Eat Your Beans!

March 9, 2015~ Food & Entertaining, Recipes

“She is like the ships of the merchant;
she brings her food from afar.
She rises while it is yet night
and provides food for her household
    and portions for her maidens”
Proverbs 31:14-15

As I said last week, gathering around the dining room table is one of our favorite things to do in our home.  Coming together for meals has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, with each meal bringing distinct memories- ones that I have carried with me throughout my life! My mother always had people in our home for meals, and I have tried to follow suit, welcoming friends and family to our table.  You can catch a glimpse here:  Sunday Tradition.  One of my favorite aspects about cooking is discovering and sharing new recipes.  I have them written on envelopes, notebook paper, deposit slips, and even some on recipe cards.  They have been collected through the years from family and friends, each telling a story!  Each one captures a special time, a place, a person, or an emotion.  In short, I love the memories and stories that food has given me!

Years ago, I scheduled an appointment with a nail technician on a very cold December morning.  Have you ever felt like you have known someone for years, even though you just met?  As we talked, it became evident our hearts were knitting together with common interests. For the next 19 years, we spent countless hours in conversation as I sat across the table while she filed, buffed, and polished. We shared our everyday living as we laughed, cried, and reminisced. She took genuine concern and interest in my life, always asking if we had upcoming travel plans, what decorating projects I was working on, how Butch was doing, etc. You get the idea.

“The best things in life are meant to be shared”

Since we both loved to cook, the subject came up naturally. We discussed menus for holiday meals, special events, or that night’s dinner. We have been able to exchange many recipes and menu ideas through the years. She retired in March of last year and I so badly miss our long talks we enjoyed on a weekly basis, but she remains close in my heart. The countless hours and recipes we shared together will not soon be forgotten. I am reminded so often of her gifts of love, encouragement, and kindness. She suggested this recipe a couple of years ago when I was planning a Sunday lunch for friends and family. It is one of my favorites and one that I prepare often.  I hope you will try and enjoy “Lima Beans and Smoked Sausage” from the kitchen of my precious friend, Janice.

I gathered all the ingredients for this recipe-fresh beans are always best-but frozen ones work fine. I always recommend home-made chicken stock, but if you are in a pinch for time, by all means use the box kind!

I strongly recommend purchasing a good salt…It really makes a difference!  I try to always have “Fleur de sel”, this jar is a sea salt hand harvested from France and is a great finishing salt!

The recipe is actually Lima Beans with Prosciutto.  Our grocer did not have prosciutto on Friday, so I substituted with Conecuh Sausage which I have often done!  This smoked sausage is made right here in Alabama.  If you can find it in your area,  it is excellent for this recipe.  Smoked turkey or ham can also be substituted.

The ingredients are assembled in my Mother’s wonderful Le Creuset Dutch oven!

I have never been a huge fan of lima beans, but this brings them to a whole new level.  I always use the baby variety.  This recipe is great using butter, black-eyed, pink-eye, crowder, or lady peas!

During the summer when my basil is growing, I will add it before serving!

The recipe doesn’t call for it, but I add freshly grated parmigiano reggiano!!

The beans and sausage serve as the main dish.  For dinner Saturday,  I added roasted sweet potatoes with olive oil, honey, and cinnamon, and my Mother’s recipe for Southern corn bread, and  Vidalia onion relish! Butch said this meal was off the charts delicious!!  Love compliments from my sweetie!

Bon Appetit!

Simple + Southern Sunday No. 20

March 8, 2015~ Simple + Southern Sunday

“Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father”

Philippians‬ ‭2‬:‭9-11‬

“All hail the pow’r of Jesus’ Name!
Let angels prostrate fall;
Bring forth the royal diadem,
And crown Him Lord of all!”
-Edward Perronet

A white church building is always an “attention getter”-often a reminder of days gone by.

The cardinals in our maple tree wearing their red proudly!

Our local horses are prepared for the cold weather…outfitted in their warm woolen blankets!

Adorable Braden and his host of toys are watching over the entrance of his fort!

How neat to have your own covered bridge on the path out to the barn.  Love the cross!

Thinking a villa in Tuscany??  How about Jefferson County, Alabama!

God’s attention to the smallest detail-inside a tulip bloom!  Wow!

As you may know by now, I swoon for macarons!  What a pleasant surprise-8 different flavors!

Not sure if it’s the size, colors, or just the ability to park as you desire, but this did catch our eye.  Great space saving idea for a narrow one way street!

Awaiting spring and some visitors to recline and enjoy the lake…sunny warm days will soon change this view!

A red barn, white snow, and a grayish-blue mountain…beautiful and All-American in its display!

“I was glad when they said to me,
‘Let us go to the house of the Lord!’”
Psalm 122:1

Bookends: What’s Cookin’?

March 5, 2015~ Bookends, Decorating

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;
fools despise wisdom and instruction”

Proverbs‬ ‭1‬:‭7‬

Over the past few years, I have taken note of the multi-purpose dining room in many of my books and magazines. Most often I have seen it used as a library with bookcases along the walls, which I think is genius!  Take a look at one on my Pinterest board:

(via)

Our rather small dining room has two walls of windows and is open to the living room.  That only leaves one wall with just enough room for the dining chairs to pull out…unfortunately, no room for bookcases!! After removing the tablescape from Monday’s party, I decided to repurpose the dining room for the next few days as a place to sit and read through some of my favorite cookbooks! I love cookbooks that not only share recipes, but tell a story.  If my dining room could talk…oh the stories it could tell!  Stories of the many friends and family members that have laughed and cried together, the love shared, and countless meals enjoyed within its space! So for the next few days, I will enjoy sitting at the table and thumbing through stories of food and fellowship!  Just to walk through and to see well-loved books gracing the table is bliss!  I could get lost in here…and maybe I will do just that!

