Tablescape Tuesday: Morning Glories

February 17, 2015~ Food & Entertaining, Tablescape Tuesday

“Yet he did not leave himself without witness, for he did good by giving you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons,
satisfying your hearts with food and gladness”
Acts‬ ‭14‬:‭17‬

Today, I am introducing you to what is now known as “The Tablescape Marathon”!  I am sharing the first of five different tablescapes (in four different rooms) that we had so much fun putting together while I was at Patti’s!  What I love about these tablescapes is that none of them even come close to resembling the next.  This one will bring a little color into your life!

This room was the former living room and is now used as an extension for the formal dining room!

The silk tablecloth is a fabulous purchase by Patti on a trip to India.  The colors are vibrant and the cloth is reversible to a lovely blue and white pattern!

The Wedgwood Patrician “Morning Glory” pattern has a multicolor floral center and blue trim with an embossed outer rim.  It was produced from 1936-1981!

I tried to buy this china from Patti because I absolutely love it!  She wouldn’t sell and Butch was thrilled over her decision!

The sterling silver flatware is “Buttercup” by Gorham!

The pale blue angel napkin rings made by Mother were the perfect addition!  You first saw them here: It’s A Girl Thing.

The blue of the china is the same as the wall color!

A pair of blue and white ginger jars were made in England and add interest to the setting!

The French-made linen napkins were found in Marigot, the capital of French Saint-Martin where Patti and Mike vacation every year!

A pair of Lenox ruffled edged vases hold lovely yellow roses!

The 3-tier centerpiece contains bowls that match the china and are filled with sweet and savory bites!

The crystal pattern with a platinum rim is “Desire” by Lenox!

A cool camera shot looking through the back of the chair into the dining room!

The tablecloth and china are the stars of this Tablescape Tuesday!

“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver”
Proverbs‬ ‭25‬:‭11‬

Grande Dame

February 16, 2015~ Travel

“For a man’s ways are before the eyes of the Lord,
and he ponders all his paths”

Proverbs‬ ‭5‬:‭21

Last Tuesday my sweetie called around lunch time and said, “do you want to go to Louisiana”? My immediate response was “sure, when are we going”?  He said “in about three hours”!!!  I don’t do spontaneous as well as I used to, but I threw together a suitcase, jumped in his truck…and off we went!  It was a business trip that entailed over 1000 miles of travel in a 33 hour time span!  Whew-that is exhausting just to think about, isn’t it?!  But, I wouldn’t trade anything for the time shared in his truck riding down the interstate and back roads of “Cajun country”!

There was a surprise reward for me on this trip-we took a couple of hours and toured one of the beautiful plantations in St. James Parish!  Oak Alley Plantation in Vacherie, Louisiana rests along the banks of the mighty Mississippi River about an hour west of New Orleans!  It was built in 1837-1839 and famous for its alley of 28 giant live oak trees, and is a National Historic Landmark.  Plantation houses were once scattered along the Mississippi valley, though this “grande dame” Oak Alley is probably the finest of those remaining!  As you tour with us today, this fabled plantation may look familiar, as it has appeared in many movies and television shows!  Hope you enjoy without having to endure the long ride!!

The Alley of Oaks is a quarter mile alley of 300 year old Virginia Live Oaks.  In the early 1700’s, an unknown settler planted an alley of 28 oaks in two equal rows spaced 80 feet apart leading to the river.  Live oaks have a life span of approximately 600 years, which makes these 300 year old trees middle aged!  I’d say they outlive humans by a few years!

Perhaps the most photographed plantation in Louisiana, this splendid Greek Revival style mansion was completed in 1839.

The view of the alley from the mansion to the Mississippi River!

Our very knowledgable and entertaining guide, Katie explains the tastefully appointed Roman parlor…a 19th century drawing room.  The warmth of Creole hospitality is reflected  in a collection of fine books, paintings, games, and music (a grand piano is out of camera view).

Chandelier in the drawing room

The Dining Room is gently cooled by the movement of the “shoo fly” or punkah fan suspended over the table.  It is original to the house and is still in working order as demonstrated by our guide!

Social events were very popular on the large plantations in the South prior to the Civil War!

The doors step out onto the veranda and would have been open during dining in the warm months!  Guests were able to enjoy the view of the river!

Bon Appetit!

Frequent dinner guests would have enjoyed sumptuous meals in the beautifully appointed dining room!

Four bedrooms occupy the second floor of the mansion.  This room served effectively as a guest room, an infirmary, and even a mourning room for the dead!  Notice the black around the mirror and the mourning clothes!

Black hats, a symbol of mourning, occupy the chest!

Precious memories of childhood joys are captured in the nursery!

Upstairs Hall with doors leading out to a stunning view of the oaks!

The blue Master Bedroom with an early 1800’s Louisiana bed.  Carved pineapples grace the bed posts!

A very ornate medallion and chandelier!

The Master Bedroom is appointed with antiques representative of the 1800’s-this is my favorite room in the mansion!

The Lavender Bedroom is preserved essentially as Mrs. Josephine Stewart left it.  She was the last resident owner and she restored, maintained, and ultimately bequeathed this splendid historic treasure so all could enjoy!

This spectacular view of the avenue of mighty oaks is from the second floor gallery facing north toward the Mississippi River!

Just look at how large these oaks are!

The Office, occupying a rear corner on the main floor, would have been used to run the everyday affairs of the household and a thriving sugar crop!

A recreation of the slave houses that existed on this sugar plantation.  The exhibit shares the story of daily life of those who were enslaved from approximately 1835 to the end of the Civil War!

The back alley of oaks were planted by the Romans (original owners) in the 1830’s and the Stewarts in the 1930’s!

