Tablescape Tuesday– Summer’s Happy Ending!

September 9, 2014~ Food & Entertaining, Tablescape Tuesday

With the days of summer coming to an end, I wanted to “squeeze” in one last tablescape of the season!  To me, the colors in this tablescape are just happy!

(Make sure you scroll all the way down for a sweet treat!)

I have always loved the crisp look of blue and white mixed with a sunny yellow.  The dinner plates are “Willow” by Johnson Brothers.  The tablecloth was my first linen purchase as a new bride forty-one years ago.  Placemats add texture and were found at TJ Maxx.

Katy’s Nana grew these glorious zinnias in her garden

The stemware was ordered from Horchow and they remain a favorite

Several years back, my Sunday School class took an outing to the Botanical Gardens in Huntsville, AL where I found these sweet hand painted clay pots used as my napkin holders.

Fresh from the oven, Lemon Rosemary Shortbread with a tall glass of sweet tea.  Butch and I love this recipe!

Thanks for visiting with us on our patio!

Lemon Rosemary Shortbread

3/4 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar
1 tablespoon grated lemon zest
2 teaspoons fresh minced rosemary
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt

In a medium bowl, beat butter and sugar at a medium-high speed with a mixer until creamy. Add lemon zest and rosemary, beating until combined.  In a small bowl combine flour and salt.  Gradually add to butter mixture, beating until combined.  Shape mixture into 2 (10-inch) logs; wrap in plastic wrap and chill for 1 hour.  Preheat oven to 350.  Line baking sheets with parchment paper.  Unwrap dough, and cut into 1/3 inch-thick slices.  Bake for 11 minutes or until edges are lightly browned.  Let cool on pans for 2 minutes.  Remove from pans and cool completely on wire racks.  Store in an airtight container for up to 1 week.

“May mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you”

Triple Creek Ranch: A Montana Hideaway (Part One)

September 8, 2014~ Outdoors, Travel

“America the Beautiful” is an understatement. But how can you completely and adequately describe such a vast and varied land as America in a 3 minute song? A trip we recently made to Montana elevated our senses, once again, to God’s indescribable creation! We experienced “purple mountain majesties” and had daily reminders of why Montana is “Big Sky” country.

“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork”
Psalm 19:1

The Triple Creek Ranch is hidden away in Montana’s Bitterroot Mountains near Darby. The Bitterroot River runs nearby through the valley that stretches north and south near the Idaho border. What a privilege for us, as a family, to spend a few days at Triple Creek! The place is breathtaking and the people (the staff that we prefer to call the “ranch family”) make sure you get the most from your visit.

Have you ever said  “that’s something I’ve always wanted to do”? We have probably all made that statement a few times. No doubt those things we dream about doing are different for each of us.  But with so much to do at Triple Creek, chances are you will do something you’ve always wanted!

With so much to see and explore at Triple Creek, we will divide our experience into two blog segments.  We hope you enjoy the journey and invite you to come back for the sequel!

I made our reservations for Triple Creek in August 2013.  Who knew that they would be named the number one hotel in the world in the July publication of Travel and Leisure Magazine?!

(If anyone needs travel advice just give me a call- haha!)

All of the guests at Triple Creek were invited to the owners’ home for dinner.   We dined at the table in the foreground with a beautiful lake and mountain vista.  Craig and Barbara Barrett were such gracious hosts and they both have intriguing bios!  Craig was CEO of Intel and Barbara was Ambassador to Finland and a trained astronaut.

Our Refuge

September 5, 2014~ Decorating

A refuge is a place of peace and protection. It’s a place to escape the anxiety and stress of everyday living, and to just “be”. We have found such a place- our kitchen! We not only nourish our bodies, but we energize our souls and refresh our emotions. We have found it to be a place to talk and listen, read and pray, laugh and cry, plan and reflect, cook and eat in our “refuge”.

Our kitchen has welcomed family and friends, and yes, even strangers through the years. And we find such joy in doing so–it is truly “the heart” of our home! Today, we invite you to come in and join us. Please sit back and have a cup of coffee in the room that we share stories of God’s goodness and memories of places visited.  As you see the pictures, you will get even more of a glimpse into our everyday living.  Our “refuge” was previously a two car garage. Eleven years ago we transformed the space into our kitchen and laundry room–very little has changed over the years. Therefore, it is a room full of timeless memories and treasured gifts. Everything– down to the tiniest detail– holds sentimental value and has a story to tell!  But above all, it is our hope that our “refuge ” reflects God’s mercy and his love!

We have, indeed, tasted the goodness of God!

“Oh, taste and see that The Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!”
Psalm 34:8

The eight foot island is perfect for a buffet

Our favorite place to sit, read, pray, and just spend time together.  Spode “Woodland” plates surround the French painting on the wall. The prints above the lamps are from Old Jerusalem, and between the chairs sits a country French chest.

