Tablescape Tuesday: A Very Merry Birthday!

December 9, 2014~ Food & Entertaining, Tablescape Tuesday

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory,
glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth”
John 1:14

As many of you who celebrate a birthday during December know, it is often hard to give the birthday the attention it deserves!  The day can be minimized and often overlooked as the year long anticipation of Christmas draws near!  Our son, Seth was born on December 11th, and for several years I would wait until we had his birthday party before I decorated for Christmas!  I also noticed something I had never paid attention to prior to his December birth-people often wrapped birthday presents with Christmas wrap.  That would never happen for a July birthday!  In other words, we really tried hard to keep his birthday and Christmas separate.  But now as he turns twenty-nine, his birthday dinner is a Christmas setting- and he doesn’t care as long as I prepare some of his favorite foods!  The menu he always requests:  manicotti with lots of Italian sausage and bechamel sauce. Hope you enjoy Seth’s birthday (Christmas) tablescape!

And while we are talking about Seth’s birthday, be sure to check back on Thursday for Butch’s post!

It is a breathtaking sunrise on the first Sunday of December.  The sun cast the most beautiful light on the raspberry walls of our dining room!

The table is set with a natural and rustic theme, since we are celebrating Seth’s birthday!

I didn’t use a tablecloth, but allowed the warmth of the cherry table to set the tone of this tablescape.  The placemats are red and green plaid with a metallic gold thread running through the pattern.  I have had them so long, I can’t remember where they are from!

The Nikko “Happy Holidays” pattern is my oldest Christmas china, and I still love to use it!  I often use the rattan chargers for texture.

I totally love the pair of antler candle stands that Seth made me-aren’t they perfect for the table?!  I found the “Christmas Lodge” snack plates by 222 Fifth last week at TJ Maxx and used them as a bread and butter plate.  They really work in the theme!

Freshly cut pine!

The center of the table was an assortment of rustic elements: small birds nestled in the pine, pine cones scattered, a pair of tall birds!  I used tartan plaid napkins found at TJ Maxx with ornaments from Wal-Mart as napkin rings!

I used 4 decorative cones filled with pine

Picture ornaments from Wal-Mart used  as place card holders-very inexpensive idea!

The sunlight provides a spotlight on one of three rustic candle lanterns on the table,  purchased at TJ Maxx this season!

Ruby red stemware found years ago at a department store

The mint julep cups are often used for greenery or flowers…today they are filled with short-needle pine!

Morning view of the large Nativity sitting in the dining room bay window.

Since we were celebrating Seth’s birthday, I made his favorite…red velvet!

Candles are lit and it’s time to celebrate Seth!

“Hark the herald angels sing
Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled!”
-Charles Wesley

Christmas Vignettes: All Is Calm, All Is Bright

December 8, 2014~ Decorating

“In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,
to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David.
And the virgin’s name was Mary”
Luke‬ ‭1‬:‭26-27‬

I just love the Christmas season!! I have so enjoyed sharing with you, our new friends, the treasured collections that we have assembled over forty one years of marriage!  If you haven’t already, you will soon see that most things I decorate with has a story behind it-whether it be hand-painted, hand-made, or given to me by someone very dear!  I have had so many sweet comments about the lovely things that my Mother made and I have more to share today.

On the chest in my foyer is a ceramic church that Mother made.  Each year as I unwrap it, my eyes fill with tears and my mind is flooded with beautiful memories of her!  I rejoice that I have a treasure trove of her hand-made things that I will pass on to Seth and Allison!

I have a few figurines that I have purchased to use in my Victorian setting!

I love the light through the stained glass windows-so realistic!

I know that my Mother painted many of these and gave to  people that were dear to her!  Many of you have commented about the things you still have that she made-and that is a testimony of her giving spirit even still today!

Such a sweet little doll chair sits in our foyer that I upholstered in a velvet leopard fabric!  Just a touch of Christmas cheer!

This table sits in a hallway leading from the foyer.  Seth, as a teenager, gave me the Santa ready for his Christmas Eve ride!  I always enjoy placing it in a different spot!

I have a huge collection of books, therefore, I am constantly in need of more bookcases.  On top of the shelves sit two porcelain dolls that my Mother made!

I love how she dressed them!

Their faces are so beautiful!

We love sharing this season with you–stay tuned for more Christmas from our home!  Thank you for inviting us into your everyday living!

