What’s On My Coffee Table: Coffee Table Talk

January 14, 2020~ Everyday Living, Faith

“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭1:1-2‬ ‭

Happy Tuesday dear friends! I certainly hope your week is off to a good start. As I was doing a little cleaning in the family room last Thursday, which involved dusting, pardon me…but I don’t like to dust. How about you? Oops, I am sorry I digressed, as I was dusting the coffee table it dawned on me that I hadn’t shared coffee table talk in a long time. The sun was pouring in the family room, which was a bit unusual for the dreary days we have been experiencing, so I grabbed my camera. The only addition that was needed was a cup of espresso. Join me for a little girl talk around the coffee table.

I don’t normally choose a word for the new year. However, I decided on a word for this year…Delight. Used as a noun, the word “delight” means a cause or source of great pleasure, as a verb, to take great pleasure in. A scripture immediately came to mind: “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalms 37:4
Am I daily delighting in the Lord, do I take great pleasure in Him?

Each morning, I must choose to delight in the day that the Lord has made. Even in the mundane chores such as cleaning or laundry, I want to consciously choose delight. Am I choosing to delight in the small things that are easily overlooked in our day-to-day living?

The hydrangeas were still in fine form from Monday Morning Blooms. I placed them in a small ironstone pitcher to enjoy on the coffee table. I think most of us take great pleasure in a bouquet of fresh flowers gracing a table…a simple pleasure.

The coffee table is filled with books, which can bring great delight on a quiet morning. I have a large collection of coffee table books that I am sure one day will be purged. But, for now I will enjoy!

I delight in the travel that Butch and I have been afforded, so many memories to cherish. I have expressed often, I never dreamed growing up that I would ever travel outside of the South, much less step foot on five continents. So much of that travel has been in the past fifteen years, when we decided we would not wait for retirement. This small bowl was from a recent trip to Charleston. Notice the artistry of the pottery and the sweetgrass weaving, both crafted by the same artisan. I take pleasure in walking by and seeing it on the coffee table knowing the hours and skill it took to handcraft it.

Magazines left on my ottoman to peruse when there is time…

…a magnifying glass, a small leopard box…little things that can bring a smile and a memory!

A favorite book that finds its way to the coffee table for the winter season, “Winter House” by designer, Charlotte Moss.

Notice the small candle to the right of the bowl. Ella Mae personally chose this for my Christmas present. Her Mommy and Daddy took her to Dollar Tree and she used her own money, earned by doing small chores, to buy presents. I have never received a more precious gift and it’s lilac scent is delightful. Pawpaw (my Dad) received the funniest gift from EM, what every 89 year old is hoping for, a small nerf gun. He cracked up, but was also touched that she selected this special gift just for him.

The small leather box was brought back from a trip to Florence, Italy. Ella Mae has dibs on it. It is her hiding place for her little treasures. It brings great pleasure to watch her carefully open the lid and place something inside.

I confess to being a coffee snob. I love bold coffee, espresso, or cappuccino…a pleasure that I enjoy every morning!

Magazines that are delivered in my mail box rather than digitally is a simple pleasure. I am old-school, I love to open real books and turn their pages,

“The capacity for delight is the gift of paying attention.”
-Julia Margaret Cameron

I take great delight in sharing with you my friends and in you sharing with me. What brings you delight? My goal is to be conscious of what God provides in my everyday living that brings delight. But most importantly, to delight in Him. Thank you for your visits and gracious comments. Wishing you a delightful week!

Love your coffee table talk posts Pam. January is such a great month to curl up with a warm drink and enjoy some magazines or peruse the pages of a beautiful book and your living room is a feast for the eyes with your mix of patterns and fabrics. I had to chuckle over Ella Mae’s choice of gift for your dad…too cute 🙂 I’m delighting in the slower pace of January after the hustle and bustle of the holidays. ♥

Oh, what a lovely post! Now one of my favorites of yours – and there have been many! I LOVE the light streaming in through the windows. I had to pin two of your photos to my board about light streaming. Those kinds of pictures always, always make me think of my dear, sweet Mom. I don’t know why, really. I just feel such a strong memory of her when I see that, and it comforts me. That little Ella Mae! She is such a little sweetheart buying you that candle and your Daddy that nerf gun! Can you imagine one so small thinking of others like that? You can sure tell that she is being raised right and under the right influence! I just love seeing photos of your beautiful home and belongings – you have such an amazing gift of making things look so elegant and homey at the same time. God bless you abundantly, sweet friend. So wonderful to visit with you today!

