Happy Monday and welcome sweet friends! This coming Sunday, May 10, is Mother’s Day which is always a special day for our family!
“Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”
Proverbs 31:30 (ESV)
Our picnic table next to the woodlands is often used in springtime for tablesettings while we wait for the garden to fill in and bloom. I have used this area for many Mother’s Day tablescapes. We recently purchased a new picnic table because those pesky squirrels have been chewing on our older one and would often spread out their meal and never bother to clean up the mess! It was moved a half mile through the woods to find its new home by the river. In case you missed our first picnic, you can see it here.
Mary and I welcome you to the May edition of Monday Morning Blooms. Our friend Lidy is unable to join us, but will return next month. You will find Mary’s link for flower therapy near the end of this post!
The table was set in memory of my beautiful and beloved Mother. She was a Godly mother and a wonderful example of the Proverbs 31 woman. Oh, how she would have loved the peonies! Long-time readers will probably remember the many blog posts that I have shared about her legendary gift of hospitality. This table is also in honor of my beautiful daughter-in-love! She is a loving wife to our son and a fabulous mother to our four precious grandchildren ages 10, 7, 5, and 15 months. She amazes me as she juggles homeschooling, all of the children’s activities, and keeping their home with love and grace!
“She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.”
Proverbs 31:27 (ESV)
The Karl Rosenfield peonies have bloomed prolifically this year. As I was thinking about a container that would be large enough to fill with an abundance of blooms, I had to look no farther than my kitchen island. The very large and heavy Italian pasta urn provided the inspiration for the blue and white setting. The topper that I used is probably the most unusual one ever. While cleaning out my closet recently, I discovered a blue and white caftan blouse that had been long forgotten. As I was about to place it in the donate box I suddenly had a crazy idea. It was a perfect rectangle that could serve as a table topper!! Tip: Shop your clothes for tablescapes! Under the topper is a Pottery Barn bee tablecloth. The rich color of the peonies definitely stand out against the blue and white background!
The bee cloth is round and I normally wouldn’t use a round cloth on a rectangular table, but I found it interesting with its floral border.
The Churchill ‘blue Willow’ dinner plates belonged to my Mother. The Noritake cobalt blue ‘Sweet Swirl’ iced tea glasses are discontinued, vintage pressed glass that features a distinctive spiral pattern. I read that they are highly collectible, info that I did not know!
After my Daddy passed away in March of 2025, my brother and I began the process of sifting through all our beloved parents had left behind. The discoveries we uncovered flooded our hearts with memories. I found this beautiful Mother’s Day card that I had given Mother along with many gifts, cards, and handwritten notes! So many pictures that I had never seen, but one stood out among the others…a photo of my Daddy and Mother while she was pregnant with me. I can’t begin to explain the emotion of seeing my young parents with Daddy’s arm around Mother and the happiness on their faces.
A few days after I had photographed my table, the Sarah Bernhardt peonies began to bloom and each day are providing more gorgeous pink blooms!
Last Wednesday April 29th was the nineteenth anniversary of Mother’s home-going and also Wyatt’s 5th birthday. Nineteen years later, I still miss her terribly, but she left me a lasting example of how to live life well. From a very young age, I remember every Sunday lunch included our family, friends, and those who needed to feel loved…a single mom and her children with financial needs, a widow that was all alone, or someone who was going through difficult times. My parents’ home was small by today’s standards, but that never prevented her from sharing her gift of hospitality. She always said, “If there is room in the heart, there is room at the table.”
“She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy.”
Proverbs 31:20 (ESV)
My love of setting a pretty table was inspired by my Mother. She never used a paper plate, napkin, or a Solo cup. She prepared the most delicious Southern food I have ever eaten. Mother was famous for her cakes, pies, cobblers, and cookies. Mother’s three grandchildren still talk about her food and enjoying every meal at her table. Mother’s Red Velvet cake once sold at a charity auction for $1,000 dollars. Her hands were always busy. She made beautiful quilts, ceramics, porcelain dolls, and many hand-crafted items that she gave away. People far and wide were the recipients of her lovely handiwork.
