My Dream Cabin In The Woods

September 7, 2015~ Decorating

“For behold, he who forms the mountains and creates the wind, and declares to man what is his thought, who makes the morning darkness, and treads on the heights of the earth— the Lord, the God of hosts, is his name!”
‭‭Amos‬ ‭4:13‬ ‭

It’s the last unofficial day of Summer, and we are at the turn of another season!  Before you know it, we will be putting away the shorts & sandals and pulling out the sweaters & boots!  Here in Northeast Alabama, I love that we are able to experience four definite seasons!  Although each one offers a different gift to our senses, Autumn remains my favorite!  Life seems to slow down because of shorter sunny days that give way to crisp fall evenings.  Have you stopped to notice how our Creator paints the bluest skies with puffy white clouds?  Or how He brushes the leaves with shades of orange, gold, and red?  Oh, how His glory is always on display!

The autumnal months are ones that we have made trips to places like Blackberry Farm nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains near Walland, Tennessee and Old Edwards Inn in Highlands, North Carolina.  These are two of our special places to enjoy the beauty of God’s creation with a respite from all the busyness of everyday living!  We have also been privileged to visit the Colorado Rockies many times and last year we enjoyed the beauty of Montana’s Bitterroot Valley at Triple Creek Ranch!  These places have their own special beauty in different mountainous areas of the United States and  invoke the warmth of a crackling fire, a steaming mug of hot chocolate, and a good book to read!

When Butch and I first bought our fifteen acres of land, we considered building a small log cabin to live in before building the home we are in now.  We also considered buying a cabin in Mentone, AL a few years ago, but plans changed!  Maybe by now, you are seeing that my idea of a perfect place to retire would be something like this:  a cabin in the mountains with a clear, flowing stream, hardwood trees with beautiful fall foliage.  The cabin would be rustic with a cozy stone fireplace, wide plank floors, large porches…oh, I could go on and on!  But I think what draws me to the idea of a mountain cabin the most is the natural beauty all around and the calm life that go along with it!

Since I equate Fall with my dream cabin in the woods, I wanted to share one that matches my style!  This mountain home that we are about to tour was constructed from two log cabins that dated to the turn of the 19th century!  They were relocated from Tennessee to Cashiers, North Carolina.  This dream log home was one of Charles Faudree’s last projects before he passed away!  You can see my earlier post on his work here: It’s All In The Mix! I wouldn’t have any trouble moving in! Let’s take a look… A connecting hall links the two cabins.  Butch loves hunting, so the white-tail deer mounts caught my eye and are a perfect welcome to this log cabin.  The covey of quail patterned Scalamandre fabric on the antique chairs sets a theme for rustic, but elegant interiors.  I have used this fabric for a client’s home and it is always a classic, and one I never tire of! I am smitten by the laurel branch stair well in the living room!  The hand-hewn log walls, wide plank floors, and botanical fabrics add to the cozy and casual feel of the home!Warm rust tones, woodsy greens, and autumn golds give the log cabin a sense of the fall season!  The custom antler chandeliers mix beautifully with the more formal corner cabinets.  The French chairs upholstered in plaid and leather complement the rustic dining table!
Rustic custom cabinets and antique treasures fill the kitchen! The kitchen has a French country farmhouse feel.  The piece de resistance is the French butcher’s shop table.  Above the table is a collection of copper saucepans and Spode “woodland” plates! More “Woodland” transfer ware and silver serving pieces on the granite topped island! An antique French buffet with marble serves as a bar.  Rose Cumming wallpaper in an “acorn” pattern adorns the wall! A pair of trumeau mirrors flank an oil painting over the bed in the master bedroom!  Treasured antiques blend seamlessly with rough hewn logs and chinking! The plaid upholstered chair along with the window treatments work well with the antique French cabinet and starburst mirror! Antique blue-and-white plates and a gilded mirror hang on rough log walls above a painted chest
The outdoor living area with its stone fireplace, antler chandelier, and laurel branch railings provides a sanctuary for quiet dinners or entertaining a crowd! The front porch looks out on the lake with a custom swing covered in burlap and a pair of red rattan chairs!  What a peaceful spot for reading!

Designer Spotlight: Charles Faudree • It’s All In The Mix!

