Trees of Life

November 17, 2014~ Faith, Outdoors

“And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is
pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden,
and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil”
‭Genesis‬ ‭2‬:‭9

The earth has more trees than we have numbers–and that’s if we only consider those alive today!  The total number since creation is beyond mind boggling.  Even so, I want to mention a few particular trees that bring back some simple memories.  Of course, some trees of the past have eternal significance.  And then, there is a water oak in our yard that has a story all its own and I hope you will stick around and let me share it with you.

Many of you have have a green thumb.  Everything you plant thrives.  Most of my plantings don’t do so well,  but here are a few that miraculously made it!

We had moved into our house and had a little dirt for a yard and no shrubbery.  It was 1979.  A guy we knew had planted some trees and shrubs and had a leftover magnolia he didn’t think would make it so he offered it to us if I’d come pick it up.  I went after it.  Honestly, it was like the tree mentioned in the Bobby Goldsboro tune, “Honey”…”The first day that she planted, it was just a twig”.

Many years ago a friend and I did some deer hunting in Coosa County, Alabama.  While walking out one day I spotted a very small tree with green leaves still hanging on, even in the winter.  It was a holly, and I thought our yard needed one.  I have no idea how I dug it up–a shovel is not a normal part of my hunting gear.  I even forgot I had it for several days but finally dug a small hole and threw it in!

We had always heard about the fall beauty of the maple tree.  We had no maples on our place so when I found a close-out sale, buy two get one free – I couldn’t resist!  Maples grow slow,  so this Sugar Maple has been out front a long time now.

This water oak is not just another tree.  In the summer of ’98, a heartbreaking tragedy hit close to home.  Our neighbor and long time friends lost their son in an accident, on a Sunday afternoon, a few days before his 16th birthday.

A few weeks later, as summer was fading, I was in front of our house pulling weeds and spreading bark, preparing for cold weather.  As I reached down, I noticed a small plant, maybe 3 inches tall, that I knew was a little oak that had sprang to life that summer.  Instead of pulling it up, my thoughts at that moment caused me to just sit down and reflect on that summer.  I was on the ground and looking out across the front toward my neighbors.  After a few minutes, I located a shovel, dug up the new oak, and took it down into the yard and replanted it.  In my mind I gave the tree a name.  But, I told no one for a very long time.  You see, I was afraid it wouldn’t live, or if it did,  maybe a storm would later blow it over, or a disease would claim it.

I named the tree the “Lance Oak”.  As you can see, the tree is alive and well, and is now 16 years old.  Life is so fragile.  I know it’s only a tree.  And yes, wind may blow it away tomorrow.  But, as I’ve mowed our yard a few hundred times over these last 16 years, there’s probably not  been a single time, while mowing near this tree, that I haven’t thought of Lance and been reminded to pray for my neighbor.

Interesting – today I found this little water oak. About 3 inches tall, and growing not far from the “Lance Oak”.

I close with this. The first trees were in the Garden of Eden. God said all were good for fruit–except one. If you eat of it, you will surely die. He wasn’t kidding. He is God. They ate and we all die. But some time later, there was another tree. A cross was made from it.  An innocent man was crucified on it.  The man was Jesus.  God said, believe on Jesus and trust Him, and you will surely live.  He wasn’t kidding.  He is God and this was His Son.  The Tree of Life.

“He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree,
that we might die to sin and live to righteousness.
By his wounds you have been healed”
‭1 Peter‬ ‭2‬:‭24‬

Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation;
for you I wait all the day long”

Katy and I saw this ginkgo tree on our road trip to Rome this week.  Have you ever seen a more stunning tree?!  And notice the birds nest in the top right!  I can only imagine that our Creator delights in creating such beauty for us to enjoy!  You can read and see more pictures from our road trip here:  When in Rome.

When in Rome…

November 13, 2014~ Travel

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths”
‭Proverbs‬ ‭3‬:‭5-6‬

Butch and I first visited Rome, Italy in the autumn of 2004.  Let me say, Rome, referred to as “The Eternal City”, did not disappoint.  It’s history spans more than two and a half thousand years!  Amazing is such an understatement in describing its sites:  the Roman Forum, Colosseum, Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica, etc.  And the food….beyond description!!!

The Roman Colosseum is an iconic symbol and one of Rome’s most popular tourist attractions

The Colosseum was completed in 80 AD and could hold, it is estimated, between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators and was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles

Trevi Fountain, completed in 1762, is one of the most famous fountains in the world!  An estimated 3,000 Euros are thrown into the fountain each day. That is 3,731 US dollars!  Coins are supposed to be thrown using the right hand over the left shoulder.  We had to follow tradition!