A smaller arrangement of fragrant Festiva Maxima peonies with privet from the yard’s edge.
I never remember hearing my Mother complain. She was beautiful inside and out. She would get up very early, make her coffee, and “fix her face” as she described putting on her makeup. She was then ready for her prayer time, Bible reading, and preparing breakfast! Unexpected guests would often show up at the door. That was never a problem because she always had a dessert, or perhaps two or three ready to share. She loved people and people loved her!
It has been a joy for me to share stories of my Mother to Ella Mae, Emma, and Wyatt. I will share those stories when Daniel is old enough. They speak of Nanny as if they knew her. It is very important that we pass down the stories from generation to generation! EM, EK, and WL spent so much time with my Daddy, known as Pawpaw, that they will have their own precious memories to share with their children one day!
The way that Mother and Daddy lived their life impacted so many people and generations. It is a reminder that the way we live our life matters…every single day that we are given will echo into eternity!
“Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children’s children—”
Deuteronomy 4:9 (ESV)
After thirteen years of marriage, God gave us a son, and I became a mother! Being a mother is one of life’s greatest blessings. I thought nothing else could come close, but now I am grandmother of four…two girls and two boys! Blessing upon blessing. All gifts from our Heavenly Father!
“Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.”
Proverbs 31:28-29 ESV

Mary ~ Home Is Where the Boat Is
I know many of your mothers have passed away, I understand that loss that no one can fill. Many of you don’t have children of your own, but you have made a positive impact on precious children that have been a part of your life. And perhaps there has been a woman other than your mother who has blessed and encouraged you. Let us take the time to recognize and celebrate these ladies!
Wishing you a joy-filled week and a lovely Mother’s Day!

Your Mother’s Day table is absolutely beautiful…those peonies truly steal the show! They’re such a perfect choice for May, and I love how you’ve let them shine as the star of your arrangement. There’s something so special about peonies this time of year…their fleeting blooms make them feel even more meaningful and celebratory.
I also have to mention your creative use of the blue and white caftan blouse as a table topper—what a brilliant idea! The blue and white layers and patterns, along with your pasta urn pairs so beautifully with your blooms. It’s the kind of thoughtful detail that makes your tables always feel so unique and personal.
Your tribute to motherhood is so heartfelt, along with the sweet memories of your mother. It’s a always joy to share blooms with you and have a virtual seat at your table. Happy early Mother’s Day, sweet friend! 💗
Mary, as always, thank you for your sweet and thoughtful comments! It is a gorgeous spring day with 70 degree temperature!
My mother used to “fix her face” too! It continues to make me chuckle. Every word, verse, setting and photo is beautiful as always. Happy Mother’s Day and happy, sweet memories.
Ruthie, I guess “fixing our face” is still a good thing! Thank you for your sweet comments!
Good Monday Morning to you, Pam! Your treasured memories of your beloved mother always makes me wish I could’ve met her. What a lovely, giving woman she was. Your verse from Deuteronomy was such a perfect one in passing along memories of loved ones. Now for your stunning table….the color of those peonies in the gorgeous pasta vase against the blue table ( love the topper!) is so striking! Using your mom’s dishes and sharing the card and memories at your picnic table was a beautiful way to start my day 💐
Thank you for your lovely comments! Happy Monday, Kitty 🌺
So beautiful and lovely. I love hearing stories of your beloved mother and amazing daughter in law, and you, sweet Pam. There seems to be a heritage of wonderful mothers (and fathers too) that runs deep in your family. Wishing you a Happy Mother’s Day as you celebrate around a beautiful table with stunning flowers…
Sue, thank you for your heartwarming comments! Happy Mother’s Day🌺
Today would be my mom’s 108th birthday. How I wish I could sit her down at a table as lovely as this one! I, too, still have Mother’s Day cards sent to my mom and grandma, too. I’m so glad I come from a family of “savers.” This is absolutely lovely, Pam, and I love every single touch.
