A Lot More Than Small Talk

February 26, 2019~ Aerial Photogaphy, Everyday Living, Faith, Outdoors, Travel

“In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭4:8‬ ‭

Hello dear friends! I know a lot of times, I start off a post with a report of our ever-changing weather here in the Appalachian Foothills.  We are fortunate to be able to experience all four seasons in the South…and sometimes it seems like we can experience all four within the same week!  Just this month, we have had bone chilling temps in the teens, followed by sunny skies and a high of 78.  Last week, it was rainy and gloomy everyday, so when rain stopped and the sun decided to come out on Sunday and Monday, it was very welcomed!

But the rain we had last week wasn’t just your typical week of rain…it has brought about record setting water levels here in our county and in surrounding areas. The weather around us has been a lot more than small talk.  We are under a flood warning until Friday. The Coosa River is slightly above flood stage level as of Monday morning and is expected to finally fall below flood stage on Friday morning according to our local EMA. However, with more rain in the forecast, that could change. Weiss Lake, which is near our home, has major flooding with schools closed. The lake is a huge recreational area with summer homes lining its banks. And this is just here in our area.  I know that the weather across the nation has been difficult with record rainfall and heavy snow. My prayers and thoughts continue for all those affected.  To some, it may just be another day of rain or snow, but to others, it is life altering.

Our son was contacted by the EMA to take some drone footage last Friday. Our very popular Noccalula Falls has been roaring with all of the rains!  Be sure to check out more photos and videos on his Facebook page.

Farm land that is only a few miles away from our house!

Roadways that are near creeks!

Nearby Weiss Lake where record flooding is taking place!  Again, my prayers are with those who are affected by the weather.  Our Lord promises to be with us in the floods, both literally and spiritually.

So we have seen how devastating water can be…and I don’t know about you, but I sure need to be reminded of how beautiful and refreshing it can be as well. I dug a little into the archives and found some pretty water photos from trips that we have taken.

Butch and I visited in 2015 with our friends that have a condo on the Dutch side of the island.

Two years later in September of 2017, the island was devastated by Hurricane Irma with winds of 180 mph. Our friends were there and lived through the horrible nightmare.

They returned last year and the island is recovering, but it is a slow process!

Beautiful sunset on the island of Crete!

Thank you so much for your visits and the comments that you leave. Have you been affected by the weather this winter? I know some who live near Asheville, NC have told me of floods and landslides.

I will be back on Thursday with a tablescape.  Wishing you all a joy-filled day!

Some minor flooding in the low areas here, but not the devastation that other places have seen. We are a bit higher up. The French Broad River though, is very full and at the edge of its banks, with some water in the parks on the river’s edge. I am hoping that three days of sun will dry us out.

Good morning, Pam. Dear friend, such dreadful news about the flooding in your area. Prayers for everyone and I do pray the flooding will not reach you. Here in WV we seem to be a little protected from severe weather many areas of the country experience. The mountains protect us somewhat. However, in 1985 there was terrible flooding in our area. My husband’s childhood home along the local West Fork River was flooded. I know what destruction can occur.

Your glorious photos of Saint Maarten made my heart so happy. It is our favorite spot in the Caribbean.

Again, I do pray for everyone in your area and do hope the weather will turn itself around. Enjoy the week and I hope you will see blue skies soon!❤

Sandra, flooding can be devastating. We live on a hilltop, so we are fine. But not so for those who live on Weiss Lake. I didn’t know that you loved St. Maarten! It was devastated by the hurricane in 2017!

Your photos are both beautiful and horrifying, Pam. I’ve had flooded basements before — just five or six inches but enough to toss the lot of everything wet. I cannot compare nor can I comprehend the anguish of those who are flooded out by bad rains, mudslides, hurricane aftermaths. This post is a good reminder to us all.

I have been trying not to complain about the never ending rain, but looking at the forecast for the next 7 days it’s hard not to groan! There is a small lake I drive by often that I noticed last week was almost overflowing, not to mention the Cahaba River which is roaring…we were going to go to the coast this weekend for Mardi Gras parades but rain is in the forecast there too for the next week, ugh! BUT! At least it’s not snow, and at least it’s warm! I love seeing your son’s incredible photographs, fingers crossed you won’t have flooding…

Pam, praying you all stay safe and dry. The drone pictures of the rushing water are incredible. The water from the flooding rivers and streams here in Upstate SC will be moving towards the coast, where those poor people are still recovering from the floods of last summer’s hurricanes. We still pray at every Sunday service for some of the coastal churches that were ruined. Your photos show the beautiful majesty and sheer terror of water.

Roxanne, we are safe on our hilltop. There is much flooding and devastation along Weiss Lake. We had unexpected sunshine this afternoon and Ella Mae and I played outside. We are back to temps in the low 30’s and high 20’s next week. I don’t know how that will impact trees that are budding and blooming.

