Simple + Southern Sunday No. 16

February 8, 2015~ Simple + Southern Sunday

“Speak, O Lord, and renew our minds;
Help us grasp the heights of Your plans for us—

Truths unchanged from the dawn of time
That will echo down through eternity.

And by grace we’ll stand on Your promises,
And by faith we’ll walk as You walk with us.
Speak, O Lord, till Your church is built And the earth is filled with Your glory”
-Speak O Lord, Keith Getty & Stuart Townend

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction,
and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work”
‭2 Timothy‬ ‭3‬:‭16-17‬

Three Days in the Valley

February 5, 2015~ Travel

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits”
‭Psalm‬ ‭103‬:‭1-2‬

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I thought it most appropriate to share a romantic get-a-way that Butch and I had the opportunity to enjoy!  When Butch had to travel to San Francisco on business, of course, I tagged along.  The Bay Area has a beauty all its own and I am always game for a trip!  When business was finished we drove over that famous orange bridge and into another world, the idyllic Napa Valley.  We had visited only once before and it was only for a day..just long enough to know that I wanted to go back!

Traveling over the Golden Gate Bridge was our preferred route to Napa Valley.  We never want to miss the opportunity to see this view!

We had to make a short stop in Sausalito…love this artistic and picturesque little town situated near the northern end of the Golden Gate Bridge!

When we arrived in the beautiful Napa Valley in the afternoon, we immediately began checking out all the beautiful estates!  Darioush is very grand in its scale!

One reviewer wrote that walking up to Darioush is like walking onto a Hollywood set-I couldn’t agree more!

Our first night in Napa, we ate at Michael Chiarello’s (Food Network & Bravo star) restaurant, Bottega.  The Italian food, including this dessert, was perfecto!

Admittedly not the best pic, but I was a little excited when the celebrity chef appeared at the table next  to ours.  I was most disappointed that he didn’t stop and say hello to us-he just doesn’t know what he missed!!

The following morning we spent time in Chiarello’s shop, Napa Style.  I could have stayed for hours, but Butch has a few issues (as do most men!) about shopping!

After a light lunch, we had reservations for a tour of this historic estate, Nickel & Nickel in Oakville!  The property encompasses 42 acres that were originally settled as a farmstead in the 1880’s!  The landscape design features centuries old Valley Oak trees that surround the house with 32 foot Canary Palm trees at the front and rear of the house.

Built around 1884 and named for John C. Sullenger, who established the farmstead, the 2800 square foot house is a handsome farmhouse with charming Queen Anne details!  Abandoned and neglected for more than two decades, the house was restored in 2002.  It features the original clapboard wood siding, fish scale, sunburst, and rosette elements

A classic white picket fence with red climbing roses surrounds the house.

A basket weave brick entry walk that is lined with Iceberg Tree Roses. Why can’t my entrance look like this?!

Side view of the Iceberg Tree Roses!  Golden Aurora Fescue grass looks like a lush green carpet!

Butch has always wanted a windmill in our pasture-an all wooden one!!  Have you priced those lately?

Everywhere you looked, the gardens were perfection!

Dinner that evening was at Bistro Jeanty in Yountville.  A Michelin star awarded quaint French restaurant, their beef bourguignon was for the history books in my food experiences!! The best expert that I know (Butch), who couldn’t care less about fancy names or places, gave it two thumbs up!!  He is a meat and potato kind of guy!!

The Creme de Tomato en Croute (tomato soup in puff pastry) was unbelievable! They are well-known for this always-on-the-menu appetizer!

The Rhine House on the Beringer Estates in St. Helena was completed in 1884 and is now the centerpiece of the expansive Beringer property.  With it’s beautiful exterior stonework and stain-glass windows, this 17 room mansion is a classic example of ornate Victorian architecture with its many gables, turrets, and ornaments!

Castello di Amorosa in Calistoga is an authentically-styled 13th century castle.  Years were spent researching medieval building construction.  Nearly 200 containers of old, hand-made materials were shipped from Europe to lend authenticity.  One million hand-made, antique bricks from torn down Hapsburg palaces were used.  This is an amazing property to see and read about!  It opened to the public in April 2007.

The vineyard area around the castle is a reminder of the famous Tuscany area of Italy that we have visited and love!

v

The Napa Valley climate and soil are the perfect conditions for growing world-class grapes!  We had a very interesting encounter with a lady in a vineyard in the Texas Hill Country and you can read it here:  Lessons From A Vineyard

Breakfast arrived on our deck every morning at the elegant Milliken Creek Inn and Spa!

The lush grounds as seen from our breakfast spot

Perhaps one of America’s most famous chefs, Thomas Keller’s legendary restaurant, The French Laundry!  Reservations have to be made months in advance, so we just stood on the street and took photos-we had to prove that we were standing near what many label the best restaurant in the world!

Keller’s famous restaurant and bakery, Bouchon located in Yountville did provide one of my favorite sweets, macarons!

The herb and vegetable garden at Mustard’s Grill, a well-known restaurant in Yountville (we first ate there in 2005), and many suggest that visitors to the valley must eat there!  So, on our last night in Napa, we enjoyed yet another meal at Cindy Pawlcyn’s (a culinary pioneer and a Napa legend) American grill!

