Roots That Struck A Cord

October 16, 2014~ Faith, Music

My Guild guitar. A surprise from Pam almost 40 years ago. Truly a treasured instrument.

My Guild guitar. A surprise from Pam almost 40 years ago. Truly a treasured instrument.

As we have said before, music has been a huge part of our everyday living.  And it is a story that has evolved through the years.  Today, I want to share with you my extensive musical background and intense training that most of you are unaware of.  It began when I was 6 and Mother decided I would take piano once each week right after school. (Note I stated “Mother decided”). What a thrill for a boy in first grade at Striplin Elementary!  The school was located where the Gadsden, Alabama public library now stands.  This was 1957.  So, it was convenient to walk 1/2 block to Mrs. Sykes house on the corner of College and Walnut for a half hour of exciting instruction. To a first grader, she had to be at least 90.  I literally hated it for 2 years–not so much the half hour (Mrs. Sykes was a sweet lady), but the practice Mother imposed on the other 6 days!  Mom finally gave in and allowed me to quit.

I later became very thankful for those 2 years.  I learned some very basic and important fundamentals about music.  Mother was a wonderful soprano and loved music.  I think these early days shaped me more than I realized.  I grew to pay attention to music and decided I loved it, too!  I am now very glad that I made that walk to the house on the corner with those red music books in hand!

In a few years, the notion of singing and playing a guitar struck me pretty hard.  I didn’t get a guitar for a while, but finally did get one from Sears.  Yes, Sears!  It was a Kay acoustic.  The strings seemed about 1 inch off the neck and a pair of vice grips were needed to compress them to achieve a sound.  I got so discouraged after a few weeks that I put it away for good, having never learned to make a single chord.  Because of this, it was somewhat difficult a year or two later to convince my grandmother that I could learn to play.  The secret, I told her, rested in owning that burgundy Gibson electric at Gadsden Music Company.  She did eventually buy it for me, and as a bonus, Mr. Green had his guitar teacher give me 8 free lessons as part of the purchase.  That’s been about fifty years and I’m still playing.  I had no idea how this one thing would influence and shape so much of my life–and that’s no exaggeration!

With the decade of the 60’s on us, there was nothing else to do but form a band, and I found three classmates who were on board with the idea!  I suggested each an instrument to play and told them we had to get the resources to purchase what was needed to get started.  And by the way–none of those guys played any instrument and I’d never heard one of them sing!  In all honesty and with all due respect, this is not the way to start a band!  But North Gadsden needed a band.  I came up with a name–“The What Four”.  Can you imagine?!  That’s quite amusing now, but I thought it was creative at the time.  We weren’t so good I don’t suppose, but we had the best time and grew very close as friends during those days.  And it probably helped us stay out of trouble too!  Kids at “sock hops” only needed noise that sounded at least a little like the pop songs on the radio, and we could handle that!  We played cheap, too.  I guess it sounds better to say we were very affordable entertainment!

I am the one in the white shorts (on the right)

In later days and after High School, I played with some other guys and bands as people come and go and take on other interests.  One very talented musician and I became close friends while still in High School.  We shared a lot of music and playing time–sometimes just the two of us in his den.  I plan a special post about him in the future.  I have hundreds of “music stories” I’d love to tell, but you folks don’t have the time to read such.

So,  I’ll conclude this with the most significant and important way God used the music to change my life and direction in ’69 and ’70.  1969 had me searching and not sure about much in life except the fact that I still loved and played the music.  Playing at after school dances and other places was fun and all, but there had to be more.  And there was!

 I providentially made my way to a revival meeting one night in June of 1970 with no interest in church whatsoever.  But later that night, I responded to the love of Christ and the salvation that was mine as a free gift by trusting in Him and what He had done for all of us on a cross.  My search was over!  And I also had a new venue for my music–not right away, but in time.  The next Sunday, I attended church as I now had reason and wanted to know more.  I wasn’t expecting to have music play a role in that first Sunday service, but there she was–a musician, playing the church organ–and she looked really good too!  Both of these facts grabbed my attention.