Jeanie, wow 108th birthday. I always love reading about your mom. She was a special lady!
Beautiful Mother’s Day tribute, and gorgeous tablescape and arrangements, Pam. My mother’s homegoing was three months to the date prior to your Mother’s , in the same year. You are so right, we never, ever stop missing our mother. I love your peonies, and the bouquets just kept getting prettier and prettier which each arrangement shared! Love your tip for setting a tablescape – shop your closet, lol. I have done that with a wrap around skirt, no less. I love using rounds on rectangles, and coming up with new ways to please the eye and welcome guests. Your mother would be proud. Happy Monday Morning Bloom day!
Rita, I did not realize your mother passed away the same year as mine. I love that you have used a wrap around skirt on a table. It is always thinking outside of the box!
Good Morning Pam. Your table is beautiful. I love peonies they’re so pretty in the spring. You are so right. Just when you do not think you could love anyone more than your own child they give you a grandchild and your heart explodes again. Grandchildren are such a beautiful blessing. Have a great week and Happy Mother’s Day. Hugs. Kris
Thank you Kris for your sweet comments! Children and grandchildren are the best!
What a beautiful post to greet my morning! The peonies are spectacular. How I wish we could grow them here. I depend on Trader Joe’s for my bouquets. I need to see if they have peonies in stock yet.
Your blue and white theme is perfection. I so enjoyed reading about your mom, Pam. Especially the red velvet cake story! I’m of an age that I remember all the hype of red velvet cake during my childhood. It became iconic! I also smiled thinking about your mom’s Blue Willow dishes. I’ve likely told you this story before. My mom wanted a set of Blue Willow when she and my dad married. They could not afford such dishes. They married in August and for Christmas my dad gifted my mother a child’s set of Blue Willow. I still have what remains of the set after my sister and I played with them for years. What’s left now reside with me, and I treat these little dishes with great care.
Thank you for you dear and heartfelt words about motherhood. You are a treasure to your family and each of us who follow along here. Happy Mother’s Day, Pam!
Sarah, thank you for heartwarming comments! I don’t remember that sweet story of the child’s set of dishes that your dad gave your mom for Christmas. How very special that you have the remaining Blue Willow pieces of the set that I know you cherish! Sarah, you are a treasure my friend!
Pam, once again, you have set a lovely table. The peonies look fabulous in the blue and white pasta vase. Love the striking blue goblets. Such a smart idea to use your blouse as a topper. Your mother sounds like a wonderful woman with many talents. I can see the tradition carrying on.
Thank you Linda for your sweet comments. My mother was very talented and had the gift of hospitality!
Pam….Your sweet post brought tears to my eyes as I remembered my dear mother. She went to be with the Lord August 21st, 2001….and there is not a day go by that I don’t think of her and my dear grandmother. Your precious mother’s gift (as my mother’s gift) were scripture based…and you dear one….are carrying on the legacy of our Lord’s teaching. Honoring your DIL is but a small part.
1 Peter 4:9–10: “Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others…”
Romans 12:13: “Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.”
Hebrews 13:2: “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.”
Your new picnic table is set beautifully. You know Peonies are a favorite Spring flower of mine and your vases show them at their best. So clever to use your closet…I have used my ‘blanket’ cedar chest too. 🥰 There was a time before my late husband went ‘Home’ (a year before my mother) I used my Blue Willow dishes as everyday dishes, now they are only brought out for special events. Yours are perfect for your lovely blue and white table, honoring your mother and DIL.
I am sure our mothers were rewarded with “Well done, good and faithful servant” Matthew 25:21.
Hugs and Blessings always.