Praying for safety for everyone. There is a large lake, Kerr Lake, on the northern boarder of NC, hear where I lived in NC, I recall many times that roads were closed because of flooding. I have flown over that area during flood stage and southern Virginia and a large area of NC was under water. My sister has to put on galoshes just to go to her car and has to get drinking and cooking water from a neighbor because her water actually has mud in it due to the rain. For years her area has been under a drought. Not anymore for sure the aquifers are filled.

We’ve had glorious sunshine since Sunday & it is wonderful! Hoping you’re on higher ground & not in a low lying area with the flooding so near! Your son is quite talented & the falls are magnificent! The power of wind & water is unbelievable & scary when out of control as your son’s video demonstrates. By Thursday we’re back in the cloudy, rainy winter weather but your tablescape will brighten our day! Clara ❤️?

Oh, my! Those high waters look very scary and intimidating. We had a horrible flood here where we live last year. The river overflowed its banks, and we stood on our balcony and watched it happen. I have never heard such a loudly rushing river. Especially at night, it was so troubling to listen to it rushing as quickly on land as it was in the riverbed. God was so faithful, and even though the flooding was horrible and some of our things were ruined, praise God, we were safe. My heart goes out to the many in your area who must have been affected by this water. I am so late in coming to visit you, it is probably different there now, but I hope everyone was safe. I always keep your precious post emails in my inbox, and I wait until I can come by and have the time to enjoy them! It was so nice to visit with you today, sweet friend. I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

Happy Monday! With March bringing the promise of s Happy Monday! With March bringing the promise of spring and looking forward to our garden awakening, I planted a blooming bulb garden in my Sunshine Cottage! The butcher block countertop under a window, was a perfect place for a mini garden. Muscari, hyacinths, tulips, and daffodils danced in the sunlight and filled the cottage with an amazing fragrance!

Happy Tuesday! Welcome to the Sunshine Cottage whe Happy Tuesday! Welcome to the Sunshine Cottage where it is warm and cozy on this cold February day. It is Tea on Tuesdays and I have set a tea table with the “Blue Roses” collection that was a collaboration between @victoriamagazine and @april.cornell The exclusive porcelain pattern and matching linens have been used many times and I still enjoy their blue and white beauty. Instead of fresh flowers, porcelain ones require no arranging. Sweet treats pair perfectly with a traditional English Breakfast tea. Happy first Monday of February! After so many cold Happy first Monday of February! After so many cold days, we are experiencing a tease of spring with a 73 degree day that is forecast. After the gray and cloudy days, I needed a dose of color and decided to set a colorful citrus themed brunch! Using a bird gold and pewter stand, I mixed a citrus medley of lemons, oranges, and limes with pink and white carnations as the centerpiece. The table is highlighted with blue and white dishware. Fresh squeezed orange juice, French-pressed coffee and sweet treats of lemon poppyseed muffins, lemon cake with lemon icing, and lemon pastries are perfect for a small brunch. A faux lemon topiary belonged to my beloved Mother and seemed a perfect addition to a citrus-themed table! You are invited to join me and my Monday Morning Blooms friends, Lidy @frenchgardenhouse Sarah @sjpa48 and Mary homeiswheretheboatsis.net by clicking the LINK in my bio!

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage where I have been fluf Welcome to Sunshine Cottage where I have been fluffing for Valentine’s Day! For many years my Sweetheart and I have celebrated February 14th at home where it is quiet, no reservations are required, and we always have a table by the window!

I love the traditional colors of red and pink! Frilly carnations fill a vintage Staffordshire, ‘Charlotte’ pitcher which rests on an antique Limoges plate with a velvet gold-crowned heart. The plate stack consists of a Royal Stafford ‘Asiatic pheasant’ dinner plate, American Atelier ‘Baroque’ luncheon/salad plate, Johnson Brothers, ‘Winchester’ salad plate, and a vintage pierced Bavarian rose plate! I am a huge fan of mixing colors, patterns, and textures for a collected look.

I have joined 17 table stylists for a Valentine’s Day Blog Hop. Click the LINK in my bio to see all of the Valentine inspiration!

Happy Tuesday! On this very cold winter’s day, I Happy Tuesday! On this very cold winter’s day, I am serving my favorite tea, Earl Grey, in the Sunshine Cottage where it is warm and cozy! The magic of dancing sunlight enhances the table that is dressed with a warm tartan plaid throw repurposed as a tablecloth! ‘Winter Fauna’ bird salad plates from Pottery Barn (many years ago and now discontinued) remind me of the birds I watch from my kitchen window during the winter season. The Grace Teaware set adds more blue and white to the Spode ‘Blue Room’ dinner plates. Sweet treats were placed on a stack of Bordallo Pinheiro plates! A darling Hummel ‘Icy Adventure’ depicts a scene of an outdoor frozen pond with a pair of sweet ice skaters, a rosy cheeked boy and girl who have fallen down on the ice.