Tablescape Tuesday: Sweet & Simple

February 3, 2015~ Food & Entertaining, Tablescape Tuesday

“We love because he first loved us”
1 John‬ ‭4‬:‭19

It’s nice to go out and have some great food in a splendid atmosphere that has a unique and romantic ambiance.  You know, one of those fine dining establishments where you are treated very special by everyone.  Like royalty almost, at least for about an hour and a half!   I don’t even have to park my car-wow!  We really do enjoy the privilege of doing that on occasion.  Seriously, I do love such an evening  and we are considering something of the sort as part of our upcoming weekend plans.  But I must share what I’ve truly felt and stated very plainly for almost 42 years now…and I make no bones about it.  There is no place on the planet I’d rather have dinner than at our home.  The food is untouchable.  The ambiance is unmatched.  It’s quiet and intimate and I could never be treated more special by anyone anywhere than I am by Pam right here in our space that God has graciously allowed us to occupy!  It’s sweet.  It’s simple.  It’s the best.  And I still don’t have to park my car.
-Butch

The dining room table is set for my sweetheart and me!  Butch and I plan to enjoy Valentine’s dinner at home with a savory meal, soft music, and sweet conversation rather than a crowded and noisy restaurant!

The table is dressed in shades of pink and creamy whites!

The tablecloth is vintage lace that was given to me.  I layered a sparkly silver scarf as a table runner over the lace, which I often do!

The chargers are round silver trays.  You also see pink toile dinner plates and dessert plates, both by Churchill.  The creamy white salad plates and cups are American Atelier that are a mainstay in my tablescapes!

Cups were filled with rose petals and a votive candle

The rose patterned antique plates used for bread and butter are marked Bavaria

Pink linen napkins with sterling napkin rings and a fuchsia rose tucked in adds a touch of elegance!

Flatware is a mixture of sterling and silver plate with crystal knife rests.  I love mixing patterns!

The centerpiece is a silver cake stand topped with a pillar candle and four crystal votives with a sprinkling of rose petals.  On either side are mint julep cups holding miniature roses!

We both love M & M’s, and Valentine’s gives us an excuse to indulge!

Another sweet treat, Lindor truffles on a pink heart plate!

One of Butch’s favorites-shortbread cookies!  They sit on an antique Limoges plate, a gift from a precious lady shortly before she passed away.

Vintage silver candle stands with creamy white porcelain figurines on each side!

Vintage Fostoria stemware

Adding candlelight to any table setting makes it feel celebratory!

Just a little glitz from the chandelier, looking down on our little romantic setting!

“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver”
Proverbs‬ ‭25‬:‭11‬

Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of th Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of the year! I am sharing this merry table that was inspired by @april.cornell Victorian Christmas tablecloth! As an April Cornell brand ambassador I received the beautiful tablecloth and lovely Essential blue napkins. The red and white checkered top lends itself to classic casual elegance. The lovely snowy village on the border of the cloth came to life with a couple of snowy wood slice chargers that are topped with tiny little village shops that my beloved Mother gave me many years ago. They hold a special place in my heart. The salad plates depict Christmas Village scenes and complement the cloth. An easy centerpiece of fresh fruit is nestled atop fresh greens and placed in a Natale bowl by @arteitalicacrownlinen I have joined 17 table stylists for a Christmas Tablescape Blog Hop. Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morn Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morning Blooms. The theme for the July edition is Summer Living! Living in the country, our summer days are filled with outdoor chores, one of which is gardening! My ‘Little Lamb’ panicled hydrangeas are in full bloom and are the star of my simple table setting! The basket holding the hydrangeas is very sentimental. It belonged to my beloved Mother who kept her journals and devotional books in the basket. I often picked up the books and journals to read while visiting my sweet Daddy. Since my Daddy passed away in March, my brother and I are cleaning out our parents home. I just knew the basket was coming home with me! My precious Mother would have loved seeing it filled with flowers! A vintage tablecloth, @april.cornell ‘Eden’ napkins, Portmeirion ‘Botanic Garden’ dinner plates and stemware from Tuesday Morning (many years ago) complete the table!

Happy July! 2025 is half over, and where did it go Happy July! 2025 is half over, and where did it go? I am celebrating the red, white, and blue with a table set in the garden with a couple of treats and sweet iced tea for this hot summer day. Precious memories are attached to the checked tablecloth. My beloved Mother prepared Sunday lunch every week until she passed away. Each Sunday was a feast comparable to Thanksgiving. During the summer months, she often used this checked cloth. More delicious meals than I could count have been served on this cloth!

Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer table is in my garden. I decided the table should be simple to allow the hydrangeas to be the star! I always love sharing a ‘special something’ on a table setting that is sentimental and has wonderful memories attached like the majolica pitcher that belonged to my beloved Mother. A beautiful blue and white tablecloth by @april.cornell for @victoriamagazine was a surprise from my sweet husband and also included the ‘blue roses’ tea set which was a part of the limited edition when it was first introduced a few years ago. The Sur La Table floral-patterned earthenware was inspired by London’s Chelsea Flower Show in collaboration with artist, April Cornell. Vintage hobnail milk glass stemware was purchased at the Longest Yard Sale. Sometimes I just enjoy a simple table!

The table is enhanced by views toward the mountain, woodlands, and the large Snowball Viburnum. The verdant rye grass appears as a green carpet that has been spread for Easter! Vintage Fitz and Floyd ‘Herb Garden’ teapots, sugar and creamer, and oval tray are suited for springtime with their embossed bows, vegetables, and words. A bouquet of Kwanzan Cherry blossoms add more spring color to the setting.

I am serving a simple teatime with Earl Grey tea, savory egg salad filled phyllo cups, and sweet vanilla cupcakes with cream cheese icing, and macarons! A favorite cottage rose tablecloth and Essential napkins are by April Cornell.

We are most blessed to celebrate the resurrection of Christ, being the source of new life, yet new life that is eternal. Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our woodlands and this is the first one of the season, an Easter/Spring table! I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bodily resurrection enables all those who choose to follow Him to have assured victory over our greatest enemy…death!

I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

A fluffle of moss bunnies hopped up to the picnic table. A ‘Charming’ tablecloth with Mary Lake-Thompson napkins and Williams Sonoma enchanting ‘Famille Rose’ bunny plates!

I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.