Kari, no matter how long they have been gone, we still miss them every single day! You really had some difficult years with your husband’s and mother’s passing so close together. You are a wonderful example of God’s grace, my friend. You have survived hardships with your strong faith and perseverance! Love you my sister❤️🙏🏻
Each remembrance of your Mother makes me smile. I enjoy hearing your stories of her. I love how you will honor her and your daughter in love with this beautiful table.
The table “topper” is darling! How creative you are. The blue swirl glassware, along with your Mother’s dishes, really showcase your pink peonies in the blue-and-white pasta cannister. How sweet to have a card from you to your Mother on the table. It’s all so pretty.
💙🤍
Happy Mother’s Day to you, dear friend!
Thank you Nancy! Your comments warm my heart sweet friend 💙🤍💙
Peonies, my favorite flower, has a full post today and as usual they are beautiful and you are blessed to have many blooms this year. As I type this a cold front is moving through and we are expecting snow tomorrow night to the tune of 3 to 9 inches. I positively would prefer being at your table but alas I must stay here and cover the peonies and other plants as best I can. The blue and white table is a favorite and the flower container is perfect!
Thank you Alice for your sweet comments. That sounds like a lot of snow for May. Yes cover your peonies and plants. Take care my friend!
Oh, Pam, this is beyond precious. I’m typing this in tears. It touched my heart so deeply. Yes, the blooms, settings, the blouse (what a fantastic idea!), the vintage rare glassware, were all beautiful–but it was your words, Pam.
You added the beauty in the blooms by sharing the grace, hospitality, and memories of your Mom (and Dad!). Red Velvet is my absolute favorite! From what I’ve learned of your Mom, it was well worth it. What an amazing woman of God—she served God and others well.
It’s no wonder you are the way that YOU are! She passed the legacy to you. And now, you can celebrate with your daughter-in-law and adorable grandchildren.
We are all blessed to know you! You make Mother’s Day (and every day) very special, Pam. You are truly a one-of-a-kind.
Happy Mother’s Day precious Pam. I love you dearly! 🥰🙏🏻❣️💐🌺🌻🌼🪷🎶🎶
Karla, your sweet comments warm my heart. My Mother shared her love with everyone she came in contact with. I can only aspire to be like her example, but I fall way short. She never thought of herself, only others.
Happy Mother’s Day my friend. I read your beautiful post, God’s grace sustains you my beautiful friend 🙏🏻❤️🥰
You’re welcome, sweet Pam. I want to be just like your Mom too. I pray that God takes the “me” outta me!
I love and appreciate you more than you know.
May God continue to stustain us all.
I’ll be moving this weekend, dear friend. God opened the door to this 55+ place. Two doctors on one side, a single lady next to me. They take care of lawn, snow, trash, and internet.
One day I’ll run around trails and mountains, have a cabin by the river (I told God I don’t need a mansion–a cabin will do!). But for now, this is His will. It happened fast–just like He does when I step out of his Way.
My former pastor is sending a “crew”. It’s all meant to be. Once I’m settled, I can concentrate on the things that matter. I found out the best of news. Last night I spoke to my oldest son for an hour and 1/2. He is flying home from Japan, hopefully, by the weekend. He will surprise the kids! Praise God! The best Mother’s Day gift I could receive! Other than all of them with me. But that’s wonderful!
I love you and pray for you daily. I’ll stay in touch and let you know when I’m settled. 🙏🏻❣️🥰🩷💐💐💐
Oh Pam, there are so many things I love about this post in addition to the absolutely gorgeous peonies. “Fix her face” was my very favorite because my mother used to say it too. I loved watching her at her dressing table get all beautified for church or an evening out. And I also love how you constantly acknowledge Allison and the amazing job she does with the children and her home…truly anther Proverbs 31 woman. You are blessed with a wonderful daughter-in-love and she is blessed to have you and Butch to love and admire her. And Seth has wonderful parents, wife, and children…a true circle of love!
