set which was a part of the limited edition when it was first introduced a few years ago. The Sur La Table floral-patterned earthenware was inspired by London’s Chelsea Flower Show in collaboration with artist, April Cornell. Vintage hobnail milk glass stemware was purchased at the Longest Yard Sale. Sometimes I just enjoy a simple table!

The table is enhanced by views toward the mountain, woodlands, and the large Snowball Viburnum. The verdant rye grass appears as a green carpet that has been spread for Easter! Vintage Fitz and Floyd ‘Herb Garden’ teapots, sugar and creamer, and oval tray are suited for springtime with their embossed bows, vegetables, and words. A bouquet of Kwanzan Cherry blossoms add more spring color to the setting.

I am serving a simple teatime with Earl Grey tea, savory egg salad filled phyllo cups, and sweet vanilla cupcakes with cream cheese icing, and macarons! A favorite cottage rose tablecloth and Essential napkins are by April Cornell.

We are most blessed to celebrate the resurrection of Christ, being the source of new life, yet new life that is eternal. Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our woodlands and this is the first one of the season, an Easter/Spring table! I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bodily resurrection enables all those who choose to follow Him to have assured victory over our greatest enemy…death!

I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

A fluffle of moss bunnies hopped up to the picnic table. A ‘Charming’ tablecloth with Mary Lake-Thompson napkins and Williams Sonoma enchanting ‘Famille Rose’ bunny plates!

I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition of Tea on Tuesdays. My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.

I am serving my favorite, Earl Gray tea, from an Eileen’s Reserve teapot. Teacups by Grace Teaware and vintage Rose Chintz salad plates by Johnson Brothers add more floral patterns to the mix. Japanese Magnolia blooms were cut from my garden and placed in a lilypad teapot!

Mary @ homeiswheretheboatis.net and I welcome Nancy @nance_endless_summer as our special guest! LINK in bio for the blog posts. Have a wonderful day!
