Autumn’s First Full Day

September 24, 2014~ Outdoors

Things are starting to change- again. It’s nice to live where we can enjoy four distinct seasons, and also what I call sub-seasons–you know, the transitional days where one is beginning to fade and the replacement hasn’t arrived in full force. With that in mind, we spent a few minutes in our yard and took a very short drive. How about some examples of everyday living around our place on the first full calendar day of Autumn 2014…

“If I had a day that I could give you, I’d give to you a day just like today…”
“Sunshine on My Shoulders“, John Denver

This water oak in our yard is beginning to show some real signs of old age with a few more dead limbs each year. It’s been around a lot more years than I have but still produces hundreds of acorns. The local deer herd loves this tree! I guess we could name it “Gnarly” because of all the roots.

Our nearest neighbor has a serious flag pole and we enjoy seeing “Old Glory” flying every day as we pass by. The sky seemed to have a little “extra blue” as a backdrop on this first day of fall.

The southern end of the Appalachians are right out front as we look north. The mountain doesn’t reveal a lot of change just yet, but autumn colors are not too many days away!

Turkeytown Creek– The main attraction of Turkey Beach and Resort. We cross the creek almost every day and I’m reminded of days back in the 60’s when we might slide into the water at this very spot and really cool down. I mean- this water is freezing in mid-July!

Turkeytown is named for Chief Turkey. Yes, it’s a real place named after a real person!

The last full moon was considered the “Harvest Moon”. I understand this is the name given the full moon nearest the autumnal equinox (which occurred yesterday). A soybean field begins to turn and will soon be ready to harvest. The mountain in the background is actually in the next county.

photo9

The fields are almost “white unto harvest” but it is a little early for cotton. I can remember when a first cousin of mine got out of school for 2 weeks in October for “cotton pickin’ “. He lived in Cherokee County Alabama and we lived in adjacent Etowah County (still do). Etowah didn’t observe cotton pickin’. Nothin’ fair about that! This cotton is near our house in Etowah County. Modern machinery did away with getting out of school but I think everybody gets a Fall Break of some sort!

tractor2 photo 3

It was great to watch the guys in action today in the nearby corn fields. They were getting it done in a big way. Nothing runs like a Deere! A common September sight around here.

Right down the road we find a crop that is not quite so commonplace. Beautiful grapes are doing well at a local vineyard. And no, these are not muscadine or scuppernong vines. We understand the vines here were brought in from Napa. (California, not auto parts). Wow!

This may be one of the best unobstructed views of the Coosa River. This is one place where we can look straight down the middle of the river from a high vantage point and also have the Appalachians’ Lookout Mountain standing tall behind the scene. We didn’t make this photo from a helicopter and it is advisable to take care when taking photos from this spot!

Yellow is dominant right now and the goldenrod is king and queen of the countryside.

“Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest.”
John 4:35

Tablescape Tuesday: Bringing Tuscany to Turkeytown

September 23, 2014~ Food & Entertaining, Tablescape Tuesday, Travel

“On the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate”
Psalm 145:5

After reading Frances Mayes memoir, “Under the Tuscan Sun”, it became a dream of mine to visit Tuscany.  Finally, in 2004, we made our first trip!  On that trip, we visited Florence (the birthplace of the Renaissance),  San Gimignano (known as the Town of Fine Towers), and Siena (likely Italy’s loveliest medieval city).  In 2010, when we returned to Tuscany, we sailed into the port city of Livorno (on the Ligurian Sea).  Next, we traveled to Lucca (known for it’s Renaissance-era city walls), and to the nearby town of Torre del Lago (where we visited the Italian composer Puccini’s home).  And of course a trip to Tuscany would not be complete without a visit to Pisa, to see the famous leaning tower!

As I am writing this post, it is the first day of Autumn.  The beautiful colors of this, my favorite season, always take me back to those trips, namely the gorgeous color palette of the Tuscan villas and landscape: burnt umber and sienna, terra-cotta, and golden honey.

So, on this beautiful Autumn morning, I hope you will enjoy my version of how Tuscany meets Turkeytown!

You’ve Got a Friend…

September 18, 2014~ Faith

“A friend loves at all times…”
Proverbs 17:17

As summer quickly fades into autumn, I am reminded of the seasons in our life. The “spring“ of our journey stretches from childhood throughout the teen years when we are carefree and without responsibility. “Summer” begins with all its possibilities and promises. So quickly, summer is gone and we begin the “autumn” of life when, just as the leaves begin to change, so do our lives. Finally it is winter and the cold wind begins to blow– doors begin to close. Suddenly, most of life is in the past! But the good news is this: “everyday living, Jesus understands“. As the seasons have changed, God has always given me friends to do life with. While running on Tuesday morning, The Lord prompted me to share some of my friendships with you beginning with my first “real” friend.  This is our story…