I think our mothers would have been friends! Our daughter-in-love is precious and we love her! Blessings we could never deserve, God’s amazing grace. Thank you my dear friend❤️
My dear friend, this is such a beautiful post and tribute to your dear mother. I always enjoy reading the memories that you share about her. Your peonies are breathtaking and your entire setting is so pretty. The hot pink flowers are so striking against all of the lovely blue and white. Sweet friend, I have so enjoyed my visit today. I wish you a most happy and blessed Mother’s Day!
Shannon, you are a sweetheart! I sure miss your blog posts. Take care of yourself, sweet friend ❤️ and Happy Mother’s Day to you and your mom!
Pam, your table is a beautiful and touching tribute to your mother – she sounds very special indeed. The table is lovely in blue and white and it was genius to use the blue and white caftan blouse as a table topper. I’m not sure that I remember seeing the bee tablecloth but it is darling. Both the tablecloth and the topper make the gorgeous peonies pop – they look absolutely stunning in the pasta urn and the Willow dishware continues the blue and white theme. It must be so precious to find the card that you gave her. Wishing you a very happy Mother’s day, my friend, and happy wishes to your daughter-in-love as well!
Thank you, Kim! Your comments are so sweet. Wishing you and your mom a Happy Mother’s Day my friend!
The peonies are beautiful. It will still be a few weeks before they bloom here. I love how you found the card that you once sent your mother. My father also lived many years longer than my mother. I had similar experiences of finding things of my mother’s that brought back warm memories when going through things at Dad’s.
Thank you Sheryl. Hopefully your peonies will bloom beautifully! Love discovering memories that had been forgotten!
Pam, I love this post! Your Mom was so special and reminds me of my precious Mom. She, too, has been in heaven for over 15 years now. If there’s a kitchen available in heaven, they will both be in it cooking their specialty dishes after “fixing their faces”. I heard that phrase all my young life. Your tablescape is beautiful! I love the linens! I’ll keep it in mind to shop my closet! 😂 I like the added print layer the kaftan provided. I really like the round tablecloth; it looks so nice on the rectangular table. I use my longer rectangular ones on my round table by gathering and tying the edges with a ribbon on either side of the table. Your peonies are gorgeous! I got a total of 3 this year so I was pleased. Ours aren’t very old, so I do hope they get a bit more ambitious on providing blooms in the future. The pasta urn is really pretty and makes a nice vessel for the flowers. I really enjoyed the blue and white theme. We’re in for a bit more rain tomorrow and Wednesday. Enjoy your week. Clara❤️
Thank you Clara. I imagine our mothers could have been friends. We need the rain, hopefully not severe weather! Happy Tuesday❤️
Truly breath-taking. Have a lovely Mother’s Day!
Thanks so much, Michele!
Pam, your table sure is set with love! Thanks for sharing the ‘storehouse’ of your favorite memories of treasured motherhood memories. Wishing you a grand Mother’s Day – it’s the season to celebrate Mom!
Thank you, Mary for your lovely comments!
Your peonies with your blue and white –all my favorites! I’ve already put in my peony order for my DILs who are mothers. Your mother’s day stories are so beautiful, too! It has put me in the mood for Mother’s Day!
Thank you Maryleigh. Happy Mother’s Day to you and your DILs!
Beautiful Pam in both your table setting & in remembering your Mum.
Blessings sweet friend, Jennifer 💕
Thank you, my friend ❤️
I was searching the Internet for ways to use peonies on the mother’s day table and loved your photo with the blue pasta jar. My mom passed away last March. Blue was her favorite color. She loved peonies also. My mom loved setting a beautiful table and never wanted to use paper plates. So glad my peonies are getting ready to bloom just in time for using them on the mother’s day table at church. I think I will add some of my mom’s blue dishes as well in her honor! Thanks for sharing about your mom.
Heidi, I am sorry to read your mom passed away. I am so glad you found my blog post. Yes, use your mom’s blue plates! Happy Mother’s Day to you!
