Celebrating Spring’s Arrival & Easter’s Blessings

March 19, 2024~ Appalachian Foothills, Blog hop, Easter, Faith, Spring

Hello friends, it is the first day of spring and I am celebrating its arrival in our Appalachian Foothills! I am choosing to celebrate even though our day started out in the upper 20’s! Not only am I celebrating spring’s arrival but also Easter’s blessings.

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
John‬ ‭11‬:‭25‬-26 ‭(ESV‬‬)

I am excited to join seventeen talented table stylists for a Spring Tablescape Blog Hop hosted by my friend, Rita at Panoply. You will find all the links for creative tabletops at the bottom of this post.

“There is an unexplainable stirring that occurs when winter finally exhibits the humility to completely bow out and relinquish all rights to spring!”
~Butch Richardson

The spring season makes an appearance in the middle of February when our daffodils in the cottage garden begin to bloom. The daffs are now spent, but trees are budding and leafing and spring is happening all over our Appalachian hills and woodlands! Not only do we love the passing of winter, but all three of our grandchildren have spring birthdays…March, April, and May. My wonderful Renaissance Man turns a year older in April. With all of these precious blessings, our greatest blessing is Easter!

Bunnies, baskets, and brightly colored eggs bring excitement to children, and it is a lovely blessing to observe their laughter as they search for that special prize egg. Easter is a time for family, friends, food, and a springing forth of new life all around us. Easter blessings surround the celebration of the resurrection of Christ, new life that is eternal! The beauty of spring will again give way to another autumn in a few months, but the significance of His empty tomb will never change!

While awaiting the garden to come to life, my favorite spot to set a table is next to our woodlands. A picnic table is enhanced by views toward the mountain, woods, and the Sunshine Cottage! RM’s winter rye grass appears as a green carpet that has been spread to announce spring’s arrival!

Fanciful and festive ‘Famille Rose’ salad plates by Williams Sonoma are a new addition to my dishware. They were inspired by traditional Chinese porcelain and hand decorated with flora and fauna in an eye-catching color palette. Each year my sweet Daddy gives me money for Christmas and I make sure to purchase something for myself that I might not have normally purchased. Two years ago I bought the dinner plates (seen in photo) and last year the ‘Famille Rose’ bunny plates that I will share next week for Tea on Tuesdays. I had admired this pattern for several years and had decided not to add more dishes that I did not need. But then I had this thought, “ It would be a perfect pattern to leave to one of my granddaughters, and she would know it was gifts from her Pawpaw to PJ!”

A majolica pitcher complements the tulips! Did you know that tulips continue to grow in the vase, up to six inches?

We enjoy a nice view of our Appalachian Foothills as we live almost at the end of the chain. The Appalachians extend nearly 2000 miles from the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador to Central Alabama. The cobalt blue sky, on this particular day, added its own beauty to the setting!

Mary Lake-Thompson napkins depicting tulips in a blue and white pitcher are appearing for the first time on a table. I found them last year at a favorite local gift shop, but decided to wait and use them for a spring table when tulips are in season here.

Vintage Anchor Hocking White Hobnail Milk Glass goblets in mint condition were spotted at The World’s Longest Yard sale several years ago by a friend. She sent me a photo to see if I wanted them and I replied yes, of course.

Bordallo Pinheiro dessert plates were placed on top of the ‘Famille Rose’ plates for a different look! Egg cups were filled with delicious candy-coated, dark chocolate covered almonds that resemble tiny eggs! A mix of gold and silver/gold flatware enhance the gold rim of ‘Famille Rose’ plates.

The April Cornell table square ‘Blue Roses’ along with a matching tea set and embroidered organza napkins were gifts from my sweet RM a few years ago. The ‘Blue Roses’ collection was a collaboration between Victoria Magazine and April Cornell! You might notice a large vase at the end of the table with redbud clippings. Redbuds are one of the first flowering trees to bloom in our area.

The picnic table was handmade from reclaimed wood, but our pesky squirrels have decided it is a tasty treat to chew. They also enjoy fine dining of acorns and pine cones and have the nerve to leave without cleaning up!

Darling bunnies hopped up to check out the tulips, fortunately not the kind that eat flowers! The floral bunny was a gift from a dear friend’s young granddaughter who was moving to Sweden! Years have passed and she is now married.

“I’ve seen spring come to the orchard every year as far back as I can remember and I’ve never grown tired of it. Oh, the wonder of it! The outrageous beauty! God didn’t have to give us cherry blossoms you know. He didn’t have to make apple trees and peach trees burst into flower and fragrance. But God loves to splurge. He gives us all this magnificence and then, if that isn’t enough, he provides fruit from such extravagance.”
~Lynn Austin

I love the way tulips have a mind of their own! You can spend time arranging or just let them decide, because in the end they are in charge!

Springtime creates dancing sunlight, shadows, and reflections that are unique and not found at any other time of the year. The angle of light near the time of the vernal equinox, along with a forrest canopy that is not yet able to block the sun, brings a special gift to the outdoors!