“And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus”
‭Luke‬ ‭1‬:‭30-31‬

Simple + Southern Sunday No. 7

December 7, 2014~ Simple + Southern Sunday

“But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream,
saying, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived
in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus,
for he will save his people from their sins’”
Matthew‬ ‭1‬:‭20-21‬

sss2

“The birth of Christ is the central event in the history of the earth — the very thing the whole story has been about.” — C.S. Lewis

Sunday is a wonderful day to reflect on the goodness of God in our everyday living.  Have you ever thought about seemingly small things–the ones that seem insignificant–as exactly what God will use to glorify himself and carry out his plan?  Take, for example, the Christmas story.  Caesar Augustus called for a census and that meant each person had to return to his or her hometown.  After they arrived in Bethlehem, Mary gave birth to Jesus there, and laid him in a manger.  That is how the prophecy (Micah 5:2) was fulfilled  that the Savior would be born in Bethlehem (Luke 2:1-7).  Joseph was following the law of the land. But God, in his providence was working this together in order that Jesus be born in Bethlehem, just as he said he would.  Don’t overlook the small things–they may, in fact, be the most important.

May you experience the joy of His coming as a baby in the manger!!

We really do live in Turkeytown, a Native American settlement established in 1788.  It is named for the original founder of the settlement, the Chickamauga Cherokee chief, Little Turkey. This is a little country church in our area, TurkeyTown United Methodist!

This really made me laugh this week!  Looking through my kitchen window into our pasture, I noticed something on the head of the target practice deer!  I walked outside to inspect and this is what I saw!  We can call him Rudolph the Redneck Reindeer!

This picture really is special!  2007 was a life-changing year for our family…we hope to share our story with you in January.  The very fact that Butch and I were able to make a trip to NYC in early December was nothing short of miraculous.  As you can see, the stress put extra pounds on both of us!  God is faithful!

I have lived in Gadsden my whole life–and we have the cutest downtown area!  Friday night they hosted the “North Poll Stroll” where many came dressed in character. This is a picture of the Ice Princess who joined in on the fun!

The second candle represents PEACE.

“And again, Isaiah says, ‘The Root of Jesse will spring up, one who will arise to rule over the nations;
the Gentiles will hope in him.’ May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him,
so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit”
Romans 15:12-13

Happy Wednesday! I set a table next to our woodlan Happy Wednesday! I set a table next to our woodlands in memory of my beautiful Mother who was a lovely example of a Proverbs 31 woman. Mother had the gift of hospitality and shared it with everyone. Karl Rosenfield peonies from my garden fill a treasured keepsake pitcher handed down from my grandmother! A beautiful floral April Cornell ‘Lillianna’ tablecloth and Famille Rose salad plates elevate the status of the old picnic table next to our woodlands. I have collected bejeweled enamel trinket boxes for many years and shared a few on the table for whimsy and fun. For memories of my Mother, click the link in my profile.

With glorious weather, the table next to our woodl With glorious weather, the table next to our woodlands was perfect for teatime! It is Tea on Tuesdays with blogging friends Mary and Kitty. The table is enhanced by views toward the mountain, woodlands, and the large Snowball Viburnum. The verdant rye grass appears as a green carpet that has been spread for Easter! Vintage Fitz and Floyd ‘Herb Garden’ teapots, sugar and creamer, and oval tray are suited for springtime with their embossed bows, vegetables, and words. A bouquet of Kwanzan Cherry blossoms add more spring color to the setting.

I am serving a simple teatime with Earl Grey tea, savory egg salad filled phyllo cups, and sweet vanilla cupcakes with cream cheese icing, and macarons! A favorite cottage rose tablecloth and Essential napkins are by April Cornell.

We are most blessed to celebrate the resurrection of Christ, being the source of new life, yet new life that is eternal. The beauty of this spring will again give way to another autumn in a few months, but the significance of His empty tomb will never change! Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our woodlands and this is the first one of the season, an Easter/Spring table! I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bodily resurrection enables all those who choose to follow Him to have assured victory over our greatest enemy…death!

I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

A fluffle of moss bunnies hopped up to the picnic table. A ‘Charming’ tablecloth with Mary Lake-Thompson napkins and Williams Sonoma enchanting ‘Famille Rose’ bunny plates!

I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

For more of my Daddy’s story, click the link in my bio.

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition of Tea on Tuesdays. My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. As an April Cornell Brand Ambassador, I was gifted these gorgeous linens! I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.

I am serving my favorite, Earl Gray tea, from an Eileen’s Reserve teapot. Teacups by Grace Teaware and vintage Rose Chintz salad plates by Johnson Brothers add more floral patterns to the mix. Japanese Magnolia blooms were cut from my garden and placed in a lilypad teapot!

Happy first Monday of February! After so many cold Happy first Monday of February! After so many cold days, we are experiencing a tease of spring with a 73 degree day that is forecast. After the gray and cloudy days, I needed a dose of color and decided to set a colorful citrus themed brunch! Using a bird gold and pewter stand, I mixed a citrus medley of lemons, oranges, and limes with pink and white carnations as the centerpiece. The table is highlighted with blue and white dishware. Fresh squeezed orange juice, French-pressed coffee and sweet treats of lemon poppyseed muffins, lemon cake with lemon icing, and lemon pastries are perfect for a small brunch. A faux lemon topiary belonged to my beloved Mother and seemed a perfect addition to a citrus-themed table!
