Hello friends and a big welcome to my favorite season. Today marks the official start of fall. The Autumnal Equinox takes place this evening at 7:05 p.m. CDT (Central Time).

In celebration of all things autumn, I rounded up 19 fall flower arrangements that represent the beauty of the season in our Appalachian Foothills! When I think of fall, I automatically think of pumpkins. Butch and I went shopping for pumpkins yesterday. Of course, I love stacking them and placing them on the Sunshine Cottage Porch and all around the garden and on the patio. This arrangement might look complicated, but it really is simple. I placed wet floral foam on top of the pumpkin and taped it in place. I used sunshine ligustrum and nandina around the sides and began filling in the space with sunflowers, dahlias, hydrangeas, celosia, and finished it with pheasant feathers!
Hammered copper is especially beautiful for autumn! Dahlias are from Deep Roots Flower Farm. An easy arrangement that is classic for any season!
A peacock bowl from my collection of ‘Artesian Road’ by Tracy Porter was placed on a vintage April Cornell tablecloth. Flower selections are zinnias, dahlias, and hydrangeas. Once again, I used wet floral foam to hold the blooms in this shallow bowl. TP bud vases add to the Sunshine Cottage vignette!
My Renaissance Man gathered Goldenrod that grows wild in our woodlands and on roadsides. At one time it was Alabama’s state flower. Alstroemeria from the grocery store and fronds from our maiden grass were added to the vintage copper pot. The rustic arrangement looked right at home on the split rail fence behind our picnic table!
A Mackenzie-Childs Flower Market vase was a surprise gift a few years ago from Shirley that once blogged at Hospitality Designs. Shirley’s beautiful home was featured on the cover of the July/August edition of Victoria Magazine and a gorgeous eight page spread on the inside. You can still find her on Instagram. Autumn Fire sedum, dahlias, and chaste tree blooms highlighted the colors on the vase.
This was my first attempt to make a blooming pumpkin. For my first try, I hollowed out the pumpkin and placed a glass container inside. It was more time consuming than using the floral foam method. Spider mums, alstroemeria, and sunshine ligustrum were my flowers of choice.
This was the first time using one of my glass handbags. Since I am a collector to a fault, I didn’t purchase one handbag but four because they varied in size and shape. All four were in a guest bedroom, and while dusting, it dawned on me to select one for a small bouquet. The small arrangement took no more than ten minutes, including cutting the Autumn Fire Sedum and zinnias. Tip: Think outside the box for containers to be used for flowers!
A centerpiece doesn’t have to be flowers! A dough bowl was filled with velvet pumpkins, spider mums, deer sheds, and pheasant feathers for an autumn vignette on our picnic table. A pair of candle stands accompany the dough bowl. Hay bales were placed behind the table and pumpkins joined the fall scene!
Peach-colored roses, spider mums, and a lilac colored dahlia from my garden were placed in this lovely pheasant bowl. Of course, pheasant feathers were placed inside!
A recent arrangement in an often used pitcher called for hydrangeas, zinnias, and dahlias. You have noticed by now that dahlias are my go-to flowers during the fall season!
My RM (Butch) surprised me with this gorgeous autumn pitcher. He often buys me gifts “just because” and furthermore he has excellent taste! Sunflowers, sedum, zinnias, and dahlias were the perfect combination for the pitcher!
Hydrangeas, zinnias, and coleus were cut from my garden with the flower farm supplying the gomphrena and dahlias. The vase normally occupies the corner space behind my Daddy’s typewriter in the Sunshine Cottage!
A colorful pumpkin arrangement using the wet floral foam method to hold all the flowers in place…Autumn Fire sedum, dahlias, and nandina!
An arrangement of gold flowers that included zinnias, sunflowers, celosia, and beggarticks were placed in a special crockery pitcher that belonged to my paternal grandmother. The handmade gold scarf was purchased on a girl’s trip to Argentina!
The hammered copper pitcher appears again but this time on a cozy throw used as a tablecloth. Celosia, sunflowers, zinnias, and dahlias are some of autumn’s most colorful flowers!
The small Italian canister placed on a wood slice is perfect for autumn flowers and apples! Once again my go-to fall flowers…zinnias, dahlias, hydrangeas, chaste tree blooms, and the addition of the perfect fall fruit…apples!
One more pumpkin flower arrangement!
I recently used a quartet of copper mugs for a floral centerpiece. Tea cups, bottles, or any smaller vessel is a great way to practice your skills at arranging flowers.
A variety of sunflowers from our garden made a lovely centerpiece for the picnic table. A few dahlias from our garden mixed in with a few from the flower farm to fill the blue striped pitcher!