Good Morning Pam, Your table set by the woodlands with the spring green carpet of rye grass is a wonderful sight to behold on a cold morning! Your ‘Famille Rose’ plates, spring tulips and sweet bunnies make for a beautiful table. I love your adorable little bunny egg cups too! I’m a big fan of Mary Lake Thompson and love your new tulip napkins. I always wish I had a redbud tree I could snip blooms from this time of year, such a simple and gorgeous tribute to spring. We have freeze warnings this morning after last week’s 80 degree temperatures so I’m keeping my finger crossed that the new bud and leaves don’t get frostbite! As always it’s a treat to join you at the table. Happy Spring! 🐰 🐇🐣 🐤 🌷💐💜

Thanks so much, Mary. I love the blog hops. We had a light frost yesterday morning that took out all of my blooms on our Japanese Magnolia and possibly the bridal wreath spirea. We had a very light frost this morning. It seems to happen every year. I feel for our peach farmers. The peach trees were all in bloom. Have a good rest of the week 🐥🌷💚💐🐰

Oh Pam, what a lovely setting for your table. (altho it looks like you have a bit of a hike further from your home but the view is definitely worth it near your woodlands) I love the Famille Rose’ salad plates by Williams Sonoma and yes, handing them down to grands is a perfect remembrance of their PJ and PawPaw. And yes, yes, yes, the majolica pitcher complements the tulips beautifully, along with the napkins and April Cornell tablecloth. I did not know that tulips continue to grow in the vase. How interesting.

Thank you for the Lynne Austin quote. How true! And of course it goes with out saying the quote from Butch is right on.

Happy Easter and Praise God….He is Risen!
    Luv ya my dear friend.

    Good Morning Pam!
Your table set by the woodlands is exquisite. Tulips grace the middle, but your lovely dishes are also a centerpiece.
I see small trinket boxes on your table. I love small trinket boxes. And yours are so sweet.
The tulips on your napkins almost match your centerpiece. How delightful.
What a treat it was to sit with you outside by your woodlands. Thank you, and yes please for the yummy candy!

Too much to comment on But I must say the green carpet, blue sky, all compliment your table setting. Isn’t God awesome? And you must have Butch build another building. This time a storage building for your table settings. The granddaughter that gets too chose her favorite pattern will have a job on her hands. I love it all.

Oh, Pam, I am totally immersed in all good feelings of spring with your tablescape! From the green grass (has Butch had to mow yet? We have.), to the blue skies, and all those gorgeous elements you’ve assembled on that table – all such beautiful signs of spring. Your choosing the Famille Rose salad plates and the logic behind were sound thinking, the only problem will be which granddaughter??? The Mary Lake Thompson napkins are also perfect with this table. I love those milk glass goblets, and the floral arrangements, both the free-spirited tulips and the redbud stems. The sentiment quotes from both Butch and Lynn Austin resonate with me, as spring is definitely my favorite season of all. And West Virginia, like Alabama, is nestled around the Appalachians. In fact, we are the only state where the Appalachians span throughout the entirety of our broders, north to south.

I’m so happy you’re a part of the stylists who love setting a beautiful table, and I always look forward to especially your first spring tables set outdoors, where nature’s beauty abounds. I’d love to join you there for a meal or tea. Happy spring!

Rita, thank you so much. He has been mowing for a few weeks. As far as which granddaughter, when Emma gets a couple of years older, I am going to put all of my patterns out for them to see and let them choose. Our daughter-in-love has asked for two patterns, the Quimper that you gifted me, and the Bethlehem Christmas that Pat Haney from Life at Lydia’s House gave to me! Have a lovely rest of the week and thanks again for all you do to make the hops successful!

Good morning Pam and Happy Spring! Do you keep a book with Butch’s quotes to pass down to the grandchildren? Everything about your table is perfection, but I am particularly enthralled with the beautiful napkins and your Anchor Hocking goblets. I love that everything has a meaningful story. My new church (I moved this summer bc I wanted a traditional Anglican service and music, a very painful decision to leave) is having Lenten choral EvenSong service with 40 members from the Anderson University choral group and orchestra. I am very excited to hear it!

    Pam,
My heart is so full! I can’t wait to “hop” around like these beautiful bunnies–and I must “pin” these! In the past, Fall has always been my favorite time. As I grow older, Spring is becoming just as much a favorite. The new plates, purchased via your Papa, are gorgeous (undoubtedly, a family keepsake your granddaughter will treasure). Happy early birthday to all the Spring loves in your life! Everything is blooming so beautifully. The place settings are so gorgeously created with the touch of tulips (they’re in charge, lol!) and the new napkins, the bunnies, and added sweetness, the gorgeous landscape of the Appalachian foothills…it’s like Narnia to me, Pam. Butch’s quote touched my heart! Amen! Happy Spring to all of you! Thank you for sharing hope, beauty, and the promise of our Risen Savior! I love you!