Another view of our sitting area with the patterned hooked rug

Glazed English tiles make up the backsplash and I found the decorative towel at my most frequented stop, TJ Maxx!

The first place you can find me each morning– my coffee and espresso nook!

Vietri bowl and Italian canister setr11Antique hand-painted muffin stand

Double ovens and a warming drawer have become a necessity for holidays and family dinners!  A framed photo of my Mother sits in the space to the right as a reminder of her gift of hospitality and love for cooking.

The antique pine desk is a treasured gift from my friend, Patti.  The juxtaposition of the silver service and the country desk, along with the colorful fruit pattern of the Schumacher fabric and bamboo shades makes for an interesting little corner! The pair of prints (barely visible) are from Tallinn, Estonia.

The four prints were a street find in Paris!

and spread your protection over them,
that those who love your name may exult in you.”

Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of th Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of the year! I am sharing this merry table that was inspired by @april.cornell Victorian Christmas tablecloth! As an April Cornell brand ambassador I received the beautiful tablecloth and lovely Essential blue napkins. The red and white checkered top lends itself to classic casual elegance. The lovely snowy village on the border of the cloth came to life with a couple of snowy wood slice chargers that are topped with tiny little village shops that my beloved Mother gave me many years ago. They hold a special place in my heart. The salad plates depict Christmas Village scenes and complement the cloth. An easy centerpiece of fresh fruit is nestled atop fresh greens and placed in a Natale bowl by @arteitalicacrownlinen I have joined 17 table stylists for a Christmas Tablescape Blog Hop. Autumn is my favorite season and my favorite time to set tables in my garden! Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morn Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morning Blooms. The theme for the July edition is Summer Living! Living in the country, our summer days are filled with outdoor chores, one of which is gardening! My ‘Little Lamb’ panicled hydrangeas are in full bloom and are the star of my simple table setting! The basket holding the hydrangeas is very sentimental. It belonged to my beloved Mother who kept her journals and devotional books in the basket. I often picked up the books and journals to read while visiting my sweet Daddy. Since my Daddy passed away in March, my brother and I are cleaning out our parents home. I just knew the basket was coming home with me! My precious Mother would have loved seeing it filled with flowers! A vintage tablecloth, @april.cornell ‘Eden’ napkins, Portmeirion ‘Botanic Garden’ dinner plates and stemware from Tuesday Morning (many years ago) complete the table!

Happy July! 2025 is half over, and where did it go Happy July! 2025 is half over, and where did it go? I am celebrating the red, white, and blue with a table set in the garden with a couple of treats and sweet iced tea for this hot summer day. Precious memories are attached to the checked tablecloth. My beloved Mother prepared Sunday lunch every week until she passed away. Each Sunday was a feast comparable to Thanksgiving. During the summer months, she often used this checked cloth. More delicious meals than I could count have been served on this cloth!

Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer table is in my garden. I decided the table should be simple to allow the hydrangeas to be the star! I always love sharing a ‘special something’ on a table setting that is sentimental and has wonderful memories attached like the majolica pitcher that belonged to my beloved Mother. A beautiful blue and white tablecloth by @april.cornell for @victoriamagazine was a surprise from my sweet husband and also included the ‘blue roses’ tea set which was a part of the limited edition when it was first introduced a few years ago. The Sur La Table floral-patterned earthenware was inspired by London’s Chelsea Flower Show in collaboration with artist, April Cornell. Vintage hobnail milk glass stemware was purchased at the Longest Yard Sale. Sometimes I just enjoy a simple table!

The table is enhanced by views toward the mountain, woodlands, and the large Snowball Viburnum. The verdant rye grass appears as a green carpet that has been spread for Easter! Vintage Fitz and Floyd ‘Herb Garden’ teapots, sugar and creamer, and oval tray are suited for springtime with their embossed bows, vegetables, and words. A bouquet of Kwanzan Cherry blossoms add more spring color to the setting.

Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our woodlands and this is the first one of the season, an Easter/Spring table! I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bodily resurrection enables all those who choose to follow Him to have assured victory over our greatest enemy…death!

I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

A fluffle of moss bunnies hopped up to the picnic table. A ‘Charming’ tablecloth with Mary Lake-Thompson napkins and Williams Sonoma enchanting ‘Famille Rose’ bunny plates!

I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition of Tea on Tuesdays. My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. As an April Cornell Brand Ambassador, I was gifted these gorgeous linens! I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.

I am serving my favorite, Earl Gray tea, from an Eileen’s Reserve teapot. Teacups by Grace Teaware and vintage Rose Chintz salad plates by Johnson Brothers add more floral patterns to the mix. Japanese Magnolia blooms were cut from my garden and placed in a lilypad teapot!