My very first deep friendship began in my sixth grade year. A pretty and quiet girl that I had known since we began first grade started attending my church, along with her family. We instantly became friends! As students in the same classroom, we shared a passion for reading. We would go to the library or bookmobile (does anyone remember?) and check out as many books as they allowed, which would always include a Lois Lenski book. This common interest bonded us, along with a love for music. We loved the “top 40” music of the day and started attending WVOK’s “Shower of Stars” (again, does that bring back memories?). We were just two star struck teen-age girls in love with Lou Christie and Mark Lindsay of Paul Revere and the Raiders! (Am I dating myself?) During junior high school, we were cheerleaders and enjoyed pizza at Pasquale’s on Friday evenings and movies at the Pitman Theatre. She drove her parents Volkswagon and we went everywhere together in High School–we could drive all week for a dollar! But our friendship was so much deeper than the fun times as teens.

Fast forward to 1973, my best friend was my maid of honor at our wedding. She could not have been happier for me that I found my life partner. Even though I was now married and she was single, we remained best friends. We didn’t have as much time to talk, but when we did, it was as if no time had passed- we just picked up where we had left off! I began teaching a ladies Sunday School Class and we enjoyed studying God’s Word together. She had an amazing knowledge of scripture and insights into Biblical truths. For the next decade plus, we continued to share our books, our music, and our everyday living at lunch, over the phone, or quick visits.

But in the late 1980’s she was handed devastating news of a rare blood disease. I watched as she suffered horrendous episodes of failing health and as her husband abandoned their marriage. But never once as the storms clouds gathered in her life did I see her lose her joy. How can that be? Her joy and hope were secure in her relationship with The Lord! Jesus Understands. She knew that she could take the cares and anxieties of this world to him and he understood. She knew that he had walked this earth and had experienced the same burdens, heartaches, and abandonment that she was facing. As her condition weakened, she decided to take the medical team’s advice and seek a bone marrow transplant in Seattle in the summer of 1996. While there, she became gravely ill and lapsed into a coma. I would call and her sisters would hold the phone to her ear as I read scripture and prayed. Even though unconscious, they said she would always respond to my voice. My best friend passed away in late August. She was only forty-two.

As I prepared to give the eulogy and sing the old hymn “Blessed Assurance Jesus is Mine” at her memorial service, I thought about her godly character, and why she would choose me as a friend. We never had a cross word in thirty plus years. Why? Not because I am easy to get along with, but because she was. She allowed me to be the boss! She always applauded any successes that I had. She was my biggest cheerleader. She stood quietly in the shadows and allowed me to have my day in the sun, while she smiled and rejoiced with me. Not once did I ever sense one ounce of jealousy in our friendship. To this day, eighteen years later, I miss her beauty, her contagious smile, and her gentle and quiet spirit. Cathy taught me much about friendship. I pray that I never forget her lessons.

One of the many books Cathy gave me with its inscription that always brings tears

“Oil and perfume make the heart glad, and the sweetness of a friend comes from his earnest counsel”
Proverbs 27:9

Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of th Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of the year! I am sharing this merry table that was inspired by @april.cornell Victorian Christmas tablecloth! As an April Cornell brand ambassador I received the beautiful tablecloth and lovely Essential blue napkins. The red and white checkered top lends itself to classic casual elegance. The lovely snowy village on the border of the cloth came to life with a couple of snowy wood slice chargers that are topped with tiny little village shops that my beloved Mother gave me many years ago. They hold a special place in my heart. The salad plates depict Christmas Village scenes and complement the cloth. An easy centerpiece of fresh fruit is nestled atop fresh greens and placed in a Natale bowl by @arteitalicacrownlinen I have joined 17 table stylists for a Christmas Tablescape Blog Hop. Living in the country, our summer days are filled with outdoor chores, one of which is gardening! My ‘Little Lamb’ panicled hydrangeas are in full bloom and are the star of my simple table setting! The basket holding the hydrangeas is very sentimental. It belonged to my beloved Mother who kept her journals and devotional books in the basket. I often picked up the books and journals to read while visiting my sweet Daddy. Since my Daddy passed away in March, my brother and I are cleaning out our parents home. I just knew the basket was coming home with me! My precious Mother would have loved seeing it filled with flowers! A vintage tablecloth, @april.cornell ‘Eden’ napkins, Portmeirion ‘Botanic Garden’ dinner plates and stemware from Tuesday Morning (many years ago) complete the table!

I decided the table should be simple to allow the hydrangeas to be the star! I always love sharing a ‘special something’ on a table setting that is sentimental and has wonderful memories attached like the majolica pitcher that belonged to my beloved Mother. A beautiful blue and white tablecloth by @april.cornell for @victoriamagazine was a surprise from my sweet husband and also included the ‘blue roses’ tea set which was a part of the limited edition when it was first introduced a few years ago. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.