I had to have a strategy to get her to notice me!  I knew that my approach, somehow, had to be musical. First, it was needful over the next few weeks to make her aware that I was a singer and guitarist, and even better–played in a band!  Girls like guys with guitars, I thought.  I really liked a song that was very popular and getting a lot of radio play that summer, so I bought the old 45 rpm single.  Strangely, the words kept resonating in my brain and I decided one day that this was my message.  I’m really shy and this record could say it for me.  It was risky to show up at a house unannounced to give a girl you’d only known a few weeks a vinyl record.  But I took the chance.  She could easily determine that I was an aggressive weirdo, but she didn’t!  It was her favorite song and she didn’t own it.  I had no idea!

photo 3 (16)

She began to come hear me sing and play.  By that time, I had a Fender Jaguar guitar.  Sunburst! I’d give anything to have it now.  After about a year, I gave up playing in the band.  Some churches in those days frowned on that kind of music.  There was no place in the church for me to use the only instrument I owned and knew how to play.  An electric guitar would never be allowed it seemed, so I eventually sold it, although that was not necessarily a good decision. But, by that time, God had allowed a black piece of vinyl to open a door that changed everything.  Stopping by her house that day in 1970 had been a very good decision!

“My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast!
I will sing and make melody!”
Psalm‬ ‭57‬:‭7‬

Tablescape Tuesday: Reservations For Two Under the Arbor

October 14, 2014~ Food & Entertaining, Tablescape Tuesday

“…yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life?
For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes”

James 4:14

Oftentimes, we are so caught up in the busyness of our everyday living that we ignore what we deem the ordinary until ordinary is no longer present.  After a life changing event in 2007,  I found a day that normally would be called ordinary is actually “extraordinary”!
Today, I challenge you to take time to embrace your “ordinary”–celebrate the small things!  Each day is a gift perfectly wrapped in love from the Heavenly Father!

The arbor now sits in our back yard near our pasture, but not always so.  Shortly after we built our home, Butch constructed the arbor under two large and very old water oaks in our front yard and hung a swing.  It faced our view of the mountain.  Most summer evenings found us sharing conversations and glasses of sweet tea in that swing!  After many years, Butch decided to move it to the back yard and we planted “lady banks” roses to climb the arbor.  In the spring, it is beautifully dressed in hundreds of small yellow roses bursting into bloom!

We placed a table for two underneath with a cranberry toile cloth from Williams Sonoma

I mixed touches of blue with cranberry!  You will often see the white chargers on my tables.  The dinner plate first appeared here in “The Debut of Tablescape Tuesday”. The cranberry glass salad plates are used at Christmas and Valentine’s Day.  The blue stemware was found at Tuesday Morning.  Just a few candles dot the simple table setting with a large candle stand in the background (normally found in our powder room).

Napkin rings can be expensive, so I often make my own.  Bought these stems at Hobby Lobby and hot glued to twine and tied!

I can always find a place for blue vintage jars!  You may remember them from these three previous posts:
The Debut of Tablescape Tuesday
Tablescape Tuesday: The Wedding Edition
The Wedding Edition Part Two

The spider back chairs usually sit in my dining room–they are favorites of mine!

In the foreground is one of the pair of cast iron statues that sit in front of the arbor–a great find!

*

The candle light from the vintage blue jars adds a little touch of whimsy!

A perfect ending to our dinner under the rose arbor is hot chocolate

*

Thankfully, the threatening rain held off until later!

Antique pitcher holding dried flowers from a special occasion

The arbor with its twinkling lights!

“…for ‘In him we live and move and have our being’;
as even some of your own poets have said,
“‘For we are indeed his offspring.’”

In Awe of Autumn

October 13, 2014~ Outdoors

“Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few;
therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest’
Matthew 9:37-38

Country living is at its very finest during the autumn season:
…goldenrods in all of their magnificent glory…
…cotton fields bursting in fluffy white balls…
…round hay bales dotting brown pastures…
…smells of distant wood-burning fireplaces…
…our mountains changing into their beautiful autumnal colors…
…pumpkin spice lattes and pumpkin bread on the patio…
…brilliant sunrises and sunsets painted by our Creator…
…whitetail deer roaming at our woods’ edge…
…cool mornings and warm afternoons!

