The Debut of Tablescape Tuesday

August 12, 2014~ Food & Entertaining, Tablescape Tuesday

“Like apples of gold in a setting of silver…”

These words are taken from Proverbs 25:11. Even though the verse is referring to a fitly spoken word, the imagery is of a beautiful still life setting. My Mother was the very best example in preparing me to have friends and family sit at our table and enjoy fellowship. The most important thing to her was to make people welcome in her home, but more importantly, at her table. She always used a neatly pressed tablecloth and napkins and I cannot recall her ever using paper plates or cups! She taught me to always use the very best I have and not put it away to collect dust. Nothing against any who use paper items, but use your “good stuff” in your everyday living! Using your very best is such a great way to show your family, the most important people in your life, how special they truly are!

Many of you have encouraged me to share my table settings and entertaining ideas with you on our blog. I am excited to share with you one of the things I love doing the most! I am not promising a post on tablescaping every Tuesday, but will do my best.

This past Saturday night, we celebrated the birthday of our beautiful daughter-in-love, Allison. I always begin a birthday setting with the person being celebrated in mind. I usually decide on the china first, then the centerpiece. From there, I begin to have a vision of how I want the table to look. I decided on a simple plan with very little layering. The only thing I purchased was fresh pink roses from the grocery store. Everything else was in my supply of “stuff” that I have accumulated over the past 40+ years. Inexpensive items made up the majority of the setting. The china was purchased 4 or 5 years ago from Tuesday morning. The silver plate flatware was a gift from my Mother.  The table runner, cotton napkins, and crystal candlesticks came from TJ Maxx. In other words, nothing expensive.

Katy found the blue Mason jars at the longest yard sale this past Saturday.

The country French figurines were borrowed from the chest in my foyer and used for the setting. Always look around your home to see what you can use for your tablescape.

I treasure these beautiful crocheted napkin rings made years ago by a sweet and godly lady that was a blessing in my life, Mrs. Ruby Bradley.

Always remember, the most important part of your setting is the faces and laughter of those seated around your table…

Austin Thrills & Texas Hills

August 10, 2014~ Travel

As a developer, Butch often travels and occasionally I tag along.  A couple of weeks ago we flew to Austin, TX for business and added a couple of days for pleasure.  Since the conference hotel was fully booked, I made reservations at the historic Driskill that opened in 1886.  What a little gem we discovered and a better price than the convention hotel!

We still have places we’d like to visit someday, but this part of Texas was not on the list.  Australia yes, but Austin?  Not that we had heard anything negative about this part of the world, we just didn’t know much about the region.  A little research and then a few days to roam revealed to us that Austin, San Antonio, and the Hill Country all have much to offer and plenty of surprises!  July would not be our recommended month of travel, but you take opportunities as they come!

As an interior decorator, I pay attention to details.  Just those special touches can make a huge statement.  The Driskill Hotel took extra care to add those little details.

While Butch attended his meetings, the temperatures soared to 103. I busied myself inside reading, journaling, and tasting a few things the local places had to offer.   I discovered a neat bookstore with a refreshing lavender lemonade & hibiscus mint tea.  The two didn’t mix in the cup, and I still cannot figure out how! I am sure it is some chemistry thing that I don’t understand.

I imagined myself being in a Parisian cafe, as I sat in this little nook with its marble topped table, white rose, French roast coffee, fresh fruit, banana-walnut bread, and a new book on travel and food. Bliss!

The Texas State Capitol is quite impressive!  Built in the 1880’s, it is the sixth tallest State Capitol building and one of a few that is taller than the U.S. Capitol in Washington.  Now listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the complex sits on 50+ acres just south of the University of Texas “hook ’em horns” campus.

Texas-sized waffle enjoyed in 1886 Cafe. “Everything really is bigger…”

Gruene (pronounced Green) is a small, but charming historic area on the north edge of New Braunfels. Much to see here and it seems to attract thousands of visitors each year. The general store alone is worth a stop!

We had heard stories about the Alamo that suggested there was not much to see– some even said they would skip it altogether.  We are so glad we decided to go because to the contrary, we found it very interesting and rich in history.  Certainly the compound doesn’t cover a square mile and take hours to see, but it was well worth our time.  Maybe our low expectations caused us to be pleasantly surprised.

Rudy’s famous Texas bar-b-que has quite a reputation!  We visited the original, which is just northwest of San Antonio.  This place was a hoot!  Your plate is a piece of freezer paper they tear off and hand to you while you are in line to pick up your food.  Seating is on your own inside (or outside if you can bare the heat), at any of the long communal tables, all covered in red checked plastic.  And by the way, the food was great with the best creamed corn you’ll ever put in your mouth!

Bandera calls itself “The Cowboy Capital of the World”.  It is said that the idea of “dude” ranches originated here.

Both of us being history buffs, we really enjoyed touring the ranch known as the Texas White House during Lyndon Johnson’s presidency. The Johnson era as President coincided with our pre-teen/teenage years, and our everyday living in those young days did not consist of political thoughts or even following the nightly network news.  It was neat to put eyes on the place where he spent roughly 25% of his presidency.  At the ranch, you can drive a marked route and stop at a number of places at your leisure.  Amazingly, you can take the tour in your own vehicle at no charge! The only charge is $3 per person to take a guided tour of the Johnson ranch house.  The tour only takes a few minutes and you don’t want to miss it!

