Anxiously Awaiting Spring!

March 16, 2015~ Decorating

“…for behold, the winter is past; the rain is over and gone.
The flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing has come,
and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land”

Song of Solomon 2:11-13

Spring officially begins this Friday, March 20th, but I have declared that spring has begun at our house!  Winter has been unusually cold, rainy, icy, snowy, dreary, and dare I say, harsh, in northeast Alabama!  So we are welcoming spring with open arms!  The bright yellow daffodils and forsythia are in full bloom along with the soft pink of the ornamental magnolia trees.  Yesterday was sunny and 72…the weather doesn’t get any better than that!  My sweet Daddy calls it thermostat weather!  Welcome back to our kitchen, where spring has sprung!

Getting a jump on spring and Easter with lots of color on our kitchen island!

The bunnies are ready for nicer weather!

I gathered a fun cotton cloth on the granite surface to soften its hard scape!

Colorful gerber daisies in a vase with rabbit food (carrots)…so perfect for spring!

Sweet little rabbits holding moss and colorful eggs for a touch of Easter!

Chalk eggs purchased so long ago that I don’t remember from where!

Miss Bunny along with her companion was found at TJ Maxx several years ago.  I love that they are welcoming spring!

Mr. Bunny’s pink coat is a nice contrast to the polka dot platter!

Early spring always brings out the forsythia!

Gerber daisies wearing their happy faces!

The teapot, sugar, and creamer are Fitz and Floyd…gifts from Butch so many years ago!

The pattern is “Herb Garden”!  I have a few more pieces not displayed here!

The sugar bowl

The creamer

Such a cheerful kitchen island- anxiously awaiting spring’s arrival!

“Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love”
-Thomas Obediah Chisholm

Simple + {Childlike} Southern Sunday No. 21

March 15, 2015~ Simple + Southern Sunday

“Jesus loves me! This I know,
For the Bible tells me so;
Little ones to Him belong;
They are weak, but He is strong.

Yes, Jesus loves me!  Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!  The Bible tells me so”

You have probably noticed by now, that each week on Simple +Southern Sunday, you see a picture of a child, and aren’t they just adorable?  You’ve seen them in Santa’s lap, playing outside, getting dirty, baking, riding a cow, and stealing the show at weddings!

In Matthew 19, Jesus says…”Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.”
Matthew 19:14

This week, we wanted to just take a look into some children’s lives and hopefully as you’re scrolling, the joy will be as contagious to you as it has been to us!   We surely can learn a lot from the life of a child!  God has given us this life to enjoy-and children can teach us how to do that!  Things like…

…having a Doritos picnic on the floor with Nico, Benji, and Isaiah…

…taking it all in like Sarah…

…cruising in a new convertible like Max…

…walking a dog barefoot in your tutu like Virginia…

…going out to eat at Steak n’ Shake with Natalie…

…cutting teeth with little Beau…

…playing in the rain with Emma and Kara…

…licking brownie batter with Benji…

…dressing up in your princess dress like Gracie…

…playing in the dirt with Jack and Parker…

…finding the prize egg with Judson and Barker…

…giving it your best like Elsie…

…and little Grey “mustache” you a question…

…dressing to the “nines” as Myla…

…cowboy Hudson trying his hand at painting…

…looking for signs of spring with Charis and princess Addy Kate…

…sometimes you just have to take a little nap while standing like precious Sam…

…enjoying your birthday gifts with Mary Grace…

…enjoying your firetruck birthday cake like Nico…

“Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it”
Luke 18:17

Walking Where He Walked

March 12, 2015~ Faith, Travel

Traveling to the Holy Land fulfilled a life-long dream for Butch and me.  It made the Bible “come alive”…just to see the places we had read about and studied since childhood!  With our celebration of Christ’s resurrection only a few weeks away, we thought it a great idea to share with you, our readers, the land where Jesus walked!  Hope you enjoy!

Our first stop was the ruins of Caesarea on the Mediterranean Sea located midway between Tel Aviv and Haifa. It is often referred to as Caesarea Maritima, to distinguish it from Caesarea Philippi near the Jordan River

Caesarea is the site of one of the most important cities in the Roman World, the Roman capital of the province of Judea at the time of Jesus.  It was an important center of early Christianity. The Apostle Paul was imprisoned here before being sent to Rome for trial.

(Acts 25 :1-27)

Caesarea was named in honor of Caesar Augustus by Herod the Great more than 2000 years ago!

Called the Mount of Beatitudes!  Tranquil gardens provide a good vantage point to view the Sea of Galilee.  This  hilltop is the traditional site of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) which contains a passage known as The Beatitudes!

“Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you”
(‭Matthew‬ ‭5‬:‭1-12‬)

The Sea of Galilee is fed by the Jordan River and is 13 miles long and 7 miles wide.
It is considered the “cradle of the gospel”. The sea is associated with the public ministry of Jesus.
He chose fishermen from this sea to be his disciples and and sent them out to be “fishers of men” -Peter, Andrew, James and John

(Luke 5:1-11)

A lunch of Saint Peter’s fish that live in the Sea of Galilee.
The name comes from Matthew’s gospel account of Peter catching a fish that carried a coin in its mouth.

“However, not to give offense to them, go to the sea and cast a hook and take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth you will find a shekel. Take that and give it to them for me and for yourself”
(‭Matthew‬ ‭17‬:‭27‬)

Imagine Jesus stilling the tempest of this sea, saying to the storm that swept over it…

“Peace be Still”
(Matt 8:23-27, Mark 4:34-41)

The Jordan River rises on the slopes of Mount Hermon, on the Syrian-Lebanese border, flows through northern Israel to the Sea of Galilee and empties into The Dead Sea!  As you can see, this photo was taken in a tourist spot where people can be baptized in the Jordan!

“Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John,
to be baptized by him”
(‭Matthew‬ ‭3‬:‭13‬)

Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River and Christians from all over the world come here to be baptized!  Butch and I both had planned to be re-baptized, but when I saw the fish and river rats, I reneged!!

Jesus made Capernaum his home during the years of his ministry. The city was located on the Sea of Galilee!

And leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

(‭Matthew‬ ‭4‬:‭13-14‬)

The darker foundation is the remains of the early Roman synagogue, from the times of Jesus, built with the local (black) basalt rock.  The earlier synagogue was the center of Jesus activities, where He taught.

Overlooking the village of Cana where Jesus performed the miracle at the wedding in Cana

(John 2:1-11)

Megiddo, also known as Armageddon, is an important ancient town that overlooks the Valley of Jezreel. Archaeologists have unearthed an incredible 25 layers of settlement built on top of each other!

Megiddo’s long history is related to its strategic location on one of the main routes used for travel between Egypt, Syria, and Mesopotamia.

The city is referred to in the New Testament as Armageddon, a name derived from the Hebrew for Mount Megiddo, Har Megiddo. But, many Biblical scholars disagree!

“And they assembled them at the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon”
(‭Revelation‬ ‭16‬:‭16‬)

Overlooking the spacious Jezreel Valley with Mount Tabor in the distance.  The fertile alluvial soil makes it Israel’s breadbasket!

“…and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand.
And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying,

“Hail, King of the Jews!”

(‭Matthew‬ ‭27‬:‭29‬)

Beit Shean was a major Biblical city located in the center of trade routes.  The mighty Canaanite city was not conquered by the Israelites.

“Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and its villages,…”
(‭Judges‬ ‭1‬:‭27‬)

King Saul’s body was displayed on its walls after his defeat by the Philistines.

“They put his armor in the temple of Ashtaroth, and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth-shan”

(‭1 Samuel‬ ‭31‬:‭10‬)

The theater was built in the first century AD. The structure seen today was the end of the second century.  The theater contained 7000 seats.  The acoustics are amazing and Butch and I had the privilege to sing!

A major earthquake leveled the city in 749 AD!

Stay tuned as we journey into the old town of Jerusalem…coming soon!

Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of th Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of the year! I am sharing this merry table that was inspired by @april.cornell Victorian Christmas tablecloth! As an April Cornell brand ambassador I received the beautiful tablecloth and lovely Essential blue napkins. The red and white checkered top lends itself to classic casual elegance. The lovely snowy village on the border of the cloth came to life with a couple of snowy wood slice chargers that are topped with tiny little village shops that my beloved Mother gave me many years ago. They hold a special place in my heart. The salad plates depict Christmas Village scenes and complement the cloth. An easy centerpiece of fresh fruit is nestled atop fresh greens and placed in a Natale bowl by @arteitalicacrownlinen I have joined 17 table stylists for a Christmas Tablescape Blog Hop. Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morn Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morning Blooms. The theme for the July edition is Summer Living! Living in the country, our summer days are filled with outdoor chores, one of which is gardening! My ‘Little Lamb’ panicled hydrangeas are in full bloom and are the star of my simple table setting! The basket holding the hydrangeas is very sentimental. It belonged to my beloved Mother who kept her journals and devotional books in the basket. I often picked up the books and journals to read while visiting my sweet Daddy. Since my Daddy passed away in March, my brother and I are cleaning out our parents home. I just knew the basket was coming home with me! My precious Mother would have loved seeing it filled with flowers! A vintage tablecloth, @april.cornell ‘Eden’ napkins, Portmeirion ‘Botanic Garden’ dinner plates and stemware from Tuesday Morning (many years ago) complete the table!

Happy July! 2025 is half over, and where did it go Happy July! 2025 is half over, and where did it go? I am celebrating the red, white, and blue with a table set in the garden with a couple of treats and sweet iced tea for this hot summer day. Precious memories are attached to the checked tablecloth. My beloved Mother prepared Sunday lunch every week until she passed away. Each Sunday was a feast comparable to Thanksgiving. During the summer months, she often used this checked cloth. More delicious meals than I could count have been served on this cloth!

Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer table is in my garden. I decided the table should be simple to allow the hydrangeas to be the star! I always love sharing a ‘special something’ on a table setting that is sentimental and has wonderful memories attached like the majolica pitcher that belonged to my beloved Mother. A beautiful blue and white tablecloth by @april.cornell for @victoriamagazine was a surprise from my sweet husband and also included the ‘blue roses’ tea set which was a part of the limited edition when it was first introduced a few years ago. The Sur La Table floral-patterned earthenware was inspired by London’s Chelsea Flower Show in collaboration with artist, April Cornell. Vintage hobnail milk glass stemware was purchased at the Longest Yard Sale. Sometimes I just enjoy a simple table!

Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our woodlands and this is the first one of the season, an Easter/Spring table! I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bodily resurrection enables all those who choose to follow Him to have assured victory over our greatest enemy…death!

I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

A fluffle of moss bunnies hopped up to the picnic table. A ‘Charming’ tablecloth with Mary Lake-Thompson napkins and Williams Sonoma enchanting ‘Famille Rose’ bunny plates!

I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition of Tea on Tuesdays. My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. As an April Cornell Brand Ambassador, I was gifted these gorgeous linens! I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.

I am serving my favorite, Earl Gray tea, from an Eileen’s Reserve teapot. Teacups by Grace Teaware and vintage Rose Chintz salad plates by Johnson Brothers add more floral patterns to the mix. Japanese Magnolia blooms were cut from my garden and placed in a lilypad teapot!