Sweet delights – books, magazines, a good cup of coffee (and accompanying dessert, of course!). That is how I like to spend my January, Pam. Your cherished items – the bowl from SC, gifts from EM (precious!) and others – are just some of the small reminders of the many blessings in your rich life. I feel very blessed too, and love to take pleasure in the little things like you do. Thanks for sharing. And yes, I am of the club who dislikes dusting too!

Delight is a great word of the year, and such a good way to keep a positive attitude! I take much delight in your leopard prints, beautiful book stacks, scattered glossy magazines, and Ella Mae’s wooden treasure box…such a sweet story about her buying Christmas gifts…the nerf gun cracks me up! I am taking delight in the fact that I got my errands done yesterday and can stay home and cozy on this rainy day…hmmm, I think I’ll have a peppermint latte! Thank you Pam, for starting my day in such a happy way!

I am old school also because, as you do, I love turning the pages of books or magazines. I confess it is difficult to throw away magazines and I have tried to cut down on subscribing. I also find it hard to find time to stay up on blogs and read books and magazines too!
How sweet and smart Ella Mae is being taught to save her own money and select gifts for the special ones in her life. We still have a popsicle stick pencil holder our son made on our office desk.
How wonderful it is to relax and just enjoy a cup of coffee and books and magazines.
Delight is a great word. One of the joys of my day is to rise very early, walk outside with my coffee, and delight in the grandeur of the night time sky God has made and delight in HIM. Then to feast on HIs words begin my day.

I love the word you have chosen for this year “delight”. The small things in life can bring much delight indeed. Sweet Ella Mae’s thoughtfulness that she put into selecting her gifts is so adorable! I love the Nerf gun – a very good gift for a guy no matter what age! I’m sure the candle will be enjoyed & cherished. She’s such a blessing! Pam, words can’t express how much I enjoy your posts! They are delightful and I truly appreciate all your & Butch’s efforts! Have a wonderful day sweet friend! Clara ❤️

Thank you Linda. I give magazines away to ladies who don’t have the extra money to spend on them. They seem to really appreciate getting them. If there is a photo or article that I particularly want to save, I just tear it out and save them in folders. I saved magazines for years and finally realized I had to purge. I only save Christmas magazines now and refer back to them from year to year! Hope that helps.

We also have treasures from our travels. If I gave you a tour of my house there would be stories behind so many pieces.

Pam, thank you for the word “delight” which is a great companion to my word “joy”. Delight is an action verb and it takes effort sometimes to delight in the mundane. I don’t like dusting either. I sure delighted in this amazing post. Started my day and year perfectly as I too am going to incorporate delight into my days this year. The gifts from Ella Mae are delightful using her own money. I received a gift from Maddie on Saturday. She has been talking about it, anxious for me to have it. She chose it herself in a shop at Edisto. A beautiful seashell cross. Instead of smiling like a normal human being, I cried crocodile tears as she told me she knew how much I would love it. I am so glad she knows what I love. Everything about your room delights me. I love books, magazines and a good cup of coffee. Love you my friend. What a great long distance friend you are!

All of these captures from your coffee talk should be in a magazine or a hard cover written and illustrated by you!

January is a time for cuddling, being cozy and taking in the “delights” around us! And there’s nothing better then a rich cup of something warm to round it all out!

And I have to say how proud I am of Emma and her parents for introducing her to …giving and gifting to others! Her choices were such a “delight!” But the nerf gun… priceless!

Happy Tuesday dear friend! It’s another busy week here.

Today’s visit is certainly delightful, not only for it’s sensitive and uplifting spiritual message, but the beauty and warmth that you have created in your family room..easy to see how one could find great comfort and release there. FddlDD about the dust…when delightful discoveries are to made in those tempting books….tomorrow is another day…. Bless you for

I am serving a simple teatime with Earl Grey tea, savory egg salad filled phyllo cups, and sweet vanilla cupcakes with cream cheese icing, and macarons! A favorite cottage rose tablecloth and Essential napkins are by April Cornell.