June 1, 2015~ Decorating, Designer Spotlight

“And the effect of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust forever”
Isaiah‬ ‭32‬:‭17‬

If you know French Country design, the name Charles Faudree probably rings a bell. I remember being captivated by Faudree’s unmatched talent the first time I saw his work in an edition of Traditional Home in the late 80’s!  Since then, I have followed all of the national publications of his work and have all six of his books in my collection!  IMG_2749As an interior decorator, I pored over every picture and paid attention to the tiniest details of every room that he designed, in hopes to learn from the master of Country French design!  It was only a few months after his first design book, “Charles Faudree’s French Country Signature”, was released that he was invited to my city to speak to a group at the country club.  He was so gracious to answer questions and autograph his book!  He could not have been kinder as he took time to chat with me.  In his own words he said, “I would like to think I have elevated French Country to a fine art,” …and that he did! IMG_2747Faudree passed away last November and many fellow bloggers have featured his work since.  I have been so inspired by his distinctive ability to mix: past and present, old and new, rustic and refined…all of which create his coveted style of casual, understated elegance!  Today,  I want to share some of his amazing talent with you, my readers!  When asked to define his style, he responded, “Oh, it’s all in the mix, not the match!”   I seemed to have adopted that design philosophy!

The following photos were taken from my Pinterest board, Charles Faudree. Each photo is linked to the original source.

Many things catch my eye…bookcases, tole chandelier, the antique gate leg table with stacks of books!
“Part of the charm of a living room is a skillful blend of rustic and refined antiques and furnishings, with fabrics, colors, collections, and accessories that create a beautiful, cohesive room.”
C. Faudree
A house in the Caribbean with its living room beautifully dressed in classic blue and white with a mix of fabrics!A pair of Louis XIV-style gilt wood tables in a traditional styled room with a splendid chandelier and luxurious fabrics!
A lighter touch in this room!
“Furnishings used in pairs add elegance to a room.”
C. Faudree
Faudree was a master of layering his rooms!  They unfold before your eyes!
“Comfortable seating should never be a victim of great style.”
C. Faudree
A beautifully appointed rustic room with stone fireplace, antler chandelier, and warm wood walls and ceiling! French chairs, florals, plaids, needlepoint pillows, and books make an inviting sitting  area in a bay window!
“Personal items add flavor to decorating.”
C. Faudree
A perfect example of the mix and not the match – French antiques with a lucite table! A lovely light-filled breakfast room with the piece de resistance-a Swedish secretary!
A French daybed in front of the fireplace with bergeres on either side with a collection of exquisite tortoise shell boxes atop the tea table! Faudree often used Country French commodes and trumeau mirrors!   I would love dining in this room with the whimsical book shelves and the coral accents! “Details are like frosting on the cake, and who doesn’t like frosting best?”
C. Faudree
Coral inspired bedroom!  Cozy and country with warm furnishing!“Too much is never enough”
C. Faudree
Bold buffalo checks, ticking stripes, florals, and toile fabrics mix together for a lovely guest room! Lush window treatments and bedding with soft colors in a spacious master bedroom! Faudree often used red toile…the perfect small bedroom
“Accessories are as important as the furniture itself.”
C. Faudree
Once again…it is about the mix! A powder room with a Provençal chest used as a vanity and French toile wallpaper An inviting living room in the French Country style of which Charles Faudree was the master!Collagepam closing

Coffee Table Talk: Spring Edition

May 4, 2015~ Uncategorized

“On the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works,
I will meditate”
‭Psalm‬ ‭145‬:‭5‬

With the arrival of a new season, our coffee table follows suit!  Changing out the elements keeps things fresh and interesting.  I no longer feel it necessary to change all of my tabletops regularly (too many other things to do), but our coffee table is one that gets attention each season.  You can see our winter version here: Coffee Table Talk: Winter Edition.  For this particular time of year,  I added some touches of spring and changed out the books, which are always within reach for reading or perusing.  What is a coffee table without coffee table books or perhaps, a place to rest your feet? I love putting together vignettes.  Once again…shop your house, you might be surprised at what you find!  Our French antique coffee table with inlaid wood…still a favorite find! The Wedgwood pitcher holds herbs from my little garden…mint, rosemary, and chive blooms! Sweet box that contained soaps is perfect for this season with its butterflies and flowers!  Can you believe it is also a music box that plays Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake”! A great read by Beth Moore! I wish you could smell the herbs…rosemary is Butch’s favorite! Every coffee table needs a little snack – roasted pecans with sea salt on antique depression glass! Jeweled birds that are actually boxes..birds always herald spring! Vintage tole tray is ideal for grouping items! An orchid is a happy addition to our spring coffee table! Looking through to the sofa you can see a unique needlepoint pillow-Victorian ladies playing tennis!  One of the coffee table books is an all-time favorite designer, Charles Faudree.  He knew how to do country French to perfection!  His often used phrase was, “It’s not about the match, but the mix!” Faux tortoise-handle magnifying glassDo you often make changes on your tabletops, or do you find an arrangement that you like and leave it?  I am more apt to leave my arrangements now, and maybe add a new scented candle or fresh flowers!  What is on your coffee table during spring?

Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of th Happy December…it truly is the happiest time of the year! I am sharing this merry table that was inspired by @april.cornell Victorian Christmas tablecloth! As an April Cornell brand ambassador I received the beautiful tablecloth and lovely Essential blue napkins. The red and white checkered top lends itself to classic casual elegance. The lovely snowy village on the border of the cloth came to life with a couple of snowy wood slice chargers that are topped with tiny little village shops that my beloved Mother gave me many years ago. They hold a special place in my heart. The salad plates depict Christmas Village scenes and complement the cloth. An easy centerpiece of fresh fruit is nestled atop fresh greens and placed in a Natale bowl by @arteitalicacrownlinen I have joined 17 table stylists for a Christmas Tablescape Blog Hop. Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morn Happy Tuesday! I am a day late sharing Monday Morning Blooms. The theme for the July edition is Summer Living! Living in the country, our summer days are filled with outdoor chores, one of which is gardening! My ‘Little Lamb’ panicled hydrangeas are in full bloom and are the star of my simple table setting! The basket holding the hydrangeas is very sentimental. It belonged to my beloved Mother who kept her journals and devotional books in the basket. I often picked up the books and journals to read while visiting my sweet Daddy. Since my Daddy passed away in March, my brother and I are cleaning out our parents home. I just knew the basket was coming home with me! My precious Mother would have loved seeing it filled with flowers! A vintage tablecloth, @april.cornell ‘Eden’ napkins, Portmeirion ‘Botanic Garden’ dinner plates and stemware from Tuesday Morning (many years ago) complete the table!

Happy July! 2025 is half over, and where did it go Happy July! 2025 is half over, and where did it go? I am celebrating the red, white, and blue with a table set in the garden with a couple of treats and sweet iced tea for this hot summer day. Precious memories are attached to the checked tablecloth. My beloved Mother prepared Sunday lunch every week until she passed away. Each Sunday was a feast comparable to Thanksgiving. During the summer months, she often used this checked cloth. More delicious meals than I could count have been served on this cloth!

Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer Happy Wednesday! My favorite place to set a summer table is in my garden. I decided the table should be simple to allow the hydrangeas to be the star! I always love sharing a ‘special something’ on a table setting that is sentimental and has wonderful memories attached like the majolica pitcher that belonged to my beloved Mother. A beautiful blue and white tablecloth by @april.cornell for @victoriamagazine was a surprise from my sweet husband and also included the ‘blue roses’ tea set which was a part of the limited edition when it was first introduced a few years ago. The Sur La Table floral-patterned earthenware was inspired by London’s Chelsea Flower Show in collaboration with artist, April Cornell. Vintage hobnail milk glass stemware was purchased at the Longest Yard Sale. Sometimes I just enjoy a simple table!

Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our woodlands and this is the first one of the season, an Easter/Spring table! I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bodily resurrection enables all those who choose to follow Him to have assured victory over our greatest enemy…death!

I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

A fluffle of moss bunnies hopped up to the picnic table. A ‘Charming’ tablecloth with Mary Lake-Thompson napkins and Williams Sonoma enchanting ‘Famille Rose’ bunny plates!

I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition of Tea on Tuesdays. My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. As an April Cornell Brand Ambassador, I was gifted these gorgeous linens! I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.

I am serving my favorite, Earl Gray tea, from an Eileen’s Reserve teapot. Teacups by Grace Teaware and vintage Rose Chintz salad plates by Johnson Brothers add more floral patterns to the mix. Japanese Magnolia blooms were cut from my garden and placed in a lilypad teapot!