The redbud is one of my favorite trees, and it is also our state tree. They grow wild all over. Their purple color dotted along the countryside tells you spring has arrived. Your Williams Sonoma plates are so gorgeous on your table. I keep saying that I am going to collect this pattern. I think it is wonderful that you are adding to yours for one of your granddaughters. Pam, my Tuesday welcomed an unexpected house guest and delayed my visits to the links in our hop. I’ve been so eager to see everyones’ tables, and yours is pure delight. Like you, redbuds are first blooms here, and most have already leafed out. My cut branches that I brought inside even began to leaf. The other flowering trees are either in full bloom or also leafed out. Spring has definitely sprung forth in Central Texas.
Your ruffled edge tulips are one of my favorite varieties which I reach for whenever I see them available. As for the beautiful Familie Rose dishes from Williams-Sonoma, I, too went down that rabbit hole with some of the salad plates. Wish I had bought one more of each with the butterfly pattern because now they only offer it as an appetizer plate. I saw that they added more serving pieces this year. Did you add any of those?
Always a treat to see your posts, Pam. I know you will enjoy beautiful family celebrations with the upcoming birthdays. Happy Spring! Happy Easter!

Pam, I like how the florals in your plates and linens bring the surrounding countryside to the table, with pretty spring hues and delicate designs. Of course I love the bunnies (though not the ones currently nesting somewhere under the front garden abelias), though the gorgeous tulips steal the show. Enjoy a beautiful Easter!

Oh my Pam! Your view and your table is stunning! I especially love those gorgeous Famille Rose salad plates. The pitcher of fresh tulips make quite a statement. I love how they continue to grow and find they become quite abstract when the start towards the light! Your tablecloth is so pretty. I love a classic blue on white combination. Sadly nothing is blooming here were I live in Canada yet. In fact we just had a few inches of snow on Friday, but thankfully spring snow doesn’t last long! Wishing you a very Happy Easter and wonderful spring 🙂

Happy Wednesday! I set a table next to our woodlan Happy Wednesday! I set a table next to our woodlands in memory of my beautiful Mother who was a lovely example of a Proverbs 31 woman. Mother had the gift of hospitality and shared it with everyone. Karl Rosenfield peonies from my garden fill a treasured keepsake pitcher handed down from my grandmother! A beautiful floral April Cornell ‘Lillianna’ tablecloth and Famille Rose salad plates elevate the status of the old picnic table next to our woodlands. I have collected bejeweled enamel trinket boxes for many years and shared a few on the table for whimsy and fun. For memories of my Mother, click the link in my profile.

With glorious weather, the table next to our woodl With glorious weather, the table next to our woodlands was perfect for teatime! It is Tea on Tuesdays with blogging friends Mary and Kitty. The table is enhanced by views toward the mountain, woodlands, and the large Snowball Viburnum. The verdant rye grass appears as a green carpet that has been spread for Easter! Vintage Fitz and Floyd ‘Herb Garden’ teapots, sugar and creamer, and oval tray are suited for springtime with their embossed bows, vegetables, and words. A bouquet of Kwanzan Cherry blossoms add more spring color to the setting.

I am serving a simple teatime with Earl Grey tea, savory egg salad filled phyllo cups, and sweet vanilla cupcakes with cream cheese icing, and macarons! A favorite cottage rose tablecloth and Essential napkins are by April Cornell.

We are most blessed to celebrate the resurrection of Christ, being the source of new life, yet new life that is eternal. Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our woodlands and this is the first one of the season, an Easter/Spring table! I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bodily resurrection enables all those who choose to follow Him to have assured victory over our greatest enemy…death!

I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

A fluffle of moss bunnies hopped up to the picnic table. A ‘Charming’ tablecloth with Mary Lake-Thompson napkins and Williams Sonoma enchanting ‘Famille Rose’ bunny plates!

I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition of Tea on Tuesdays. My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. As an April Cornell Brand Ambassador, I was gifted these gorgeous linens! I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.

I am serving my favorite, Earl Gray tea, from an Eileen’s Reserve teapot. Teacups by Grace Teaware and vintage Rose Chintz salad plates by Johnson Brothers add more floral patterns to the mix. Japanese Magnolia blooms were cut from my garden and placed in a lilypad teapot!

Happy first Monday of February! After so many cold Happy first Monday of February! After so many cold days, we are experiencing a tease of spring with a 73 degree day that is forecast. After the gray and cloudy days, I needed a dose of color and decided to set a colorful citrus themed brunch! Using a bird gold and pewter stand, I mixed a citrus medley of lemons, oranges, and limes with pink and white carnations as the centerpiece. The table is highlighted with blue and white dishware. Fresh squeezed orange juice, French-pressed coffee and sweet treats of lemon poppyseed muffins, lemon cake with lemon icing, and lemon pastries are perfect for a small brunch. A faux lemon topiary belonged to my beloved Mother and seemed a perfect addition to a citrus-themed table!