But…

…did you know that The South has it’s very own Rome?  Katy and I had a girls’ day out on Tuesday and headed over to Rome, Georgia.  And what a fun day–we enjoyed all things Rome!  From a cutesy coffee shop, to Berry College (where we spent the majority of the day), to a great local restaurant and bakery, to ending the day shopping at TJ MAXX, of course!

When we were in Rome, we did as Romans do!

Stay tuned because you know, Rome wasn’t built in a day!

Started our girls’ day out at the eclectic coffee shop, Swift & Finch, with scones and salted caramel lattes!

Loved their American flag proudly displayed on Veterans Day!

Swan Lake on the 26,000 acre campus of Berry College!

Frost Memorial Chapel was built by students in 1937 and features leaded glass windows and a slate roof

The trees surrounding the chapel were at their peak on this most perfect autumn day!

b9

The Old Mill at Berry College was constructed in 1930. The wooden overshot waterwheel is 42 feet in diameter and considered one of the largest in the world!

The log cabin at the Martha Berry Museum.  For more info on the fascinating founder of Berry College read here.

The Ford Dining Hall on the main campus.  The Ford buildings, named for Henry Ford and built with money donated by Ford and his wife, are in an English Gothic style.

Katy and I ate a delightful lunch at The Harvest Moon Cafe, a local “Roman” favorite.  We enjoyed the best house-made pimento dip and tortilla chips.  But, this chandelier really caught my eye.  Look closely and you will see that it is made of forks, spoons, and knives!  So interesting!!

This guy joined us for lunch!

So many choices…

..and the winner is…

The Clocktower, built on top of Neely Hill, is the town’s official symbol!

Girls just wanna have fun!!!

Thank you for joining us on our road trip!  We love your comments!

Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of th Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of the year! I am sharing this merry table that was inspired by @april.cornell Victorian Christmas tablecloth! As an April Cornell brand ambassador I received the beautiful tablecloth and lovely Essential blue napkins. The red and white checkered top lends itself to classic casual elegance. The lovely snowy village on the border of the cloth came to life with a couple of snowy wood slice chargers that are topped with tiny little village shops that my beloved Mother gave me many years ago. They hold a special place in my heart. The salad plates depict Christmas Village scenes and complement the cloth. An easy centerpiece of fresh fruit is nestled atop fresh greens and placed in a Natale bowl by @arteitalicacrownlinen I have joined 17 table stylists for a Christmas Tablescape Blog Hop. Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morn Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morning Blooms. The theme for the July edition is Summer Living! Living in the country, our summer days are filled with outdoor chores, one of which is gardening! My ‘Little Lamb’ panicled hydrangeas are in full bloom and are the star of my simple table setting! The basket holding the hydrangeas is very sentimental. It belonged to my beloved Mother who kept her journals and devotional books in the basket. I often picked up the books and journals to read while visiting my sweet Daddy. Since my Daddy passed away in March, my brother and I are cleaning out our parents home. I just knew the basket was coming home with me! My precious Mother would have loved seeing it filled with flowers! A vintage tablecloth, @april.cornell ‘Eden’ napkins, Portmeirion ‘Botanic Garden’ dinner plates and stemware from Tuesday Morning (many years ago) complete the table!

I am celebrating the red, white, and blue with a table set in the garden with a couple of treats and sweet iced tea for this hot summer day. Precious memories are attached to the checked tablecloth. My beloved Mother prepared Sunday lunch every week until she passed away. Each Sunday was a feast comparable to Thanksgiving. During the summer months, she often used this checked cloth. More delicious meals than I could count have been served on this cloth!

Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer table is in my garden. I decided the table should be simple to allow the hydrangeas to be the star! I always love sharing a ‘special something’ on a table setting that is sentimental and has wonderful memories attached like the majolica pitcher that belonged to my beloved Mother. A beautiful blue and white tablecloth by @april.cornell for @victoriamagazine was a surprise from my sweet husband and also included the ‘blue roses’ tea set which was a part of the limited edition when it was first introduced a few years ago. The Sur La Table floral-patterned earthenware was inspired by London’s Chelsea Flower Show in collaboration with artist, April Cornell. Vintage hobnail milk glass stemware was purchased at the Longest Yard Sale. Sometimes I just enjoy a simple table!

Vintage Fitz and Floyd ‘Herb Garden’ teapots, sugar and creamer, and oval tray are suited for springtime with their embossed bows, vegetables, and words. A bouquet of Kwanzan Cherry blossoms add more spring color to the setting.

I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition of Tea on Tuesdays. My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. As an April Cornell Brand Ambassador, I was gifted these gorgeous linens! I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.

I am serving my favorite, Earl Gray tea, from an Eileen’s Reserve teapot. Teacups by Grace Teaware and vintage Rose Chintz salad plates by Johnson Brothers add more floral patterns to the mix. Japanese Magnolia blooms were cut from my garden and placed in a lilypad teapot!