A rear view of the plantation home

A view in the distance through the oaks to the Overseer’s House, one of the original buildings!

No trip is complete without excellent (and local) food!  This is called butter beans and shrimp and is unique to this area!  It was absolutely delicious and was served with rice and lightly battered catfish!

As y’all know I love desserts, and this local confection was not disappointing!  It is called Ba Ba and I was lucky enough to score the recipe!  I may share in the future!

Thanks for coming along with us!

Simple + Southern Sunday No. 17

February 15, 2015~ Simple + Southern Sunday

“For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods”
Psalm‬ ‭95‬:‭3‬

We have been reflecting on the greatness of God this past week!  Those are thoughts that we can never exhaust.  Do you ever just pause and think about how much the Creator of the universe loves you…that He has proven His love over and over again?

This church located in Clarksville, TN is on the National Register of Historic Places and was completed in 1877. I love the red doors!

“The splendor of a king, clothed in majesty
Let all the earth rejoice, all the earth rejoice…”

Our nephew, Joel made this map of the world for his office.  It is amazing what can be done with a pallet!  Total cost=$0

May I just say, I never turn down a dessert!  Chocolate Pave…sponge cake with chocolate caramel buttercream and blood orange sorbetto at Frank Stitt’s Bottega Restaurant!

Gorgeous sunset over the lake this week!

“…He wraps Himself in light, and darkness tries to hide
And trembles at His voice, trembles at His voice…”

Elsie’s love bird Valentine box that she made (with a little help from mom, Tara)…just darling-both Elsie and the box!

In honor of Valentine’s, strawberry and funfetti macarons!

Old Glory waving proudly at our historic Federal Building!

“…How great is our God – sing with me
How great is our God – and all will see
How great, how great is our God…”

So simple…red roses and candles on our dining room table!

A bronze replica of the Statue of Liberty (on the outskirts of Birmingham) standing 36 feet and weighing 10 tons that was cast in France!

Santa’s unfortunate demise!!

Most of the world would love to have access to clean water! So very thankful that we don’t depend on wells, but think about those who aren’t as fortunate.  May we appreciate the undeserved blessing of turning on our faucet!

“…name above all names, worthy of all praise
my heart will sing, how great is our God!”
-Chris Tomlin

“I was glad when they said to me,
‘Let us go to the house of the Lord!’”

Happy Monday! We have had a lot of rain which shor Happy Monday! We have had a lot of rain which shortened our peony season! Peony Karl Rosenfield was absolutely stunning this year. Sarah Bernhardt was relocated last year and gave us some gorgeous blooms in spite of being moved. Several Spirea are in bloom as well as Clematis Jackmanii! What is blooming in your garden?

Happy Wednesday! I set a table next to our woodlan Happy Wednesday! I set a table next to our woodlands in memory of my beautiful Mother who was a lovely example of a Proverbs 31 woman. Mother had the gift of hospitality and shared it with everyone. Karl Rosenfield peonies from my garden fill a treasured keepsake pitcher handed down from my grandmother! A beautiful floral April Cornell ‘Lillianna’ tablecloth and Famille Rose salad plates elevate the status of the old picnic table next to our woodlands. I have collected bejeweled enamel trinket boxes for many years and shared a few on the table for whimsy and fun. For memories of my Mother, click the link in my profile.

With glorious weather, the table next to our woodl With glorious weather, the table next to our woodlands was perfect for teatime! It is Tea on Tuesdays with blogging friends Mary and Kitty. The table is enhanced by views toward the mountain, woodlands, and the large Snowball Viburnum. The verdant rye grass appears as a green carpet that has been spread for Easter! Vintage Fitz and Floyd ‘Herb Garden’ teapots, sugar and creamer, and oval tray are suited for springtime with their embossed bows, vegetables, and words. A bouquet of Kwanzan Cherry blossoms add more spring color to the setting.

I am serving a simple teatime with Earl Grey tea, savory egg salad filled phyllo cups, and sweet vanilla cupcakes with cream cheese icing, and macarons! A favorite cottage rose tablecloth and Essential napkins are by April Cornell.

We are most blessed to celebrate the resurrection of Christ, being the source of new life, yet new life that is eternal. The beauty of this spring will again give way to another autumn in a few months, but the significance of His empty tomb will never change! Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our woodlands and this is the first one of the season, an Easter/Spring table! I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bodily resurrection enables all those who choose to follow Him to have assured victory over our greatest enemy…death!

I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

A fluffle of moss bunnies hopped up to the picnic table. A ‘Charming’ tablecloth with Mary Lake-Thompson napkins and Williams Sonoma enchanting ‘Famille Rose’ bunny plates!

I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition of Tea on Tuesdays. My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. As an April Cornell Brand Ambassador, I was gifted these gorgeous linens! I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.

I am serving my favorite, Earl Gray tea, from an Eileen’s Reserve teapot. Teacups by Grace Teaware and vintage Rose Chintz salad plates by Johnson Brothers add more floral patterns to the mix. Japanese Magnolia blooms were cut from my garden and placed in a lilypad teapot!

Happy first Monday of February! After so many cold Happy first Monday of February! After so many cold days, we are experiencing a tease of spring with a 73 degree day that is forecast. After the gray and cloudy days, I needed a dose of color and decided to set a colorful citrus themed brunch! Using a bird gold and pewter stand, I mixed a citrus medley of lemons, oranges, and limes with pink and white carnations as the centerpiece. The table is highlighted with blue and white dishware. Fresh squeezed orange juice, French-pressed coffee and sweet treats of lemon poppyseed muffins, lemon cake with lemon icing, and lemon pastries are perfect for a small brunch. A faux lemon topiary belonged to my beloved Mother and seemed a perfect addition to a citrus-themed table!