Vineyards in the Texas Hill Country, who knew? Peach orchards also dotted the landscape.

Most of us know Luckenbach only through the lyrics of a Waylon Jennings song.  Since it’s not officially a town, being unincorporated, the best description comes from the terminology found in the Luckenbach Moon, a regular publication from Luchenbach, that coins it “a state of mind”.  To describe it as interesting would be a gross understatement.  It is almost guaranteed that if you stay very long, music will fill the air.  In reality, you could make the rounds with a short 10 minute walk, hop in, or on your ride, and be on your way.  But the place captures you and gives no choice but to stay a little longer.  We love their slogan:  “Everybody is somebody in Luckenbach”.

Not Waylon and Willie, but "some of the boys"

Not Waylon and Willie, but “some of the boys”

“I will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever.  Every day I will bless you and praise your name forever and ever.

Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.”

Why Everyday Living?

August 3, 2014~ Everyday Living

Not only is every person on the planet as different as snowflakes, we all experience great differences in everyday living. No two lives the same, no two days exactly alike. “Everyday Living“ is the title of a song written in the early 90’s. The lyrics came from simple observances and knowledge of a few things going on in daily lives of friends and acquaintances.  Of the millions of daily experiences, you can only pick a few to write about in a 3 or 4 minute song. One unique thing about this inexhaustible list of life’s events is that there is One who understands, relates to, and is completely aware of each of them. Life by life, year by year, month by month, day by day, and moment by moment.

The expected and the unexpected; all a part of everyday living. We hope to share some of our everyday living, past and present, as we continue this journey.

And in time, maybe we will include all the lyrics to the song that gave rise to this idea.

Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of th Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of the year! I am sharing this merry table that was inspired by @april.cornell Victorian Christmas tablecloth! As an April Cornell brand ambassador I received the beautiful tablecloth and lovely Essential blue napkins. The red and white checkered top lends itself to classic casual elegance. The lovely snowy village on the border of the cloth came to life with a couple of snowy wood slice chargers that are topped with tiny little village shops that my beloved Mother gave me many years ago. They hold a special place in my heart. The salad plates depict Christmas Village scenes and complement the cloth. An easy centerpiece of fresh fruit is nestled atop fresh greens and placed in a Natale bowl by @arteitalicacrownlinen I have joined 17 table stylists for a Christmas Tablescape Blog Hop. Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morn Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morning Blooms. The theme for the July edition is Summer Living! Living in the country, our summer days are filled with outdoor chores, one of which is gardening! My ‘Little Lamb’ panicled hydrangeas are in full bloom and are the star of my simple table setting! The basket holding the hydrangeas is very sentimental. It belonged to my beloved Mother who kept her journals and devotional books in the basket. I often picked up the books and journals to read while visiting my sweet Daddy. Since my Daddy passed away in March, my brother and I are cleaning out our parents home. I just knew the basket was coming home with me! My precious Mother would have loved seeing it filled with flowers! A vintage tablecloth, @april.cornell ‘Eden’ napkins, Portmeirion ‘Botanic Garden’ dinner plates and stemware from Tuesday Morning (many years ago) complete the table!

Happy July! 2025 is half over, and where did it go Happy July! 2025 is half over, and where did it go? I am celebrating the red, white, and blue with a table set in the garden with a couple of treats and sweet iced tea for this hot summer day. Precious memories are attached to the checked tablecloth. My beloved Mother prepared Sunday lunch every week until she passed away. Each Sunday was a feast comparable to Thanksgiving. During the summer months, she often used this checked cloth. More delicious meals than I could count have been served on this cloth!

Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer table is in my garden. I decided the table should be simple to allow the hydrangeas to be the star! I always love sharing a ‘special something’ on a table setting that is sentimental and has wonderful memories attached like the majolica pitcher that belonged to my beloved Mother. A beautiful blue and white tablecloth by @april.cornell for @victoriamagazine was a surprise from my sweet husband and also included the ‘blue roses’ tea set which was a part of the limited edition when it was first introduced a few years ago. The Sur La Table floral-patterned earthenware was inspired by London’s Chelsea Flower Show in collaboration with artist, April Cornell. Vintage hobnail milk glass stemware was purchased at the Longest Yard Sale. Sometimes I just enjoy a simple table!

The table is enhanced by views toward the mountain, woodlands, and the large Snowball Viburnum. The verdant rye grass appears as a green carpet that has been spread for Easter! Vintage Fitz and Floyd ‘Herb Garden’ teapots, sugar and creamer, and oval tray are suited for springtime with their embossed bows, vegetables, and words. A bouquet of Kwanzan Cherry blossoms add more spring color to the setting.

I am serving a simple teatime with Earl Grey tea, savory egg salad filled phyllo cups, and sweet vanilla cupcakes with cream cheese icing, and macarons! A favorite cottage rose tablecloth and Essential napkins are by April Cornell.

Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our woodlands and this is the first one of the season, an Easter/Spring table! I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bodily resurrection enables all those who choose to follow Him to have assured victory over our greatest enemy…death!

I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

A fluffle of moss bunnies hopped up to the picnic table. A ‘Charming’ tablecloth with Mary Lake-Thompson napkins and Williams Sonoma enchanting ‘Famille Rose’ bunny plates!

I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition of Tea on Tuesdays. My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. As an April Cornell Brand Ambassador, I was gifted these gorgeous linens! I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.