We are most blessed to celebrate the resurrection of Christ, being the source of new life, yet new life that is eternal. The beauty of this spring will again give way to another autumn in a few months, but the significance of His empty tomb will never change! Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our woodlands and this is the first one of the season, an Easter/Spring table! I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bodily resurrection enables all those who choose to follow Him to have assured victory over our greatest enemy…death!

I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

A fluffle of moss bunnies hopped up to the picnic table. A ‘Charming’ tablecloth with Mary Lake-Thompson napkins and Williams Sonoma enchanting ‘Famille Rose’ bunny plates!

I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition of Tea on Tuesdays. My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. As an April Cornell Brand Ambassador, I was gifted these gorgeous linens! I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.

I am serving my favorite, Earl Gray tea, from an Eileen’s Reserve teapot. Teacups by Grace Teaware and vintage Rose Chintz salad plates by Johnson Brothers add more floral patterns to the mix. Japanese Magnolia blooms were cut from my garden and placed in a lilypad teapot!

Happy Monday! With March bringing the promise of s Happy Monday! With March bringing the promise of spring and looking forward to our garden awakening, I planted a blooming bulb garden in my Sunshine Cottage! The butcher block countertop under a window, was a perfect place for a mini garden. Muscari, hyacinths, tulips, and daffodils danced in the sunlight and filled the cottage with an amazing fragrance!

Happy Tuesday! Welcome to the Sunshine Cottage whe Happy Tuesday! Welcome to the Sunshine Cottage where it is warm and cozy on this cold February day. It is Tea on Tuesdays and I have set a tea table with the “Blue Roses” collection that was a collaboration between @victoriamagazine and @april.cornell The exclusive porcelain pattern and matching linens have been used many times and I still enjoy their blue and white beauty. Instead of fresh flowers, porcelain ones require no arranging. Sweet treats pair perfectly with a traditional English Breakfast tea. Happy first Monday of February! After so many cold Happy first Monday of February! After so many cold days, we are experiencing a tease of spring with a 73 degree day that is forecast. After the gray and cloudy days, I needed a dose of color and decided to set a colorful citrus themed brunch! Using a bird gold and pewter stand, I mixed a citrus medley of lemons, oranges, and limes with pink and white carnations as the centerpiece. The table is highlighted with blue and white dishware. Fresh squeezed orange juice, French-pressed coffee and sweet treats of lemon poppyseed muffins, lemon cake with lemon icing, and lemon pastries are perfect for a small brunch. A faux lemon topiary belonged to my beloved Mother and seemed a perfect addition to a citrus-themed table! You are invited to join me and my Monday Morning Blooms friends, Lidy @frenchgardenhouse Sarah @sjpa48 and Mary homeiswheretheboatsis.net by clicking the LINK in my bio!

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage where I have been fluf Welcome to Sunshine Cottage where I have been fluffing for Valentine’s Day! For many years my Sweetheart and I have celebrated February 14th at home where it is quiet, no reservations are required, and we always have a table by the window!

I love the traditional colors of red and pink! Frilly carnations fill a vintage Staffordshire, ‘Charlotte’ pitcher which rests on an antique Limoges plate with a velvet gold-crowned heart. The plate stack consists of a Royal Stafford ‘Asiatic pheasant’ dinner plate, American Atelier ‘Baroque’ luncheon/salad plate, Johnson Brothers, ‘Winchester’ salad plate, and a vintage pierced Bavarian rose plate! I am a huge fan of mixing colors, patterns, and textures for a collected look.

Happy Tuesday! On this very cold winter’s day, I Happy Tuesday! On this very cold winter’s day, I am serving my favorite tea, Earl Grey, in the Sunshine Cottage where it is warm and cozy! The magic of dancing sunlight enhances the table that is dressed with a warm tartan plaid throw repurposed as a tablecloth! ‘Winter Fauna’ bird salad plates from Pottery Barn (many years ago and now discontinued) remind me of the birds I watch from my kitchen window during the winter season. The Grace Teaware set adds more blue and white to the Spode ‘Blue Room’ dinner plates. Sweet treats were placed on a stack of Bordallo Pinheiro plates! A darling Hummel ‘Icy Adventure’ depicts a scene of an outdoor frozen pond with a pair of sweet ice skaters, a rosy cheeked boy and girl who have fallen down on the ice.