The dining table is stacked with some of my favorite cookbooks!

I placed a heavy throw in a large paisley pattern over the table! With books and a cup of coffee, I was entertained all afternoon!

Very little decoration on the table except a candle (red currant scent), a plate of Granny Smith apples (from Tablescape Tuesday: Let’s Party!) and a terrarium with moss and a couple of male red birds.  Butch plants rye grass every winter and it is so neat to watch the cardinals as they land on the bright green grass with their brilliant red plumage!

Chef Frank Stitt is our favorite!  He is the owner and executive chef of Highlands Bar and Grill, Bottega Restaurant, and Chez Fon Fon in Birmingham.  He is a multi James Beard nominee and was inducted into the James Beard Foundation’s Who’s Who of Food and Beverage” in 2011!

I use Ina Garten’s recipes often-they always turn out!

This is an old book (published in 1986) and it is special because my friend, Kathy found it and gave it to me.  She always finds unique gifts!

No Southern woman would be without several, if not dozens, of Southern Living cookbooks!

The Foothills Cuisine of Blackberry Farm is my newest cookbook. Butch bought it for me last week while we were visiting the farm! You can read more about our trip here:  Back At The Farm.  I love everything about this book!  It is not just full of recipes and menus, but it highlights some of the “old ways” such as preserving or pickling the garden’s bounty, making cheese from fresh sheep’s milk, or curing meats!  It is a feast visually and I will be trying out recipes very soon!

Marbled Potato Salad with Arugula Pesto!

Vegetables grown on the farm!

Peanut Butter Pie

So gracious of Sam Beall, the proprietor of Blackberry Farm and author of the cookbook, to autograph my copy!

A fun way to use your dining table when you aren’t going to be using it for meals for a few days!

The Collected Tabletop is a lovely entertaining guide and was given to me by my precious friend, Patti!

Every page has stunning photography!

Included inside the book were these creative book marks!!

Patti met the author and had her autograph my copy.  Look at her beautiful handwriting…so rare today!

I recently bought this lovely book “Come to the Table” where celebration is presented as a living thankfulness of God’s goodness!

Gigi’s Baked Carrots are presented in the perfect setting.  It has been said, “that we eat with our eyes first”!

Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer table is in my garden. I decided the table should be simple to allow the hydrangeas to be the star! I always love sharing a ‘special something’ on a table setting that is sentimental and has wonderful memories attached like the majolica pitcher that belonged to my beloved Mother. A beautiful blue and white tablecloth by @april.cornell for @victoriamagazine was a surprise from my sweet husband and also included the ‘blue roses’ tea set which was a part of the limited edition when it was first introduced a few years ago. The Sur La Table floral-patterned earthenware was inspired by London’s Chelsea Flower Show in collaboration with artist, April Cornell. Vintage hobnail milk glass stemware was purchased at the Longest Yard Sale. Sometimes I just enjoy a simple table!

With glorious weather, the table next to our woodl With glorious weather, the table next to our woodlands was perfect for teatime! It is Tea on Tuesdays with blogging friends Mary and Kitty. The table is enhanced by views toward the mountain, woodlands, and the large Snowball Viburnum. The verdant rye grass appears as a green carpet that has been spread for Easter! Vintage Fitz and Floyd ‘Herb Garden’ teapots, sugar and creamer, and oval tray are suited for springtime with their embossed bows, vegetables, and words. A bouquet of Kwanzan Cherry blossoms add more spring color to the setting.

I am serving a simple teatime with Earl Grey tea, savory egg salad filled phyllo cups, and sweet vanilla cupcakes with cream cheese icing, and macarons! A favorite cottage rose tablecloth and Essential napkins are by April Cornell.

We are most blessed to celebrate the resurrection of Christ, being the source of new life, yet new life that is eternal. Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our woodlands and this is the first one of the season, an Easter/Spring table! I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bodily resurrection enables all those who choose to follow Him to have assured victory over our greatest enemy…death!

I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

A fluffle of moss bunnies hopped up to the picnic table. A ‘Charming’ tablecloth with Mary Lake-Thompson napkins and Williams Sonoma enchanting ‘Famille Rose’ bunny plates!

I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition of Tea on Tuesdays. My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. As an April Cornell Brand Ambassador, I was gifted these gorgeous linens! I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.

I am serving my favorite, Earl Gray tea, from an Eileen’s Reserve teapot. Teacups by Grace Teaware and vintage Rose Chintz salad plates by Johnson Brothers add more floral patterns to the mix. Japanese Magnolia blooms were cut from my garden and placed in a lilypad teapot!

Happy first Monday of February! After so many cold Happy first Monday of February! After so many cold days, we are experiencing a tease of spring with a 73 degree day that is forecast. After the gray and cloudy days, I needed a dose of color and decided to set a colorful citrus themed brunch! Using a bird gold and pewter stand, I mixed a citrus medley of lemons, oranges, and limes with pink and white carnations as the centerpiece. The table is highlighted with blue and white dishware. Fresh squeezed orange juice, French-pressed coffee and sweet treats of lemon poppyseed muffins, lemon cake with lemon icing, and lemon pastries are perfect for a small brunch.