And today, I want to welcome you to my small country porch during our favorite season. You’ve probably heard “back door guests are best”,  but we would like to propose the idea that “side door guests are best”!  I have a formal (well, not really) entry that is known as the front porch that no one ever uses  because eleven years ago, we took our existing garage and made it into our kitchen.  This became the new entrance into our home and is now the favored entry by all our guests. You may remember this from our earlier post “Our Refuge“. As much as I would like for our guests to use our front entry, I welcome them at our kitchen door into the true heart of our home and our everyday living.

Being small with three columns makes decorating a difficult task (no room for rocking chairs, etc.)!

A view through petunias that are still in bloom!

Thanks to my sweetie for the pumpkin topiary!!

Just a little country family!

A small courtyard near our side entry with local quarried stone.  The English bench is draped with a treasured quilt made by my Mother in the 1980’s, and is obviously not left outdoors.

Our Japanese maple is showing signs of changing color!

This is our detached garage, and is often mistaken as a guest house.  Door wreath was a birthday gift from a friend!

Beautiful mums are the perfect colors of autumn!

Oreo loves his spot on the kitchen porch!!

“Blessed be the name of God forever and ever,
to whom belong wisdom and might.
He changes times and seasons;
he removes kings and sets up kings;
he gives wisdom to the wise
and knowledge to those who have understanding;
he reveals deep and hidden things;
he knows what is in the darkness,
and the light dwells with him.
To you, O God of my fathers,
I give thanks and praise,
for you have given me wisdom and might…”
Daniel 2:20-23

Y’all come back now!

Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of th Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of the year! I am sharing this merry table that was inspired by @april.cornell Victorian Christmas tablecloth! As an April Cornell brand ambassador I received the beautiful tablecloth and lovely Essential blue napkins. The red and white checkered top lends itself to classic casual elegance. The lovely snowy village on the border of the cloth came to life with a couple of snowy wood slice chargers that are topped with tiny little village shops that my beloved Mother gave me many years ago. They hold a special place in my heart. The salad plates depict Christmas Village scenes and complement the cloth. An easy centerpiece of fresh fruit is nestled atop fresh greens and placed in a Natale bowl by @arteitalicacrownlinen I have joined 17 table stylists for a Christmas Tablescape Blog Hop. Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morn Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morning Blooms. The theme for the July edition is Summer Living! Living in the country, our summer days are filled with outdoor chores, one of which is gardening! My ‘Little Lamb’ panicled hydrangeas are in full bloom and are the star of my simple table setting! The basket holding the hydrangeas is very sentimental. It belonged to my beloved Mother who kept her journals and devotional books in the basket. I often picked up the books and journals to read while visiting my sweet Daddy. Since my Daddy passed away in March, my brother and I are cleaning out our parents home. I just knew the basket was coming home with me! My precious Mother would have loved seeing it filled with flowers! A vintage tablecloth, @april.cornell ‘Eden’ napkins, Portmeirion ‘Botanic Garden’ dinner plates and stemware from Tuesday Morning (many years ago) complete the table!

I am celebrating the red, white, and blue with a table set in the garden with a couple of treats and sweet iced tea for this hot summer day. Precious memories are attached to the checked tablecloth. More delicious meals than I could count have been served on this cloth!

Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer table is in my garden. I decided the table should be simple to allow the hydrangeas to be the star! I always love sharing a ‘special something’ on a table setting that is sentimental and has wonderful memories attached like the majolica pitcher that belonged to my beloved Mother. A beautiful blue and white tablecloth by @april.cornell for @victoriamagazine was a surprise from my sweet husband and also included the ‘blue roses’ tea set which was a part of the limited edition when it was first introduced a few years ago. The Sur La Table floral-patterned earthenware was inspired by London’s Chelsea Flower Show in collaboration with artist, April Cornell. I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bodily resurrection enables all those who choose to follow Him to have assured victory over our greatest enemy…death!

 I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition of Tea on Tuesdays. My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. As an April Cornell Brand Ambassador, I was gifted these gorgeous linens! I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.

I am serving my favorite, Earl Gray tea, from an Eileen’s Reserve teapot. Teacups by Grace Teaware and vintage Rose Chintz salad plates by Johnson Brothers add more floral patterns to the mix. Japanese Magnolia blooms were cut from my garden and placed in a lilypad teapot!
